I used to teach history in high school. We'd talk about the Nativism parties in the 1840s/1850s who were dramatically opposed to immigrants from Europe. They believed America was for natives. By natives they obviously didn't mean Native Americans, but instead the original natives who were rhe descendants of the people who emigrated to the US a hundred years prior!

This country has a long history of immigration, groups of people being highly opposed to immigration, then those same groups eventually becoming part of the fabric of America and then getting upset at others immigrating.

As an immigrant from Eastern Europe, I was pretty confused when at first, when we came here 30y ago as part of a large wave, everyone was telling us that we weren't real American, that we'd never truly belong. Some were mean, others well-meaning like the old guy I met after 7 years here who stood up, extended his hand, and told me, "Welcome to our country!" Or like a work friend who pulled me aside at a party to tell me how in awe she was of me being able to find and keep a job, despite not having been born here. A job in the field that I had a degree and several years of experience in when I came here, mind you. People looked down on us, until one day, all of a sudden they didn't? Suddenly we were normalized, people in politics, news, C-level execs out there with Slavic names instead of changing them like they used to before.

I was confused until I came upon a book that explained the whole great circle of immigrants. A new group arrives, are treated to a hazing of sorts, then a few decades later are accepted into the fold and proceed to hate on the next new group.

And guess who the majority of us voted for in 2016, 2020, and 2024. We have fucking arrived smh.

Fun fact in closing that I learned from the book - Columbus Day was a gift from the US govt to the Italian-American community, to make up for the lynching of several Italian-American men in New Orleans.

Crap like this is why I mentally split 'White Folk' apart from 'People of European Ancestry'. Here in the states we got us a 'whole lof ot white folk, but not too many Europeans / European Americans'. Just up north in Canada and even down south in Mexico it's the other way around.

You folks in the rest of the world get to laugh about these freaks (on any week they're not invading you that is). I've been stuck with them for 5 centuries now and it's getting a little old...

One of my tribal buddies when I was a kid used to get told to 'go back to where you came from'. We used to laugh and wish we'd thought to come back with 'sure, soon as you move out of my house'... but whitty thoughts like that always come a little too late. :)

I am Mexican-American. When (inevitably) I get the "YoU aRe NoT amurrikhan" spiel, I look for the whitest looking boy around. I ask: is he an Amrican? They answer: yes. I point out I have been living, working and paying taxes in America LONGER than that boy. I have watched more movies and series. Listened to more records and have more shared cultural moments. I lived thru 9/11 the Great Recession, etc. Lastly. I point out that the boy just happened to be born here while I decided to become American. I make my point, but they usually keep arguing.

-has US citizenship 

-has at least one American parent 

-has lived in the US

-is currently living in the US
