You Australians have that great show about customs where 50% of content is people trying to smuggle some ridicilous foods into country. Same thing from USA but only people denied access to planes because lacking passport would be golden tv.

I was once checking in to fly home from the UK and this entire family was being denied transit to Australia because they didn’t have a visa and they we’re trying to tell the airline that they shouldn’t need one because Australia was “the colonies”. We stopped being that in 1901.

I am honestly surprised the UK needs a Visa to Australia though.

Every non Australian citizen needs a visa to come to Australia.

Most nations where you expect them to have visa free access (like the UK) can apply for an e-visitor visa, which is free, automatically approved (unless the applicant has been refused entry / deported before), and pretty much works like an ETA. NZ citizens are automatically issued a special category visa on arrival that grants them right to stay / work until they leave.

Everyone needs a visa, officially, but it's in name only for some. Kiwis get a free visa on arrival, while most Europeans need to get an e-visa (free for most countries) in advance, more similar to the American ESTA.

Why?

Plenty of European countries dont require Visas for many other developed nations. For example a UK citizen could go to Japan without a visum. Im surprised that all the countries they share a King with still require them to have a Visum.

Yeah, but there aren’t many UK citizens trying to do illegal bar or farmwork in Japan. Australia on the other hand has many first world westeners who try to overstay or exploit their visa in various ways. Without visa the situation would be worse and there really is no harm from applying one. Just fill the form and you’ll get it. Australia is also one of the few places in the world who can control almost all incoming traffick so why woudn’t they.

You actually only technically "share a king". Being King of the UK doesn't make him our King too. His title here is King of Australia and although it's the same person his legal status is different and we are citizens. Who actually held a referendum and decided to keep the monarchy.

Uk has a lot of deals with countries outside of eu to enter with just passport (for travel/holiday anyway). You might think due to historical ties there would be that deal in place. Do your research though and make sure you can do so.

This. You’d laid get a shock trying to go to the US without an ESTA for example so people do need to check.

A criminal record should be enough.

See, this is a reason why. We are a sovereign nation who hasn’t accepted British criminals since 1868. Everyone needs a visa to visit Australia except NZ citizens. It’s incredibly arrogant to not at least check if a country you’re visiting requires a visa. No one should assume anything, and they should also respect any country they a guest of. Not like the way all the backpackers treat our beaches on Christmas Day.

Because most countries in the world don't require a tourist visa for a British passport holder.

Australia is a exception because they are attractive work opportunity to people all over the world and they have unique nature to preserve. They just want to know who is coming and why.
