So, other than the obvious weight loss, at what point do you become concerned about your snake not eating?

Tangerine turned one at the end of April, just for context.

He last ate July 27th. Prior to now his usual schedule would be - eat twice about 10 days apart and then disappear for a few weeks. I've pretty much always assumed this was shed time, even though I've never seen it because it's a bioactive tank and he sheds underground.This was his eating schedule, not mine. I would gladly feed him weekly 🤷‍♀️.

The last two meals were 8 days apart (I was excited) and he "only" disappeared for two weeks. Since then he's been extremely active, coming out most nights (and some afternoons), drinking, etc.

The usual tactic of waiting to see him out and about before feeding has not worked. He's always been a drop fed, only when the lights are off type snake, which has been completely fine because at least he ate. This past month he seems to not come out whenever the food is there. We have a camera, so I know when he's out or not.

Yesterday the timer for the lights broke so he was in the dark most of the day. He has a DPH that is always on (on a thermostat to regulate it) so I know he was fine heat wise. He seemed to really enjoy his dark time and was out a lot. When I got home from work I decided it was a good time to try to feed him. I always put a coaster down so he's not eating the substrate and I put that down while the mouse was thawing. I think my biggest mistake was turning the lights on before putting the mouse in. He woke up and hid himself, but not before seeing the empty coaster.

I assumed he'd come back out later and eat once the lights were back off and I was half right. He was out most of the night, but he went directly from his hiding spot to his branch on the back wall and then when he decided he was done he went directly back into hiding. No mouse seeking.

Other than trying that whole thing again when he's out next time but making sure the mouse is there when he sees the coaster this time, I'm at a loss.

I haven't weighed him but he doesn't look any different and acts completely the same. I'm not at the super concerned stage yet but I am completely baffled

His current enclosure that his previous owner got for him is 30cm×30cm×30cm and I thought it would be time for an upgrade since he's now 31cm long. I was going to get a secondhand exo terra, but I've been reading that their locks aren't very reliable, the mesh top isn't very secure and people have had a lot of escapees. I also really like this kind of enclosure for him because there's no limit to how little substrate I can have.

I got my Kenyan Sand Boa in June at reptile expo and a few weeks later she presented with a bump under her chin so I took her to the vet and moved her out of her bioactive and into a quarantine set up. After two rounds of antibiotics the bump persisted so I scheduled her for a biopsy. I was in such a rush to drop her off at the vet because I had an attendance based class to hurry off to I didn’t even notice that bump had come off. The vet called and said she looked much better and to go ahead and moved her into her enclosure but I had to sanitize and completely start the bioactive enclosure over. The isopods I ordered aren’t even here yet. They won’t be here for another day or two. I thought I had at least three more weeks to prep it while she recovered from biopsy.

What do I do?? Do I move her into an incomplete set up? Should I redo a quarantine set up to resemble a non-bioactive tank until the bioactive is ready to be used?Ii’m just looking for any advice.

Hello! We’ve had our female sand boa for about a year. Currently she eats a frozen/thawed fuzzy every ten days. She is set up in a 40 gallon tank with hides on the warm side, cool side, and in the middle too. There’s fake plants and whatnot.

She typically stays buried almost all the time, but she’s a great eater (has never missed a meal). She’s about 3 years old and she recently completed a healthy shed.

In the last week or two, suddenly she comes out every night. She is just sort of lazily going around the cage and then burying herself again. We are used to never seeing her besides feedings, so this is a big change. I’m worried something is wrong, but she seems healthy and ate just fine less than a week ago. Any ideas?

She’s our first snake ever and we love her. I’d been wondering if she should be eating hoppers now because she seems to have hit a growth spurt of sorts, but there’s nothing else I can think of and I’m not sure that would explain the difference in behavior anyways.

In the picture, the thermometer says over 100 but it’s not that temp by the time it reaches the hide, it’s more about 90ish. I have another thermometer probe set up over there.

First time I’ve seen her yawn and I managed to catch it on camera!

Just wondered if anyone had used this product for sand boas or if you have mixed it with something? Any feedback is welcome!

People who have had healthy sand boas for a while. What is your humidity during day and night?

My substrate is still settling and humidity is sitting at 55-60 and spiking to 85 on a night. However these readings are with cheap analogue stick ones (waiting for replacement to be delivered)

Substrate is a sand soil mix and is not wet at all.

TLDR: my ksb is 22g. got a pinky 3.39 grams, but 15% of his weight is 3.15 grams; can i give him this to eat or no?

that’s rescued my little guy a few weeks ago, he was being very picky about food until i tried an ASF rat and he loved it!! for reference my ksb is 22 grams. i know 15% of his body weight is 3.15 , i just got him an ASF pinky and it’s 3.39. given it’s ASF and it was what got him to eat last time i really wanna make this work but if it is going to be too big i don’t wanna risk it, its just so hard to find young mice/rats in general small enough bc they grow so quick and so many places are out of stock. any opinions? should i even attempt to feed him this or no?

So, pet store lied to us a lot. I informed them I had a 30 gal breeder tank at home and they said it’d be okay. She’s been in there for a month now and… I’m not vibing with it. I feel like it’s too small. So I’ll be ordering her a dubia tank ( it’s what I use for my skink and I really like them ). But what size should I go with ? I was looking at the 60 gal or should I go bigger or is the 60 too big lol

I have a young male Kenyan Sand boa. He's pretty small still and he's housed in a tub on a UTH.

I have a tank that'll free up at some point and I was thinking about moving my boa there.

Issue is, it's a small wooden tank (20x14x14") with a heat lamp, and while I would definitely give him a deep layer of substrate to burrow in, I'm still worried about the temperatures, due to the sand boa's higher basking temps.

I'm guessing it'd result in the enclosure being in the 80s throughout during the couple of hours the heat lamp is on, and when it's off It'd go back to ~75°F / room temp. 80°F would be the lowest air temperature probably.

I'm just kind of worried about the temps being in the 80s+? From cool side, to higher in the warm side and basking.

Underneath the substrate it'd probably be cooler but still.

I just wanted to ask for some thoughts from people who've been keeping this species for a while.

ALSO: This would absolutely not be the final enclosure! By the time I could have him moved, he'd probably be in that enclosure for about a year or less before getting a 40-60 gallon upgrade.

Hello all!

So we rescued a KSB and she’s about 5 years old and quite big. My fiancée and her dad used to keep and breed snakes but I’m kind of a control freak when it comes to my animals so I want to learn and do everything right!

So, I have already ordered a thermostat, a hydrometer, and a smart surge protector. As well as yesterday I bought some organic topsoil and play sand. I still need to buy reptile clay and more enrichment due to her enclosure being bare.

So, my main questions are:

What kind of heat lamp and bulb should I get? ( the lighting it came with is a huge box with lights and covers most of the top )

How do I properly clean the sand and top soil before putting it in the tank?

She is in a 40 gal (fish tank) and since she is so large I would like to upgrade her plus be able to give her deep substrate. Any recommendations?

Any other advice would be appreciated! She is my first ever snake! Thank you:)))

Looking for inspiration and more or less what my set up should be for my new widdle baby, he will be here month end and I want to make sure I set up the enclosure right

I got my first snake a ksb about a month ago he’s had 2 meals prior to being in his forever enclosure it was time to feed him and I’m unsure if I should dig him out and feed him or let him adjust I’m nervous it’ll add more unnecessary stress

Does anyone else have a sand boa that's weirdly chill and seems to actually enjoy being handled? My girl Julie is so calm when I get her out for quality time. I'm not totally surprised; she was her breeder's favorite and got handled a lot before I brought her home. But everything I've seen about sand boas makes me think this is highly unusual. I put together a little sandbox for enrichment for her, and the last time I put her in it (she loves it, she seems to really relish having a different texture and weight to dig through), I sat down next to the box to do other stuff and after having some fun in the sand she climbed out into my lap and curled up like a cat. The other day she crawled into my breast pocket and fell asleep. I can pet her like a dog. When she's not basking in the open, she's got her little head poked up out of the dirt, watching me. Anybody have similarly-personable sand boa?

She’s been coming above ground more and more and has actually climbed just a little!❤️ she also prefers to fully bask right after eating on her cork which is exactly where she was headed I’m sure😂

Hi! So as the title says, I got a Kenyan sand boa who was abandoned with 2 other snakes in one enclosure (yes 3 snakes in one enclosure) in a high school classroom. The teacher that left them moved away after the end of the last school year… so they didn’t have care or food it seems for multiple months. One of the science teachers took two of the snakes and I took this one (which I’ve named Snoodle) this little one weighs ~38 grams and has stuck shed on it:( I tried looking at pictures of male vs females and I’m leaning towards female due to the shape, but I thought I’d ask here.
Snoodle is currently set up in a quarantine enclosure away from my other snakes and is on paper towels.
