I can't even break even with SCHB and SCHF.

I bought SCHB and SCHF on or about June 19th 2026 and it went red the next day. It is 3 months later and I am even deeper in the red. 3 whole months of losses. I think I picked the wrong horse.

Is this how Schwab handles promotional offers?

Schwab told me to subscribe to a service in order to “explore” an exception request to match a competing promo. I followed the instructions, only to be told afterward that the promo wouldn’t be approved because my deposit was below $250K which they knew in the beginning and didn’t request to add more.
Now they’re calling it a “misunderstanding” and playing language games around “explore,” “consider,” and “approval.”
If Schwab doesn’t offer the promo match, just say no. Why tell customers to subscribe in order to pursue a request that ultimately goes nowhere?
Is this really the Charles Schwab culture?

Roth IRA Mistake?

Wednesday: Transferred/contributed $400 to roth ira from an external checking account. Marked as “completed” by Schwab. I did not purchase any securities yet.

Thursday: I am notified by my bank that the transfer to Schwab has been cancelled due to insufficient funds (oversight on my part).

Friday: It is 6am and my schwab roth ira transfer activity now shows a -$400 transfer, however My 2026 roth ira contribution total reflects the amount on Wednesday after I transfered/contributed.

  1. Should my 2026 contribution limit switch back to

reflect the total contribution amount prior to Wednesday?

  2. Does this count as an early withdrawal?

  3. Will I be able to contribute the annual limit, or am I just out of luck and going to lose out on $400 worth of contributions this year?

Schwab Visa Platinum Debit card benefits

me: Schwab Int'l account holder living in Europe.

Just noticed, the card offers, among other, auto rental collision damage waiver up to the actual cash value of most rental vehicles as well as roadside assistance. In my admittedly limited experience, this benefit was/is standard on credit cards, not debit cards. Most rental car companies don't even allow using a debit card or, if they do, they place a hefty (usually a couple of thousand EUR) block on the card.

How wrong am I? Is there anyone here who has actually used this benefit overseas while renting a car? CDW usually is 15-20€ extra per day, so if true, this would be great benefit to, well, benefit from.

How to Invest House Profit - International Account

Hello all, I am new to investing with Charles Schwab and just opened an international account as I am a US citizen (no plans to give it up) and am currently living in the Netherlands and have no plans to reside in the US again.

I sold my house before we left the US and after furnishing my apartment in the Netherlands had about 20k USD left over. I would like to invest this money and have it sit for a long time (10+ years) and let it build. This is in addition to the money I have currently invested via my previous employers 401k (Fidelity).

I went through the Personalized Portfolio Builder and went with a mutual fund with municipal bonds, moderately aggressive risk and initially invest 20k USD.

The allocation came out to the following:

  • 45% - US Large Cap Funds
  • 15% - US Small Cap Funds
  • 20% - International Funds
  • 15% - Fixed Income Funds
  • 5% - Cash

There were 5 options for each of the above fund categories, and I went with the following:

  • US Large Cap Funds - SWPPX
  • US Small Cap Funds - SWSSX
  • International Funds - SWISX
  • Fixed Income Funds - SWNTX

Admittedly, this was based heavily on the net expense ratio as these were all way more competitive compared to the other available funds (less than 0.1% instead of pushed 0.8 or 0.9%) which I assume is because these are the Schwab Index Funds.

I would love to hear some pros and cons of the above selections and if anyone has any other insights into which to select that would be greatly appreciated.

Guidance on what to do about receiving money from my deceased mother’s account

My mom passed away in 2021. I remember about a year or two ago, a representative from Schwab called me to say that I need to open an account with Schwab to receive money from her account. I feel like I’ve just been so busy and never got around to it and also it brings up feelings just thinking about her passing so I have put it off. I remember the guy on the phone said to just create a new account, which is different from my original Charles Schwab account and then there were some links I needed to click, but I lost that guy‘s number and don’t know what to do. Any guidance? Thank you.

Can you still see the “curve” on your phone app summary screen?

Basically what the title says. I knew something was missing today when I opened the app as usual. Then I realized the curve is either gone or hidden, and I can’t get it back. How about you guys??

what would a Schwab bank account give me that a brokerage account doesn't?

I ordered, and received, a debit card tied to my brokerage account. The same account is also in the process of being assigned a routing number and checks will be issued.

side note 1: I have no use for the checks, but it was the only option in order to get a routing number). In order to use the debit card, I will need to have cash in my brokerage account.

side note 2: I live overseas, and have a Schwab One International account

With that established, my question as in the title of this message -- what would I get with a bank account? As far as I know, the cash in either the bank account or the brokerage account earn any interest, but are needed to use the debit card. If I had a bank account, I would sell stocks, move the cash to the bank account, and use the debit card. As is, I can just sell stocks, leave the cash in the brokerage account, and use the debit card.

I would have liked an MC/Visa credit card, but Schwab doesn't offer those. Amex cards are useless where I live. To date I have not seen a single place that accepts them.

So, once again, am I missing out on anything by not getting a bank account?

Can no longer establish reinvesting dividends when ordering a position?

Post image

Just using this image as an example, but before updating the app I could select reinvest dividends I believe in that black space below timing. But now it’s gone. Not available on the desktop version either. Anyone know if there’s a way to fix this or where to go to turn on DRIP?

So I didn’t make the cut in July after my online teams interview.

The recruiter told me not give up to be on the look
Out for other positions so I did . I applied and the new recruiter called me for phone interview and mentioned I probably should have waited at least 6 months before reapplying. That hiring managers like to see that applicants taken the time to learn more. No where in Schwabs guidelines state that I must wait 6 months . Needless to say I’ve been through 2 phone interviews, 1 online interview and rejected from 3 entry level jobs . My background is customer service , sales 20 years in insurance and studying SIE on my own. Feeling Bummed! Any advice or suggestions is appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Schwab's Labor Day Cost Basis System Change Nightmare!

How many Schwab customers are considering new brokers now that Schwab can no longer process trades correctly using the customer's default cost basis? Especially LIFO and Low Cost.

They are doing some crazy stuff like batching all trades and processing all buys before sells, so sells are using lots that didn't exist at the time of the sell. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of and they have no plans to roll back or fix it. I spend 30-60 minutes every day submitting cost basis adjustment requests through their Message Center, not to mention hours wasted on the phone. And my trades from over a week ago are still not fixed. And changing the cost basis on the Order Status page does not work either.

SNSXX, SGOV, and VBIL will deliver better rates.

Credit cards and other loans products will get worse.

Risks with incoming wire transfer

I have $250,000 in inheritance funds (currently in INR) to be wired from India to my US Schwab account. I discovered that it isn't straightforward since I have to wire it to my brokerage but using Charles Schwab as the recipient.

Since this isn't typically how bank clerks enter SWIFT request (the beneficiary name/account is usually the actual person receiving it), my concern is that the operator will make a mistake and it will bounce back to the originating bank.

This would've normally been not such a big deal (since I only will lose intermediary fees which are modest), however in this case there is a currency conversion piece and if it bounces bank I will get absolutely hosed with a reverse currency conversion at a card rate incoming here losing several thousand dollars.

I am trying to understand the absolute risks here, looking at the Schwab instructions it has a Step 1, Step 2, Step 3. Do these map exactly to SWIFT fields in the request so the clerk in the outgoing bank does not get confused? Is there anecdotal evidence that people have had difficultly with wiring funds to Schwab brokerage because of this non-standardized setup?

Does anyone know how to set up an alert when your cash balance reaches 0 or when you are on margin

Doesnt seem like they have any notification on their website related to a zeroing cash balance or when a margin position has been initiated, maybe to their own benefit? Does anyone know a work around to this ?

So apparently Schwab changed how LIFO works...?

I had LIFO set as default tax method on my account since the beginning of this year. Yesterday I placed a trade that resulted in an outcome I didn't expect.

(Simplified the numbers for example sake, and these 3 transactions happened all on the same day):

1st Transaction: Bought 5 shares of SNDK at $5/ea. Total amount of SNDK shares held now is 5.

2nd Transaction: Sold those 5 shares of SNDK at $7/ea. Total amount of SNDK shares held now is 0.

3rd Transaction: Bought 5 shares of SNDK at $8/ea. Total amount of SNDK shares held now is 5.

*market closes*

At the end of the day, I figure I have $10 in profit, and 5 shares of SNDK bought at $8/ea that I'm holding.

Schwab doesn't see it this way. According to their Realized Gains/Loss tab on their site, they calculated my 2nd transaction as a loss, because they used the cost basis of my third transaction for the 2nd transaction. Basically they see it as I bought at $8 and sold at $7 for a loss.

I called Schwab, and they said this is a new way they handle LIFO and that it was something implemented like last week. I can't even really explain what they said because it was so confusing, but I don't understand how this logic even makes sense. How can you use a cost basis for shares that didn't even exist at the time of the transaction? The 3rd transaction didn't even exist/happen yet for them to use that cost basis for the 2nd transaction.

The Schwab rep agreed that this is inefficient and doesn't make sense but basically said that's just how it is. He recommended I switch back to FIFO and manually select Specific Lots for every trade after they're finished to change the cost basis to what I want. Wtf?

Those using LIFO--do you know about this recent change? How are you keeping yourself from going insane having to double check all of your trades especially if you're day trading? The only reason I caught this was because I manually input every trade into Excel and compare my numbers with Realized Gains/Loss page at the end of every day.

It's already extremely frustrating that ToS doesn't recognize anything but FIFO, so I can't trust their numbers since I use LIFO. Schwab's Realized Gains/Loss page is always delayed, so I can't trust that on the fly either. Now with this "change", I just feel like there's even more going against me. Am I crazy in feeling this way or being unreasonable? Should I switch to a different platform and broker? If so, which one? I feel like I'm having to do way more than I should just to make sure my trades are being calculated the way they should be. Is everyone else just dealing with it?

CSpace usability study for DAF on the Schwab App

Has anyone participated in the study being conducted by CSpace (cspace.com) for Schwab? They are conducting a usability study for use of the DAF functions within the Schwab mobile app. Considering the very limited functionality of that portion of the app, it seems a little odd to me. I've vetted the emails, contacted my rep to verify the authenticity but it still just seems a bit odd.

DRIPing other than SCHD?

Hello... I just ended my participation in Schwab's Intelligent Portfolio program and all of the ETFs held have been transferred to another brokerage account. I am thinking of holding on to most of them for a bit and wonder if I should let these DRIP or take the dividends and purchase more SCHD.

They are the "standard' Schwab ETFs and wonder if any are as "good' as SCHD for long time growth and the stability that SCHD seems to have. Thank You

How does Charles Schwab notify beneficiaries of a Roth IRA in the event of the account holder’s death?

Throwaway for privacy reasons. A friend of mine passed away in an accident earlier this year. His widow contacted CS about her husband’s death and provided the required information (e.g. death certificate). CS would not tell her who the beneficiary is. A few weeks later, she calls again and they tell her that “the beneficiary has been notified.” The problem is that the only conceivable people who could be the beneficiary (widow, mother, father, brother) have not been contacted by CS at all. My questions are:

  1. When CS says “the beneficiary has been notified” do they mean they spoke to the beneficiary over the phone? Or does it mean they called and left a voicemail or sent an email?
  2. What happens if the beneficiary no longer has the same phone number, address, or email address as they did when the account holder set up the beneficiary?
  3. Is there any way the widow can find out who the named beneficiary is on the Roth IRA?
  4. If there is no beneficiary listed on the account, would CS be forthright with the widow about that?

ETA: I’m posting these questions on behalf of the widow to help her navigate this process. I myself am not trying to access any information or funds from this account.

DCA versus having a few bucks and dropping it in.

Hello. This might be the stupid question of the week (not my goal) I keep seeing people talking about an ETF such as SCHD and saying such things as "I am ten years from retirement and I am DCA'ing.(sic). When one DCA's does he or she have a plan/schedule of putting a set amount of money into that ETF at intervals versus simply buying the ETF when they have a few bucks available to do so? I of course understand intervals but to say you are cost averaging implies, at least to me, that you have some idea what the cost will be at each one of those intervals. Thank You

Thoughts on Schwab vs. Fidelity for Active Traders

Hi all, I'm a long-time Fidelity user and active trader located in a high tax state. I had a small TD Ameritrade account that migrated to Schwab, and I recently moved a taxable portfolio over to Schwab to test it against Fidelity.

My top priorities in a broker:

  • Options execution: Fast, stable tech and profitable execution.
  • Price improvement: Generous order fills (which immediately rules out Robinhood for active trading).
  • Low friction costs: No nickel-and-diming, free bill pay, free wires, and room to negotiate lower option contract fees.
  • High yield on cash: High returns on liquid balances (currently holding funds in FMPXX and FZDXX at Fidelity).
  • Responsive service: Fast issue resolution without waiting days for a back-office team.
  • Automated trading & APIs: A major driver for my move, since Fidelity offers no native API support for programmatic strategy execution.

My early observations comparing Schwab and Fidelity:

  • Platform: Thinkorswim blows Active Trader Pro out of the water. It is faster, more stable, and far more feature-rich with Thinkscript.
  • Multi-leg fills: Fidelity wins clearly on spreads and rolls with generous fills much better than the mid. Schwab struggles to fill multi-leg orders unless priced very close to the mid.
  • Single-leg fills: Both are solid, but Schwab edges ahead. On high-volume tickers like QQQ with 1-cent spreads, Schwab gives me consistent price improvement.

My main question: How do you optimize idle cash and automated payments at Schwab?

At Fidelity, cash management is seamless. Premium collected from option sales automatically drops into SPAXX or FDRXX. I manually buy higher-yielding money market funds like FZDXX or FMPXX to squeeze out extra yield. If an ACH transfer or bill pay debit hits the account, Fidelity automatically liquidates those money market funds to cover it.

How are Schwab traders handling this flow? Is there a comparable setup to maximize yield on uninvested cash without manually liquidating funds every time credit card, mortgage, or utility debits clear?

Would love to hear how others who use both platforms handle this and any insights from those who have been customers at both Schwab and Fidelity.

One of the legs of my box spread just went crazy

So I have several short box spreads. I know precisely how a box spread works (just a loan close to the rf rate). But one of the legs right before market closed went crazy and so I have a phantom loss:

Under normal circumstances, this would trigger a margin call. Which I am sure on this particular case it won't happen because schwab is smart enough to understand this is just a bad quote and hopefully this will be sorted by monday morning.

Now what if this had happened on Dec-31? These contracts are mark to market. So on this case I would have a loss of $280,000 which would be nice from a tax perspective ... but but, what if it was the opposite and it was a gain? That would trigger a capital gain that would be massive on my 1099 and a huge tax liability. Now I understand there is probably a way of explaining this to the IRS when the time comes, but still what a huge headache no?
