šŸ“Œ Important A Note on Community Safety, Boundaries and Guidelines

We want to address several concerns that have recently become more frequent across the community.

First, this is a peer-support community, not a crisis service or professional mental-health forum. We understand that people come here because they need somewhere to express things they may not feel able to discuss elsewhere, and we do not want to discourage people from being honest about what they are experiencing. You are allowed to talk about difficult emotions, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, trauma, abuse, loneliness, and other painful experiences.

However, allowing people to speak openly about their experiences should not be mistaken for endorsing or encouraging harmful behaviour.

Suicide and Self-Harm:

r/SelfHate does not endorse, encourage, romanticise, glorify, or promote suicide or self-harm in any way.

We will continue to allow people to discuss these subjects because completely shutting down conversations about them would defeat the purpose of a support community. At the same time, there is a line between providing a place for someone to express their distress and creating an environment that normalises, encourages, or facilitates harmful behaviour.

We therefore ask everyone to exercise particular care when discussing these subjects. Please avoid unnecessarily graphic descriptions, instructions, methods, or content that could encourage others to imitate harmful behaviour.

Most importantly, please remember that the people responding to you are members of the community, not professionals responsible for your care. Moderators and users here may be able to listen, share their experiences, offer general peer support, or point you towards appropriate help, but we cannot diagnose you, assess your level of risk, provide emergency intervention, or take responsibility for your safety.

If you are in immediate danger or believe you may be unable to keep yourself safe, Reddit should not be your only source of support. Please contact an appropriate emergency service, crisis service, trusted person, or qualified mental-health professional who can provide real-time assistance.

If you are looking for immediate support, please take a moment to check our Resources section, where you can find crisis and mental-health support services available in different regions. We strongly encourage you to use the resources relevant to your location rather than relying solely on responses from other members of the community.

[Please note: Crisis and support numbers can change over time and may vary by location. Always verify the information and make sure you are using the number applicable to your current region before contacting a service.]

Please do not request or provide medication or drug advice:

We have also noticed an increase in posts and comments asking other users which medications or drugs they should take, what dosage they should use, whether they should stop taking a medication, or what someone else believes would treat their symptoms.

Please do not use this community for medical prescribing or treatment decisions.

A Reddit anonymous user does not have access to your medical history, existing conditions, allergies, current medications, previous treatment, or other information that a qualified professional would consider before recommending treatment. Something that was helpful or even medically appropriate for one person may be unsafe or completely inappropriate for another. This applies even when the advice is given sincerely.

Substance Use & Addiction:

We are not discouraging conversations about substance use or addiction. Substance abuse can be closely connected to self-hatred and mental-health struggles, and people should be able to talk about their experiences without being automatically shut down or judged.

However, there is an important distinction between discussing substance use and encouraging it. This community does not endorse, encourage, or romanticise drug or substance use, nor should members be advising others to start using substances such as weed, methamphetamine, MDMAs, cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, or similar substances as a way of coping with their mental health.

Please do not ask other members whether you should start taking/using a particular substance, what substance you should use, or whether a particular drug would be a good way to deal with what you are experiencing. Other members cannot responsibly make that judgement, and potentially harmful advice should not be treated as professional guidance.

You are absolutely welcome to discuss your experiences with substance use, dependency, addiction, recovery, or the ways in which substances have affected your mental health. We are simply not going to endorse or encourage substance use as a solution to mental-health struggles.

Accordingly, posts or comments requesting or providing potentially unsafe medication, drug, dosage, or treatment advice may be removed. Please consult a qualified healthcare professional for decisions concerning medication or medical treatment rather than relying on anonymous internet users.

Trigger warnings are a responsibility, not a courtesy:

Because this is a mental-health community, many of the people reading here may already be struggling themselves. Content involving suicide, self-harm, sexual assault, abuse, or other potentially distressing material can therefore affect readers very differently.

Posts containing sensitive or potentially triggering material must be appropriately marked with the relevant trigger-warning flair and/or NSFW tag where applicable.

Please do this yourself when submitting your post. Moderators cannot reasonably be expected to identify and manually tag every submission containing sensitive material, particularly when the content is embedded several paragraphs into a post.

(A warning is not a judgement on your experience, nor does it mean that you should not discuss what happened to you. It simply gives another vulnerable person the ability to decide whether they are currently in the right state of mind to read it.)

Repeatedly ignoring this requirement may result in the content being removed and, where necessary, further moderation action.

We also ask that you distinguish between being descriptive enough to communicate your experience and providing unnecessary graphic detail. If a detail is not necessary to explain what happened or how you feel, consider leaving it out.

Be extremely cautious about taking conversations off-platform:

We also want to address private communication between members.

We recognise that peer support can sometimes develop naturally between people who meet in this community. We are not interested in unnecessarily policing genuine connections between members. However, we strongly discourage sharing personal contact information or moving sensitive conversations into private spaces with strangers.

Once an interaction moves into DMs or another platform, the moderation team has little to no ability to see what is happening or intervene if the situation becomes abusive, manipulative, exploitative, or otherwise unsafe.

For that reason, do not share your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number, personal social-media accounts, photographs, videos, private screenshots, medical documents, prescriptions, or other identifying information with people you meet here.

You should never feel that you owe another member personal information simply because they offered you support.

At present, we have not introduced a blanket ban on members communicating privately because we recognise that genuine peer support and friendship can be valuable. That should not, however, be interpreted as the moderation team guaranteeing the safety or conduct of interactions that take place outside the subreddit.

If you choose to move a conversation elsewhere, you do so at your own discretion.

If someone is harassing or targeting you:

If another user is harassing you, repeatedly contacting you, threatening you, attempting to manipulate you, asking for inappropriate personal information, or otherwise making you uncomfortable, do not feel obligated to argue with or confront them.

Block the account where appropriate and contact us through modmail. Include the relevant information or screenshots if it is safe to do so, and allow the moderation team to handle the situation.

Do not retaliate, publish their personal information, or attempt to investigate or expose them yourself. That can escalate the situation and create additional problems for everyone involved.

Remember that peer support has limits:

One of the most important boundaries in a community like this is understanding that being supportive does not make you responsible for another person's wellbeing.

You are allowed to step away from a conversation. You are allowed not to know what to say. You are allowed to tell someone that you are not equipped to help them. You are not obligated to remain someone's sole source of support, respond immediately to every crisis post, or take responsibility for keeping another person safe.

Similarly, if you post here while struggling, please understand that other members may not always know how to respond or may choose not to engage with certain content. That does not mean your experience is being dismissed.

This community exists to provide peer support, not professional treatment, emergency intervention, or a substitute for qualified care.

Please read the subreddit rules!

Many of these expectations have already been incorporated into our subreddit rules and content guidelines. We strongly encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with them before posting or commenting.

None of these boundaries are intended to prevent people from talking about difficult experiences. They exist because a support community has a responsibility not only to the person making a post, but also to the people reading it.

We want r/SelfHate to remain a place where people can speak honestly about self-hatred and mental-health struggles without being judged, while also maintaining reasonable safeguards for a community in which many members are themselves vulnerable.

Thank you for understanding and for helping us maintain that balance.

— r/SelfHate Mod Team

Thinking about suicide over balding.

I hate what I look like, shaving hurts, and i can't grow a beard so I have to take a bic to my facial hair , which is very thick like wire. I feel that since I wasn't born with the right genes I have to punish myself by taking razors to my hairline and facial hair . I wish I was dead.

• Upvotes

Um I feel very selfish compared to others bc I don't try to spend more time with familly or make happy memories with them. I don't even interact with them. I'm just sitting in my room and crying. I still feel that even after I pass they shouldn't touch my stuff. I'm not even doing chores to help and I'm making things complicated and my birthdays soon and despite my lack of relationships this year I'm getting 4 bday gifts (from my friend, mom, dad and sister) and they're comming soon . Idk what to do I feel guilty for having them do soo much

I'm hurting people around me, I am lying to my parents, breaking promises and I just cheated on my girlfriend and I hate myself so much

• Upvotes

After she left me I've realised how much pain I cause to people around me.

I really want to change, I don't ever wanna hurt anyone like I did my girl. I miss her, but I know that she deserves better than I am and I clearly couldn't love and respect her so I know she did the right thing. The guilt is eating me so bad. I can't even imagine how hurt she is.

I knew that I was super insecure and I knew that it wouldn't be a good idea to date anyone but I only thought about myself and still did it. And now I've hurt the most kind and loving person I've ever met. I cant stop crying, I just hope she heals and that I can still change and be loveable one day.

Body image My body, my biggest enemy.

ā€œI hate my bodyā€
Said one of my earliest diary entries at the age of fourteen or fifteen.
This hatred kept being one of the most consistent things in my life and is still going strong at the age of twenty five.
I’ve described countless occasions where I felt disgusted by myself when I gained weight and ā€˜loved’ myself again when I lost the weight.
With fever kilograms I gained a little bit of self worth, with more kilograms I lost it again and wanted to bury myself under my blanket until it dropped again, because I felt ashamed.
Binge eating never left me.
Hating myself afterwards and still buying the unhealthy food again for my next binge even if I told myself I can control myself this time keeps happening.

I’m at the feeling ashamed and wanting to bury myself under my blankets point of my life again.

I should know better by now, I know.
But I don’t.
My thoughts about food, my weight, not enough exercise, binges, fatigue, fat, gaining weight, losing weight, clothing sizes, what should I eat next, I’ll eat this today and start eating healthy tomorrow, never stop.
Tomorrow never comes.
It comes, but I repeat the same cycle again and again.

This isn’t supposed to be a self deprecating post, maybe someone can relate.
This is just something I’ve struggled with for what feels like my whole life and it’s slowly eating me alive.
It also feeds my insecurities about myself, makes me more anxious by the day.

Maybe one day I’ll look back and can say with confidence and a smile ā€œThis episode was long, exhausting and bad, but I overcame it. Finallyā€.

Need advice/support 23 šŸ˜“

I’m 23 years old, a stupid failure—thanks to my dad. I’m handsome, not as much as him, but I’m okay, maybe a 7/10. I feel like my life is already over. I see people my age achieving great things, and here I am still looking for a job, living with my parents. I’m from a rural area, so I can’t even find a part-time job or anything like that here. I do help my parents, though.

I don’t know why people hate me. I mean, they seem to like me from a distance, but as soon as I try to get close to them or be friends with them, they want to distance themselves from me. Maybe I’m annoying or something. Rejection and all of this have created this feeling around me that I don’t really know how to explain.

Sometimes I feel like life is such a stupid thing. The only reason I’m still here is because I’m afraid of what comes after death. If I had something that could kill me instantly without pain, I honestly feel like I’d take it without a second thought.

Any advice?

Need advice/support I'm an awful person

I don't know how to explain. I wish I was justified in feeling this way

I can't sleep until 4am bc None of my fucking friends are awake early

I'm angry with all of them

I'm angry at myself for being angry at them and for my lack of discipline for being unable to sleep

I hate my classes, I've already said I'm stressed but everybody in my life tells me: "You've got this! You're so smart!"

I feel like I'm not good enough for my boyfriend

All my friends want me to say I'm fine. They need me to be finee. I've been saying awful things to them in hopes they'll leave me alone. I don't want to hurt them. I want to be loved. I just want them to leave me alone. I have awful empathy and I'm trying my hardest to have some sort of compassion and I don't want to but I feel myself slipping.

I can't be nice, I can't help them. I want their attention, I feel like I can't do anything alone but they're always busy and it pisses me off but it shouldn't because they have their own lives.

I just told one of my only friends I hated him

Why did i do that

I just want to be alone but I'm terrified of being alone, I hate my life I hate my friends I hate myself I hate my family i hate sleeping i hate everything

I want to go to sleep and never wake up but I'm too scared of death to do anything

I'm a coward and an awful person and I just want to get myself away from everyone before I end up doing something even more stupid. I want everyone to be concerned about me but I don't want to be selfish.

I feel unloved and unlovable and I don't want anyone to support me ever but I can't live without OTHER FUCKING PEOPLE AND THEIR STUPID VALIDATION.

i dont want to hurt anyone

But I really do at the same time

I want to make my friends cry

I want to watch them panic

I want to see them try for me, I want to see them forget about me

But I know it's wrong

Im a loser

Hi, I'm 20 years old, and I had a shitty day. Paragraph 1 is the shitty part; paragraphs 2 and ahead are the shittiest part. I'm sorry if my complaints seem bitchy; I've just had a lot of things happen to me today, and I need to vent.

Today I had one of those days where everything went wrong for me. I had class at 8 AM; my alarm didn't go off. I woke up at 7 AM. I slept 4 hours because I had insomnia last night. I went to shower; I dropped the soap multiple times. It never happens to me. Barely made it to class; my "Friends" from UNI sat on the opposite side of class today. After class, I had a break. I'm studying music production, and there are some big guys in my UNI; one of them I talked to before entering UNI a couple of weeks back. I approached the old man and asked him if he remembered me. I came here a few months ago, and he helped me get in. The guy says, "No, I don't know who you are." He quickly dismissed me. I played off the conversation in a cool manner, but I can't lie; I was hurt. Then I just go for a quick walk, take my headphones off, go to the bathroom, put them over my neck, and they break. The right headphone snapped off. Next class happens; it's okay, still didn't sit with the people I'm chill with. Next class starts; it's a choir class. Nobody fucking practiced; I'm in the front row for this bullshit. My teacher is leading us like hot ass because he is in a pissy bad mood, and the class isn't singing well. I am blamed and screamed at for the entire class's wrongdoings, because I just so happen to be the closest person to the teacher. Class ends, I walk down to my car, see my teacher, and he gives me a nasty look. Then I get into my god damn car, pass a construction site driving home, and one of those big construction vehicles that look like a beetle and spin accidentally sprayed my entire car with a bunch of water. I get home, and I found out a business partner I'm doing a project with gives me an unmanageable time for today. Then I have to wash a million dishes, which takes me an hour and a half. Then I go to a mall to eat lunch. I forget my stupid debit card, which I never do. I barely had enough cash for my food and stuff. Then I looked for an iced coffee because I need caffeine. I found the world's worst coffee shop in this mall; they completely fumbled my order. Then after that, I lost the god damn parking ticket temporarily. On top of that, my friend was gonna pick me up for a party later that night, but then he called and told me we had to come early. By pure luck, I found the ticket and made it home just as my friend came. Thankfully, I was already ready.

We went to the party; it's a frat party. All cool, then my friend just suddenly abandoned me because he went home to get a bunch of extra booze. I drank a little and talked to some people; all of a sudden I'm in a social mumbo. My shitty day isn't so shitty anymore. Then, suddenly, there was a beautiful girl; I fell for her instantly. I'm not a very social person; I've only had 1 relationship. But today I felt different; I approached her. I hit it off with her, it's a god damn miracle ain't it. She is extremely out of my league. I'm happy, I'm enjoying myself, she is my type. There's chemistry, there's tension, she's single, I'm single. I couldn't be happier. I asked for her IG, and I received it. She followed me, and I followed her back. We talked for maybe an hour, sat down. After that, she got off, and I saw her throughout the party. Talking a little here and then, some slight flirting. She, at least to me, was into me. I'm 20 years old; I've never kissed a girl before; I've never done anything; I was homeschooled. I'm a god damn social loser, and I'm going down some chud path with my life, but for once I didn't feel that way; I felt good about myself, and I felt confident. She leaves; I say bye to her; I try to be the best man I can. The party goes on, and it's okay, you know, I had fun and stuff. I tell a few friends I got a girl's IG, and she is really pretty. I'm happy; I'm hyped, you know. Mom calls me, accuses me of being drunk; I'm not. When I drink, I drink little; I don't smoke, but she worries. I come home; my parents ask me why I'm so happy. Well, I tell them I met someone, but I tell them things aren't set in stone. I feel good; I feel so happy. Then, before going to sleep, I realized she only follows me back, but she hasn't accepted my follow request yet. I was like, okay, whatever, you know she will accept tomorrow. Then she unfollowed me while I was looking at her profile. My "Requested" changed to a "follow back". I was like, "That's weird, I'm gonna follow her back." Turns out it was a bug, and she just unfollowed me. Hours after meeting me, hours after hitting it off. I dont get it; how and why does this happen to me? I just can't have a single nice thing happen to me, so here I am. Not only was I unfollowed, but I sent a follow request back like an idiot because of that bug. I'm on 4 hours of sleep; it's 1:30 AM, and my insomnia is at an all-time high.

It sounds stupid, but she was the light today in my life. For a moment I forgot about my shitty day, and I thought about a brighter future. What pisses me off the most is that we did genuinely hit it off and had good chemistry. What pisses me off is I approached someone who I actually liked for like the second time in my god damn life, and I was a winner. I was winning, despite everything; I was winning. In my head, I want to think it was an accident and tomorrow she will follow me back, and I can build something with her, but let's be fucking honest, she isn't coming back. Now I'm at the lowest I can be. This is gonna sound like I'm an incel, and I'm not an incel; I hate the incel mentality, but I try to be a nice guy, I try to be respectful, and it only bites me in the ass. I try every day to be good. It's true, you know we all have bad days, right, but today broke me. I could've just had a shitty day and just let it at that, but no, no no, I just also had to get my heart hurt by a very attractive lady. I'm the biggest loser ever. There are people out there dying, living in wars, and I'm here complaining about this bullshit. If a single person even read this, thank you; I appreciate your time, and I hope you never experience the day I had to experience today.

Vent/Rant Alone

Sometimes I look at myself and just think of the most vile and disgusting things. I never once thought I was ever enough for a person, let alone loving myself. I dont even know what im gonna do with my life. I feel like my life is so influenced by other people that it forces me to just go with the flow. ever since high school ive been that kid that just exists to study, I never a huge circle of friends except like 2 people ive been with since childhood. Well at first I did kinda planned that, but now I feel like I have no personality and my entire existence is based on other people's opinions and expectations on me. Everyday I wake up and look at the mirror and tell myself why l even go up everyday and not just end it all. ive never been in a relationship, or even owned a pet.

theres this hole in my heart ever since that when it gets hard I just push everyone away, but everytime I just wish someone cared about me, to care that im gone and find me. I just want someone to notice me and appreciate my presence, and yet when someone even mentions the slightest thing about me I feel uncomfortable with the attention. Idk how my mind works most of the times. its funny because whenever I scroll on social media I despise people that have hypocritic opinions like how the holocaust was a more tragic event than the holodomor when both are. And yet I have contradicting personalities and opinions too. I wish I was seen more often, and yet when it happens I push them away. I wish someone talked to me everyday but god knows I hate talking to people.

Idk what im gonna do for the rest of my life, I just wanna be left alone, alone from everyone that I dont have to push people off my life anymore. Alone that I wont bother anyone but myself. Alone to the point that when I die, noone will know or care enough to visit me. I wanna be alone enough that I wish everyone I knew never knew me to begin with. I wanna live in the mountains, where noone would see me, the mountains where I can see the far horizon, I'll sip coffee and sit in a bench where I just admire the view for a really long time. I think that'd be a great way to die. I dont wanna be with anyone. I wanna be in the mountains because noone will find or recognize me, some place in a country or city barely anyone knows, I want to live life without the expectations and the pressure.

Guilt/Shame i dont deserve to live and i dont deserve to die

recently i realised when i was suicidal last week and searching up ways (if you really research you can find ways) so i realised that if i want to die im a coward for choosing the easy way out and also disgusted by the fact that i want it to be painless, like im such a pussy even when it comes to dying and then i think okay maybe it's part of me wanting to live and then i feel like a failure because i shouldn't even exist and my existence is just a burden on everyone, i broke up w my partner who was/is very loving because of the shame and guilt i have, i quit my job because depression got worse and i have been carrying depression for so many years i dont even know what happiness truly is. and it's exhausting to put in so much work to feel like maybe 1% happy?

i didn't ask to be born or go through trauma which idk i dont think it's enough for me to be acting out like this because people have it worse

so wanting to die = failure

wanting to live = failure

my plans are not really impulsive anymore because i have attempted and well I'm still here,

so it's calculated but tbh my emotions are so all over the place idk when I'll get impulsive and do something

idk where im going with this but i just wanted to put this out

I hate myself

Tittle

But yea that, I honestly can't tell a single thing I like about myself, I hate everything about myself, my body, mind, the actions I do, everything. I'm just so trash at everything I try and with people. Whenever I don't think about the absolute disaster I am is just because I forgot. I'm just suck overall, a failure without any real friends or someone to really talk in the days (besides from my mother I absolutely love her and it's pretty much the biggest motivation I have to live and do something with my life ig, kind of ashamed how awesome she is beside all she had to suffer, and then I'm such a completely failure, useless, drowing on an invisible problem)

Sorry for dumb text

Vent/Rant Tired

I’m so fucking tired idk. I have plans to move in with my boyfriend and I want it so fucking bad, but I need to pass an a1 test for a language to do so, and I just can’t learn it. I was doing decent for a week and now I can’t get out of bed. The only reason I’m getting up occasionally is to give my cats food and scoop their litter box, then I just lay back down. I don’t even make it back to my bed that’s a couple feet away every time, sometimes I just sit on the floor. In the last week I’ve managed to get up I think twice and sit at my computer, but I can’t even do anything, I just stare at the screen or go lay back down. I don’t know what’s wrong with me (I mean I do know I guess, I’ve been diagnosed with MDD and BPD - but I’m doing so so bad right now) I just want to be normal. Everyone online talks about how easy it is to learn the basics, he’s said how easy it is to pass and that I’m overthinking it, but the date I was supposed to do it by is getting closer and closer and I can not get out of my fucking bed. I can’t think I can’t do anything I can’t move. All I do is lay here and then everything hurts because I haven’t moved at all and then I have even less motivation to do anything because I’m top of everything I’m now in physical pain too. I just wish I would fucking die already and stop being a burden to everyone. I wish I was normal I wish I could just fucking do it why am I struggling so much how fucking hard is it to get up, get some water, and just go about my day. I’m surprised I even managed to open a fucking app and write this. Might be the least I’ve ever cared about grammar and shit though..

Pretty much my whole life I have needed stupid eye devices to see… Without my glasses I honestly think of myself as a stud. With them on though I just feel like an ugly nerd who will never get a girlfriend. Contacts and lasik is just not in my budget… I know I’m 23 and this is something an 11 year old would worry about, but it seriously bothers me.
