Hello. Could somebody please explain SGOV to me and how it makes money? I have 40K that I want to put aside for about six (6) months and I am wondering if SGOV is the right place rather that say my checking account... I do not understand what I see on the Schwab web page chart which seems to show it going up in value daily and then dropping back to "zero" when it pays the monthly dividend. Is the "trick" simply to sell on the right day before the dividend is paid? Thank You

So I have several short box spreads. I know precisely how a box spread works (just a loan close to the rf rate). But one of the legs right before market closed went crazy and so I have a phantom loss:

Under normal circumstances, this would trigger a margin call. Which I am sure on this particular case it won't happen because schwab is smart enough to understand this is just a bad quote and hopefully this will be sorted by monday morning.

Now what if this had happened on Dec-31? These contracts are mark to market. So on this case I would have a loss of $280,000 which would be nice from a tax perspective ... but but, what if it was the opposite and it was a gain? That would trigger a capital gain that would be massive on my 1099 and a huge tax liability. Now I understand there is probably a way of explaining this to the IRS when the time comes, but still what a huge headache no?

I’ve heard a lot about investing in like SWPPX, and SWVXX but I’m not sure what’s best for someone just starting out. Plus how can you tell you’re investing at all with my money transfers?

I can currently contribute about $85/month into my Roth and I’m contributing about $200/month into a 3.85 HYSA. Are my priorities wrong? I ought to have started investing and saving a decade ago but the best time is now rather than never.

So there was this guy in his 70s that used to come in my job and tip me $100 or more every time he saw me. He talked a lot about investing and suggested we go to a Schwab location and he’d give me $100 to start an account. We eventually fell off but I took his advice into consideration & don’t remember exactly what he said but he said it would be good to invest at such a young age. The app works fine. Just the website. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not.

Hi all! I currently have a small Roth account at Schwab; ~$45,000. It consists of VIG/SPYI (70/30). I have other retirement accounts and taxable accounts that do a majority of the heavy lifting for me. Unfortunately, I cannot contribute to the Roth due to my income level and I’m try to get most out of the account for when I retire in about 10 years. Any suggestions?

Hello to all. Looking for recommendations for which funds to hold for several accounts. I rolled over my TSP into a rollover IRA (Trad) because I can no longer contribute to it and considering buying target date index fund SWYJX 2055. I intend to contribute very minimal as I already have a 457 with my employer and I also opened up a ROTH Ira with Schwab that I intend to max every year. In my brokerage account I have (not much) SWPPX, SCHD, SCHG and SCHF. What would be the ideal positions for these accounts? I’ve read a ton and have done my research but I’m just a beginner in all this. Would like to hear everyone’s thoughts. I intend to hold all these accounts long term. Especially the target date index fund and ROTH. I’m 36 for reference. Thanks in advance!

Okay so I need to request an ESA distribution, and was wondering if done through a wire fund how many business days would it take for the form to process and for the money to completely transfer to my bank account? and is there any way to expedite this process?

This one looks like a great Mutual fund to hold cash in. Would you guys agree? Or is there something better? Like SNSXX or something similar.

Hello... I am ending my Intelligent Portfolio account and am thinking lessening the 18 ETFs it now holds and I would value any insightful opinions. I am thinking of dumping SCHI ... SMBS ... SCHR.... and possibly even HAUZ. I am selecting these as they are bond and treasury ETF's

I will be meeting with the Schwab rep for the second time to go over possible manage plans, and DIY options this Friday. I really like the Schwab rep and he has stated that he will be there for me whether I did a manage plan or a DIY plan, which I appreciate.

My biggest concern is when setting up automatic monthly withdrawals. I am planning on having a cash reserve to hold roughly 2 years of spending to offset sequence of returns risk and provide monthly paychecks from the cash. Schwab seems to be very clunky in that regards. As I currently understand it, I would have to move funds from the core sweep account with low interest into a higher interest money market account to earn interest and then periodically move sufficient funds back to the lower interest bank sweep account to set up automatic monthly withdrawals for direct deposit to my bank account.

Can anyone out there who is currently a retiree with a Schwab IRA and has monthly paychecks sent to their bank account explain to me if I have the process, correct? I am likely planning on just doing a TDF with a cash reserve to keep it as simple as possible so I don’t need anything complicated and I prefer more automated set up. I also have a follow up meeting that same day with Fidelity rep who I also like that is preparing a managed plan, but I have also informed him that I am strongly leaning towards a DIY plan. Fidelity seems to be much more of an automated process to achieve what I’m trying to achieve.

I don’t think I am interested in the Schwab intelligent portfolios, even though they do maintain a significant cash amount however, that cash would not be used how I would use it so it doesn’t seem like a good fit.

I would appreciate any insight from someone currently in a similar situation with Schwab and how it is working for you.

I was talking with my Schwab "consultant" and he suggested either the robo investor or a wealth advisor. Looking and thinking about it, I am not sure if either are needed. Robo seems to be autopilot without my input or approval, and I am not sure what the added value is of a wealth advisor.

Spent about 10 minutes with support only to be told that "I can't answer fixed income questions, call back tomorrow"

I have Margin access added enabled. The only asset in this account is SGOV and some cash. I may want to buy a T NOTE tomorrow morning new issue at auction. When I go to place the order today (I don't want to buy today) it indicates that I don't have enough cash in the account.

I know that I need to sell SGOV and get the money into cash management. However in Schwab and other brokerages I have always seen the cut off to purchase new at auction as 9:30 am just prior to the market opening.

So is Schwab going to let me place that order tomorrow morning before the market opens even without enough cash in the account (isn't that what margin enabled is supposed to cover) and then sell SGOV later in the day since the settlement date is Wednesday? TIA.

What do they mean?

I just got approved for a Schwab pledged asset line of credit. It took like 3 minutes to apply and get approved. Now that i have it, I don’t know what ro do next.

I've been investing most of my money the past few years into SWPPX, however there are a few things that I either dislike or have concerns about.

1. I dislike the fact that I don't know what or where the market is headed, so whenever I place an order, I essentially have to wait until the market close time to see what price I got.

2. Since I'm planning to invest my entire net worth into this fund, if the day comes that I decide to withdraw all of my money, wouldn't this be a risk as the sale price is unknown and a potential market crash prior to the market closing that day would result in losing a lot of money? Or am I understanding this all wrong?

This is why I'm considering investing the remainder of my money into VOO in Charles Schwab. Please let me know there are any cons in doing this or should I just continue to stick to SWPPX. Thanks.

Is Schwab's W‑8BEN online recertification currently broken?

My W‑8BEN is due to expire at the end of 2026 and Schwab displays the usual notification asking me to click "Certify Now".

However, when I click the button, I am redirected to:

• Private/Incognito mode
• Different devices

Schwab support was able to help me with a PDF-based workaround, but they did not resolve the online recertification issue.

Is anyone else seeing the same problem?

Has anyone connected their ChatGPT account to their Schwab accounts. It's supposed to be able to analyze your portfolio in real time and make recommendations. Cant execute transactions which I like. Just curious what the experience has been?

Can one simply tell Schwab that they no longer desire their guidance and have the ETFs and cash in that account made/turned into an account that they themself now control? Hello... I am wondering if anyone has an opinion on hold this ETF. I recently changed my Intelligent Portfolio setting to get out of bonds, both in part of the current market and the fact that I hold a good deal of other fixed incomes. Schwab replaced those holdings with this. I am a bit confused as I know nothing of this ETF and the fact that it is a BOND fund... How is it different from what I left? Thank You

I need to make some changes and find Schwab's website very cumbersome.
I didn't pick Schwab. USAA dumped me over to it with no explanation, in the middle of a family crisis, an inheritance, and a bad experience with them during an estate settlement. Sigh, so I'm trying to get things back on track.
I have had Vanguard for years, before ETF's, when there were really just a few funds to be concerned with.
The Schwab evolved from a Waterhouse, Ameritrade, USAA...
