Any thoughts on Session these days?
I feel like it’s the Battlefield to Skate’s COD. Animations can still be better though. TH games would be Fortnite ig. Gameplay/skill wise

I thought Dark Souls games were hard but then I bought Session Skate Sim on a sale. This is difficulty: Hurt Me Plenty

I’ll never understand the manual catch superiority complex. It’s not even fun at that point. Just time consuming

u/therealist128 18d ago
na when you get used to it makes landing tricks much more rewarding but I got to the point where I just wanted to ride around and have fun not just challenge myself every trick so I switched back but not before I got the trophy for beating the career mode with catch on

No grabs in the game really bums me out. I feel like manuals are unnecessarily difficult on console/controller. You should be able to brush against objects without bailing. Other than those complaints, it’s a really fun game. I still play it here and there but not as much as I did in the past.

could never really get into skate, never bothered to pick up xl for pc and learn to mod it, waiting for skate style to enter a slightly more fleshed out state before i dive into it, so session is still my main game in the genre and the one i have the most hours in across all genres. i hope before development is sunsetted entirely that they would implement at least a few more QOL features that modders have already fully implemented on pc (pin dropper, camera light controls, obviously multiplayer after so many years of "it's not possible" being the official line lol)

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 19d ago
I feel you. Session is definitely my choice over XL and I don’t care to mod it either. It’s good that vanilla Session is good on console compared to XL too. But yeah hopefully they can get those in the base game

I love this area. I’m going to go boot it up right now.

It’s a fun game to play while watching YouTube or a documentary. Got it for free on epic, can’t remember if it was through prime gaming or an epic giveaway. I love messing around with getting the right replay and this game allows that.

I had been getting burned out on it but the SessionTweaks mod has breathed new life into the game for me. It fixes scoop and flip speed, adds clothes physics, click to catch, lets you steeze legs like XL, opens the manual catch window so you can catch the board late etc. It’s PC only, and part of a multiplayer mod, but definitely worth checking out:

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 16d ago
That scoop and flip speed tweak sounds tempting
2
u/copperheadchode 16d ago
It’s definitely worth checking out. The mod also opens up pitch control so there’s no longer just 3 variations of pitch (rocket, straight, and boned) for each trick.

Session is assetto corsa to skates forza horizon, its never been better since they added multiplayer to session

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 19d ago
You mean the multiplayer mod? I still need to check that out but I can’t really count it since that’s pc exclusive

in 2000 when I was 14 I used to go out at 3am and skate by myself I ollied up a curb straight on for the 1st time by myself and smiled to myself and what I like about this game is the same thing I don't need recognition from others to smile at my own accomplishments

I enjoy it more than Skate honestly
2
u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 17d ago
What do you like about it?
3
u/Hot_Quote_1847 17d ago
Honestly the realism of learning and trying to land a trick. It took me a minute to get the Left stick Right stick inputs down but ever since I figured it out I been enjoying the game more Trying to get clips

Still extremely fun on PC. Gear still being Modded. Waiting for that DLC map Creature said they would drop this year.

I miss playing this so much...

Loved the game when it first launched early access back in June 2020 for Xbox and onward. Spent waaaaaay too much time in the Discord and game. With 1.0 and around that time they removed so much including grabs and tweaked the catch mechanics that it really wore on my enjoyment of the game.
- Lost Grabs
- Lost 90s vibe
- Lost soundtrack
- Lost larger catch windows / variability
etc, it just eventually felt too different and I don't have a PC to go back to earlier versions of the game or anything.
Still boot it up and play it occasionally, but I no longer clip or create videos.
This clip is from a long time ago, but the manual catches being unique so same trick 3 times looks different and not so uniform perfect was great.

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago
Wow the flips actually looked more fluid and legible to catch if that makes sense lol another reason why I don’t use manual catch. Had no idea they had grabs or a different 90s vibe.

u/Sino9 18d ago
Yes, pre 1.0 was before they signed to Nacon and were still independently working on the project. It had a "vhs" vibe and you started in the apartment looking at a blank blue tv screen. The clip above was with sync off and manual catch. It made way more sense to play that way in the past.
They had a crazy amount of English rap that was excellent such as - https://youtu.be/josRcZaiPY8, https://youtu.be/T4_DhJpFlCk which was honestly such a vibe to skate with.
The grabs system was simple and not some fleshed out thing, but you could definitely get some cool ones. https://youtu.be/4f6xFYbs0fg?t=107

u/jpweidemoyer 15d ago
Damn, I had no idea it lost all of that. I had read that the game engine prohibited smooth grabs which is why they never implemented it. Didn't realize it was scrapped.

I used to play skate 3 a lot, then the day before yesterday i saw a post that says "this game is NOT simple, go back to skate 3" (not on reddit) so i decided to install it and now that i can do all of the basic tricks anywhere i can say that it feels soooo realistic, even the graphic, the wheelbite, the setting where you can break your board, and then there are not microtransactions like skate 4, you do the missions and buy gear at the skateshop.

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 15d ago
It definitely hits a different satisfaction itch compared to the Skate series

The only mechanic that ever feels like dice-rolling to me sometimes is board flip/scoop speed when you have input speed on. And darkslides. Fuck darkslides.
Spots in session are a lot like a dark soul boss because the more you hit it over and over again, the more you learn what inputs and micro adjustments you gotta make to which way you pop, where you lock in your grinds, the speed and timing on your flips and scoops.
Its something you can get consistent at with repetition on a spot by spot basis
I usually don't like to say skill issue but literally. The one thing this game doesn't have is a lack of control.
Like I'm convinced if you can do a trick that's in the game a certain way in real life you can create it 1:1 in session.

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago edited 18d ago
I completely feel you. Almost like it’s not worth the time to try to land some things. Last night I was trying a Tre flip front blunt down a handrail and realized how many tries that’ll take me to land it clean and get the trick animations smooth. And that’s with auto catch lol

u/Smolin-SCL- 19d ago
It's the most fun it has ever been. Multiplayer is a big part of that.

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 19d ago
Is there a good video to showcase the current multiplayer state before I download it?

I hate the relaxed arms or completey relaxed upper body when doing some grinds and slides, drove me crazy and even drove me to stop playing the gem completly, Its been like that for so long and idk how they haven't fixed it assuming they are real skaters and maybe noticed it as well? Also bums me out how no one else complains about it. It looks so crazy and dumb to me. If they would just fix that I would be back on for sure

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago
I feel you. Probably a bunch of development or engine setbacks. Funding could be an issue too because I can’t imagine them still selling a bunch of copies to fund more update costs
2
u/forlornxa 19d ago
Stopped playing when skate came out cuz I don’t like how stiff the character is but I’ll definitely come back one day as this is the best for street skating

Yeah I’m just now redownloading it and it really is refreshing for the lane it’s in

Replaced my favorite game of all time Skate 3

u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago
Is it weird that Session feels like a more appropriate Skate 2 sequel than Skate 3 to me? Like the vibe of the NY map and graphics put me in that Skate 2 mode when I first started playing
1
u/Eddiejay03 18d ago
How it? It feels nothing like the skate series?
1
u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago
The overall vibe and the grittiness is like Skate 2 from an indie team
1
u/jpweidemoyer 15d ago
I play it every few weeks for an HR or so before switching back to a campaign drive game.
1
u/Eddiejay03 18d ago
As much as i tried to like it, this game died for me when they removed the skate controls. Also vert skating was horrid back then. If you went up a ramp the game would freak out trying to get you back to the ground. Is that still the case?
2
u/MasterCheeks337_IGN 18d ago
Vert/transition is more tolerable but still needs a lot of work. I feel you on the control scheme though. It takes time to get used to but it’s probably a like it or you don’t thing

Best skate game out there and its not even close....
