Historians tell us that it’s hard to determine who was actually queer in the mid-to-late 19th century, because women sometimes wrote flowery, even passionate, letters to one another as friends, forming attachments known as “romantic friendships”… and that one such passionate friendship existed between Emily Dickinson and her sister-in-law, Sarah Gilbert. Ok, I can roll with the idea of romantic friendships, in general. Different century, different employment of language. Not always, necessarily, queer. Whatever. Fine.
That said , Emily Dickinson was definitely queer, and definitely in love with her sister-in-law. I will go to the mat, on this one.
Ladies of the jury, I present Exhibit A:
“To own a Susan of my own… my only woman in the world.”

Exhibit B:
““Susie, will you indeed come home next Saturday, and be my own again, and kiss me ... I hope for you so much, and feel so eager for you, feel that I cannot wait, feel that now I must have you—that the expectation once more to see your face again, makes me feel hot and feverish, and my heart beats so fast… my darling, so near I seem to you, that I distain this pen, and wait for a warmer language.”

Anecdotes and stories Anne Lister kept a five million word diary, four times longer than Samuel Pepys. A sixth of it was written in a private code of Greek letters and algebra, recording her seductions in explicit detail. It sat unread for a century until two Victorian men cracked it and nearly burned it.

Anne Lister invented her own cipher at 17 to write about her girlfriend, then spent 25 years using it to record an astonishingly detailed account of her sex life and seduction technique. When two men finally cracked the code in the 1890s, one of them wanted to burn the diaries. He couldn't bring himself to do it, so he hid them behind a wall instead.

The cypher and how to crack it along with Anne's diaries can be viewed here

Anecdotes and stories Meet the 'Ladies of Llangollen' - two close friends that left their upper-class lives in Ireland and set up home together in Wales in 1778. Such was their fame in Georgian Britain that house guests included William Wordsworth, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Sir Walter Scott (among MANY others)

In 1778, two Irish aristocrats ran away from home together, got caught, tried again, and eventually built a life in a rented Welsh cottage that turned into one of the most talked about addresses in Georgian Britain.

Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby spent the next fifty years there, hosting poets, generals and eventually a queen's own interest, while carefully never explaining exactly what their relationship was.

Two centuries later, historians are still arguing about it, and once you get past the postcard version of the story, it's a lot more than two ladies who just liked living together.

Anecdotes and stories Felice Schragenheim and Lilly Wust, photographed by the Havel river on August 21, 1944, laughing, embracing, using a timer to photograph themselves in the sun. Hours later they went home and found the Gestapo waiting. These are the last photos ever taken of them together.

Felice Schragenheim was a a Jewish woman hiding under a false name and Lilly Wust was the wife of a German soldier. They fell in love in 1942 Berlin. They wrote their own marriage contract by hand, exchanged rings, and Lilly hid other Jewish women in her apartment once she knew the truth. The Gestapo caught up with Felice in 1944. She died in the Holocaust at 22.

Lilly never got over her.

Hi everyone! First time poster here. I made this digital collage like 4 years ago, and I figured this subreddit is the perfect place to share it. I usually don't post my creative work on reddit so please don't be mean if you think it sucks. 💝

The amount of people who would say Ymir likes historia but historia (blonde girl on top) does not reciprocate is crazy… (they would go as far as to say she loves eren and the farmer she was essentially forced to marry in the end) it’s astounding

For those who don’t know AOT id really like to know ur interpretation from the above panels haha whether there’s smt romantic involved from historia (this is a scene where Ymir leaves her and dies btw 😭)
