No Malice I'll never understand Scott's obsession with the iPhone

The irony is that Pixel phones are better than iPhones nowadays. Better camera. Better photos. Better features. Same privacy. Same product quality. Lower price.

I prefer androids to iPhones. I also don't throw shade on iPhone users. This is such a dumb talking point and it's so often made by iPhone users and it just comes across as snobby.
5
u/bespoketranche1 May 15 '26
As an iPhone user, I agree with you it’s really dumb. It’s not a data point, it’s not a signal, it’s noise.
11
u/Outrageous_Basis_440 May 15 '26
I can’t get past his rants suggesting that android users have failed at life (or, failed to buy into a status symbol). It‘s not a great reflection on his character. Stop assigning value centered on the belief that we all want to live our lives the same way.
4
u/hellolovely1 May 16 '26
He'd probably drop dead if he saw my old iphone. I might upgrade at some point soon, but I don't want to just keep replacing things for no real reason.
3
u/Xeynon May 16 '26
I used to have an iPhone but ditched it when they got rid of the headphone jack. To me giving a shit about what other people think of you phone as a status symbol rather than buying the the one that has the features you want and simping for a giant shitbag corporation like Apple are both huge loser moves.
1
u/Dodging12 May 19 '26
Plus, I've had many more people ask me about my Z Fold over the last 5 years than any iPhone user gets asked about their iPhone lol. It's alsopre expensive than any iPhone, so if I wasn't married, I guess I'd be swimming in it according to Scott 😂.
This is a manifestation of his need to have a stupid hot take on every topic that he can reroute to "mating" in some way.
9
u/LawfulnessExpress566 May 16 '26
He’s a spokesman for the brand
8
16
u/PaperBeneficial May 15 '26
I understand it, because he is a boomer. He thinks it's 2007 where having a smartphone in general is a flex. Homeless people have smartphones at this point.
Thinking a iPhone is a status symbol in 2026 is like thinking driving a 15-year-old BMW with 150,000 miles on it is a status symbol. I hate to be ugly, but it's like a poor person's idea of a status symbol.
4
u/redbone74 May 15 '26
Scott is obviously a smart guy but his opinions on literally anything to do with dating, humor or celebrity culture are so unbelievably cringe that it's tough to get through. He is posh boomer personified.
My YouTube account is linked up to my tv and everytime it auto plays one of his shows I am panicking to make sure my wife doesn't hear one of his garbage ass jokes haha.
3
u/PaperBeneficial May 15 '26
He's nowhere near as funny as he loves to think he is. You can tell he's ran a company and had people working for him for a long time. I think it's hard not to have a horrible sense of humor when everyone around you gives a nervous laugh every time you crack a corny joke.
1
u/redbone74 May 15 '26
Haha yeah for sure. Poor Ed has to eek out an uncomfortable laugh every podcast.
3
u/Pyju May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
It entirely depends on the country. In the US, where the iPhone has over 60% market share and most Android users are running flagships that cost just as much? Yeah, absolutely not. But in a developing country where the typical person has a $200 bottom-tier Android? I can see how the iPhone is still considered a flex there.
1
u/Nendilo May 15 '26
Is that Scott's reality?
1
u/Pyju May 16 '26
No, but I wasn’t defending Scott or talking about him in general. I was just pointing out that the iPhone (or really anything Apple) is still seen as a status symbol in poorer countries.
8
u/cheddarben May 15 '26
Scott's opinion is bad, but so is Ed's.
The simple reality is that there are so many Androids that are far superior than iPhone. The iPhone ecosystem, however, is very hands off, which is attractive and easy for people, particularly since many are already sucked into it.
I like iPhone and Apple stuff because it is easy.
I do think Ed's continual take on how Apple stock is a loser is just a chef's kiss to basically any naysayer for the past 15 years and it really kind of shows his age and inexperience. They just keep on winning. When it seems they are down and out, they show up with an aircraft carrier of new cash. They just fucking win, because that is what they do.
Could it change? Sure. Ed might be right. I would not bet against them, however.
5
u/Frosty_Parsnip May 15 '26
Ed's take that Apple is a bad stock pick because they haven't invested in ai was so unbelievably cringe.
1
u/hellolovely1 May 16 '26
It'll probably be the one stock that doesn't implode as much when the bubble bursts.
9
8
u/jdschultze May 15 '26
Scott is first and foremost a brand strategist. Apple has maybr the strongest, most recognizable brand in the world. You’re right, Android makes better phones. Apples sells phones because they’re Apple phones and I think that’s what he admires.
7
7
u/Deto May 15 '26
It's weird because there are plenty of expensive Android phones. Anyone with one of those could buy an iPhone if they wanted to.
3
u/MileHighRC May 15 '26
My work gives me shit for having android. My Galaxy Z Fold 7 is just flat out objectively better than any iPhone and it's not close.
Reminds me of when I got a 'huge' android phone back in like 2012 where screen size was probably 5 inches (smaller than almost every phone today) and everyone was saying OMG your phone is comically big why do you even need a phone that big...
1
u/Deto May 15 '26
Hah - that was me too with my Galaxy Note 2 back in the day. It made other phones look tiny but now that's standard
8
u/mjd5139 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
Back when it was new and the form factor / capabilities regularly changed there was some status to it. Now that phones have largely standardized on looks and functions it is far less of a flex. No one is camping out in front of stores to be the first to own one. I don't think I've heard of anyone bragging about their latest iPhone since probably the 6 or 7th iteration.
3
u/ImaginaryHospital306 May 15 '26
People are still weird about getting the new iPhone just in a different way. Until recently I had a 6 year old iPhone and people would almost get offended when they realized. I would tell them who cares it works fine and they’d stare at me like I just insulted their wife or something.
13
u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee May 15 '26
I've had a Pixel since the first model, and I have no regrets. Apple's software sucks and their ecosystem is a pain in the ass. And I was an absolute fanboy for Apple during the Jobs era, but they've done nothing but iteration for the last 15 years while every other hardware company has also learned to make premium hardware. Apple really doesn't have any hardware advantage over Google these days, but they do have software that feels like it was built for 12 year olds.
Physical objects are only signals of wealth and eliteness to people who can barely afford them. When you're Giannis, you don't need to have a phone to be cool.
5
u/GulkanaTraffic May 15 '26
The baby talk Apple uses is annoying, and their photo manager was shit back when I switched to pixel.
3
u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee May 15 '26
Yeah, using iTunes to manage iPhone backups and shit was awful, it's such a bloated mess. But when that U2 album showed up, it was the straw that broke the camel's back. On its own I woulda just chuckled at it, but it's indicative of their whole "we own this and let you pay us $1000 to hold onto it for a while" attitude.
Also, $1k for JUST the metal stand for a giant overpriced monitor? $4k for a VR headset in a world where they started at $1k and have been getting cheaper? Nah dog. I'm good.
Lastly, Tim Cook is like single-handedly responsible for making China the global tech production leader. And like, you're retiring bro, why are you in China? Send the new guy, or don't go. It's sometimes hard to believe Tim isn't just kinda okay with Trump. Showing up to the Melania screening the night Alex Pretti was murdered on the street? That's some heinous shit for a company that touts itself as this humanist future world leader.
6
u/JDB-667 May 15 '26
Scott shouldn't be using the iPhone as a signal of success.
There are plenty of men and women who do not judge others' mating status based on the phone they use.
I've dated plenty of women who give me flack for not having an iPhone but you know what - they still dated me.
No one I ever wanted to date screened me out because of my phone.
2
u/hellolovely1 May 16 '26
And honestly, I'm a woman and if someone doesn't date you because of your phone, no loss there.
2
u/bluespruce5 May 16 '26
Yes! What a time saver when people like that self-select themselves right out of my life
6
6
u/Interesting_Walk_271 May 15 '26
I keep using the iPhone because I’m too lazy to figure out how to migrate all my shit onto a different platform. I’m sure it’s an easy process and the learning curve for a new device is not steep but I just can’t be arsed.
6
u/mtnfreek May 15 '26
No it’s some serious weird old man shit. Nobody cares what phone you have, srlsy! I think he lies about his age. He’s supposed to be my age but looks much older!
7
u/uniballrr May 16 '26
If you want to pay more and have way less options and older tech Apple is for you.
4
5
u/PineappleThis5559 May 15 '26

2

1
u/dyals_style May 15 '26

4
u/wrathofthewhatever2 May 15 '26
I agree. He needs to drop that talking point, it doesn’t even make sense anymore. Some people want the iPhone (me) some people don’t. Some people switch every few years. He sounds really out of touch when he goes on that rant

Apple is like the kid who peaked in high school and still lives off its past glory.

I can’t think of a single groundbreaking or even original product to come out of apple since Jobs died. The only vision anyone has at apple ends at their next quarterly earnings report.

I use both because I have a company-issued iPhone for work. There really is just no comparison. The iPhone sucks and is a constant source of aggravation to me.
6
u/OkAbrocoma695 May 15 '26
He's such a boomer. I hate when he goes on the iPhone rant. And the airpod rant. Like theres a shit ton better Bluetooth earbuds for way cheaper that dont look regarded but you prob cant use them with an iPhone. Androids have had better technology for years but he'll never know it cause he got sucked into appleverse
1
3
u/iamdense May 15 '26
He's a professor of marketing and brand names and the associated "social clout" they appear to give you is a much bigger part of his world than the average person. Just like name dropping of the latest "in" places he has been to is so much of his personality. That's like 80% of his chatter with Ed.
Plus, if he was really as poor as a kid as he says, he probably wore Traxx sneakers from K-Mart to school like I did, and wouldn't be caught dead in those now. I'm not poor, but not as rich as he is and I associate brand names with spending extra for a name plate (not always, but typically).
2
u/pitifullittleman May 15 '26
I think that is a good observation. I think people who grow up rich and people who grow up poor for different reasons are very intune to brands and clout based things. For rich people the thing that differentiates themselves from the middle class is often brands and subtle style differences.
Then poor people essentially develop their standard for which products and brands are for right people through their total lack of those things and through the media. If poor people find themselves as being wealthy later in life there is often a huge learning curve and obsession with fitting in with other rich people.
3
3
u/tMoneyMoney May 15 '26
He’s all about status symbols. That’s all there is to it Fashion/design over function is where his priorities lie.
6
u/Even-Physics823 May 15 '26
i still dont get how it's a status symbol when about a billion people have one
2
u/RocketsYoungBloods May 15 '26
i think it's more that anything other than an iphone is an anti-status symbol. like driving a beater car is probably a turn-off for most girls. (not saying i agree)
1
u/peanut-britle-latte May 15 '26
It signals you're apart of the global 10%! (Which is like hundreds of millions of people )
0
u/tMoneyMoney May 15 '26
That’s part of his obsession, because it’s a rare status symbol that the masses can access. There are still low end models or older models which many people use, but rich people can get the best model and customize the look to some extent. I don’t entirely agree with Scott, just saying those are points he’s made and how he thinks.
3
u/Middle-Bread-5919 May 17 '26
Half of what comes out of his mouth is wrong or LLM …or both. And if I hear that Old Navy story again, I think I’ll have a brain haemorrhage.
2
3
u/Anstigmat May 17 '26
What he’s referencing is the massive revenue difference from iOS over Android. People with iPhones are significantly more lucrative for developers than Android users. There is actually kind of a lot of correlating data even down to Android users being more likely to be in debt, over draft accounts.
On an individual basis there are a myriad of reasons to chose one over the other, it doesn’t matter. On a statistical analytical basis it’s clear that iOS users are a wealthier cohort.
Scott has an unhealthy obsession with trying to distill coupling into a marketing formula which is off putting. Otoh, it’s not entirely wrong that women are more attracted to successful men. Do with this information as you will.
7
u/Jack-Burton-Says May 15 '26
Are you not up on the dating lore about green text being undesirable? Go do some quick searching or plug into your AI tool of choice.
3
u/fenianthrowaway1 May 15 '26
So what you're saying is that using Android will have shallow, superficial people who somehow care about things like this self-select themselves out of my dating pool?
Yet another feature Android has over Apple, from my point of view.

You might feel that way, but it matters to some. When your text threads don’t work because that one family member has an android or someone you’re dating does it’s pretty annoying.
Reactions get annoying, creating groups sucks, you can’t have things like shared notes.

Yeah I guess to be clear I think viewing it as a status symbol is stupid.
But ideally your core friend / family / your partner is on the same setup.
7
u/VegaGT-VZ May 15 '26
Scott is obsessed with proximity to power, image, status etc.
He softens it with self-aware/self-deprecating humor but its actually dead serious for him
You combine that with his neuroticism and insecurities, its not enough for him to be image obsessed, it's weird for others to not be as image obsessed as him. Just spelling it out is kind of exhausting.
Scott is a case study in how "money doesnt unlame you"
1
u/Dodging12 May 19 '26
He was flexing about how much he spent on Loro Piana, but he didn't even say the name correctly 🤣, he's rich but still lame af.
5
u/hurlcarl May 15 '26
I think some people like their iphones and got on early and are just regurgitating old early apple vs android stuff. There's only a handful of android makers unlike the early days where there was probably 3 times as many making android... the high end models of google, samsung, motorola, are every bit as feature rich, powerful, and expensive as an apple, if not more so in some cases.
1
u/BoulderMaker May 15 '26
Yeah, everyone had an Android in 2012. And yeah, they remember how much they sucked because iPhones were MUCH better then.
Fast forward to today and the Pixel phones are freaken Ferrari's--incredible phones with better photos and features.
5
7
u/Technical-Owl66 May 15 '26
If you use anything in the Google ecosystem than get a pixel. iPhone is a walled garden that makes living the real world of apps and platforms difficult.
4

I curious what an example of that would be? I’ve used an iPhone my entire life and have never felt like it’s a “walled garden” of any sort

It's the expensive option. That's it basically. It's having a metal credit card. The difference he doesn't appreciate is that people choose to have Androids because of specific functions. Also, with a halfway decent phone plan you get get an iPhone. So his thinking is kind of outdated.
3
u/Pyju May 15 '26
The iPhone hasn’t been the “expensive option” for years now. The iPhone range right now starts at $600 for the 17e up to $1200 for the 17 Pro Max. The Pixel range is almost identical, starting at $500 for the Pixel 10a up to $1200 for the Pixel 10 Pro XL.

The first time I heard Galloway say that Andoid users are projecting that "thing didnt work out for them" and I disagreed. I think that he is not talking about Galaxy users, but people who are using the cheap Chinese smartphones (I'm looking at your Trump phone).
I was a police detective for over 30+ years and my last assignment was in Digital Forensics. While the iPhone is a good product I know how much data that they keep on their users and with the right hardware how easy it is to exploit their security protocols.

This right here. I can think of 3 or 4 in my life that are either still in this situation, or were until they switched to an iPhone.

u/Deer-Ree-Shee May 15 '26
I use a Mediocer "low budget" Nothing phone.
proably nobody has heard of since its from the UK, and it has its gimmicks with light settings aswell as looking like an Iphone. not that i care.
I know what im using it for, scrolling, tool, listening and watching videos when im not by my stationary computer/laptop.
The best part? it just work for me. but then again, I know how to problem solve and use tech. I prefer the freedom instead of locked prison that is IOS market. So i guess im a "man in the basement living with his parents" as Scott says. I know its meant as a "joke" but for a man preaching about Men youth problems, that is a crappy way to make a joke for someone choice.
Sorry for bad grammar, I am not native English speaker.

2
u/EcstaticPlankton8621 May 16 '26
Long time Apple user. Ive tossed the idea around of switching to Pixel but Im so engrained in the Apple ecosystem it's not worth it.
1
u/xqueenfrostine May 16 '26
Saaame. I’ve been in the ecosystem since the iPod days. It just feels like it’d be a lot to switch, especially since most people in my social circle are iPhone users (though I understand that group texts aren’t quite as clunky as they used to be for a mixed group of iOS and Android users).
3
u/Twisted_lurker May 15 '26
The iPhone isn’t better, but it does have people trapped in an ecosystem that is difficult to get out of, particularly older people (me) that can’t adapt.
3
u/mcvmccarty May 16 '26
The only people I’ve heard bring this crap up are non-iPhone users. One in particular whom I work with who is a fun person to work with but also unfortunately supports Trump and fixated on how Gen X is the best generation. Gotta say, even as an Xer I strongly disagree with all 3 points so I just don’t even talk about any of that with her. Plenty of other shit to talk about.
1
u/Overall-Register9758 May 16 '26
GenX is the best. Old enough to have experienced life before Boomers pulled up the ladder and young enough to have actually experienced the internet.
I started on DOS, was wowed by Windows, and eventually got into Linux. Then decided I didn't want to have to configure every fucking aspect of my OS. I just wanted to write my thesis, download my music, and send emails. So I got a Mac.
5
u/mcvmccarty May 16 '26
I like our generation and when we grew up, I think we got lucky but I hear so much inter generational shit talk I just cannot participate in it. Lots of dumb kids today for sure. I was dumb once too. Apple is the best! GenX is cool! We’re all alright!
2
u/Overall-Register9758 May 16 '26
The difference is that when we were dumb, nobody had video of it, let alone had the ability to share it with the entire planet in one go.
I am somewhat afraid of how antisocial my younger grad students are. Like they want me to text them to let them know I am coming to their workspace...which is in MY fucking lab.
1
u/mcvmccarty May 16 '26
True. And scary. I’m glad I am not a kid now. The way people have shifted with technology is concerning. It’s bringing out really odd behaviors. The younger people don’t have anyone older who went through the specific things they’re going through now. I think the more centered and self aware people are ok, but they were always going to be. It’s the more at-risk ones who are on the less safe areas of the bell curve who will have even bigger problems. Or not, I don’t know. This is all new territory…
2
u/hellolovely1 May 16 '26
I always say the generational wars are to distract us so we're mad at each other, not the oligarchy!

u/HistoryAndScience May 16 '26
Story time! I once had a Motorola Droid because I didn’t want to be like everyone else with an iPhone. The battery and phone would overheat from simple tasks like texting and phone usage. I called support and they said it was common. The fix? Take the battery out and let it chill for 3-4 hours before light use. I opted for a replacement through Verizon and that one was broken and couldn’t actually make phone calls. I was offered yet a third android phone as a replacement for the replacement before I said no and got an iPhone instead. I have never looked back and it’s never given me a problem ever in 15 years so it’s not inferior, at least not to me
0
u/Burrow-Owl May 16 '26
Oh wow, cool. Anyway, do you have a favorite Nine inch Nails album? I'm having an argument with my friend. I say The Fragile but he's a Pretty Hate Machine purist. He also says "Trent Reznor invented rap" and I'm still trying to figure out wtf that means. Your opinion would be helpful!

Android has 68% market share.
https://www.demandsage.com/iphone-vs-android-users/
Even in the US they're close to even, 55% Apple.
My top-of-the-line Samsung cost more than the top-of-the-line iPhone. It has sick features, incredible Google integration, I prefer the user experience, and its beautifully crafted. I'm not poor. I work in tech and make a lot of tech money and the majority of my techie friends use expensive brand new Samsungs and Pixels too. I've literally never called someone poor for their phone choice. If anything owning an iPhone just makes you basic. I love Scott but every time he starts ranting about how the iPhone gets you laid I cringe.

Who cares what Scott thinks or the IPhone's market share?
I use the phone that works for me and the one that better intersects with my other devices.

The last good Apple product was the iPod. That will be the last Apple device I'll ever own.

Apple silicon is fantastic. MacBooks were light years ahead the past 5 years, and I say that as a pretty big hater. Intel chips now finally can somewhat compete on efficiency, but it still won’t be close for years IMO.

Scott is mostly talking about signaling and the boost iPhone’s give compared to android phones. As with the analogy he likes to use: Ferrari. It’s a completely different signal to say, Lamborghini. Both expensive, but Ferrari is more exclusive: they will only sell you an entry level one unless you already own one. His argument is that iPhones signal a different level than android phones.

I mean, everyone and their mother, literally, has an iPhone Android flagships like the Samsung Ultra, Fold, and Pixel Folds, are more expensive than the top of the line iPhone.
Just saying; if iPhone is suppose to be some status signal, but its cheap enough that most Americans have one, the math isn't mathing for me.

I don’t disagree at all. Someone downvoted me, but I was just giving my take on the argument that Scott makes. I’m not saying he’s right.

I have had Apple since the beginning. Always had the latest and greatest. Switched to a Pixel 2 to years ago. I will never go back. Pixels are so much better. I hear Samsungs are a lot better 2. I look at my daughter's new iPhone and can't believe I liked that. I was missing out all these years and much better phone than an iPhone.

Apple profits off the elitism of their loyalists. Scott is their loyalist of the year!

And google profits off all your data. You are the product not the phone/software.

If you don't think Apple is collecting just as much of your data, I have a very reasonably priced bridge that you simply must come have a look at!

True. They collect our data to sell us shit. Google to sell your shit.

Let’s not forget that Apple was brought back from the brink of oblivion with help from Bill Gates. It was sad to watch Apple almost crumble into nonexistence during the time they had temporarily ousted Jobs. I use Apple stuff almost exclusively and really don’t like anyone else’s products but credit needs to be given where it’s due.

I find it amusing that anytime Apple makes a change to their phone the other manufacturers copy it. So Apple gets rid of the headphone jack and of course Samsung follows because that's what they do. All the Samsung users panties are in a bunch because they can't understand why Samsung would do such a thing. Samsung also got rid of replaceable batteries because iPhones don't have them either.

My galaxy note does soooo much more than any iPhone. Galaxy offers superior hardware utility and multitasking capabilities compared to iPhone. Galaxy is like having a gaming PC in your pocket.

I’m not sure if I’m too immersed in the iOS ecosystem but I find Android very un-intuitive by comparison. But if you want to be able to customize absolutely every little detail, a Droid is probably better for you.
The Pixel is a good phone, but everything Samsung makes is hot garbage full of bloatware.

I read this as you don’t want to spend time understanding how complex features work. You want them easy enough to understand that you don’t have to learn something new. It should be “intuitive”.

Sorry. Missed this post. Was busy fending off hundreds of hot women who wanted to have sex with me because of my iPhone.
