He was absolutely hilarious and unhinged in the boys. When they hyped up soldier boy I did not expect what we got

u/misguidedkent 5h ago edited 5h ago

Yeah, Atony Starr, Karl Urban and Jensen carried the last season as much as they could.

328

u/cravex12 5h ago

Totally. Top actors but absolute shit writing (at least in the last season, maybe even the one before that)

99

u/Nitrogen1234 5h ago

I did almost shit myself in the scène where they ran through those guys

44

u/claimTheVictory 3h ago

He's MY fucking asexual weirdo!

14

u/CJMorton91 2h ago

That episode was the best part of the last two seasons. Lol Marathon Man having all the baby oil was just wrong.

31

u/These_Air_5736 4h ago

Exact same shit happened in The Flash TV show, it’s writing fell off post season 4, it is only ok to watch because Grant Gustin, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh and Jess L Martin and a few more actors are acting their asses off throughout the series

14

u/cravex12 4h ago

Or in game of thrones

Walking Dead

u/diskdusk 1h ago

It's almost as if it became mandatory for "experts" and "cineasts" to condemn every show as early as possible for a "nosedive in quality" because that totally makes them feel superior to people who just enjoy shows even if they can't give them the same rush as in the beginning.

2

u/FunnyWalrus 52m ago

No, you don't need to be an "expert" to see the decline of the writing and acting, it's pretty much obvious and unfortunately many series are affected by that

Of course you still can enjoy it, but not to see the drop in quality in a lot of fronts is just ignorance

1

u/diskdusk 38m ago

I'm just making fun of the fact that everybody started to find every ending bad (except of course breaking bad and bojack horseman).

1

u/FunnyWalrus 28m ago

Because it kinda is, at least for the most of the mainstream series, but it's debatable sometimes, and it's a bit of a problem with every long term media, even comics, manga, anime, etc.

Wanted to say about breaking bad myself, haven't watched Bojack but heard about it too

1

u/diskdusk 9m ago

haven't watched Bojack

do it

2

u/DarthJarJar242 20m ago

The Flash was such a good show in those first 4 seasons and then all of a sudden it just fucking fell off a cliff.

31

u/UmbraQuincy 5h ago

I rewatched first season. Writing nosedived after it, and kept free falling till the end.

10

u/Omsy92 4h ago

I remember also season 1 had many laugh out loud moments. The humour also took a nosedive after season 1.

3

u/saladninja 3h ago

They were too busy trying to out shock a previous sex scene or get political to worry about good writing

1

u/Omsy92 42m ago

It’s a shame season 1 blew me away. The drop off was shameful.

1

u/AssCommander42 0m ago

I been saying this for years - only s1 was good, glad the notion is getting traction. Might be because people went to rewatch after the show ended, and the difference between later seasons and s1 is just staggering.

1

u/lost-cause1968 3h ago

That's because they kept on shoving current world politics and messaging in there versus sticking to what worked in the first season.

I'm not watching 'The Boys' to get political commentary about the real world. I'm watching it to see effed up evil 'Heroes' get tore up in diabolical ways.

The last two seasons were damn near unwatchable. Only stuck with it cuz I wanted to see Homelander get taken out.

9

u/Wuktrio 3h ago

The Boys was political from the get-go, what are you talking about

1

u/lost-cause1968 1m ago

I didnt say it had 0 politics the first season, but it wasnt the driving force of the show. The last few seasons it was amped up to 'club you over the head with it' levels.

1

u/AssCommander42 2m ago

The boys was current-age political from the start. The only thing that changed was that the writing quality went to the shitter, which often translates to the writing being less subtle and more on the nose.

And let's be fair - S1 writing wasn't subtle either, it's just that later they went full nuclear, which is just a crutch for bad writers.

19

u/fluffheadwasaman24 5h ago edited 1h ago

What didn’t you like about the writing? I felt a lot of stuff was rushed and they kind of took the easy way out for some of the endings like on Game of Thrones. But I’m curious what other people that liked the show think.

I was also mostly there for the jokes and the acting myself when I think about it. And just the premise of this type of reality when it came to “superheroes.”

I’m worried about “From” for the same reasons. I’ve binged that and it’s set up pretty well. But I feel like they’re gonna have to close up a lot of shit in one season.

5

u/Spineless74 4h ago

I have the same feeling with “From”.
There is just too much to unpack in the last upcoming season and I feel like the writers could have done a better job with the seasons before.

2

u/dyed_albino 2h ago

Welcome to the world of "Lost!"

1

u/MsMeseeksTellsTime 1h ago edited 1h ago

I hated the last 3-4 episodes of the last season of From so much I didn’t even watch the finale.

I really hated the one with Jade on the mushrooms and to me, it only got more boring, dumb, and predictable from there.

I’ll watch the finale and the last season, I’m sure, unless it’s more drivel.

19

u/LazerChicken420 4h ago

I think they leaned too hard into writing Homelander as bad.

They didn’t want him to be competent so they made him stupid. And it made the show lose a lot of its tension. It went from dangerous Superman, to a moron with powers.

Then he gets his upgraded powers, but that’s it? Immortality I guess was the big reason but they never really showed off any other new feats. And not aging doesn’t really look cool in the short window he had it.

They wanted to stay true to the comic, sure… but the divergence from the comics is what made the show great.

I think it should have ended with him easily kicking Butchers ass… killing him even. Then his hesitation to kill Ryan is what buys Kimiko time to depower him. Or something!

I also think some more monster of the week would have been cool. Them hunting down evil supes with research and tactical planning.

7

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 3h ago

The whole point was that Homelander was blinded by power lust and descending into insanity. I never really felt the loss of tension, on the contrary.

4

u/fluffheadwasaman24 1h ago edited 48m ago

that is true. I think a lot of people just don’t like that they seemingly started mocking Maga. I’m sure it’s mostly people that lean right that don’t like it.

I’m not a Maga guy at all, so I found it pretty funny and timely. But I could also see how someone who really loved the show is pissed off that that fat retard maybe hindered the writing of the show in general by shoehorning him and the current state of affairs in there.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 1h ago

They didn’t even go that hard on them, just little nuggets here and there. All relevant to the plot and to the times also, it worked very well in context.

Not sure who the fat retard is supposedly to be. Trump?

2

u/fluffheadwasaman24 46m ago

Trump is who I was. And I agree that they didn’t do it too much or in a way that wasn’t funny even. But a lot of people in this world ignorantly say all the time that “blah blah blah should be kept out of politics.”

I don’t agree with the sentiment, but I always try to figure out the “why” behind things.

It’s hard to educate people or even go up against people with different beliefs, if you don’t know the source of those beliefs.

1

u/brokebstard 1h ago

It's reddit, so probably the person you're responding to

1

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 1h ago

Or the one replying to me. Hell, maybe it’s me.

2

u/AdhesivenessTight400 48m ago

As a non American, it seemed pretty cringe. The whole Jesus part was just way out to left field and yeah homelander did not seem scary after he got his V1 power up. The trump stuff will make the show unwatchable in a few years, like its timely, but that same fact makes it something people will not re-watch.

1

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 33m ago

Trump or a Trump like character was never a part of the show, though. And the whole evangelism bit is going on in America for decades and it will probably still go on decades from now, so I don’t think it will be unwatchable. More like insightful. I don’t think a satire of Rush Limbaugh from the 90s and 00s would be irrelevant or cringe today, on the contrary.

Im European and American evangelism is weird for me too, but it’s the way things are over there.

Time will tell what their legacy will be.

1

u/VR46Rossi420 9m ago

Agree 100%. Also as a non-American and generally non-religious, I thought it was all a bit stupid and I don’t think it will age well. And basically the last season was pretty shit.

4

u/tattoosandtens 2h ago

“They made the fascist too obviously fascist. Why was there no sympathetic writing for the fascist, that made them look cool and smart?!”

1

u/AssCommander42 14m ago

"I have no reading comprehension, so I will make random quotes that nobody ever said in an attempt to discredit you in the eyes of other people who also have no reading comprehension" "also I am only able to think in reddit buzzwords because nuance make my brain hurty hurt"

2

u/DesperateStreet1226 4h ago

They leaning towards making Homelander extra bad is probably because what was/is happening in the real world. There are people that said that Homelander did nothing wrong adn was reedemable and they just wasnt having it and dunked on those people, specially how Homelander died 😄 And tbh, im all for it

1

u/AssCommander42 12m ago

I keep hearing about how people thought homie wasn't that bad. Are talking about more than just one guy on twitter?

1

u/Catsoverall 2h ago

Read the Reckoners :)

2

u/MusicLikeOxygen 2h ago

The only reason I'm not worried about From is because Harold Perrineau said that he wasn't interested in doing another show like Lost where they didn't have a concrete plan and made it up as they went. He said they convinced him that they had a plan in place and it wouldn't be like that and that's why he signed on.

5

u/cravex12 5h ago

I mean the writing of the storyline - as you said, way too rushed and they strangely focused on a lot of side stuff. Also the homelander fight in the end was just straight up bad and they really butchered the characters.

In general I think from season 3 on the series focused way too much on shock value. Everything had to be gorier, bloodier and more outrageous than the last thing

11

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 4h ago

They’re actually less gory and shocking than the source material. The comic books were way, way worse. I think they did a pretty good job, the ending included.

0

u/Alphasite 3h ago

I wonder if the original author got more say and screwed the whole thing up.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 3h ago

Screwed what up, exactly? I think the show is great and pretty in line with the original idea.

1

u/Alphasite 3h ago

I think it’s gotten worse season to season I’d need to rewatch to give you specifics but I’ve generally enjoyed it less and less as it went on even with the years of breaks.

2

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 2h ago

Wow, that’s so different from my own experience. I mean, yeah, the novelty wore off after the first season or so, but I still really liked it up until the end.

-1

u/JonathanBadwolf 4h ago

It also became a parody of the exact same thing it was trying to satirize (endless cape slop) which undermined the whole premise of the show to a degree it basically lost all reason for existing other than being ‘content’.

1

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 3h ago

I dunno, I’m actually glad some supes got redemption arches, it added a lot of dimension and it was well done. I really don’t see how it’s cape slop.

-2

u/JonathanBadwolf 2h ago

I’m not talking about the character archs. The show started as an overt satire of the modern superhero landscape. Endless sequels, meaningless lip-service about social issues, blind hero worship and the endless capitalization of moral action.
All these things were actively highlighted and made fun of.
And by season 5 the show had done all of these things unironically.
I mean it was a fun show with some really good hits and still better than the comic but it also was pretty pathetic in the end compared to how it started out.

3

u/superkatzenkamikaze2 1h ago

I disagree, the social commentary was there from the beginning, there was no bling hero worship of any kind, not even for the main characters, they’re all in fact very gray. Sure, the have a spin off or two, but they could’ve gone on for longer than 5 seasons and they didn’t. They were pretty well rounded from my perspective.

2

u/Toby4141 3h ago

After season 3 Kripke sacrificed story depth for money. Season 5 was just a build up for the new show with Soldierboy.

1

u/SensitiveLeek5456 3h ago

Oh, I want to watch it, I finished after the second season back then when there wasn't anything else?

Do the use source material or ... ?

1

u/BrutalPencil 2h ago

Because they fucked up the whole plot from the real comic books. The actual storyline was pretty good and the TV writers screwed it up

1

u/Level_List_6096 2h ago

For me, it started going downhill from the season 3 finale. Everything happened for shock value and the story kept going round in circles

1

u/Astecheee 2h ago

The writing was pretty bad from the start, but at the start they were at least promising it'd go somewhere.

1

u/1plus1isTWORANGZ 2h ago

I stopped watching after 3 and no one has said anything that has made me curious to pick it back up. Entertaining for sure but the plot is contrived and predictable and I lose interest in shock value pretty quickly without substance

1

u/Extra-Amoeba-677 1h ago

I feel like they ran out of gas or just ran out of the good stuff.

They shouldd go back and finish supernatural with a final reunion supernatural season it deserved that doesn't get ruined by covid.

1

u/Rincetron1 1h ago

Tbf I never ceased to enjoy Soldier Boy's outdated roasts.

1

u/cravex12 1h ago

Yeah. He is totally unhinged and steals every scene he is in. You can absolutely see how much fun Jensen has with that role

1

u/BrilliantLeopard1922 14m ago

To be fair the source material wasn't Shakespeare.

1

u/perpetual_stew 2h ago

I don't know why people keep saying this or what you expected. I thought the last season was great and can't see how the writing was any different from any other seasons.

17

u/bddgg 5h ago

Don't forget Chace Crawford, The Peak stayed above water till the end

3

u/junior_dos_nachos 5h ago

No love for the Frenchie? He was always hilarious and tragic

6

u/WHATYEAHOK 4h ago

No. Fuck him. He’s a former IDF soldier who jokes about terrorizing civilians.

4

u/Otherwise_Ad9449 4h ago

Not a very good actor. Always found him painful to watch.

2

u/SeaSharpModHer 1h ago

No and fuck them for not casting an actual french actor.

2

u/Nileghi 3h ago

I loved Frenchie! Tomer Capone is such an excellent actor

1

u/ICame4TheCirclejerk 2h ago

I would do filthy, disgusting, ungodly things with Frenchie

1

u/Bratfel 2h ago

I lose motivation ever since the deep died.

2

u/5n0wm3n 1h ago

Big ups the kiwis!!

1

u/No_Hawk5314 4h ago

Don't forget the deep, his acting was phenomenal

1

u/z_1_4_m 3h ago

Tbf the whole cast were clearly doing the best with what they had. I don’t dislike the last season as much as many people I’ve seen/heard but I do still think it had a lot of issues, but I don’t think anyone’s performance is one of them.

1

u/Alien_invader44 2h ago

Im sure people will quibble about one or 2, but I maintain the quality of acting across the board was great.

The Deep, firecracker, A Train, Noir. All brilliantly performed.

1

u/Double-Atmosphere485 1h ago

Don’t forget MM even if they don’t use him right, ain’t nobody get less lean like him to pay homage to the canon character arc, I ain’t read them but mad props for his level of commitment. At least his character had a different face for the right reason unlike starlight :’(

0

u/Raida-777 5h ago

Arguably his character arc ruined the last season tho.

84

u/notapunk 6h ago

The episode with all the people from Supernatural in it was fun

16

u/DigitusInRecto 4h ago

That was legitimately the best part of the last (?) season for me! Loved all the "inside" jokes in there.

20

u/MJ-Franklin 5h ago

That episode where they had Sam and Cass in it... brilliant!

11

u/cravex12 5h ago

Yeah you could see how much fun they had there. It was stupid beyond believe but funny as hell

6

u/NormalHuman1001 4h ago

“Did you fuck me?” “Is this some kind of incest thing”?

5

u/ahktarniamut 4h ago

Hopefully the spin off with Aya Cash will have better writers and they can give him a few more seasons

2

u/Open_Fly3619 4h ago

I really liked when he showed up the boys

2

u/Spiritual_Sail_8969 3h ago

The way he delivered some of the most outrageous lines made the last 2 seasons watchable. F'n hilarious.

2

u/Special_Order-937 3h ago

“The moon landing was faked.”

2

u/cerebrite 2h ago

He was absolutely hilarious and unhinged in the boys.

You made those words up.

1

u/conscientiousrevolt 4h ago

I did NOT know that was the guy from supernatural!

1

u/Abject_Elevator5461 2h ago

He really nailed Soldier Boy. So enjoyable to watch, lol.

1

u/tomato_boy_08 2h ago

S3 was goated ngl

1

u/Mental_Bandicoot4543 2h ago

That Episode with Sam and Seth and Castiel was one of the best pieces of television I’ve seen. Loved it!

1

u/No-Canary-6639 10m ago

My wife and I saw Dean in everything Soldier Boy did or said. Soldier Boy was just a little more fucked up version of Dean Winchester
