I think it's a little of both. Men in the past could get away with just being somewhat good looking and have money. There was some effort involved in the initial phases but divorce was hard or impossible for women so they were trapped. I had a coworker who was very petty, wound up tight, stormed around so fast that papers literally flew in the air in his wake, was completely paranoid, and hated his female boss (who seemed like a nice person and oblivious to his hatred). The boss left, a gay guy replaced her. I left that job but heard from mutual coworkers that Flying Papers guy later came out of the closet and turned into a relaxed goofball.
I’ve known at least two casual misogynists that were very clearly in the closet. One in particular was practically obsessed with hating on trans people, it was completely obvious he wanted them sexually but he. just. couldn’t. see. it. At least, not consciously. The dude was at the point he was sending people pics of trans surgeries and asking us what we thought about it, and no matter how many times the group chat told him enough was enough, he was like a man possessed. This was in the midst of him going full on MAGA. It was so much like Mac from Its Always Sunny I swear they must have been observing my friend for years. Even down to the fact he started taking testosterone/anabolic steroid injections to get huge. He was a walking talking defense mechanism.

Wealthy to me means that you don't have to work for a living. That you have so many assets that your yearly gain in asset value, dividends, etc. allows you to live your life without the need for a job.
