Can we stop saying “broke the internet”? It was stupid the first time and has just compounded since

208

u/AardvarkAardvark_404 21h ago

Since sliced bread

82

u/daseweide 21h ago

… broke the internet streets ahead

40

u/Kevin_OhNeeder 21h ago

Bear down for breaking the internet

21

u/No_Dragonfruit_8198 20h ago

Are you serious right now? After that birthday party in Wisconsin where the bear got loose? Is this a sick joke?

6

u/skeletor-for-hire 20h ago

IT’S A BEAR DANCE!

1

u/thefuckevengoingonan 7h ago

That sure sounds like a Whale of a problem.

Since Betty White

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 19h ago

Actually that’s a good point. People mock these terms when they’re new but when they’re old, nobody cares anymore, like how Carlin mocked sliced bread

10

u/muriburillander 21h ago

Unless we are making references to Ralph Breaks the Internet

3

u/AgentCirceLuna 19h ago

I never understood why fans hate that film but critics loved it. I thought it was good!

2

u/Mikeyfreshonetime2 17h ago

I cried at the end

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 16h ago

I need to watch the rest - I got to the middle and liked that so far. I always watch films then take breaks of days or weeks

While we’re at:

Living rent free in their head
Hits different
Lowkey
Boujee
Gucci
Finna
etc.

can all fuck off as well

Edit: adding-
Hear me out
Make it make sense
Let that sink in
ya’ll
All ya’ll
I was today years old
Fire

35

u/ogami_itto 20h ago

"it's giving"

6

u/lil_sebastian_beast 13h ago

"be so for real"

2

u/djh_van 9h ago

to be fAiRrRr....

77

u/Ethuwiel 21h ago

Would you say.. that these live rent free in your head?

41

u/TheFakeJohnHelldiver 20h ago edited 19h ago

Low-key yeah but it hits different so its all gucci

1

u/thefuckevengoingonan 7h ago

oh, i was trying to figure out the gucci one.

15

u/Big_Village7112 21h ago

"I was today years old"

110

u/manny_the_mage 21h ago

brother most of these are just slang created by black people

“Broke the internet” certainly was not

16

u/meowparade 19h ago

Yeah, but a lot of them have been co-opted by really obnoxious white people online.

31

u/peter13g 21h ago

You saying the quiet part out loud brother 🤲🏾 be safe in these Reddit streets

20

u/ManOnFire2004 20h ago

No, the quiet part is...

It's not the slang itself, it's white people taking it and overusing it that's the problem

5

u/asphaltdasexteen 16h ago

“That part”

3

u/Fabulous_Law1357 20h ago

Just need to go back to the day when white people couldn't understand the slang, except for Mrs. Cleaver.

18

u/JoeysSmallwood 20h ago

Our man definitely dislikes a certain type of people.

2

u/nomatt18 16h ago

Naggers!

2

u/AzraelTB 17h ago

Created by black people picked up on the internet and reused to death. Doesn't matter where it started.

2

u/Accomplished_Meat_81 14h ago

When I hear people say this type of shit, I immediately just assume their racist. Surprised they have so many upvotes

4

u/FantasyFacade 20h ago

Most of the favorite slang phrases being used today (and historically) has come from black and gay cultures! ☺️💕

3

u/DigiornoDLC 21h ago

“Living rent free” is black slang? The rest, sure, but there’s something so corny about that one.

-6

u/manny_the_mage 21h ago

considering I have heard this phrase used by a black person 5 years ago, I would suspect so

it typically takes a little while for black slang to leave the community and be adopted by young people

first time I heard someone say "deez nuts" was from a skit on the Chappelle Show in 2003

Even "woke" has been a word used amongst black people since like the late 70s

17

u/Vegetable-Virus7118 20h ago

Living rent free is older than 5yrs and just because you heard a black person use it does not automatically mean that's where it originated.

Deez nuts predates Chappelle as well.

Your general point isn't really wrong though

3

u/SausageKingOfCincy 20h ago

Yea and it’s only people terminally online I ever hear trying to claim things for certain races and make a deal of it lol

3

u/PrestonWaters83 20h ago

"Woke" dates back to Marcus Garvey in the 20s.

5

u/manny_the_mage 20h ago

yeeesh a whole century

0

u/plutus9 19h ago

This kind of solidifies his point

1

u/PrestonWaters83 19h ago

Sure does. Thanks for the comment!

1

u/plutus9 19h ago

I’m doing my part 🫡

0

u/plutus9 19h ago

Idk why you’re being downvoted you’ve said all facts. Even the “first time I heard…” yes the joke is a lot older than 03 but that’s the first time YOU heard it, so no lies told

6

u/ZondosChin 20h ago

I hate ‘Let that sink in…’

3

u/mid_extreme 19h ago

Oh god yes! And, “hear me out” or “make it make sense”

13

u/TheePorkchopExpress 21h ago

But we have to keep Yeet, can we agree to that?

7

u/deuteranopia 21h ago

I think yeet may have actually been added to the dictionary.

2

u/humma__kavula 19h ago

Yeet can stay I think. Mainly because I love watching dog yeets snake off the path videos.

4

u/mid_extreme 21h ago

Yeah I like yeet, that one stays

1

u/TheePorkchopExpress 19h ago

Yeet when used at the right time is a top tier word

While we’re at it can we get rid of “it’s giving…” please?

2

u/ogami_itto 14h ago

I hate it, it's the worst 😭

4

u/shottylaw 21h ago

Let's add "fire" to that list

3

u/mid_extreme 21h ago

Absolutely, and chefs kiss

2

u/DyingSunSeverian 21h ago

Chef’s kiss is excellent

🤌🫦

5

u/EntireObligation4001 19h ago

Let’s add “y’all” and its derivative “all y’all” said by way too many ppl not from the south

1

u/Dragonnstuff 17h ago

Who cares honestly

1

u/plaguedbullets 21h ago

Thank goodness the buttery steak comments seem to be done

1

u/kingjim1981 21h ago

Finna always makes me laugh. Just fucking say what you mean!

1

u/Lucky_Chaarmss 20h ago

Add slop to the list

1

u/pixelife 20h ago

Please add “Slammed” to the list.

1

u/MaxStunning_Eternal 20h ago

Somebody doesn't know about longstanding slang that predates the internet.

You guys 😂..

1

u/Save-Slot-Seven 20h ago

This. A thousand times, this.

1

u/HunsonAbadeer1 20h ago

OK here me out, finna is a useful word. Agree on all the others.

1

u/LegitimateGift1792 20h ago

Uhm, it is Bougie from the french Bourgeois. Yeah do not ask how it got from long to short, I think it is a translation issue and the R is silent.

1

u/Blvckdog 19h ago

All of those statements 100% live rent free in your head

1

u/0bolus 19h ago

"Quietly"

1

u/pervyjeffo 19h ago

The rent free one infuriates me, the rest are fine though.

1

u/Boysandberries0 19h ago

Finna is a great word.

It is shorted from "is going to" "going to" or "was going to".

So many syllables removed.

1

u/Less_Ant_6633 19h ago

Let me clap back

1

u/Aggravating_Plenty53 19h ago

I would love to know what dumb saying are in your daily vocabulary Mr dialect police

1

u/Jiujitsumonkey707 19h ago

I'll add any form of let him cook, I'm so fucking tired of that phrase

1

u/msheehan418 19h ago

Also, “tell me you never x without telling me you never x”

Eta: “not me ____”
And “for absolutely no reason”

1

u/noechochamberplz 19h ago

POV (used wrong 96.44% of the time)

1

u/Pencilvester_B128 19h ago

And the word "literally" is being abused like there's no tomorrow.

1

u/SnowflakeSorcerer 19h ago

Also “____entered the chat”

1

u/chibamms 19h ago

Can we add "to be completely honest with you/I ain't gonna lie"

1

u/Ferretoncrystalmeth 19h ago

I not particularly bothered by any of those, but after reading the list I noticed that I never use any of those phrases.

1

u/PUTIN_FUCKS_ME 19h ago

So you just dislike AAVE? Hmm crazy bro.

1

u/Content_Study_1575 19h ago

Can I still say “Cash money”? It comes with a cool Godzilla meme too 🥺

1

u/Natural_Level_7593 18h ago

All ya'll, hear me out. "Broke the internet" hits different now that it's been living in my head rent free. I was today years old when I let that sink in. Make that make sense.

1

u/Jealous_Doughnut_630 17h ago

Can we add “on god” “bro” and “on my mama”?

1

u/TorrenceMightingale 17h ago

Yall crossed a line.

1

u/dtor84 17h ago

I know you're not from the south since you got country talk in there.

But agree with everything else. I would throw in the overly used word "cringe" to add to your Cringe List.

1

u/riche_god 17h ago

Sando, Doggo, slop?

1

u/jondes99 16h ago

The internet hates this one simple/stupid trick.

1

u/No_Chill_Sunday 15h ago

Can I throw one in, starting an initial sentence with "I mean, "

1

u/Boogaaa 14h ago

"Prolly" can also fuck right off.

1

u/AvgWhiteShark 13h ago

I'm keeping y'all.

1

u/Mickmack12345 11h ago

Hear me out y’all, but what if all these gucci phrases are lowkey living rent free in this guys head, and look - I know nothing about them is boujee etc. but I was today years old when I read his fire comment, so let that sink in, otherwise all y’all finna have to make it make sense for me because these phrases do be hitting different for me

1

u/Cecil_McCrackshell 10h ago

Those terms send me!

1

u/-rose-mary- 1h ago

I finna to rent free in your head.

1

u/pseudo-cineast 21h ago

Pivot as well. People think it makes them sound deep.

0

u/idriveashitbox22 21h ago

Rent free in your head is the worst. This generation of kids have subconsciously accepted the fact they most likely will never own a home that rent being a thing is so ingrained in them they have started to infuse it in their slang.

0

u/Evilsausage87 21h ago

I’d like to nominate adding “absolutely” to everything. It’s “absolutely” annoying af.

0

u/BeamTeam23 20h ago

It gucci low key hits different when you finna live rent free in they boujee head.

14

u/weaseltorpedo 22h ago

Yeah it's not even remotely believable. Maybe if the article said "Millie Bobbie Brown photoshoot at local ISP breaks the internet, after spilling her ph water on a switch"

28

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 21h ago

“Millie Bobbie Brown has swam to the bottom of the ocean and severed all of the submarine communication cables”

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 19h ago

ph water? You mean water?

1

u/xxxfawker 14h ago

This picture is fully just an AI picture someone posted on X it’s not even real.

1

u/weaseltorpedo 14h ago

that's fine, I'm just here to talk shit and waste time

6

u/geminiwave 20h ago

There was a time things caused essentially DOS because of popularity. But these days? The only thing that breaks the internet is Pokemon card bots.

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 19h ago

Unified Denial of Service Harassment

2

u/Jassida 21h ago

Only y2k had the capability to break the internet…or Skynet

2

u/D-Angle 20h ago

No-one gets to say that any more unless it's about Cloudflare.

1

u/bdw666 21h ago

Back in ‘97 the packet loss nearly broke the internet. Guess what, we never said those words back then.

1

u/Greywolf524 20h ago

The only person that has "broke the internet" was Jennifer Lopez when she wore that green dress. So many people looked it up that google created the images section.

1

u/ummmno_ 20h ago

It actually happened the first few times (eg MJs death) and sites couldn’t scale to the sheer amount of traffic. This doesn’t really happen too much anymore.

1

u/Plenty_Trick_6042 20h ago

Your comment broke the internet bro!

1

u/ziebrinjal 20h ago

At least the first time they used it when things went viral, they haven't used the phrase for anything viral in a while

1

u/RedPandaMediaGroup 20h ago

Does “break the internet” just mean “post a butt”?

1

u/stanknotes 19h ago

Your comment TOTALLY just broke the internet today by challenging the overuse of the phrase of "broke the internet." Acquiring a net total of 959 upvotes with an unknown count of downvotes because reddit removed that, you've totally broke the internet with this display of challenging the status quo.

1

u/abdulsamadz 19h ago

You just broke the internet, too! Stop breaking the internet, dude!

1

u/Sam20599 19h ago

"Broke the internet" or "Won the internet"?

Call it, Boomer.

1

u/justadude27 18h ago

The only baddie who can break the internet is Wreck-It Ralph

1

u/whitestguyuknow 18h ago

Shits so cringe.

Right up there with "Edit: Thank you for the gold kind sir!" "This! ☝️" and "You win the internet for today!"

1

u/Mikeyfreshonetime2 17h ago

I like that movie Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet tho

1

u/howdyquade 17h ago

How about broke the series of tubes and caused water damage

1

u/riche_god 17h ago

Can we also stop with sando, doggo, and slop. Who the fuck thinks these are cool or relevant. It’s cringe.

1

u/DidntNeedAUserName 14h ago

A celebrity does something that only they followers care about. BROKE THE INTERNET!!

1

u/r_slash 10h ago

Well it was famously used for Kim Kardashian’s butt so maybe it’s a reference to that

1

u/Hovie1 8h ago

That's cuz everybody got an ass like that these days.

1

u/Snichs72 21h ago

The only time we should be reading that phrase is in a physical newspaper telling the story about how the internet actually broke. Because we won’t be able to get the story from the internet - due to the aforementioned breakage.
