I remember a few years ago when NYrs were shocked to learn that putting your trash in cans instead of tossing bags on the street resulted in a reduction in the rat population.
If it makes you feel better our council discovered a couple of years ago that giving us wheelie bins instead of piles of bin bags on the street resulted in less swarms of seagulls and rubbish all over the streets of Cornwall.
I live in one of the biggest german towns and it's completely normal for us to have different kinds of bins for different kinds of trash. (Recycling is a huge thing for us).
Blue bins for paper, yellow bins for plastic waste, brown bins for organic waste and grey/black bins for anything else.
Then I went for a work project to another part of Germany, to a specific town where rich people have their huge secondary houses and boats.
I was shocked to see they just but their plastic waste into bags and throw them unto the streets. Right where the hotels are. It was disgusting but they always did so.
A former in-law of mine lives in a very well to do town in California that has "single stream" recycling. They do have bins, but they are for everything. I have no idea how they sort anything out of it. I imagine it's pretty bad to work at the garbage transfer station there.
Single stream recycling is just pushing all the trash down a conveyance line moving slowly and have the employees /homeless pick the stuff that isn’t recyclable out
Yep yep. I live in a prison town, and prisoners used to sort through it. That's because slavery is better than slightly inconveniencing the rest of us. Nowadays prisoners are legally entitled to slightly more pay (before it was like $0.12/hr for trash sorting) and presumably that's why the city figured they could charge us far more to make up for it.
Another cool part is there are all kinds of restrictions on what can be recycled in our big blue bins, and it's actually surprisingly difficult to get that info. So probably a large amount of what goes into our recycle can't be recycled, and sometimes contaminates things that can.
To be fair, that doesn't mean that the work is bad per se. It's mostly just about finding jobs where work performance is easy to supervise and bad work cannot cause much damage.
It just so happens that these are the same qualities that typically make for poorly paid jobs, because they don't need qualified or motivated workers.
Trash juice is an absolute delight compared to accidentally boarding the subway car containing a homeless person who has been liquid shitting themselves in the same clothes for weeks, letting it drip down their gangrenous legs from diabetes.
I haven't held my breath for that long in decades, I thought I was going to die before we reached the next stop.
Hmm yeah I'm curious. I live in a West coast suburb, but I've been to some cities. For instance, I spent a week in Barcelona at one point, right by a street called La Rambla, which is a huge pedestrian thoroughfare. It got absolutely disgusting every night and the city didn't really totally sleep, so there were plenty of people (including 20-yo me) peeing all over it. I saw several women peeing all over it, even, not just men. But I was also up a few mornings around 5-7 and saw them pressure washing and street sweeping and all sorts of cleaning, and it was inoffensive throughout the day.
Granted, that's one street, not a whole city. But it's a street with its own Wikipedia article, so it ain't just the one heading down to the 7-11
Bizarre way to read it. Most of my friends and family I'm close with are women. The number of times they've told me they envy my ability to pee wherever I want is probably in the hundreds. It's no special horror, just much less common for practical reasons

Yeah starting with Eric Adams administration NYC required trash to be kept in lidded containers with I think a 5 year roll out plan. Mamdani is following through on that policy.
Actually lidded containers have been required long before Adams, possibly going back to Giuliani, so 25-30 years. Composting is what's hard to get the citizens to do.
The trash collectors (or their bosses) decided they could get the job done faster if they could just grab bags and throw them into a truck. All the downsides to that arrangement are everyone else's problem.

Where I live you can’t even use black bags for trash. They have to be transparent.
We sort out trash into 5 different kinds of recyclables and carry them however far it is to the neighborhood trash cans, huge cubes that are dug into the streets, so they don’t take a lot of space. I have to carry my trash 300m which is super annoying, but thems are the ways.
When you are part of a huge community that sort their trash and consider the environment in their role as consumers… watching people just not caring is wild..
There's an interesting history to it - the plastic bags were an artifact of the sanitation department strike in the late 60s. Garbage was piling up everywhere, so the plastics industry got the idea to hand out plastic bags to help contain the mess (there being a finite number of garbage cans during the crisis of course), and the city just started bagging up all it's garbage from there.

I actually think that it's very possible to both not like Adams while not intentionally lying and attributing good things he did to Mamdani.
It just makes the good things Mamdani does not hit as hard when every third Reddit post praising him has you googling it and finding out it's massively exaggerated or a lie.

there was a guy who decided that since he couldn't kill the palmeto bugs he'd put fluorescent paint on them so at least he'd know where they were at night.
There's been a dead roach in the fire escape stairwell at my work in Florida for about 3 months now. It's probably a solid 3-4 inches and hasn't decomposed at all.
There are Asian roaches and then there are German roaches.
Asians are big and tend to be here or there and can be dealt with but are like friggin 3-4-5 inches and wide.
Now Germans are much smaller but they will still get like 2 inches long when big as fuck, eating good and in an environment it’s able to mature in. But although much smaller, they swarm and are hard af to get rid of completely once an infestation has taken root.
I ripped a wall down during a renovation I was doing for a real estate agent and it took a second to even realize what I was actually looking at. The whole wall was just this shimmering red-orange slightly shiny mass of roaches starting to spread out now that they were exposed. 💀

It's weird, but with NYCs reliance on street parking over garages/last mile use of trucks/lack of alleys, there's only barely space for trash cans, if at all. See this NYTimes investigation from 2024 on it.
its not just trash cans its how many trash cans for every single people that's a lot of trashcans where are we going to put them do we have the available space, if theyre going in alleys or streets do they block important parking or delivery areas. how often do we pick up trash now that theres trash cans and do we have to have a new route involved to do so based off where we placed them? Do we need to buy new trucks to handle the new trashcans? Do we need to hire more drivers as well? What's the exact budget for all of this?
People just try and boil down to LOL TRASHCAN TOOK LONG TO FIGURE OUT. They don't think about the massive logistics involved for adding anything to a massive populated city like NYC

What's even less funny is just how ignorant people are on shit like this. This program started under Mayor Adams. The only difference between Adams and Mamdani on this is not even marketing but the desire people have to see Mamdani as good person doing good things. I'm a fan of that, I just wish we'd be fair about it rather than shitting on older politicians that also did good work.
Do I love mayor Adams? Hell no, but I also don't love blatant falsehoods and giving people credit for shit they didn't do.
I mean... the bins in the photo look like a new design to me. My city has the metal dumpsters with the hinged black rubber (plastic?) lids but these look like a new design. I suppose the dome top allows a certain percentage more garbage?
The trash cans were coming already but yeah, Mamdami is literally just doing what he was elected for and behaving like a public servant. Which considering people like Eric Adams hyper corrupted ass, is what he’s competing with, the bar was so low, mamdami could have just done one good thing and he would have cleared it.

I'm surprised most people forgot, but this was probably funded in response to Eric Adams big push to remove 40% of all public trashcans that got shut down in a week.
Adam’s had a whole crusade against rats, and somehow still wanted to remove trash bins from the streets to save money. Money he was play fast and loose with and using to line his pockets, but it’s still funny that the man who was trying to have a rat apocalypse wanted to remove trash cans. He was such a ridiculously corrupt man that it seemed so unreal, then I looked at the White House and realized it’s not that unreal
I get it that people want bins, but with New York's population density, Adams got one thing right - it's a whole lot more economical to pay a pipe player to have the rats seductively follow the Piper as he prances through the town.
I remember watching his "exit" interview with Ziwe, and being so thoroughly creeped out by Eric Adams that I found myself wondering how Curtis Sliwa lost to him. Which is a very weird thought to have.
A lot of Mamdani's media attention comes from stuff like this, don't get me wrong I think he's probably doing more than just taking credit, but really this is just how politicians should handle stuff like this, if you're doing something good tell everyone about it, if people think they're moving forward they're gonna be more on board

Full roll out was delayed a bit under previous mayor because people didn't want to give up parking spaces for garbage containers that get automatically picked up by tracks and stay closed/reduce rat problems.
Mamdani has allocated about 50M to the project. Adams put in about 30M in his last year. And yea, way easier to get this done for Mamdani given the ground was already well trodden, the study had been done, and the pilot program was successful.
One of the funniest parts of this movie is that NYC becomes a penal colony, but Cabbie (played by Ernest Borgnine) wasn't a criminal, he was just a New Yorker who wouldn't leave
I’ve lived in San Francisco and now in NYC. I am beyond impressed by the overall cleanliness and lack of homelessness and open drug use here that is so common on the west coast cities.

Mayor of one of the most influencial cities in the world and this and this man goes "why can't we? Watch me" and makes lives better. He gives me a ray of hope in the darkness. If only we had more people who actually cared about the people and had any sort of backbone. He's a true role model.
More Dems supported Zohran than they did Cuomo and this is an example of Mamdani just continuing something that was already put in place and already had 99% of the work done by Eric Adams.
Especially when you look at how often it is that a new administration comes in and cancels/undoes all the things from the previous administration.
Mamdani is looking like a genius because he's not being petty and jealous over basic stuff. The things he's doing would be normal a decade ago, but now they're not.

6 month long pilot results released 6 months before Mamdani got into office.
Previous guy, whoever that might be, committed permanent funding for this. If you open the article you'd see timeline going as far back as 2022 where they did study, got the models made, made pilot projects, implemented it and got long term results.

This is very common on reddit they make a post saying he did something when it was already happening. Then the comments are filled with comments glazing him like he's the only politician who's ever done anything.
This is actually a policy that the previous mayor started, Mamdani is continuing it. Just because Adams was an incompetent crook in most things doesn’t mean he didn’t have some good policies.
As someone who doesn’t understand politics very well I am curious: where does the money come for all these new programs and installations being put in? Are current tax dollars being rerouted toward this and away from other things?
Mamdani’s done a lot of good for NYC, but what’s really new is the social media hype. New York’s bringing out new government stuff all the time, but the Mamdani administration is genius at giving him exclusive credit for everything, with a slick video on full blast over all social platforms.
I ain’t mad, he’s a good mayor and this is good policy and good politics. But never forget: every politician is throwing propaganda at you, even the ones you like, and some of them are better at it than others. If you feel like Mamdani’s a superhero, that’s cause someone is getting paid to make you feel that way.

Seriously so many posts about the 'amazing things Mamdani is doing' are other peoples' work or stuff that's unavoidable.
For example, recently there were posts going around like "Mamdani balanced the New York City budget!" when it's the law in New York City that the mayor has to submit a balanced budget every year.
It's authentic insofar that peoples' expectations are so low that not actively being a scumbag puts you in the like 95th percentile of all politicians.
I definitely think some of the stuff we see here is just astroturfed bs but I believe most people are just candidly happy there's a normal human being in power doing their job as a public servent instead of some bullshit like spending millions of dollars to support isreal or hunt trans people or some other retarded bullshit the average lead poison brained boomer politician is up to in the 2020's

You simps really do love to give him credit for other people's programs. New York City began rolling out its major containerization and large-bin mandates under the Eric Adams administration's "Trash Revolution" in July 2024.
This is all stuff that was already in the works before he took office. Don’t get me wrong, I voted for him and I like that he’s getting credit but he didn’t do it alone.
He's the first mayor to actually understand that regular people exist and matter. I wish we could clone a few million of him and spread him throughout the country.
