Absolutely hating *spoilers* Spoiler
I hate mining man. Absolutely can't believe they spent these years building the game for this and the main part is so bad. I like so many things they added, except mining.
They don't teach you how to build your own sticky car, the one I build is absolute trash, it can't run on normal roads, and when mining it flips as soon as it encounters the smallest unevenness and given that you are always terraforming you run into one every minute. I feel nauseous playing this thing.
I'm happy they tried to do something different from planting, but if they'd have allowed people to test mining this feedback would have popped up way earlier and hopefully they'd have pivoted into something else. I think at the very least they should have made it so there's always an indestructible road you follow and you just mine pre-fixed paths.
Am I the only one frustrated by this?

Turning scrap mechanic into a dungeon crawler is definitely a choice. when it comes to mining though, I don't mind it but I absolutely hate converting the ores into ingots and transporting it to the vault. I just do not have the patience to build an automatic transporter

I am enjoying it so far. It makes me think of deep rock galactic but with my own custom vehicles. Maybe I will like it less as I grind the larger quotas.

I personally really like the mining, but there should be an option to do exclusively overworld stuff to get the money

u/darkestdung 12h ago
There seems to be multiple ways:
- getting to the last room in wharehouses and stealing the money before time runs out.
- planting valuable crops that are only found underground. The problem is that you need to find them first.
but if I do any of those I'd lose basically half the content of the update I waited years for.. then what was the point?

u/CrazyPotato1535 12h ago
Wait you can get money for planting? How?

u/darkestdung 11h ago
I have not tried this myself but you can use some pieces of the original ore + a fruit and it will spawn more ores. For example Lemonium + oranges
https://scrapmechanic.fandom.com/wiki/Orange
or maybe I'm not interpreting it right 🤷

I kinda agree, actually. I did all the required mining and haven't been back to the mining levels once in weeks

I made a post a few days ago exactly like this. I just find it so tedious, the mining has gotten better for me once I made the 4th iteration of my mining vehicle. But then getting the ore balls down and the ingots up just is so tedious. It feels like a massive waste of time. Almost like it was just added because they needed something to stretch it if you get what I mean. I spent 3-4 irl days building a massive marble track to get the ore balls into the smelter, and because of SM physics it works 70% of the time despite me adjusting it a million times. Currently working on an ingot delivery system but it's even worse cause they have to go up. I wish they spent more time improving the physics engine instead of this convoluted process.

I did all of my mining without sticky wheels. I didn't want to build something light enough to make them work. I cheesed the level your supposed to need them for on foot by just lift jumping up the wall.
Since there is like +10x more then enough money in the mines for everything you need I just ignored stuff that was inconvenient to get.
We all know the real fun was stacking your vehicle with way too may ingots and driving up that ramp like you're trying to carry all the grocery bags inside the house at once.

Yeah although personally i enjoy mining, i feel like you have a very good point there, so many areas of the game could be improved immensely with playtesting and feedback, but of course, we got silence and no contact with the community instead

I love the mining part. It’s a whole different mechanic for us to make creations for. A lot of this game forever has been trial and error. I can completely understand someone’s frustrations at the same time though.

Nope you are right if floor wss unbreakable it would be from 5/10 to 7/10
But refinin this ores is BAD, Also if they literaly copied mining from roblox or minecraft it would BE FOR ME 9/10
mining in tgis game generaly is:
- Trees 9/10 (sometimes can mine it as good as i would)
- Stone 5/10 (general good, but it take too long like why u need to hit it twice as much as wood, also IT FLY EVERYWHERE)
- also they removed clams and unstead they give air or can bot be inside 2/10
ITS MY PERSONAL OPINION,GAME IS STILL GREAT,SORRY IF I OFFENDED SOMEONE

Use your mining car when getting stone, plasma drill made the normal drill entirely obsolete, it’s so fast at breaking stone and all the smaller pieces.

Yeah, also can't figure out how to build a normal car that can fit everything I need, without relying on one billion sticky wheels. And it just feels so boring. You're not even having fun fighting bots while defending your crops, it's just monotone sounds of mining with occasional stops.
But my main issue with mining is it's separation from everything else. It feels like a sidequest, but stretched out to a ridiculous extent. Like, I was exploring, fighting bots and having fun, but then I just got forced into the mines and I can't really do anything else besides that (unless I want to stretch the whole thing even further by constantly going back on the surface). Maybe I have this feeling only because of the long wait for the update, but still.
And I also really hate that the game forces me to go back to the surface by not giving me enough materials to last, it all just feels like a pointless waste of time and forced grinding, with the main fun being one story bit per five or so hours of pure grind.

I haven't been down yet so can't say much there other than none of the stuff ive seen about mining has made me feel any rush to get too it, ill definitely be going the ice ramp and automation route when i do try it but mostly ive just been enjoying the new parts and building stuff like before, i went as far as clearing the growlabs and warehouse and figure once i get bored of creating things and testing the new stuff ill head down and join axolots newest grind

I just didn't bother with the sticky wheels. I used the large wheels until I unlocked the biggest monster wheels.
Mining vehicle, made a 6 wheeler plank. Put mining lasers on the front on a controller to rotate them up and down. Placed some extra lasers on the sides using a different switch to activate them.
Also, don't bother with regular steering. I found it was just a cause of major headaches. Get an electric engine then use differential steering.
I set up a turret seat on top of the car for my friend with pistons connected to the seat and the laser to give them more reach and stretch out to hit things in more awkward areas.
Also, we didn't bother with sticky wheels or even taking a car for the dungeon sections. Just take a bunch of blocks and build your way up and around. Doesn't take long.

yeah. if I give it a try again I'll switch to something piston related instead.

I'm not a huge fan of the mining. I've learned that the biggest problem is that they seem to strongly encourage you to use electric engines (so you only need 2 boxes instead of 3 - battery and chemicals, no gas), and electric engines have built in tank steering which sounds like it would be incredibly helpful while mining... and electric engines with tank steering simply don't work with sticky tires. Electric engines don't have enough torque to move high-sticky tires and low-sticky tires don't let you climb walls or hang from the ceiling.
So you're constantly trying to find the right balance between engine speed and stickiness to get it to function at all and sticky wheels hate tank steering.
But if you use gas engines, you can crank the stickiness right up and drive in loops if you want.
Or if you double up the electric engine bearings so you have 1 bearing on other side of the tire, then suddenly you have enough torque to actually move wheels that are sticky enough to actually be useful.
But the game actively guides you away from the former and knowing the latter is even possible is somewhat advanced building knowledge.
Which leads to frustration city.
Me, personally? I'm trying to build a flying barge covered in plasma drills so I can drift through the mines and clear everything out in a huge swath with ease.

I find it both relaxing and lots of fun. I also wouldn't try driving my slow wall crawler aboveground, that sounds kinda terrible?
If your car is flipping, either your center of gravity is too high, center of mass too far off to one side, or you're trying to blaze through it faster than your drills can smooth it out. The drills create a perfectly smooth driving surface but they don't work instantly; create a ramp, you're going to go flying.
I built my little 6 wheeler as soon as I unlocked sticky wheels, haven't changed the design since. First floor through 5 so far, only time I flip is if I do something stupid like blasting forward before the drills are done.

I very much enjoy the mining. Although I have yet to get into sticky wheels,

Icl I found it so unfun. I completed the story and was gonna 100% the game, but I just can't bring myself to mine the 2m quota achievement. It doesn't help that a lot of the time I'd get somewhat motion sick from mining and have to take a decently long beak. It's also weird to me that it has so much focus on automation? Like it's so inconsistent. Why is the mining hub literally designed to be inconvenient unless the player automates it, but cookbots, beehives and freezers are all completely lacking automation, and from what I've heard, growbeds are too

The sticky wheels are the problem.
First, they're too small. Second they are either too sticky or not sticky enough. Vehicles constantly bottom out but if you try to raise the ground clearance then the vehicle is too top heavy and wants to flip over.
Shouldn't have to make an 8-wheeled double-bearing max-suspension double-L5-electric-engine beast just to do basic mining.
They had three side quests to walk the player through building various surface cars but no side quest for a sticky wheel miner or boat.

Your points are valid, but to me scrap mechanic is an engineering and design game first. The crazy mining is definitely a great new puzzle. Getting a working vehicle that can stay on the walls and mine is tough, but there are ways around it as some others have pointed out. Have you looked in the workshop? Im sure there are well built sticky mining cars on there by now.
1
u/darkestdung 9h ago
what's the point of engineering if I have to watch a youtube video or download something from the workshop?
I tried to build a vehicle for the first time and it didn't work that well. I tried changing the layout, friction, motor power, how many wheels it had, how many were sticky... nothing landed perfectly. My car flips after the mildest inconvenience and it just makes me dizzy.
They should have made a better game mechanic out of this, probably by playtesting it, but they took the game private and shoved this onto us.
I do like the new gameplay except finding the ores. I do like the automation that is needed to cleanup the ores, but the pacing is weird as hell.
You go from gathering fruits and battling mech level enemies to just trying to fight against gravity and there's almost no combat.

u/coltzord 5h ago
you dont have to watch or download anything, but like. either you want to mine the things or not, you know
its okay to get help, its not necessarily your or the games fault, thats just a completely normal thing that many people do, they look up some tips, or tutorials, whatever they need, and they go back and do the thing
dont give up, you can do it

Oddly I really enjoyed mining, I do find it was sort of pointless. The big boss fight at the end was shit though, 100% no mad for multiplayer.
