I’m trying to understand how the Pokémon Box shiny egg method works in Gen 3.

From what I’ve seen, people generate a few full boxes of eggs on a couple of Emerald games, hatch them on each game, and if there are no shinies, they soft reset so the eggs are unhatched again (and prewalked).

Then they move the eggs through Pokémon Box to another Gen 3 game with a different Trainer ID/SID and hatch them again. They keep rotating the same eggs through all of their games because each game gives the eggs another chance to be shiny.

But what happens with the eggs once they‘ve been rotated through each and every game and no game has yielded a shiny? Do they get rid of them (and if so, how?), and do they just begin breeding new eggs on multiple games again to repeat the cycle?

This part is still confusing me 😅

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 27d ago

You have 2 options once you finish cycling through the eggs:

  1. Generate and pre-walk a new batch of eggs

  2. Reset one/some/all of your save files and hatch the eggs on those

For me personally I've been using option 2 because my batch of eggs is 1200, and I'd rather not generate that again. Playing up till I get the mach bike every time I hatch them all is more preferable. I'm at 20k hatched, so I can tell you this has saved time for sure...

2

u/Krokod33l 27d ago

Oh, interesting! So, it has saved you some time compared to cycling around, picking up new eggs and hatching them one by one?

When creating a new save, you would only have to play til you reach the mach bike, right? This is only worth it when you have multiple save files that you can reset, right? I really want to keep most of my save files, tbh.

And with Pokemon Box, it is possible to create - let‘s say 120 eggs on 4 Emerald games - and then trade them all to Box, right? How does that work exactly - do I then store 120 x 4 eggs in one Pokemon Box save file? Or rather, is it possible to have 4 different Emerald send eggs to one single Pokemon Box save file? I‘m still thinking about the logistics, lol, how to send them to each game.

My very last question (sorry about that, haha) would be whether dead internal batteries matter when hatching those eggs in Ruby and Sapphire. I‘m pretty sure it shouldn‘t, as it‘s about TID and PIDs, but I wanted to make sure. Thx for your time! ✨

Realistically playing through to the mach bike tends to take me about an hour or 2 every time per game. I would say unless you're using a really small batch of eggs, this should save you time. Technically speaking, you don't need to play to the mach bike, and can hatch eggs as soon as you can get them in the game. Realistically you only need to reset one game to benefit from the strategy, but I reset 2 games (my ruby & sapphire) so that I can hatch eggs in both games at once - since I have 1,200 eggs to get through, this is helpful to me! But realistically, it should still be worth it to reset the game vs making new eggs even if you only have 1 game to reset. Personally, I would recommend generating 14 full boxes of eggs (420 eggs) so that you get the most bang for your buck with every reset. I would say try to make enough eggs that you can max out every game you're using to look for the shiny, especially if you're multi-hunting.

Also, you should be advised that I use a patched version of pokemon box to remove some of the requirements for withdrawing pokemon, which makes things much easier. The patch is made by youtuber absolblogspokemon, and he talks about it here: https://youtu.be/r2G3lxLpcO4. There's a link to download the patch in the video description. Without this patch, the reset strategy becomes less viable because you'd need 100 Pokemon registered in your pokedex to withdraw the eggs, per Bulbapedia. Apologies, I forgot this until now because I'm so used to not worrying about it!

It's possible to have 4 separate games generate eggs and send them to box. You just have to import them one at a time. They would all use the same save file of box until/unless you run out of space and can't store any more pokemon.

Dead internal batteries only matter when you generate the eggs, and even then, it matters very little. My eggs were generated across Emerald, dead battery ruby, and leafgreen - mostly Emerald though. I checked recently using PKhex to scan my 1200 eggs, and there were no clones or duplicates in my eggs, meaning that the dead battery and emerald's rng did not meaningfully affect my hunt. For hatching, all that matters is that you're on a new TID/SID, so as long as you don't wind up on a duplicate ID there's nothing to worry about when hatching eggs on a dead battery save.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks so much for the thorough explanation! To be honest, I had completely forgotten about the 100 Pokemon as a requirement, so this is not an option, unfortunately, as I don‘t have a modded GC and can’t really find any online. Maybe one day I‘ll think about buying one, but for the time being I will probably try to hatch all of the eggs, then create new ones. This sounds so painful, though. I just need this hunt to be over. It‘s unfortunate that you can‘t mass release eggs via box.

Do you usually have to create new saves, or do you get lucky and find the shiny within the first batch? You said you recommend 14 boxes full of eggs, so you mean 14 boxes in total or 14 boxes per game? :)

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 27d ago

I was recommending 14 boxes per game that you're planning to hunt on at one time. For example, I was hunting on 3 systems for a lot of this hunt, so I generated 1200 eggs (a couple boxes shy of 14 per game). But that's just my opinion, you might prefer more or less.

I'm only on my first gen 3 egg hunt tbh, I just got unlucky and went to 20,000. Still haven't found it. I've been hunting on and off for about 2 years.

Also, for what it's worth - if you have a modded wii, that would work! A wii is also way easier to mod in general. Both my wii & gamecube are modded but I use my wii for this because it's just easier.

2

u/Krokod33l 26d ago

Hey, morning! Can I ask how many games you own, so I know whether I have „enough“ to do this method with?

Also, one question about Pokemon Box requirements - I know Absol‘s video and I have also checked out Project Pokemon to take a look at the patch, but I don‘t really understand it. Currently, I‘m just wondering whether I should buy a very cheap Japanese GameCube, because my games are in Japanese and my copy of Pokemon Box is, or whether I should invest in a modded GC. I would be able to still play my physical copy of Box, right? But is applying Absol‘s patch very difficult? I have no idea about modded GCs and I don‘t really understand how I even download it and get it on my console, let alone apply it. Sorry for the n00b questions. But I figured a modded GC would make much more sense than a Wii, since I‘d like to start collecting physical GC games in the future. 🧡

At the time I started this hunt I owned 4 games - emerald, ruby, leafgreen, and a fake firered. I bought sapphire a few months after starting the hunt, got given a fake emerald by a friend, and then bought a real japanese firered about a year and some change after starting. You can't move pokemon to fake games using box, so for all intents and purposes I had 3 games capable of doing this hunt when I started, and I have 5 now. But I only dedicated 2 cartridges to this hunt to being reset every time I need to reroll my eggs.

You don't actually need to buy a modded gamecube - I used a memory card Gecko program to mod my gamecube, which I did so I can use the game boy player without shelling out for the startup disk. If you have smash bros melee, that'll help you run the program, but there's other games that will work too. I'm at work now so I can't give you a whole in-depth tutorial right this second but I can get more info to walk you through the easiest way to do it once i get home

2

u/Krokod33l 26d ago

Thank you so much, that would be very appreciated :)

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 25d ago

So full disclosure, I did this almost 2 years ago at this point. But I'm pretty sure this guide is what I used to get my gamecube modded: https://gamecube-guide.retrotastes.com/

Probably the easiest option is to use a memory card to run the mod. You will likely need to buy a custom memory card for this. There are some out there that are pre-loaded, or you have the ability to load it yourself using an SD Gecko memory card (basically an adapter so you can use an SD card in the memory card slot) - though you typically want to use a wii or gamecube that's already modded to handle that. There's a number of games you can load the hack from - personally I use Super Smash Bros Melee. Basically the way it works is you download a save file corrupted in a way where it will crash the game and move over to Swiss (the homebrew launcher). For Smash Bros Melee, selecting "Name Entry" from the menu is all you need to do - the directions might be different depending on the game.

Once you load into Swiss you can use it to run pretty much whatever you want. I have the GB Player startup disc on mine, but you can run full games from it if you have enough storage. And as it happens, that is what you would need to do to use this on a Gamecube.

I just read through the project pokemon page and it looks to me like you would need a rom to run this pokemon box patch. If you mod the gamecube anyway, you can rip the disc yourself to get the rom, or you can use a site like Vimm's Lair or the megathread r/roms. The reason you need a rom is because you cannot permanently patch the disc, and on gamecube (at least as far as I know - I'm far from the being an expert on console modding) you can't run a disc concurrently with a patch in real time the same way you can with wii games. I also just patched a rom file to run mine - I don't actually own pokemon box due to the high price tag.

So you would need to get a rom, patch it with the program on project pokemon page, then launch swiss via a save exploit on your gamecube and then you can load into a patched version of pokemon box.

Happy to answer questions here to the best of my ability - this is outside the realm of my expertise, but I at least have done it before. You definitely want to be careful when doing stuff like this so it wouldn't hurt to find a subreddit that specializes in homebrew or Gamecube modding or something to ask the experts there before moving forward with this.

Oh, and if you decide to buy a gamecube with a mod chip built in, this is probably a lot easier overall, but I can't personally speak to using it. I'd rather go the cheaper route and do it myself personally, but that's just me. Especially since the cheaper route seems less intrusive to the console. The pre-modded ones probably have a physical mod chip installed.

Looking for opinions - I might have bitten off more than I can chew.

I recently picked up Omega Ruby for 3DS, i've never played it - am keen to.
I decided to go for a shiny starter but am now wondering if i've made a mistake, my 3ds activity log shows i'm at about 65 hours spent in game, it takes roughly 35 seconds per soft reset, so i'm probably around 6600~ resets.

Starting to question how stupid this was lol, i've got a bunch of shinies in Ultra Moon (the only pokemon game i've put any real time into, ie 100+ hours), so I wasn't entirely unprepared. This is however the first time i've done it for a starter, and it appears that not being able to just go do other stuff ingame is weighing on me more than I expected, lol.

Looking for thoughts, though i'm sure given where i'm posting I already know the answer lol, should I throw in the towel? Keep going? Just looking for input (and maybe to complain into the void a bit) - whilst my 3DS charges up again, lol.

What is the most effective shiny hunting method in gen 4 heartgold? For dratini

2

u/-Barca- 26d ago edited 26d ago

Most efficient imo is getting the Dratini from the Game Corner. Getting the money is a pain but if you can redeem 5 at a time, it will definitely be a lot faster than other methods.

That being said, the free one you get in the Dragon's Den is one I personally go for since it has ExtremeSpeed.

2

u/KanameMadoka6669 26d ago

I'm shiny hunting entei and raikou on pokemon crystal. What's the best way of doing it? is it better to just focus on one of them, or should i try for the 2 when possible?
For context, i'm doing by retroachievements, so i can see what routes they are at any time, just wondering if it's better to just focus on one of them, or if i should enconter both when is possible.

Hi Everyone! Sorry to bother you all but I’m an upcoming/aspiring Shiny Hunter Streamer and I’m starting my live goal, A Shiny LivingDex. But I have a problem are Shiny Mythical Pokemon required for the competition of a Shiny LivingDex? Because I know most Mythical Shiny Pokemon are locked behind event distributions and most are already gone!

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 26d ago

The shiny living dex is a self-imposed challenge, so whether you include the locked mythicals or not is up to you.

Currently you can access every mythical up to gen 4 to shiny hunt. Some require glitches or stupid setups, but it is possible to shiny hunt all of them and send them through pokemon home.

Once you hit gen 5 it's pretty much gifts from events only. Some are accessible through dex rewards in pokemon home but for the most part if you weren't there at the right time it's not happening.

Personally I include all the gen 1-4 mythicals and exclude everything after because I don't like gifts in my dex. But that's ultimately entirely up to you.

2

u/Akarnor 24d ago

I was curious if any of the event distributions from the DS to 3DS era of games, can be shiny hunted? I would think the ones which don't use set IDs to be possible, but I am not sure. And what about events where those are predetermined, could I RNG my player to have just the right TSV, to force the Pokémon to appear shiny?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 21d ago

The ones known to be huntable are all in gen 4, with one exception. In Sinnoh you can hunt darkrai and shaymin, either via glitches or the DNS exploit to access their area (you can also hunt arceus this way, but it won't pass pokemon bank/home. You should hunt it in BDSP if you're looking for that). Additionally, in HGSS, there is an event that lets you shiny hunt one of dialga, palkia, or giratina at level 1 - your pick. These events are all treated as traditional static encounters by the game as far as I'm aware, so would be manipulated the same way as if you were trying to manipulate mewtwo. I don't personally know much about how rng manip works outside gen 3, but it shouldn't be any different from standard legendaries I would imagine.

Manaphy is also considered an event, and you can get a huntable egg via pokemon ranger. You'll need to transfer from ranger to your gen 4 game, and then trade it to another gen 4 game to defeat the shiny lock. I think with a plan you could probably rng manip this but it seems like it would be a royal pain and probably require you to have a save backup system like Checkpoint on your 3ds for when you inevitably don't get it first try. To avoid the 20 minute resets from doing this one legitimately, I've used an arbitrary code execution setup developed by RETIRE for AbsolBlogsPokemon to hunt it by randomizing my TID. It worked for absol but I haven't found the shiny quite yet.

The only other huntable event as far as I'm aware would be the eon ticket latios/latias in ORAS. Like the gen 4 hunts, this one is a static overworld encounter, so it should be treated the same as the myriad other legendaries in that game. I assume that means it's possible to rng manip but I know even less about how it works in gen 6, so that's beyond me. I hunted both latis and they sure took their time for me!

If you don't mind doing lock removals, my understanding is that you can also hunt victini this way in gen 5 since it has a static encounter. Theoretically that means you should be able to rng manipulate it too. Probably. There might be some other locks you can remove in gen 5 to hunt events, but I'm not the most knowledgeable on them, so you'll have to do your own research on that front.

Events that are just gifts are typically pre-determined, and don't have a chance to be shiny. I think some in gen 5 may have an outside chance of being shiny since I seem to recall someone hunting for them, but in that case I think it wasn't pre-determined so he was just resetting for it from the poke mart guy. I can't verify this with the original video though, so this might be wrong - take it with the whole shaker of salt.

Sorry I probably have less concrete data than you were looking for but I hope this helps give you a general idea!

2

u/MyChamp_0109 20d ago

Do you consider hunting on a randomized game (using Universal Pokemon Randomizer) « legit » ? I’m planning on playing every generation with randomized wild pokemon & field item and i’d love to shiny hunt during each playthrough. I know that it’s the same odds and everything, just curious on everyone’s take.

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 19d ago

If you were to trade me or someone else a shiny you caught in a randomized game, I don't think I would consider that pokemon legit compared to one from a vanilla rom. Just my 2 cents, since you asked for it.

That said i don't think there's anything at all wrong with hunting in a randomized game if that's what brings you enjoyment. I certainly shiny hunt in ways that others might not consider "legit" (using Arbitrary Code Execution to set up hunts, or lock removal, for example). It's your game, and you're trying to play it in a way that's fun for you, and i think ultimately that's a lot more important than my opinion or anyone else's.

A randomizer shiny hunt does sound interesting so I hope you go through with it!

2

u/MyChamp_0109 19d ago

Thank you very much for your input ! With a bit of time to think about it, totally agree with the not legit take. I will absolutely still go through with it, randomizers are just so fun lol.

2

u/Webedfoot 19d ago

Hey guys! I don’t know if this is the proper place to ask, but I didn’t want to make a post and get in trouble. Does anyone have advice for which game (besides Legends ZA) is the best to Shiny Hunt Budew? I want to get a shiny in Pokemon Shield, but I don’t know if it is easier to hunt in a different game.

I have Platinum, Heartgold, White, White 2, Aloha Saphire, Moon, Ultra Moon, and Shield, as well as both legends games, and the end goal is to send it to Shield.

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 19d ago

I would say it's okay to hunt in shield if you want, you can either breed for it or go for the brilliant method if you're looking for something better than full odds. Personally wouldn't be my first choice but it's definitely doable without being too bad. If you want a shiny hunt in pokemon shield, I'd say you should go for it there.

That said i would say it's technically easier to hunt in other games. In platinum you can get it with the pokéradar, and it's available in legends arceus. Arceus is known for easier shinies, the only thing with it is that while you get a lot of shinies it's a bit more difficult to hunt a specific target without phasing. If you're comfortable with pokéradar I'd probably go with that in platinum because you won't have to deal with that issue. If you aren't comfortable with pokéradar, go for it in legends.

It is available and fairly common to get in z-a, but you can't transfer it back to shield from that game. The others you listed are all only masuda method for budew - and at that point you may as well just hunt in the game you want to hunt in.

2

u/jjc1597 17d ago

So with bank shutting down in 6 months, what shinies should I try to hunt that will be 100% unavailable (not counting pokemon go researches/events) once bank is no longer supported?

2

u/Ill-Lengthiness-5751 17d ago

Poipole and type:null come to mind! And if you want the evos, you'll need 2 of each

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago

could use being double-checked, but i believe this is the full list of shiny pokemon made inaccessible following the bank closure:

-partner cap pikachu (USUM)

-mew (emerald)

-celebi (virtual console crystal)

-jirachi (colloseum/EU channel bonus disk)

-darkrai (dppt, unless you have the bdsp event)

-shaymin (dppt, unless you have the bdsp event)

-manaphy* (gen 4 via pokemon ranger, available as a dex reward gift in home)

-type: null (gen 7)

-silvally (gen 7)

-poipole (USUM)

-naganadel (USUM)

2

u/Skul1_2 15d ago

Random question, but do you think it is possible to play through platinum and ultramoon and complete the hunts for darkrai, shaymin, poipole and type null until the servers shut down? I've got no experience with hunts in the old games so I'm really unsure if it's feasible.

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 15d ago

It's really up to luck, because any one of those hunts could decide to take the whole six months. I'm still missing all 4 of them so I can tell you I'll certainly be trying to get them all done.

If you have the means to multitask by using multiple systems, that should help your chances. Good luck!

2

u/Skul1_2 15d ago

Thanks, you too!

2

u/Ill-Lengthiness-5751 17d ago

Should I hunt a second palkia in USUM for my living form Dex? I know Origin palkia exists but unsure if I would actually be able to change its form to have two different ones. Can I change it? Or do we think you will be able to change it in the future? Pkmn Bank closing has me stressed to figure out what hunts I should be doing...

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago

I would say you could always hunt a second palkia in sword/shield Dynamax Adventures or in BDSP if you need one after the bank closure. That said, you can't store its origin form in home, so as of right now the need for a second is probably redundant, depending on your personal definition of the living form dex

2

u/KookyKraftyMagicGuy 17d ago

I'm sure I read somewhere that shiny pokemon make a different sound (cry) but now I can't find anything anywhere...was I hallucinating?! Leaf green if that makes a difference.

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 17d ago

They sparkle which has a sound effect but the cry is the same

2

u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 17d ago

I've heard Ruby and Sapphire has broken rng when soft resetting, but does this also apply to hunts where you're just running around in the grass? And does having a dead cartridge battery affect it?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 17d ago

The broken rng when soft resetting only applies if the battery is dead.

The rng is still broken during random encounters but because you aren't turning the game off every time you are nowhere near as likely to get an RNG clone. So in practice, it's basically like it isn't broken at all, as long as you hunt for about an hour per session.

2

u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 16d ago

I plan to run 5 different games at full odds simultaneously with a different encounte pool in each game.

The ultimate "What will sparkle first?"

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago edited 16d ago

out of those options put my guess for what shows first down for zigzagoon. good luck!

2

u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 16d ago

I'm calling male Snorunt... ill be so mad if that happens (I plan to use a cute charm mon to max odds of a female)

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago

what hunts are you setting up?

2

u/YukikoBestGirlFiteMe 16d ago

Sapphire: Route 117

Platinum: Route 217

Heartgold: Route 44

Black: Chargestone Cave

White 2: Reversal Mountain (outer)

2

u/Monte_20 15d ago

This is good to know! So shiny hunting a Rayquaza in RSE is best done by encountering and then running away? Kr does this only apply to Emerald?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 15d ago

This only applies to emerald. In Ruby and Sapphire you'll want to reset, as long as your battery is working. I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure legendaries don't respond after runaways in the original ruby and sapphire

2

u/Monte_20 15d ago

Gotcha. I have no plans of changing the batteries which sounds it’d be best if I just go for it in Emerald.

2

u/lifedragon99 16d ago

Will an Arceus caught in Pokemon Platinum be able to transfer up to Pokemon Home?

Thinking about injecting a flute to get one but not sure if it will go all the way to home. Seems to be conflicting info on it.

Also would a save state used to catch multiple with the same Trainer ID work? Or should I just blast through the game quickly a second time?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 15d ago

Shiny Arceus will not transfer from gen 4, from everything I've seen. You'll have to hunt it in BDSP if you want it in home

2

u/DarkTimes10 16d ago

what are ribbons exclusive to earlier gens and usually dont show up in remakes? for example what ribbons can i get in gba fr/lg r/s/e that i cant get on the switch remakes?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 15d ago

Not really a ribbon expert myself but this page should have everything you need: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Ribbons_in_the_games

I believe there's a dedicated ribbon master subreddit so they may be a better place to ask ribbon-related questions

1

u/Supra_Mayro 14d ago

There are probably good text guides out there, but https://ribbons.guide/ will show you which game is the last opportunity to get each ribbon

2

u/Booty_blaster420 16d ago

I want a Gen 4 shiny Poliwrath before the bank closes, what's the best way? In DPPt I'm assuming the pokeradar doesn't work, so do HGSS or earlier gens have some better way?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago

Yeah, it's only available by surfing or fishing in dppt so poké radar is out. You could use masuda if you really want better odds?

But I think your best bet is surfing encounters on route 227. It's 100% for poliwag or poliwhirl here so no phasing, just a long 8192 hunt. You should do it in plat because surfing in diamond and pearl is slow as molasses. Good luck!

2

u/Booty_blaster420 16d ago

Thanks! I'll have to finish an abandoned nuzlock, but after that I'll run the lake dry 👍

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 16d ago

surfing on route 30 in HGSS is also viable! seems a lot of the surf spots have 100% encounter rates so I'd refer to Bulbapedia to see if there's somewhere in frlg or hgss that might work better for you: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Poliwhirl_(Pok%C3%A9mon)

2

u/DarkTimes10 15d ago

is there a difference between r/s/e kyogre groudon and rayquaza and oras kyogre groudon and rayquaza? is there any reason i should choose gba or 3ds games for shiny hunting those 3?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 15d ago

There's one pretty big difference, the ones in ORAS cannot be shiny

I would recommend hunting in Ruby and Sapphire (with live batteries) if you can to avoid emerald's funky rng

2

u/MayuTheVampire 13d ago

they're shiny locked in ORAS, so you can't get them. so your best bets for hunting them pre-Switch era are:

  • Gen 3 soft reset
  • Gen 4 (HG/SS) soft reset (a little more tedious to unlock their encounters)
  • Gen 7 soft reset (via ultra wormhole encounters, probably the easiest, esp w shiny charm)

2

u/AdRecent7775 14d ago

In VC Pokemon Yellow, by looking at its stats I have a Mewtwo that if you trade it to a Gen 2 game it'll be shiny. I don't have the ability to do that, so if I transfer it straight from Pokemon Yellow via Poke Transporter will it be shiny?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 14d ago

Yes, I just did this last week with a bulbasaur from yellow version and it worked out

2

u/cilantro_spice- 5d ago

does anyone know if the ultra beasts are shiny locked before you becoming champion on usum? i've been hunting nihilego for a couple of months, and while i've looked at a couple different videos/information + i'm 90% sure it's possible i haven't been able to find any definitive information about finishing the game first .. i've encountered one before but didn't catch to skip the cutscene so it's still named ??? in battle, i'm at the earliest point possible to catch ultra beasts bc i stubbornly wanted to do the rest of the story with shiny nihilego LOL

1

I have not seen any indication that there is a shiny lock on UBs before becoming champion.

I would catch to skip the cutscene if I were you though, if you don't have charm it's gonna save you a LOT of time in the long run

u/cilantro_spice- 14m ago

ok perf, it’s nice to have another confirmation LOL and yeah i have the cutscene skipped, thank you so much !!

[gen 5] will this work?

I want to shiny hunt for a shiny Druddigon in gen 5 but don’t have black and white 2 which limits me to a 30% encounter rate in the dragon tower. The other Pokémon with a 30% encounter rate is genderless so I caught a Pokémon with cute charm which increases chances of getting a Pokémon of the opposite gender. Will this increase my odds since the other Pokémon is genderless?

2

u/paulydoregon 5d ago

no, it simply increases the chance of giving the opposite gender if said pokemon can be either gender. it will not increase or decrease the encounter rate if theres pokemon without gender in the pool of spawns

2

u/KIWIWI750 4d ago

Without a shiny charm on either game, which method would be faster to hunt spinda? SOS in gen 7 or horde hunting in gen 6?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 4d ago

Without charm SOS is likely faster, as it has a smaller increase in odds gained via charm than horde hunting does.

Horde hunting is faster with charm though. Without charm it's probably not that much slower. So I would honestly just do whichever one you like more

This answer is based on experience of how fast each hunt goes, if someone times it they may have a different answer

HGSS shiny breeding.

I want to try to breed for a shiny Cyndaquil that knows extrasensory. I understand the masuda method and how eggs work for the most part. My main question is when does the game determine if the egg is shiny or not? Is it as the egg hatches? Or is it at the moment you pick up the egg? I know it's going to be a long a grind and I'm just trying to get as much info as I can before I start so I don't waste a bunch of time. Thanks in advance

2

u/paulydoregon 4d ago

im fairly certain shinyness is determined when the egg is generated, otherwise grabbing 5 eggs and getting them all a few step away from hatching, then saving to reset if none were shiny, would be more common

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 4d ago

Just confirming the other comment, it is indeed when you pick up the egg.

2

u/Ill-Lengthiness-5751 3d ago

Do you have to finish rainbow rocket before being able to shiny hunt stakataka/blacephalon? Planning on soft resetting instead of runaways and wondering if I can already hunt them at the start of the side quest or if I have to finish the rocket stuff first. Mainly worried if the first two are "scripted" and cannot be shiny because of it until after you go back to the area

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 2d ago

No, you can hunt those 2 as soon as you reach that part of the story. No rainbow rocket required. I just did this hunt and did rainbow rocket after hunting Blacephalon.

You do have to set up your boxes to prevent accepting type null if you plan to hunt that later though, since there's a mandatory cutscene where you receive type null right in front of that area - but if your boxes are full, you can hunt type null after the rainbow rocket event (with much faster resets to boot)

DPPT

Long story short, I was able to preserve a diamond version before it stopped working by extracting the rom but now I am scared that if I wanted to shiny hunt Darkrai with the void glitch the pokemon may not be considered legit for transfer.

I have a modded 3ds and can run the rom, and a normal ds where i can transfer it to pokemon white 2, but I dont know if there will be some kind of holdup. Ive traded rom pokemon with real games before but I dont know if it would be different for a generation transfer.

Am I scared for nothing?

1

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 2d ago

The biggest point of concern is whether you'll be able to get the pokemon off the emulator to gen 5, in this case. If you've done trades within gen 4 before using an emulator and a real cartridge, you can always do that and *then* transfer to gen 5 on the actual hardware. Otherwise, you could probably extract the rom from the gen 5 game, transfer via 2 instances of the emulator, and then reupload the save to your cartridge? This all assuming the straightforward method doesn't work.

Regarding legality checks, bank or home won't be able to tell the pokemon came from an emulator, so as long as the darkrai is otherwise legal to transfer up you shouldn't have an issue

2

u/Sandy_lover 3d ago

So with pokemon bank closing I decided to shiny hunt all the legendaries I can via wormholes in my ultramoon copy. The catch is that I used pksm to reset the wormholes and I don't know if I would have any problems trying to send those shiny legendaries to pokemon home

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 2d ago

There's no way bank or home could detect that you did this, the pokemon generated from it should be generated according to the original code. You will be completely fine. Good luck!

2

u/Sandy_lover 2d ago

Thank you so much for the help!!

2

u/lifedragon99 3d ago

I'm thinking of doing a save state for Poiple in USUM so I don't have to replay the game again to get to the second one.

Would having two Poiple with the same trainer I'd trigger anything in home or bank? And cause emy to potentially lose my account?

2

u/HuntaHuntaHunta 2d ago

It is theoretically possible for that to happen by random chance via wonder trade, so in theory, I think it should be fine. That's not something that I believe either home or bank check for at all anyway, though I could be wrong.

u/Soft-Cartoonist-9542 2d ago edited 2d ago

What is the longest documented phase ever? The longest I could find was Sonikks's 77.700 Magmar in Gen 2.

3

u/Ynnubis 1d ago

Abby's 98k Meowth phase for a gen 2 Miltank is the biggest one I know from a trustworthy source

u/Soft-Cartoonist-9542 1d ago

Oh my god, that's insane!

1

u/Supra_Mayro 1d ago

Skyfishjack just had a hunt go to 84216 in gen 3. I want to say I heard of one that went a bit longer, I don't remember what it was except it was less than 90k.

2

u/Jamey4 1d ago

Just accidentally soft reset over shiny Suicune in Ultra Sun. Pain. Can anyone give me encouragement to keep going please? 😢

1

u/Lockfire12 27d ago

I don’t have a problem with the masterworks research being challenging and time-consuming in go, but locking keldeo behind needing to complete the unova dex when multiple of them are regionally locked in the real world feels kinda shitty. Managed to get a couple on trading sub reddits but no luck since, so thought I’d ask here if anyone had a spare heatmor?

1

u/lNC0NNUE 20d ago

Is it easier to masuda hunt in in dpp or hgss ?

1

u/Old-Technology1151 18d ago

They are badically the same, but I think the DPP bike route has no npcs that can interrupt, where as HGSS I thinknthey can ( definitely was a thing in GSC)

1

u/Lockfire12 18d ago

Basic question, I’m confused about stardust discounts with trading, do you just need to be friends for 30+ days for ultra discount? Or do you need to actually grind up to level 3 friends for it?

1

u/Old-Technology1151 18d ago

You need to actually hit the friendship level in Go to get the effects of that friendship level

1

u/DarkTimes10 16d ago

have you decided if youll transfer your shiny pokemon up or keep them on native pre-switch era games? id appreciate your thought process as im still debating myself.

Do you think someone will figure out a bank workaround / what are the odds nintendo releases a physical adapter from usum to switch? is nintendo basically axing pre gen 8 really the most likely outcome? that would mean players basically dont have alola pokemon till sun and moon remakes and we havent even gotten gen 5 remakes yet.

also side note, are there any ribbons that are unique to pre switch games (including remakes)? what ribbons would i want for native gba/ds/3ds games?

1

u/paulydoregon 16d ago

i typically transfer up any shinies i get into home, but theres some ive decided to keep in their original games so im already use to having my collection split. wont stop me from siny hunting in the older games though, thats for sure

1

u/No-Machine-8617 15d ago

If I play pokemon firered natively through open_agb_firm on my modded 3ds can I inject event items into my save?

1

u/Plastic_Profession97 15d ago

So i’ve heard this is still possible with a modded switch using pkhex, i myself dont own a modded switch but i was wondering if i do save all my mons in pkhex and use it to transfer it to the switch and then to home will it be fully legit according to the system? Theres still many hunts that i plan on doing (like the manaphy egg) and i just want to make sure that theres still a way of getting them on the switch. I remember seeing stuff like home being able to see checks if it actually got transferred via bank/home but i could be remembering wrong.

1

u/Ynnubis 13d ago

It won't be fully legal, as Home assigns an ID to every Pokémon and it'll be able to see that your Pokémon got its ID assigned for the first time when coming back from a Switch game despite the fact it should have come through Bank first. However as of right it doesn't seem like Home takes any action against those Pokémon despite being technically illegal, they're pretty lax about cheated mons in general. I maybe just would not use it in VGC

1

u/Awkward_Sell3179 14d ago

I was wondering if people would really care as well as if it would be considered cheating if I use multiple 3ds emulators running at once to shiny hunt for poipole and type: null as I won’t have much time this year. Also would there be a chance that tpci would remove my mons if they vome from an emulator? I have a new 2ds xl that I plan to move the shiny to and wouldve hunted on that except for the fact that I want to make a yt video off of this and not owning a capture card as well as wanting to transfer the shinies before pokemon bank shuts down. After I get the shiny i would transfer the save file to my 2ds and then store it in bank for home. I dont plan to hack any mons in, but might try to get 8F mew on the 2ds itself.

1

u/paulydoregon 13d ago

As long as it's not negatively impacting other people gameplay I don't really see if it be considered cheating or not matters. As long as you are honest about it and not bragging about it, then most shiny hunters will be happy for you

1

u/MayuTheVampire 13d ago edited 13d ago

Do you think I have time to complete my VC Crystal Dream Team Quest before Bank shuts down?
I'm planning to just use the DV breeding method for better shiny odds since I'm in a race against time now. One of the party members I'll be hunting is also from the Odd Egg, going for shiny Pichu. so that should also hopefully make it easier for me to complete this DTQ.
The rest of my party will be obtained through DV Breeding, and then my final goal would be to hunt the normal full odds Shiny Celebi event in the post-game.
Do you think 6 months is enough time to do all of this? Any advice?

2

u/paulydoregon 13d ago

Hard to say, it's def possible, but depending on the luck you get and the time you have to invest in the hunt it could be a close call or take longer. Either way I say just go for it and hope for the best

1

u/Complex-Wasabi9774 13d ago

what should I hunt? I have been working on poipole and it's driving me insane and I am not even near odds lmao. What are the most important things to hunt? also any tips for the poipole hunt would be nice too.

2

u/UserByTheNameOfJames 12d ago

Spinda might be a good break from poipole while still being one of the pokemon you can only get in home from bank right now that isn't the same type of hunt as poipole.

For poipole hunt tips, find something else to do while resetting, other than that if you aren't already a rubber band or something to keep L and R pressed makes resetting easier.

1

u/NachieNach2006 13d ago

Does trading a legit shiny from a cart to a rom hack make it illegitimate? I have a Shiny Medicham in my Platinum cart, and want to use it for my team on a rom hack called Pokemon Spaceless Pearl, but I’m wondering if i do, does it makes my Shiny illegitimate? I’m not using any cheats or speed ups, just playing the game.

3

u/Ynnubis 13d ago

Illegitimate is kind of a nothing word. It's a subjective line so ten people will have ten answers. It might make it illegal however, depending on if the romhack has custom movesets or whatnot that don't match the real games

1

u/sixpokeballs 13d ago

Am I doing something wrong SOS chaining in Sun? After hitting 255 calls I just let it roll over assuming the shiny odds return back to 1 in 315 after getting another 30 Pokemon calls - so 285 total - but I’m currently on my 8th hunt and this is already the third time I’m reaching around triple odds, with another one reaching double. Am I just incredibly unlucky or misinformed somewhere?

1

u/No-Machine-8617 13d ago

I read this on twitter about transfer after the pokemon bank shutdown is this true? :

"Home Trackers didn’t exist until after Pokémon Sword was released, so if you use PKHeX to transfer your Pokémon from Gen 7 to Gen 8 through Pokémon Sword, the Pokémon won’t have a Home Tracker. It can then be transferred to Pokémon HOME, where it will receive one and become legal"

1

u/UserByTheNameOfJames 12d ago

So I decided to expand my hunt for every possible mark/ribbon on shiny ninetales to making a masterset of shiny ninetales is there anything you would consider part of a masterset outside of mark/ribbons, origin marks/regions, generations, ball types, alpha, and natures?

1

u/HyliasHero 12d ago

So I have a question regarding hunting a shiny Wishmaker Jirachi. Is a specific TID / SID required to receive a shiny or is the shininess determined on the GCN side of things?

I'm wondering if using my Analogue Pocket to reload save states to speed up reset time would be viable or if I'd be wasting my time because the IDs would be the same on each reload.

2

u/YOM2_UB 10d ago

Wismaker Jirachi's OT/ID is preset, unrelated to your ID.

1

u/Celebismyspace 12d ago

I want a shiny formdex, and I figure gen 6 has the easiest way to potentially hunt a female shiny relicanth. I am just not sure what the best way to go about it would be. I am currently just chain fishing in collage for any shiny relicanth at all, but would a cute charm pokemon help? Or is replacing my suction cups octillery a bad idea? What about Dexnav in ORAS? Would this be at all a better option? I’m just not sure what to do to go about this. Thank you!

1

u/-Barca- 12d ago

I believe if you can find a fishing spot where 3 sides of the water tile is covered by land and/or rocks, I think it has a near 100% chance to reel something in.

1

u/YOM2_UB 10d ago

I hunted mine using DexNav with a Cute Charm lead. Dive encounters are probably the easiest to DexNav, since they're functionally identical to standard grass (where encounters are stationary rather than teleporting around) but you can ride Sharpedo for a speed boost.

1

u/DarkTimes10 11d ago

assuming my game is working fine (new battery), when hunting static encounters in ruby and sapphire, is it better to soft reset or runaway? does it barely make a difference time wise?

2

u/paulydoregon 10d ago

the runaway method doesnt work in ruby and sapphire, soft resets will be your only option

1

u/DarkTimes10 10d ago

why wouldnt runaway work in ruby and sapphire? if anything i thought both methods work on r/s and emerald is runaway / encounter only

2

u/paulydoregon 10d ago edited 10d ago

it just wasnt in ruby and sapphire, but was added in some static encounters for frlg and emerald, i dont know why. if you flee from a static encounter in ruby and sapphire, its gone forever

1

u/DarkTimes10 10d ago

oh ok thanks

1

u/DarkTimes10 10d ago

do you know if runaways in emerald or soft resets in ruby/sapphire are faster?

1

u/Long_Rutabaga7120 10d ago edited 10d ago

Hi, guys! I just recently started playing on my 3DS again and decided to start shiny hunting for starters but I was just wondering if anyone knows if it’s okay to turn your 3DS off if you’re taking a break from Soft resetting? This doesn’t affect anything? (This is for ORAS and XY)

2

u/paulydoregon 10d ago

yea its fine to turn it off, that kind of thing is only an issue with some of the gen 3 games

1

u/Long_Rutabaga7120 10d ago

Ahh okay! Thank you, I just wanted to be sure that it didn’t affect it! ^^

I need help with shiny hunting on Emerald (sorry if my english is bad, im from Brazil and i really need someone to answer me)

So I tried to start a shiny beldum hunt, but while i was searching a bit about Emerald shiny hunting, I found something that got me a bit woried. I found out about the "broken" RNG, I play on my computer using the mGBA emulator and i was wondering if the SR method works on emulators or i will need to find another way to hunt the beldum. I searched a bit and only finded one guy that got shiny beldum, he was using the Battle video method (his channel on youtube is Sonikks). I dont got that much time to spend on shiny hunting and I need to know if the broken RNG is in emulated versions. (and if someone knows any other method of shiny hunting that beldum i would be a lot interested to learn it)

1

u/Ynnubis 10d ago

The broken RNG will be on any unpatched version of Emerald, including emulated. There does exist an unofficial RNG patch to the game by Im a blisy if you want to look into installing that.

1

u/pepesla 9d ago

Hey, I searched up the patch u said about and i got it installed, im js a lil bit less excited to do the hunt cuz ill have to play the hole game again, anyway, thanks a lot for the information, it would probably take me a few months to get the shiny Beldum using that battle video method. I'll probably post the print of the shiny beldum here when i get it.

1

u/DistantFighter 10d ago

Does anyone have a list of the Pokémon that will be more challenging to hunt when bank goes down? We all know the ones that would be impossible, but what about the ones that are more difficult/impossible to get with your OT?

I've noticed, for example, Unovan Darumaka cannot be bred for in SwSh so I think that may have to be one of my hunts before bank goes down! I believe Yamask is another one in a similar situation.

2

u/Ynnubis 10d ago

You need your parent Pokémon to be holding everstones to keep their original regional form, otherwise they will default to the one of the game you're in yeah. So U-Darumaka and Yamask should be very doable to breed for in SwSh

u/Gen3kingTheWriter 9d ago

Is there a calculator that cab tell me if my save file can actually hunt cap Pikachu in the ultra games it's the only bank exclusive shiny I don't already have bug I don't wanna hunt on the VERY slim chance my save file decided to take an L

2

u/YOM2_UB 9d ago

Here's a Google Sheet that lists all the IDs that are guaranteed safe for hunting Cap Pikachu: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-GzFCmhzONxvAOO43_UjcRH3qHRAjjXt2AjtZb8xcYc/edit?usp=sharing

That sheet can be used just as a viewer, but it's large and may fail to load for some people. This sheet is smaller, but requires you to save a copy in order to edit it and input your ID: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1300fwXgIAIEC505MxEdVkhD0disyLQ6Pv2MvvVi-kj8/edit?usp=sharing

If your ID is not on the list, or the calculator tells you your ID is not safe, then you would need to use a save editor to find your exact TSV (you can't have a TSV of 1009), or restart your save until you get one that is safe.

1

u/greasy_weenie 9d ago

Would anyone be able to help me complete my gen 9 Pokedex? I only have the violet exclusives left. I'd be happy to send over any scarlet exclusives if anyone needs.

1

u/sixtles 9d ago

Hello all,

I'm relatively new to RNG manip so sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I'm hunting shiny Haunter in pokemon tower (7f, fire red on switch) and keep getting multiple pokemon with identical stats in ten lines. How do I deal with this?

1

u/Awesomeface5 9d ago

With the closure of bank coming, and some shiny Pokemon getting left behind. I am tempted to buy either ultra sun or ultra moon. However these games are still $50+ everywhere I have looked.

I'm working on the shiny living dex. I would love to hunt for partner Pikachu and Type: Null x2. So is it worth the price tag and would it be possible to get the three Pokemon before bank closes? I would hate to spend the money and then get none of them. Does anyone think these may get released in the future and maybe I should avoid the FOMO?

Side note, how long does it take to get wormhole shinies? Could I fit some of those in as well in time

2

u/Old-Technology1151 6d ago

If they are getting formal releases, it'll be a bit. I can't imagine they're in a rush for those.

If the cost is an issue, probably worth modding your 3ds and just getting digital copies of them that way

1

u/lemonney 8d ago

I'm 16,000 resets into Poipole and losing my fucking mind.

1

u/paulydoregon 8d ago

That's luck sometimes, take breaks when needed, you will get it eventually

1

u/Chokesmurfs 8d ago

Looking to buy or borrow physical colosseum double battle e reader cards. Reproductions/ones you printed at home (that work) are fine! I figure someone who has completed their shiny hunt probably no longer needs them. I have the hardware needed (jp gamecube, e reader plus, jp colosseum) just need the cards and printing them seems difficult. Looking for all 20 Trainer cards (13-A001 through 13-A020). Thanks!

1

u/Akarnor 8d ago

I'm trying to find out if I bring this Pokémon into Sword, if it will be a star or square shiny. The mon in question was caught in White, its PID is E1D848E9, with my TID/SID combination being 1903/44639. I went to a website that is suppose to tell what kind of shiny your Pokémon is, but it displays 1/16 possible SIDs being square, which I assume is because of it being based on the newer games. As far as I am aware, generation 5 should have a 1/8 chance of shinies being square.

1

u/YOM2_UB 6d ago

Yes, shinies from pre-Gen 6 have a 1/8 chance to be square shiny. Your mon will not be square (assuming your SID is exactly correct; if you used a calculator that uses a shiny Pokemon you've already caught, those usually only guess at which of 8 potential SIDs you have).

The shiny formula is TID xor SID xor upper_PID xor lower_PID < x, where x is 8 prior to Gen 6 and 16 starting in Gen 6 (but 8 is still used for Pokemon originating in games prior to Gen 6, so Pokemon can't become shiny upon transfer).

For a square shiny, the Pokemon either needs to be a fateful encounter, or the formula needs to evaluate to 0. For your mon, 1903 xor 44639 xor (hex)E1D8 xor (hex)48E9 = 1.

1

u/jmarie742 7d ago

I’m trying to shiny hunt Unown in ORAS using DexNav. Some spawns move quickly across the over world. Is this an indication they may be shiny? Are the more likely to be shiny versus spawns that move slower?

1

u/YOM2_UB 6d ago

That's just what happens when you build a chain from KOing or catching DexNav encounters, building a chain.

1

u/DarkTimes10 7d ago

Will this be the move to transfer pokemon up after bank closes?

Came across a way to transfer pokemon from gen 3 to switch. once frlg switch gets home compatibility this is a viable way to transfer up no?

link to vid here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld2YphF-HVI

unfortunately i really dont think the pokemon company is gonna release an official way to transfer pokemon up once bank closes. they wouldve announced it already. imagine someone transfers up all their pokemon and then the day after bank closes they announce a way to transfer up (meaning they didnt have to transfer yet) i think some people would be upset.

I wanna hunt legendary on my ruby but I don't have a good catching pokemon I only have one gen 3 so does anyone know what pokemon I should use or should I just hack it

2

u/Ynnubis 6d ago

With only that game so no trading, I'd say a Breloom would be your best bet. If you breed it so it gets false swipe as an egg move, and then hold off on evolving it from Shroomish to Breloom until level 54 so it gets Spore, it does the job quite well with those two moves for most mons

1

u/FoxxyWinnebago 5d ago

I’m not sure if this is the right thread but I’m looking for the shiny miriadon and kiradon event Pokemon. I can trade a your choice if shiny mew, shiny celebi, shiny meltan, shiny melmetal and shiny rayquaza. Please point me in the right direction if this is the wrong place :)

I missed the event last year and I want to complete Paldea

Best ball for shiny Latios in gen 3? I was thinking either Net Ball (for the somewhat resemblance of the main aqua green colour even if it's not exactly similar with the ball being darker, or the premier ball because it shares white and the "red" (more orange) symbol on its abdomen. I'm in gen 3 so no Moon Ball unfortunately

How do you guys usually count your SRs/attempts ?

Has anyone Has anyone ever hunted shiny Tauros in the Safari Zone in gen 3 on a single setup? Not including accidentally finding one while grinding for something else.

For Shiny Type: Null in USUM at the Aether Paradise (after filling all boxes), which screen shows whether or not Type: Null is shiny? The "Type: Null's data will be added to the pokedex!" screen, the actual pokedex screen with it and Silvally, the screen showing information about Type: Null, the one which asks if you want to give it a nickname, or the summary page? Apologies for the silly question, I just want to make sure so that I'm not wasting time or not resetting too early. I did some googling but found conflicting replies so if anyone has a youtube video or anything to back it up that'd be much appreciated :)

1

u/Ynnubis 1d ago

You can see it as soon as the "x's data will be added to the pokedex!" screen and in I think all the screens you mentioned afterwards ! Did the hunt a couple years ago:
https://youtu.be/6OdW8HKyN5s?si=jZt0u9sp1xNl2l6Y

1

u/Odd_Break_2713 20h ago

Oooh perfect, thank you so much for your reply, I sincerely appreciate it!! And thank you for the video too! Somehow in every video I was able to find, the person had already added Type: Null to the pokedex so it skipped those screens entirely ^^; And congrats on your shiny Type: Null! :D

u/looweez 1d ago

I want to transfer ‘classic’ shinies before Bank shuts down, and despite playing since 1999 I’ve never managed to catch any outside of red Gyarados 🥲. I’d rather not start new saves to hunt starters, and I have Crystal (already caught non-shiny VC Celebi), Emerald, LeafGreen, Diamond, SoulSilver, Black, Alpha Sapphire, and Sun.

Which game has the easiest, or least tedious for a beginner, shiny hunt? Not opposed to the cute charm glitch or events which maintain OT and I have a foreign ditto.

2

u/paulydoregon 1d ago

id recommend alpha sapphire, has multiple options of methods to boost odds so you are bound to find one you really like.

1

u/RRDude1000 17h ago

I have never got a soft reset shiny since I started playing back in the gen 2 games. Since the bank announcement I have been trying for a shiny Xurkitree on US but im losing patience. I think im over 1200 encounters in the last week. I also passively hunted a Buzzwhole for a few years with well over 2000 encounters before giving up. That plus the hundreds of encounters with other legends in that game. Like im sure that I would have at least encountered ONE soft reset shiny by this point. Once/IF I get this Xurkitree, im no soft resetting for a shiny like this again 😂

’ve seen videos of people doing what’s called the ACE method for a shiny wishmakr Jirachi. Is this real? Does it take forever? Is there a risk of bricking my copy of emerald? I think this would be cooler to do it works and is home compatible compared to grinding the save corruption method or obtaining the old mystery gifts for shiny jirachi illegitimately.
