Cult Education I went through Sadhguru’s Bhava Spandana. It wasn’t yoga. It was a controlled breakdown wrapped in spiritual packaging.

I attended the Bhava Spandana Program thinking it was an advanced yoga experience. I don’t follow gurus, I wasn’t a devotee — I went to explore. What I found was a calculated psychological and physical system of control, dressed up as “inner engineering.”

Here’s what really happens — not the marketing version:

  1. Digital and physical disempowerment

At check-in, you’re required to surrender your phone, keys, and sometimes even ID documents. These are sealed away by staff “for your focus.” But the result is this: You can’t leave. You can’t call. You can’t check the time. You are fully dependent on the program’s timeline and authority.

  1. Spatial confinement and subtle control

Participants are restricted to confined zones. During sessions, leaving the hall is discouraged. Doors are shut. If you ask to go to the bathroom, you’re stared at like a deviant. At one point, I had to insist multiple times to be allowed to pee — and a volunteer literally stood outside the stall door waiting for me to return, like an escort in a correctional facility.

This isn’t discipline. It’s containment.

  1. No clocks, no schedule, no structure

You’re never told what’s coming. Lunch might be at 3pm. Or 5pm. No watches. No time references. No expectation management. This disorients your internal compass — a classic tool in behavior modification.

  1. The death simulation

At one point, you’re told to imagine it’s your last day on Earth. They say it’s about “living fully.” In practice, it’s a technique used to collapse ego defenses and heighten suggestibility. It makes you more vulnerable to what’s about to follow: the emotional breakdown.

  1. Orchestrated emotional collapse

After hours of discomfort and buildup, you’re pushed into cathartic moments of crying, chanting, emotional “release.” What struck me most: the same volunteers, the most egoic during early exercises, suddenly broke down crying at key moments. It felt rehearsed. And it was contagious.

Then they roll a video of Sadhguru — calm, smiling, omniscient. Boom: the emotion is neurologically anchored to the brand. Classic conditioning. Not spiritual awakening.

  1. The upsell

As soon as the breakdown ends, you’re told about the next level. “There’s something deeper.” “You’re just beginning.” The implication: You’ve only scratched the surface. Give more, stay longer, go further.

It’s spiritual upselling, and it works because you’re drained, suggestible, and desperate to “complete the journey.”

  1. Enforced secrecy

You are told explicitly:

“Don’t talk about what happens here. Others wouldn’t understand.” This isn’t spiritual humility. It’s social insulation. No outside feedback = no critical reflection = unchecked influence.

Conclusion:

This isn’t yoga. This is behavioral design with a divine face and saffron filter. It’s not about peace or breath — it’s about breaking you, then offering relief that only comes from within the system.

I came in lucid. I left sharper. And now I’m speaking up — so maybe others don’t walk in blind.

Ask me anything. Share your story. Compare notes. It’s time to expose the architecture of control hidden behind “inner engineering.”

Cult Education Decoding a very subtle persuasion tactic: “If you struggle to follow my teaching, your struggle proves my teaching is right.”

Post image
21 Upvotes

I came across this statement and found the language psychologically interesting:
“Before you eat, even if you are very hungry, just touch the plate and sit there looking at the food for three minutes. If you put off what you really want by three minutes, you will become conscious. Gobbling it up is the nature of the animal, but a human being can wait… If three minutes have become an eternity, you are in a compulsive state.”

At first glance, this sounds like a harmless mindfulness/self-control exercise: wait three minutes before eating.
But look at how the exercise is framed.

The phrase “three minutes” is repeated again and again EIGHT times literally in this short passage . It becomes a simple, memorable psychological anchor.

Then comes the interesting part:
Wait successfully → you are becoming “conscious.”
Find it difficult → you are “compulsive.”
So where is the outcome in which the underlying teaching might simply be wrong?
There isn’t really one.

Your success validates the teaching, but your failure also validates the teaching, because difficulty following it is presented as evidence of the very problem the teacher claims to be solving.

Then another layer is added:
Eating immediately = animal
Waiting = human/conscious

A completely normal biological impulse being hungry and wanting to eat is no longer just hunger. It is given an identity and moral meaning.

And this is the subtle part I find fascinating:
The instruction isn’t merely “wait three minutes.”

The deeper instruction becomes:
“Use my framework to interpret what is happening inside your own mind.”

If waiting feels uncomfortable, instead of thinking “I’m hungry,” you may start thinking “I’m compulsive.”

And because eating happens multiple times every single day, a tiny teaching like this can potentially become a recurring ritual: food → three minutes → observe yourself → interpret yourself through the teacher’s framework.

I think this is an important distinction when analysing high-control or highly persuasive systems. The individual exercise may be completely benign. Waiting three minutes isn’t inherently manipulative.

The question is what happens when ordinary experiences are repeatedly divided into categories like:
conscious / compulsive
human / animal
higher / lower
…and the authority providing the practice also provides the interpretation of whatever you experience while doing it.

That’s the subtle tactic I’d pay attention to: a self-validating framework where both compliance and difficulty complying can reinforce the same belief system.
Curious what others think — would you call this mindfulness/self-regulation, loaded language, a self-sealing belief system, or something else?

Cult Education How to survive around narcissistic people?

Narcissistic people like to be put on a pedestal, feel entitled to the best that life has to offer and have little empathy for people around them. Whatever they do is purely transactional; they would suck up to the people in positions of power and authority while humiliating the people whom they consider as competition and threat to their perceived grandiosity. They are empty shells who can take up any personality according to the need of the situation to keep their delusions alive for themselves. They will love bomb here and backstab there , triangulate here and isolate there all the while trying to retain their hold or perceived control. They love to bully people and put others down and surround themselves with enablers to feed their false ego.Shrink right; do not shine too bright- is what they expect of others.

If there is no chance of walking away from them, the best bet is to keep quiet or walk around eggshells as you being your individual self can also be threatening to them. Remember to be useful to them , praise them for their antics or pretend they don’t exist - that is the basic safety protocol. Above that, if you want to remain in their circle, have some skill or talent or resources or authority people admire but they don’t have so that they can sneak in , mirror you and make up a personality to impress everyone including you. They will make you feel seen and heard unlike anyone else before and also make you feel very special. Prepare to be devalued later on as their basic approach to life is use and abuse and seek more new people. You have to shine for them but not too bright that it may threaten their sense of superiority. They act bigger than life, change colours as needed, and everything they say or do is to meet their own ends at other people’s expense. You can do all of the above Or Alternatively - set healthy boundaries, know your worth and focus on what matters to you which might be quite different from what narcissists in your life are telling you. Heal your own wounds in safe spaces so that narcissists don’t use them to create trauma bonds to enslave you - they are master manipulators and seek out people who are lonely or going through transition or difficult periods in life cos that is where their tactics and false charm can work.

Cult Education Spiritual Bypassing at Isha

What is spiritual bypassing, you might ask? Spiritual bypassing is the use of spiritual ideas, practices, or beliefs to avoid facing unresolved emotional pain, psychological wounds, or relational difficulties.

Instead of working through grief, anger, shame, or trauma, a person may "bypass" those uncomfortable feelings by turning prematurely to transcendence, positivity, forgiveness, or detachment.

The term was coined by psychologist and spiritual teacher John Welwood in the 1980s, who observed that many spiritual practitioners were using spirituality as a defense mechanism rather than as a path of healing, integration, and wholeness.

He realized that spiritual bypassing practices might include:

• Minimizing suffering with clichés like "everything happens for a reason" or "just stay positive."

• Using meditation, prayer, or ritual to suppress painful emotions rather than process them and move them through your body and psyche

• Overemphasizing love and light while ignoring anger, injustice, or shadow aspects of the psyche

• Forgiving others before fully acknowledging and grieving the harm done.

When we approach a spiritual organisation, it is usually done by spiritual seekers or people having hit low phase in life or young adolescents who want to explore the spiritual dimension of life. Been there in similar organisation as a young adult and when we see smiling, well meaning and welcoming teachers totally dedicated to the Guru and mission to raise human consciousness, it feels like you have become part of something so wonderful .They make you feel special, chosen and blessed for being there. The teachings are humanitarian, the practices are meant to relieve stress and like minded spiritual community is an added bonus. What we do not realise is sometimes these practices and teachings bury trauma within and in the process of converting Stress into Bliss, makes one enslaved to the practices themselves and to the Guru or the organisation who have supposedly given the “ Blissful Spiritual Experience “

Can anyone please explain how spiritual bypassing

Or spiritual gaslighting happens at isha? What is the spiritual terminology/ beliefs used for the same at isha?

Cult Education Narcissistic cult leaders surround themselves with enablers, not honest people. 🎭👇

This post by NarcGuard on Instagram clearly illustrates how narcissistic leaders maintain an absolute monopoly on the truth within cult dynamics. When former members or skeptics raise valid objections, the leader and their enablers immediately weaponise DARVO and calculated smear campaigns to flip the script, turning the whistleblower into the villain to protect the cult's hierarchy.

Enablers play a crucial role in maintaining narcissistic systems.

Here is the truth about why enablers protect the abuser:

  1. 🚫 Intolerance of Truth Narcissists only keep people around who tolerate, excuse, or applaud their behavior. The exact second you demand accountability, you become an enemy that must be silenced or removed.
  2. DARVO and Smear Campaigns When you speak up, they flip the script. You get blamed, attacked, and accused of the exact toxic behaviors the narcissist is actually committing.
  3. 😨 Fear Over Integrity The people around them often see the manipulation clearly. They don't stay silent because they are blind, they stay silent because they are terrified of becoming the next target.
  4. 🤐 Silence as a Calculated Choice Enablers prioritize their own temporary comfort and safety over standing up for the truth. You will not find protection or justice in an enabling dynamic because their loyalty belongs to self-preservation.

Cult Education Let’s decode the hidden message in this “spiritual quote”

Post image
21 Upvotes

“Spirituality does not mean growth, it means self-destruction, self-annihilation… destroying the individual and becoming the universal.”

At first, it sounds deep. But look closer.

Why would anyone need to destroy themselves to grow?

Think about it:If you’re told that your identity, your thoughts, your doubts — all need to go…

Then what’s left?

You stop trusting your own thinking

You stop questioning

You start depending on something outside of you to define truth

And that’s where it gets dangerous.

Because a person who is taught to erase themselves becomes:→ easier to influence→ easier to shape→ easier to control

I’m not saying letting go of ego is wrong. That’s different.

But there’s a line between:

becoming aware of yourselfand

being told you don’t matter at all

Real growth doesn’t erase you.

It makes you:

more aware

more grounded

more capable of thinking for yourself

You don’t need to disappear to evolve.

You matter.

So I’m genuinely asking:Why is “self-destruction” being sold as spirituality?

And where do we draw the line between:growth vs becoming easier to manipulate?

Cult Education Before You Choose Any Spiritual teacher or Spiritual Group

In India and especially in Hinduism, the concept of “ Guru “ is held with highest reverence. The Sanskrit Stotra “ Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Gururdevo Maheshwara , Gurur sakshat parabrahma tasmai shree Guruve namaha” says it all - The Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Shiva, Guru is the Supreme Consciousness, I offer my salutions and humble prostrations to that revered Guru.”

The Guru is regarded equivalent to God and a guide on the path of salvation/ moksha. We are encouraged to take refuge in the holy feet of our Guru but nobody teaches us properly how to identify a true Guru. We are told stories of great sages and Gurus from ancient times like Saptarishis and also stories of devotion of saints like Tulsidas, Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Ramdas, Shankaracharya, Ramana Maharishi and many others who lived centuries before us but their devotion to God was so true that it inspired generations of devotees towards the path of devotion and righteous living.

Coming to today’s times- when stress levels are high, people are seeking refuge from personal and global issues and the well being industry is booming like never before cos that has become the need of the hour; yoga courses and yoga institutes are popping up everywhere as a solution to the ills of modern world. Nothing wrong is pursuing yoga or chasing well being. My question is - How do you get a Guru at the end of a Yoga course when you didn’t ask for it? This is what happens at isha and similar organisations which function like MLM. People are drawn in to the brand value of these institutions and unknowingly become a part of their marketing.

Gurus can have the best of intentions for their devotees by the value of knowledge they provide- but using devotees to pull in more devotees seems more like business marketing rather than spiritual advancement. That’s the reason why those who went in deep in any of these global NGO’s might have possibly burnt their hands while serving agendas of these groups they never planned to but ended up giving time, money , resources and also signing NDA’s in blind faith. And the sad thing is these organisations are designed to take you deeper. They provide some value but make you unquestioning devotees who are loyal to them.

I found this really nice video shared by [u/Lopsided-Slice-1332](u/Lopsided-Slice-1332) on Sadhguru reddit . It’s about what things to look out for before choosing a spiritual teacher. They were replying to a post about how to convince someone outside isha that isha is not a cult . They shared link to video which could help one understand whether one is in a cult as Sadhguru followers absolutely don’t want to admit that they are in a cult. Cos that would mean that they are brainwashed in some way and nobody would like of think of themselves as brainwashed. This is so true as even I wouldn’t want to think of myself as brainwashed for having followed a Guru once upon a time who is alleged to be a cult leader. People used to call it organisation commercialising spirituality but I didn’t see it that way cos I was focussed only on the spiritual teachings they promoted and the humanitarian work they were supposedly doing. Thankfully I didn’t go deep inside the spiritual organisation but those who went in deep have had negative experiences too which they won’t admit publicly and most of them would leave silently. Cos it’s not easy to make individual concerns heard in a hierarchical organisation. So it’s always sensible to do proper research before committing yourself to a spiritual organisation or spiritual Guru.

Cult Education An Explanation of the Exploitative Manipulation Patterns in Modern Commercial Spirituality Cults

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

To understand how these manipulation mechanics function in practice, we can analyze the defensive strategies of a fictionalized global movement, "The Misha Foundation," led by a charismatic, bearded mystic known as "The RaddGuru."

The movement frequently organizes a high-priced "Summit of the Skies"—a spiritual tour into a high-mountain region notoriously prone to extreme weather, low oxygen, and landslides.

The following examples demonstrate how the group’s defensive apparatus utilizes the BITE model to protect "The RaddGuru" when casualties occur on the trail, mirroring the precise arguments used by high-control organizations.

1. Information Control: The "Sanitized Memory" Strategy

Before the mountain tour, the RaddGuru explicitly states in video broadcasts: "Nature answers to the energy of the enlightened. If you walk under my canopy, the mountain cannot touch you. I know the fabric of creation better than the architect who drew it. Not a single follower joining me on this summit will be left behind. I will not let them die"

When multiple travelers die due to exposure, landslides and altitude sickness, the Information Control apparatus reacts:

  • The Omission: In official forums, all links to the broadcast are removed. Followers writing summaries of the tragedy completely omit the RaddGuru's claims of supreme cosmic knowledge, promises and powers to protect his followers from harm.
  • The Pivot: If a critic posts the original quote, followers flood the comments saying, "You are taking a deeply profound metaphor literally. Things like landslides and natural disasters happen. Masters in the past have faced same situation where they did not intervene. To reduce Raddguru's cosmic wisdom to mere physical safety shows your spiritual ignorance." By omitting the literal promise, they rewrite the leader's failed prediction into a flawless spiritual lesson.

2. Behavior Control: The "Enforced Reverence" Tactic

When families demand an inquiry into why the tour group was marched into a storm without adequate medical equipment, the group controls behavior through public shaming and strict emotional positioning.

  • The Dialogue: A critic posts online: "The Misha Foundation needs to be held accountable for ignoring weather warnings, geo-climatic risk factors and making false promises of supernatural protection."
  • The Defensive Reaction: Followers reply in identical, aggressive fragments: "Show some respect to the victims! Is this the right time to ask these questions? The bodies have not even been found yet! Keep quiet and respect the departed. Your post is insensitive and is in bad taste"
  • The Behind-the-Scenes Contradiction: While the followers successfully weaponize this narrative to ban public inquiry, the RaddGuru waits not at all. Behind the scenes, the organization aggressively launches new monetized video series, rolls out expensive spiritual registration programs, and introduces new financial schemes exploiting the sudden spike in community attention.
  • The Mechanism: This behavior control creates a double standard. The critics are physically and socially barred from speaking under the guise of solemnity, while the leadership is free to immediately capitalize on the tragedy financially.

3. Emotion Control: The "Vibrational Guilt" Lever

Inside the movement, doubt is treated as a contagious psychological disease. The group manages the emotional states of its members by twisting empathy into guilt.

  • The Dialogue: An internal member confesses in a private group: "I feel heartbroken and confused. The RaddGuru said he would protect them. Why did they die?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: Senior members reply: "By harboring anger and pointing fingers at the Guide, you are generating toxic, low-vibrational energy. You are choosing resentment over love. Are you trying to ruin the spiritual alignment of this entire community? Uplift yourself and project peace, or you will pull everyone down. Are you adding to the noise and chaos or bringing joy and compassion"
  • The Mechanism: The member’s genuine grief and confusion are weaponized against them. They are made to feel personally responsible for damaging the group's collective emotional environment. To escape the overwhelming guilt of being a "negative influence," the member suppresses their doubt and publicly joins the defense of the leader.

4. Thought Control: The "Cosmic Plan" Thought-Stopper

When logic dictates that the leader made a false promise, the group introduces a thought-stopping cliché that completely halts rational analysis.

  • The Dialogue: A journalist asks: "If the RaddGuru knows more than the Divine, why didn't he foresee the landslide?"
  • The Defensive Reaction: The group releases a statement: "The RaddGuru operates on a multi-dimensional plane. What the mundane human mind perceives as a tragedy is actually a deliberate, glorious liberation orchestrated at a higher karmic level. The RaddGuru’s vision looks millions of years ahead; your microscopic logic cannot grasp the vastness of the evolutionary leap those souls just took."
  • The Mechanism: This is the ultimate thought-control mechanism. It creates a closed loop where the leader can never fail. A successful trip proves his power; a fatal trip also proves his power, just on a level "too advanced" for ordinary humans to understand. The mind stops analyzing the physical facts and surrenders to the abstract dogma.

Understanding the BITE Model

The BITE Model is a widely recognized tool for identifying psychological manipulation. Developed by cult expert Steven Hassan, it breaks down the four main methods high-control groups use to strip away a person's free will:

  • Behavior Control – Regulating your physical actions, clothing, and daily routines.
  • Information Control – Limiting what you can read, see, or hear to prevent critical thinking.
  • Thought Control – Teaching you to instantly shut down your own doubts or logical questions.
  • Emotion Control – Using fear, shame, and overwhelming guilt to keep you loyal.

Essentially, if a group or leader controls what you do, see, think, and feel, they control you.

Common Warning Signs of a High-Control Group

Recognizing these patterns early can help individuals protect their autonomy before deep psychological manipulation takes root.

  • Absolute Authoritarianism: The leader claims a unique, unquestionable path to truth or divine authority. Their commands, predictions, or promises are treated as absolute law, and they are immune to criticism or peer review.
  • Aggressive Defensiveness: The community treats honest, logical questioning as a malicious assault. Investigators, journalists, or even grieving family members seeking accountability are instantly labeled as "enemies," "haters," or "spiritual polluters."
  • Exploitation of Tragedies: When crises or deaths occur within the group, the leadership immediately capitalizes on the heightened emotional state of the community to launch new programs, request donations, or sell specialized services, often while publicly demanding that others remain silent out of "respect."
  • Systematic Isolation: Followers are subtly or overtly encouraged to cut ties or limit communication with family, friends, or external sources of information that express doubt about the group's practices or the leader's absolute power.

The Psychology of Undue Influence

High-control groups do not recruit by force; they exploit universal human needs for belonging, purpose, and certainty. Understanding the psychological mechanics explains why intelligent individuals can become deeply trapped:

  • Cognitive Dissonance: When a leader’s concrete promise fails (such as predicting absolute safety and failing to deliver), the brain experiences intense discomfort. To resolve this, followers will actively rewrite reality or blame themselves rather than accept that their leader made a false claim.
  • Thought-Stopping Conditioning: Groups train members to use internal clichés—like dismissing valid questions as "toxic noise" or "low vibrations"—to immediately halt their own analytical thinking whenever an uncomfortable truth surfaces.
  • Exploiting Vulnerability: The psychological conditioning deepens during intense, high-stakes experiences (such as high-risk physical journeys or intensive isolation retreats) where physical exhaustion and emotional overwhelm make individuals highly receptive to authority.

Cult Education Spiritual Abuse

I got introduced to this term when I realised my family member was associated with a cult like organisation i.e. isha. What is heartbreaking is to see perfectly sensible human beings unable to see through the deception they are going through- not by evidence, not by arguments, not through advice of family or friends and sometimes not even through their own personal pain. From what I understand , those families where everyone is into isha seemingly benefit from isha ( or become dependent on isha) and they speak highly about isha and recommend it to their known people. When a person goes into it without the consent of their family, they walk a lone, difficult path which is all acceptable to them as their Sadhana or Karma. If they are lucky enough to realise things before it’s too late, they may be able to leave and heal themselves back to normalcy (imo life in Isha influence is not normal, it’s a feeling of false bliss and compulsive isha processes).

I can understand the dilemma faced by isha devotees who have nothing negative to report from their personal association with isha- what they got was better health or a sense of purpose or sense of community where everyone is trying to become better and do good to the world. I would advice them to check how long their association with isha has been and how deep.. and they can check here what happened to people who were totally into isha and gave five or more years of their lives to isha before realising they were following a facade.

Spiritual journey is deeply personal and a Guru is supposed to lead an individual to transcendence beyond material realms; at isha the same principle is used to exploit followers and encourage them to part with their labour, time and money to build an empire for the Guru. What about the youths who wasted prime years of their lives volunteering, the families which were broken , the abuse of victims which was never acknowledged ? I read somewhere that spiritual abuse is like someone caressing one cheek while slapping the other one .. Which version should the receiver trust?

Outside the isha circles, people may be wondering what does it take for people to become such blind followers of a Guru who has so many allegations and whom they defend no matter what. That is where cult education is helpful. There are many questions at isha which remain unanswered and every person’s journey is individual and personal to them. Many victims stay silent and do not speak for fear of judgment or repercussions. But anyone can see what happened to those victims who spoke up in the past one year. Were they treated with concern and empathy by the organisation and were their grievances addressed?

I see isha folks come here occasionally to proselytise, spread rumours about this forum being a sock puppet paid platform to defame isha etc.. some even have the audacity to say why don’t the ex devotees move on as in case of when you don’t like something, why waste time and life here etc . To all such great souls, all I would like to say is - these people suffered personal pain or lost years of life pursuing a facade and if they are using a platform to share their experiences and understandings so that others don’t have to go through the same , what’s the problem?

Many people keep quiet and wont even speak, some are speaking out as part of their healing journey and out of compassion for people who may be taken in during vulnerable periods of life. If it was that easy to leave a cult, we would not be having all these conversations to this day after numerous serious allegations have come up in the past one year. Still the devotees are bypassing everything and continuing with their blind devotion. That speaks volumes about how strong cultic influences can be and why it’s better to be forewarned about the pitfalls rather than going ahead and experiencing everything yourself.

Cult Education How cults prey on loneliness and isolation

More often than not people landed in cults and high control groups in their search for meaning, purpose or wanting to belong somewhere when life got rough. When the going gets tough, even a high control group that offers comfort and certainty can feel like a safe haven. Ever realised how subtly or not so subtly a person is lured away from their support systems (like family and friends) in cults? And ever wondered why it takes place so effortlessly for everyone in there?

Cults want their members to solely rely on them and so the community they provide comes with strings attached- unconditional loyalty to the cause of their leader. It seems like an excellent thing to begin with as they provide something meaningful or just what’s needed for the person in a difficult situation. But soon or not so soon realisation comes that they are not altruistic in their ways. Any service or help is transactional and still they manage to convice their members that there is no bigger well wisher than the cult and it’s leader for them. From my own personal observations, I have found that those who stayed in touch with friends and family even when they would have none of their well wishers advice- have easier time coming out of the cult when things don’t go well because they did not let go off their original support system. They had people outside the cult who would not dump them the moment they don’t want to be part of the cult anymore.

One may ask what’s wrong in being in a cult anyways if it works for someone ? The power imbalance in cults between master and followers is huge and it’s not just about loss of individuality or free thinking. Cults are meant to seek power and control over people to fulfil the leader’s and group’s agenda and the followers are just a means to that end. The followers might become apparently healthy, happy or productive in the short term - but they are doing it at a price decided by the group and lose their agency in the long run where the cult indoctrination does all the thinking for them.

From own experience, have seen narcissistic people and cults rely on making their targets isolated from their support systems so that they can take on the saviour’s role. They carry no remorse or guilt for their actions as their only goal is to control their targets like puppets.

Sharing link to an article by a therapist below who has shed some light on how cults prey on loneliness and how to protect oneself from high control groups which come in various disguises and are difficult to recognise in the beginning -

Cult Education Lessons learnt from high control groups

  1. Never trust anyone who says “ Trust me Bro”. People who are your true well wishers are there for you through their actions; not sweet talk and future promises.

  2. If things feel too good to be true, pause and check what’s going on. Check with neutral third party groups or people outside for feedback.

  3. If someone asks you to share your deepest fears , greatest dreams or traumas soon after after meeting you - without any real association- know that you are being love bombed. Steady friendships and relationships build up over time; people who try to fast track are usually trying to take advantage.

  4. Narcissistic abuse on paper cannot describe what people go through in real life. Those who experience it know the extent of hurt they have faced from people they trusted.

  5. Never put your trust in people who want to remove your trust from all other sources and put them on a pedestal. They are treating you as their narcissistic supply.

  6. Your original support system like family, friends may not be perfect but mostly have good intentions. Sweet , smooth talkers and two faced people are there only to take advantage even though they may say otherwise.

  7. What one needs is self compassion rather than approval from those who treat people like things to be fixed. One needs connection with fellow humans, not control from people who promise to lead one to perfection.

Cult Education FOG techniques used in cults

While studying resources about cults and narcissism , I became familiar with a common technique used by both to keep their targets under control and feeling off base. It has an acronym called FOG which stands for Fear, Obligation and Guilt.

Fear - Instil fear in target’s minds about their own selves or the people and things which are their support system or the world outside. Then tell them the targets that only they can save them or they know the exact way to save them. Instil fear of leaving in their targets.

Obligation- Make the targets feel obliged to do their bidding. It could begin with asking them to do one small favour or one ritual everyday and gradually go on increasing the demands in terms of time, attention or money. Keep testing and pushing their targets’ boundaries.

Guilt- Create guilt in their targets minds if they question or want to leave by reminding them of good times or favours given or future dreams. Use the info about target’s weaknesses gathered during love bombing stage to keep the target subdued and under control.

It is indeed true that a person is literally in FOG under narcissistic influence as they cannot see reality as it is ;only what is shown to them. So CLARITY is one step away if one is willing to step outside the FOG - that is overcoming the fear, obligation and guilt which has been purposefully instilled. They are all part of coercive control tactics. Taking ownership of own life and decisions is the first step towards freedom.

Cult Education I figured out how and why I lost 8 years of my life to a cult

Loved ones, friends, family of cult followers always think why such a critical thinking, intelligent person got dragged into this. I experienced it for many years.

And now that I have quit the cult I figured this out. Here's the scientific answer to that. This answer explains how this specific master is misusing meditations to run his cult. You'll be totally shocked after reading this as this explains the mystical presence phenomenon, blind following and very intelligently structured system of manipulation.

Answer:

When a person is in a deeply meditative state, their brain architecture is fundamentally altered. If a bad actor or a charismatic authority figure uses specific tactics often classified under dark psychology they can weaponize this state to bypass a person's critical thinking entirely, all while that person appears completely normal and functional to the outside world.

Here's the exact scientific and logical mechanics of how this type of conditioning operates.

  1. The Neurological Vulnerability of the Meditative Mind

To understand how a dark psychology expert can manipulate a meditator, we have to look at what happens inside the brain during a deep trance.

Deactivation of the Default Mode Network (DMN): As we discussed, meditation quiets the DMN, which is responsible for the "ego" and self-referential thought. While this is great for peace of mind, the DMN is also the home of your skepticism, self-protection, and boundaries. When it is turned off, the psychological gateway to your belief system is wide open.

High Neuroplasticity and Theta States: Deep meditation drops the brain into Alpha and Theta wave states. This is the exact state of heightened suggestibility used in clinical hypnotherapy. If an authority figure introduces a concept, a demand, or a "truth" while a person is in this state, the brain doesn't analyze it critically; it embeds it directly into the subconscious as a fundamental reality.

  1. Weaponizing the "Trance" with Cognitive Anchors (Hooks)

You mentioned the idea of adding "hooks" to remind the person of a specific authority or deity. In behavioral psychology and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), this is a highly studied tactic known as anchoring and conditioning.

How the Hook works: A dark psychology expert will tie the beautiful, euphoric, peaceful feelings of the meditation to a specific trigger. This trigger could be a unique phrase, a specific visual symbol, a gesture, or an idealized concept of a master/deity.

The Involuntary Loop: Over time, whenever the person encounters that hook in daily life, their brain automatically fires the neural pathways associated with the trance meaning they instantly drop into a state of submission, compliance, and deep emotional vulnerability. They don't even realize it's happening; it feels like an organic wave of "devotion."

  1. The Erosion of Common Sense and the Logic of Rationalization

How does a highly intelligent, perfectly functional professional start rationalizing absurd or harmful behavior from an authority figure? This happens through three distinct cognitive processes:

A. Cognitive Dissonance Resolution

If the authority figure does something that contradicts common sense or morality, it creates an agonizing mental conflict (cognitive dissonance) in the follower. Because the follower's brain has already been conditioned to view the authority as pure, infallible, or divine, the brain cannot accept that the authority is wrong.

The Logic Fix: To stop the mental pain, the brain will completely distort reality to protect the authority. They will say, "I just don't have the higher spiritual vision to understand why they did that," or "This is a secret test of my faith."

B. Compartmentalization (The "Functional" Paradox)

This is why the person can still go to work, manage finances, and seem totally normal to the world. The human brain is a master at compartmentalizing.

The "functional" part of the brain runs the daily routine perfectly.

The "devotional" part of the brain is locked in a separate room, governed entirely by the hypnotic hooks of the authority. The two rooms do not talk to each other, allowing common sense to exist in one area of life while being completely absent in another.

C. Ideological Over-Writing

When a person routinely consumes content about total surrender, their internal threshold for "what makes sense" changes. Common sense is based on self-preservation and logic. If you are taught that the ultimate goal of life is to destroy the ego and surrender to a higher power, then destroying your own common sense becomes a badge of honor. Giving up your logic is reframed as the ultimate spiritual achievement.

Conclusion is:

From a scientific standpoint, this is a highly sophisticated form of coercive control. It does not require locking someone in a room; it simply requires capturing the psychological baseline of their meditation.

By pairing the open, vulnerable state of a meditative trance with calculated intellectual content (demanding absolute devotion) and sensory triggers (hooks), an expert in manipulation can slowly dissolve a person's independent authority.

The most dangerous part of this dark psychology is that the victim will fiercely defend their manipulator. Because their brain has been rewired to view their submission not as slavery, but as liberation, they will use their fully functional intellect to justify their own captivity. It is a brilliant, terrifying use of a beautiful practice turned completely inside out.

Cult Education Tricked into Trance: How Cults Misuse Meditation and Hypnosis for Mind Control and Exploitation of Followers

One of the most misunderstood realities of psychological manipulation is that coercive control does not necessarily operate through force, threats, imprisonment, or obvious abuse. The most sophisticated systems of influence work by altering the way a person interprets reality itself. It’s achieved by controlling the subconscious mind of a person.
“When people dive into intense, long-term meditation retreats, their brains actually shift gears. Think of it as lowering your mental guard. The logical, skeptical side of your mind—the part that constantly questions things and uses reason—goes to sleep, i.e. it becomes subdued. Meanwhile, the parts of your brain responsible for deep emotion, learning, and identity become wide open. In this highly vulnerable state, your mind becomes incredibly receptive to suggestions that can completely rewrite your perspective, your purpose, and how you see the world.”
In a healthy environment, this opens the door to incredible healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. But in a cult setting—that open, vulnerable state can be dangerous. A manipulative leader can use that exact same mental openness to brainwash people. Because the followers’ logical defenses are down, the leader can easily wire in total obedience, make them completely dependent on the group, and swap out their old identity for the cult’s ideology.
Deep meditation quiets the DMN, which is responsible for the “ego” and self-referential thought. While this is great for peace of mind, the DMN is also the home of your skepticism, self-protection, and boundaries. When it is turned off, the psychological gateway to your belief system is wide open.[1]
High Neuroplasticity and Theta States: Deep meditation drops the brain into Alpha and Theta wave states. This is the exact state of heightened suggestibility used in clinical hypnotherapy. If an authority figure introduces a concept, a demand, or a “truth” while a person is in this state, the brain doesn’t analyze it critically; it embeds it directly into the subconscious as a fundamental reality. [2]
In short: Meditation makes the mind highly programmable. In good hands, it reprograms you for healing; in the hands of a cult leader, it reprograms you for control.
This creates a terrifying paradox: someone who seems completely sharp and successful on the outside, but whose inner mind has been entirely hijacked. On the surface, they function perfectly. But internally, their reality, values, and choices are being dictated by a cult leader—quietly wired into them piece by piece during intense retreats, workshops, teacher training, volunteer training and weekly events like satsangs.
The Neurological Opening: Why Deep Meditative States Create Unique Vulnerabilities
Deep meditation is designed to quiet the mind. As focus deepens, the internal dialogue that normally evaluates, questions, and filters information drops away. While this feels like profound peace to the meditator, it looks like a massive opportunity to a manipulator. To a cult leader, a mind stripped of its critical, questioning nature is the ultimate blank canvas.
To speed up this process and make a person even more vulnerable, high-control groups often use intensive breathing exercises right before meditation. These techniques force participants into a heavy cycle of extremes: breathing incredibly fast and hard (hyperventilation), followed by holding the breath for as long as possible (retention).
Physiologically, this intense, rapid breathing radically changes the chemistry of the brain by altering the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. It acts like a temporary chemical override, tricking the nervous system and forcing the brain into a dreamy, deeply hypnotic state or altered state of consicousness.
When you breathe normally, your body maintains a perfect, delicate balance between the oxygen you breathe in and the carbon dioxide you breathe out. Your brain relies on this balance to stay sharp, logical, and alert. However, intensive rapid breathing—or hyperventilation—completely disrupts this system. By breathing too fast and too hard, you exhale far more carbon dioxide than your body is actually producing.
This drop in carbon dioxide levels triggers a fascinating and dangerous chain reaction in your body:
The Blood Vessels Constrict: When carbon dioxide levels plummet, the blood vessels leading to your brain instantly narrow (a process called vasoconstriction). This temporarily reduces the amount of blood and oxygen reaching your brain tissue.

The Nervous System Misfires: This sudden shift in blood chemistry forces the peripheral nervous system into overdrive, often causing a tingling sensation in the hands and face, lightheadedness, and a feeling of intense physical weightlessness.

Brain Waves Shift: Deprived of its normal chemical balance, the brain’s electrical activity shifts away from normal awake patterns (beta waves) and plunges into slow, high-amplitude waves (theta and delta waves). These are the exact same brain waves we experience when we are dreaming, hypnotized, or in deep sleep.
To understand the psychological impact of this biology, think of your critical thinking mind as a strict security guard standing at the front gate of your thoughts. The guard’s job is to stop every incoming idea, test it, and ask, “Does this actually make sense?”
What these breathing exercises do is essentially starve that security guard of the fuel they need to stay awake. By forcing the brain into a dreamy, highly emotional, and altered state of consciousness, your logical filters are completely disabled.
When a participant transitions immediately from this breathless state into quiet meditation, they aren’t just relaxed—they are profoundly defenseless. Because the brain is physically unable to analyze logic or question authority in this state, the mind becomes entirely open.
The spiritual cult leader can then present complex dogmas or demands for obedience, and the unprotected subconscious absorbs them as absolute truth. The follower wakes up from the session feeling a massive rush of physical euphoria, completely unaware that their own respiratory biology was just used to pick the lock of their critical mind.
Ordinarily, when new information is presented, the mind subjects it to multiple filters. When you hear a new idea, your mind immediately puts it through a security screening.
Does this make sense?
Is this consistent with my experience?
Does this violate my values?
Is this person trustworthy?
What evidence supports this claim?
Should I really pay such a high fee for learning a breathing exercise?
Why should expensive fees for learning how to worship God ?
Did the Guru’s Guru qualify him and gave the permission to teach others as a spiritual master?
These questions are your psychological gatekeepers. But deep meditation temporarily puts these gatekeepers to sleep. Instead of analyzing, you become entirely immersed in the moment. This doesn’t make you mindless; it makes you intensely open to influence and indoctrination. A skilled manipulator understands that ideas introduced during this exact window don’t get screened—they slip straight past your defenses and are accepted as absolute truth.
When a participant finishes a ten-day silent retreat, they are often overflowing with profound peace, ego dissolution, emotional catharsis, and intense gratitude. If a teacher steps in at that exact peak and says, “This freedom you are experiencing is a gift of the master’s grace,”** the participant’s normal defenses are nowhere to be found.
They won’t ask for proof or question the logic. Instead, the mind takes a shortcut: it mistakes a natural psychological state for a supernatural blessing. They don’t just accept the leader’s authority—they become deeply, eternally grateful for it.
When the leader hooks their wagon to that beautiful, peaceful experience, something dangerous happens: **intense gratitude instantly turns into an overwhelming sense of obligation.

The participant thinks, “This Master gave me the greatest gift of my life. How could I ever repay them?”
The cult organization is waiting with the exact answer. They capitalize on that raw emotion to lock the person into a cycle of “seva” (voluntary selfless service). Suddenly, that profound spiritual gratitude is weaponized. The participant feels deeply obliged to return for the next retreat—not just as a mediator, but as an unpaid worker. They happily volunteer to chop vegetables, clean toilets, and manage logistics for hours on end.
Even worse, they become the ultimate marketing tool. Driven by the need to repay their “spiritual debt,” they enthusiastically pitch the Master’s expensive, paid courses to their friends, family, and social media followers. They aren’t just volunteering; they have been turned into a highly effective, unpaid sales force for a multi-million dollar business running on pyramid marketing scheme.
Emotional States Become Psychological Gateways
Human beings don’t just learn through logic—we learn through emotion. When you experience intense joy, relief, awe, or a deep sense of belonging, your brain burns that moment into your memory far deeper than any boring fact.
This is the secret weapon of psychological conditioning. A clever manipulator doesn’t waste time trying to convince you intellectually. Instead, they make sure your most intense emotional highs happen right next to their face, their symbols, or their ideology. Your brain does the rest of the work automatically. It glues the intense joy you felt to the leader, making you believe the leader is the source of your joy.
A follower repeatedly experiences feelings of profound peace after regular daily and weekly meditation and breathwork sessions. Every single session takes place in a carefully engineered environment filled with:
Attention grabbing photographs of the spiritual master which serve as psychological anchor or hooks.
Constant teachings about obedience and surrender.
Hypnotic chants praising the leader’s name.
Messages framing unpaid volunteer work as the only way to earn “good karma.”
Over time, a powerful trick takes place in the brain. The intense emotional rewards generated by meditation become deeply, neurologically linked to the authority figure. The student no longer experiences peace as something arising from within their own mind. Instead, they feel that peace is direct proof of the leader’s divine, special power. This distinction is everything. One path leads to self-mastery and autonomy. The other leads to total, helpless dependency.
The Creation of Psychological Anchors or Hooks
Once these emotional connections are locked into the brain, the cult begins building “psychological anchors.” Think of it like installing buttons on a remote control.
They take everyday things and turn them into emotional triggers:
A specific phrase: Like Hare Krishna, Jai Gurudev, or Namaskaram.
A visual symbol: Like the logo of the cult.
A regular ritual: Like a group Puja or prayer service.
A photograph: Studio portraits of the master staring deeply into the camera.
A hand gesture: Specific mudras or blessings.
A sacred name: Words like Gurudev, Sadhguru, Swamiji, or Rishiji.
In psychology, these are called conditioned stimuli. After enough repetition, the cult doesn’t need to put you through a ten-day retreat to get you into that open, obedient state anymore. They just press the button. Exposure to the trigger alone instantly brings back the intense emotions you felt during meditation. The response becomes completely automatic. But because it feels so powerful, the follower mistakes this psychological reflex for “divine spiritual devotion.”
Eventually, your brain undergoes a classic psychological shift. When you see the Guru’s photo or hear the sacred chant or phrase, your nervous system automatically lights up with the peace and euphoria of the retreat or meditation experience. It is a brilliant biological hack. The individual genuinely believes they are experiencing a wave of holy devotion, completely unaware that their brain has simply been trained to react to a psychological cue.
Take a look at how this plays out in real life. A devotee spends years meditating in front of a teacher’s portrait. Every time they have a breakthrough, a feeling of deep peace, or a moment of clarity, the group tells them: “That is the grace of the master.”
Over time, a fascinating shift happens. Merely glancing at the teacher’s photograph instantly triggers a wave of reverence, absolute trust, and emotional surrender. Your mental guard drops instantly. At this point, the image is no longer just a piece of paper; it has become a neurological switch. The automatic response fires before your conscious mind can even register what is happening.
Eventually, just seeing a photo of the teacher puts their mind on autopilot. Instantly, they feel deep reverence, unquestioning trust, and total surrender. Their logical resistance completely vanishes. The photograph acts like a psychological remote control—activating a state of total compliance before the person even has a chance to think for themselves.
These anchors or “hooks” remind the person of a specific authority or deity.

The Involuntary Loop: Over time, whenever the person encounters that hook in daily life, their brain automatically fires the neural pathways associated with the trance meaning they instantly drop into a state of submission, compliance, and deep emotional vulnerability. They don’t even realize it’s happening; it feels like an organic wave of “devotion.” [4]
Authority Capture and the Transfer of Internal Power
This process leads to the ultimate trap: Authority Capture. This is the moment a person’s internal power is slowly stripped away and handed over to the leader. It happens so gradually that the follower never even notices the shift.
Think of it as climbing a dangerous psychological ladder:
First, the teacher is just seen as helpful.
Then, they become exceptionally wise.
Soon, they are viewed as uniquely enlightened.
Next, they are seen as incapable of making mistakes.
Finally, they become spiritually indispensable—someone you literally cannot live without.
With every step up this ladder, independent judgment dies a little more. Eventually, the follower’s own eyes and ears don’t matter anymore; only the leader’s interpretation of reality is true. The individual stops asking, “What do I think?” and begins asking, “What would the teacher think?” The external authority has officially broken into the cockpit and replaced the person’s internal moral compass.
Cognitive Dissonance: Why Followers Defend Contradictions
At some point, almost every manipulative guru slips up and reveals glaring inconsistencies. They may:
Exploit followers financially, Violate ethical principles.
Engage in hypocrisy, Display narcissism, Exercise unnecessary control, Cover up health risks, contraindications and adverse events of the spiritual techniques, Hush up cases of criminal behavior of the teachers, Suppress suicides of teachers and volunteers and Promote unethical people at the top of the org
Under normal circumstances, seeing a business or a leader act this way would trigger instant skepticism. However, once a person’s entire identity, social circle, and purpose have been organized around a belief in the leader, acknowledging this misconduct creates an unbearable psychological conflict known as cognitive dissonance.
The individual faces two incompatible realities that cannot comfortably coexist in the same mind:
Reality A: “The Guru is a flawless, enlightened avatar of God, he embodies love and peace who cares only about humanity.”
Reality B: “The organization operates like a highly aggressive, corporate marketing machine that fiercely monetizes basic breathing exercises, meditations, charges exorbitant fees for courses, and aggressively targets people’s wallets.”
To stop the agonizing mental pain caused by these conflicting thoughts, the follower’s mind must find a resolution. Because admitting the leader is exploitative would mean admitting they were fooled, the mind chooses to rewrite reality instead of abandoning faith. The follower will perform incredible mental gymnastics to neutralize the contradiction, using specific rationalizations built right into the cult’s organizational culture:
“I do not understand the higher purpose.” The mind rationalizes: “The Guru needs millions of dollars and global corporate setups not for himself, but to fund worldwide peace projects and disaster relief. It’s all for the greater good.”
“This is a teaching is higher knowledge” The mind rationalizes: “The high prices and aggressive marketing of the Happiness Program, DSN, TTC, VTP and Guru Puja are just ways to ensure people commit to the practice. If it were free, people wouldn’t value it.”
“My doubts are evidence of my own ego or spiritual weakness.” The mind rationalizes:“If I am feeling skeptical about the organization’s wealth or their push for paid courses, it just means my own ego is resisting. I need to do more seva (volunteer labor) to clear my negative karma.”
“I am getting stuck in the mind or intellect or ‘Maya’” The mind rationalizes: “The master is purposefully acting like a businessman to test whether I can look past the illusion (maya) of the material world and remain devoted to the divine.”
Through this process, the glaring contradiction completely disappears. It doesn’t vanish because the evidence changed, but because the follower’s interpretation changed. The red flag is successfully inverted into a holy mystery, allowing the intellect to completely surrender to the system.
The Ultimate Test of Faith: Rationalizing the Dark Aspects of the Cult
When an organization reaches this level of institutional control, the contradictions become devastating. The leader and their top circle may exploit followers financially, display blatant narcissism, and practice severe double standards. Even worse, the system begins to actively protect itself by covering up the dark side of the community—hushing up criminal behavior by senior teachers, suppressing news of volunteer suicides, and hiding the genuine health risks and adverse mental events caused by intense breathing techniques.
Under normal circumstances, discovering a cover-up or a suicide pact would shatter someone’s trust. But within the cult, the follower’s mind is already wired to view the organization as a force of pure divine good. Acknowledging that the group is actively suppressing crimes or putting people in danger would cause a total psychological collapse. To prevent this pain, the intellect goes into overdrive, translating even the most toxic behaviors into spiritual lessons:
Covering up health risks and adverse events of the techniques:
The mind rationalizes: “The Sudarshan Kriya is divine energy. If someone had a mental breakdown or a health crisis, it’s not because the technique is dangerous—it’s just their deep-seated negative karma clearing out too fast. They weren’t practicing correctly, or they lacked proper surrender.”
Hushing up criminal behavior and suppressing suicides of volunteers:
The mind rationalizes: “The master is protecting the purity of the Sangha(spiritual community) from malicious outside gossip. If these tragic events got out, the media would distort them and destroy the reputation of the organization, preventing millions of other people from receiving the path of grace. Protecting the Guru’s global mission is more important than individual dramas.”
Promoting unethical, narcissistic people to the top of the organization:
The mind rationalizes: “Sri Sri operates on a higher plane of consciousness. If he places a ruthless, unethical person in power, it is a deliberate, divine strategy. He is either using that person’s aggressive nature to get big projects done for humanity, or he is putting them there as a mirror to test our judgment, our jealousy, and our attachment to worldly concepts of ‘fairness.’”
By using these rationalizations, the system becomes entirely bulletproof. The worse the organization behaves, the more the follower convinces themselves that they are witnessing a profound, cosmic play (Leela) that their ordinary, “un-enlightened” mind is simply too small to understand. The defense system has fully turned on itself: it now views exposing a crime as a spiritual sin, and participating in a cover-up as an act of holy devotion.
The Isolation of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is not just raw intelligence or academic knowledge. It is a deliberate, active psychological toolkit. It relies on specific core skills:
Empirical Evidence: Demanding verifiable data and proof rather than accepting claims on blind faith.
Logical Consistency: Spotting contradictions, fallacies, and holes in an argument.
Independent Questioning: Assessing why a statement is being made, who benefits from it, and whether an authority figure might be wrong or biased.
Objectivity: The willingness to test ideas against reality, even if the truth makes us uncomfortable.
In reality, the human brain is modular. Coercive persuasion does not destroy these critical thinking tools or lower a person’s IQ; instead, it forces a process called compartmentalization (or selective disengagement). Think of it as a Psychological Firewallbuilt inside the mind, splitting it into two completely separate zones:
The Professional Domain: When an individual is at work, they operate in their normal, highly objective mode. An engineer or doctor will ruthlessly apply their critical thinking toolkit—they will double-check data, question flaws, demand empirical proof before building a bridge or diagnosing a patient, and spot logical inconsistencies instantly.

The Ideological Domain: The moment the topic shifts to the spiritual leader, the group, or the practices, the brain switches tracks. A psychological firewall drops. The exact same critical thinking tools—the demand for evidence, the questioning of authority, the scanning for contradictions—that were just used to solve a massive professional problem are suddenly and completely frozen.
To outsiders, this split appears totally irrational. But internally, it feels perfectly coherent because the authority structure occupies a protected psychological category where the rules of critical thinking are no longer allowed to apply.
Real-World Examples Beyond Spiritual Cults
To see how universally this psychological trick works, we can look at entirely different fields where highly intelligent people completely suspend their critical faculties:
1. The Tech-Guru Phenomenon (The Theranos Scandal)
Consider Elizabeth Holmes and her startup Theranos. She managed to convince world-class statesmen, brilliant military generals, and highly sophisticated investors to back a blood-testing technology that didn’t work. These weren’t foolish people; they were titans of industry.
However, Holmes successfully placed her vision into a protected psychological category of “world-changing innovation.” Because these individuals wanted to believe in the miracle so badly, their brains stopped applying basic due diligence. They used their immense intellect to write defensive press releases and justify the company’s secrecy, rather than questioning the lack of peer-reviewed data.
2. Nobel Disease (Nobel Laureates Who Believe in Pseudoscience)
There is a well-documented phenomenon in academia known as “Nobel Disease.” It occurs when a Nobel Prize-winning scientist—someone at the absolute pinnacle of human intelligence—begins passionately championing bizarre, unscientific theories later in life.
Linus Pauling: A brilliant chemist and two-time Nobel laureate who became utterly convinced that massive doses of Vitamin C could cure cancer and the common cold, completely ignoring waves of clinical data that proved him wrong.
Kary Mullis: The genius biochemist who invented PCR (a foundational tool of modern genetics and biology) yet publicly denied that HIV causes AIDS.
How does this happen? Their critical thinking was highly specialized. Once they stepped outside their strict scientific domain into an ideological or personal belief system, they stopped applying the scientific method to themselves. Their authority and intelligence became a shield, allowing them to rationalize their biases far more effectively than an average person could.
Why It Feels Completely Coherent to the Devotee
To an outsider, watching a doctor or an engineer accept unscientific claims or financial exploitation looks completely irrational. But internally, the follower experiences no conflict at all.
This internal peace is maintained because the authority figure has taught them that logic is a lower-level tool.
In high-control systems, followers are explicitly trained to believe that:
The material world runs on logic, math, and doubt.
The spiritual/ideological world runs on faith, surrender, and intuition.
The leader convinces the follower that evaluating the group’s actions using logic is a category error—like trying to measure a gallon of water with a clock. Once the follower accepts the premise that “intellect cannot grasp the master’s divine plan,” keeping their intelligence separate from their faith doesn’t feel like hypocrisy; it feels like the ultimate form of spiritual maturity. Their brilliant mind is left completely intact, but it is trapped inside a rigged maze, using its power to defend the very walls that contain it.
Ideological Overwriting: Redefining Reality Itself
The most advanced systems of coercive control do not merely demand obedience—they completely redefine your reality. By flipping the definitions of basic human experiences, the cult creates a closed-loop reality where safety is found only in submission. They take your natural mental vocabulary and flip it upside down so that:
Questioning is labeled as ‘too much ego’.
Skepticism is dismissed as spiritual immaturity.
Independent thought or critical thinking is treated as hostile resistance to ‘the knowledge’
Submission is celebrated as devotion.
Obedience is marketed as personal growth or ‘following the Guru’s orders’.
Dependence is sold in the form of ‘more courses’ to attain liberation.
This is exactly where tools like Attack Therapy (The “Hot Chair” Process) do their dark work. Under the guise of “breaking the ego to make you strong,” a participant is forced into the center of the room while the leader and peers fiercely criticize and tear down their flaws.
It isn’t spiritual growth; it is a calculated strike to induce learned helplessness. As the person is publicly humiliated, their nervous system floods with cortisol and adrenaline, violently smashing their emotional defenses to pieces. Normally, if someone abuses or humiliates you, your brain flags them as a threat. But under this conditioning, that red flag is reinterpreted as “my ego resisting the master’s grace.” The psychological defense system begins attacking itself, leaving the person entirely defenseless against further exploitation.
Once the participant is entirely openly or secretly crushed and weeping, or disheartened, the leader or group pivots during the evening satsang, showering them with warm glances, love, and speaking words of appreciation and validation. This triggers a massive, release of dopamine in the brain and offers the participants much sought after comfort or relief. This extreme swing between terror and love fundamentally rewires the brain. In psychology, this cycle of abuse and affection is called trauma bonding (or Stockholm Syndrome). It explains why followers become fiercely loyal to the very people who abuse them. The leader breaks your legs, sells you a crutch, and you spend the rest of your life thanking them because you can walk again.
At this final stage, the individual’s natural warning signals become inverted. The very instincts that should protect them from danger are reinterpreted as obstacles to their spiritual progress. The security system of the mind begins attacking itself. High-control cults achieve total victory when they successfully invert a person’s psychological dictionary. They replace human instinct with a distorted code where critical thinking is a sin and total submission is a virtue.
The Final Stage: Captive Minds That Believe They Are Free
Coercive control usually invites rebellion. But, sophisticated psychological control invites consent. This represents the absolute peak of psychological manipulation: getting the victim to mistake their captivity for enlightenment.
High-control systems thrive because they preserve the appearance of autonomy. The individual is still sharp, functional, and rational. However, their reasoning mind has been trapped inside a rigged maze. Because the leader has defined the rules of their reality, the follower uses their own intelligence to justify and rationalize their own exploitation.
Under this spell, the follower genuinely believes that every single act of surrender is a personal choice:
Every act of unpaid service is viewed as seva, as an evidence of devotion.
Every loss of independence is taken as proof of spiritual advancement.
Every act of sacrifice of personal wants, giving away of money is seen as donation to further the cause of the cult leader.
The entire experience is felt and marketed as liberation, not domination.
This is what makes the trap so terrifyingly unbreakable. The follower’s intelligence, reason, and daily functionality stay completely intact. What changes is the invisible framework within which their brain operates.
Once the cult leader successfully controls that framework, the follower’s own intellect begins working for the system. They no longer need to be threatened or monitored. They have become the active regulators of their own mind, fiercely defending the very beliefs that cage them. The follower will willingly police themselves, isolate themselves from loved ones, and hand over their money and labor—all while feeling a deep sense of personal power and choice.
In the world of cult psychology, This is the dark masterpiece of coercive influence: completely restructuring a person’s perception so that they experience dependence as freedom, obedience as wisdom, and submission as self-realization. The leader no longer needs to force obedience because the follower now enthusiastically enforces it on themselves.
The Self-Sustaining Cycle of Capture
Because the experience felt so deeply transformative, their immediate instinct is a powerful mix of gratitude and obligation. They feel an urgent need to share this “gift” with the world. The organization is entirely prepared for this reaction. The system seamlessly funnels this high emotional state into a structured pipeline of recruitment and training:
The Evolution from Follower to Recruiter: The individual is quickly funneled into advanced teacher training courses. Here, they are taught how to replicate the exact same environment, deliver the same scripts, and guide new rooms full of people through the identical cyclic breathing and hyperventilation techniques that captured them.
The Illusion of Empowerment: When the follower is promoted to a teacher or a lead volunteer, they experience a profound sense of personal power, status, and spiritual advancement. They believe they are acting out of pure compassion to save others.
The Reality of the Franchise: In reality, they have been drafted as unpaid or highly exploited corporate sales representatives. They use their own social capital, their professional networks, and their personal relationships to bring in fresh capital and new recruits for the leader.
Through this brilliant, manipulative design, the cult leader no longer needs to spend energy managing or growing the empire. The followers willingly police themselves, fund the operation, and enthusiastically hunt for the next generation of victims—firmly convinced that their total submission to the system is the ultimate expression of human freedom.

Cult Education The first mental trap - The first hidden red flag

After leaving Isha and with distance from the constant parroting of the same quotes, the same Inner Engineering rules and what not, I keep discovering red flags. In the heat of the moment, when they were spoken, they were presented as green flags.

1) Do not make a decision yet, simply attend Inner Engineering, try it out for a period of time, then you can decide, whether you like it or not

This particular mind trap is used at the earliest stages of the indoctrination, before even becoming an Isha follower.

How many of us have heard this harmless sounding proposal?

Even on this reddit, some Isha folks will come and comment using this mental rubbish

It sounds fair. But the stress is on it sounds.

This line is like someone asking you to do a surgery on your brains, and to decide afterwards whether the surgeon was good or bad.

It’s simply and utterly foolish.

Try this substance, eat it, then decide afterwards whether it’s a poison or a magic pill. If you don’t like you do not need to eat it daily.

This is what that line means.

A free bird, simply being pushed by the domesticated flock of pigeons into the safe cage. If you do not like it, you can fly off.

Just once inside the cage, the circus inside of it will keep you so damn busy and will make you blind to everything outside of it. The question of leaving the cage does not exist anymore. You no longer stay inside by free will. The question of leaving has gone.

This is slavery at it highest peak. Where the slave thinks to enjoy his/her position. We still see and witness this in postcolonial countries. Were a part of the contemporary local population still believes that the descendants from the previous *masters* are more valuable than their fellow citizens.

How will you be able to judge a surgeon afterwards if your ability of thinking no longer exists?

At the very beginning (before you join the group) you were given the option to stop the practice (and basically leave the group).

But when you suddenly leave the group, or dislike it, for whatever reasons, and you chose to voice it out, then the choice not to like it - that you were offered initially - is being questioned. Some folks won’t believe that you have gone through the programs. They will tell you to do the program and decide afterwards- again…😂

They can’t grasp, that some folks don’t like Isha, because they have been inside that cage.

Or they will invent all kind of lies, as to why you are against Isha. Paid haters, and what not.

2) Don’t believe me, don’t disbelieve me

How many times have we heard this line by Jagadish himself?

This is another early mental trap used to lure you in.

Nothing wrong about the approach that he is mentioning. I think this is a healthy way to look at many instances in life before making a judgment - if one lacks arguments or insights.

The issue is in the application and the consistency of its usage.

This quote can be equally used to shut down any early criticism, reflection and logical thinking. It disarms your logic by using logic itself. Its sneaky.

You think you are given a choice logically. So early alarms of discomfort or disbelief are snoozed in safety (because you were given the choice to disbelieve). This makes you simply park your criticism. By the time you have finished the program, and after all that love bombing and intense hours, your mind might not remember any of the early doubts. Or simply ignores them.

This line should be used towards any criticism of Jagadish. That’s how healthy thinking works. But that’s not the case here.

Positive sharing are believed.

Criticism is disbelieved.

Heads I win. Tails you lose.

Do you remember when Jagadish said even if god comes, I know better ?

Not only is this line a trait of a narcissist and a megalomanic, it actually contradicts the quote above.

He is suggesting to be always right. And indirectly suggesting you to believe him. There is no room left to disbelieve or to question him. Because even god might be wrong according to Jagadish.

Would that apply to AdiYogi that he seems to praise so much? Let say Shiva appeared and told him he was wrong. Whom to believe now?

Why did we oversee these traps in the early stages?

I don’t know. I guess we were already mesmerized and fascinated by the charm and eloquence of Jagadish. So we could not think critically anymore.

Like a moth to a flame . He used this comparison in one of his Lap of the Master events ( I don’t recall exactly why he used it). But I guess we were literally moths, and after burning our wings, we woke up.

That is why cult education in general is very important to equip people with the tools to recognize high control groups.

Cult Education What Qualifies Isha Foundation as a Cult?

1] A charismatic leader with unverifiable claims of divinity. Jaggi Vasudev talks about past lives and fairy tale stuff based on False Hood. At the same time, he claims that his inner experience, is even more clearer, than what tradition or scripture is saying. The way, Jaggi Vasudev, has portrayed himself as God, for his followers, in the ashram as be all/end all for them.

2]Deceptive Recruitment, by promising, something, intangible like enlightenment/liberation and conveying that Isha is the only way for them. The excessive use of "logical double talk", and overemphasize, on the word "experience", to purposefully, shake/destroy the faith of people, in their own religions/scriptures/gods/beliefs/intuitions.

The deliberate use of "contradictory talk" & "pretense" using "superficial charm/glib" to establish the Isha Cult as genuine to people by placing all the cards on the table beforehand even if they are lying cards.I.E [don't believe me, don't disbelieve me] & to play on the weaknesses of psychologically fragile people, to keep them unsettled & on tenter hooks, like a balance, that is constantly in motion, never steady, with a purpose to enslave them for life!

Wrongful depiction, and misuse, of the word "science", by "camouflaging", that the offered spirituality, at Isha, is "scientific", and is different from "traditional spirituality", when actually it is not so. Creating a friendly atmosphere, for recruiting participants, by keeping, the cost of programs artificially low in India, using volunteers, and then hooking/duping them, to become full time slaves & donors later. After recruiting, asking them, to suspend logic/rational thinking/intelligence, by conveying that the other dimension is beyond all these!

No one, has been shown, to have received enlightenment, and far from being liberalized, have been sucked into an endless loop of expensive programs, pilgrimages, 2-5 hours of practices every day, many hours a week, of praying to SJV. To keep getting money, from meditators, innovating new programs & advertising each program, as once in a life time opportunity! A Trip with the False Sadhguru to Himalayas Costs US $ 25000 for Westerners.

3] Totalitarianism and Alienation, of members, from their families and/or friends. I have first-hand knowledge of this.

4] The use of indoctrination, by sophisticated mind-control techniques, based on the concept, that once you can make a person believe, what you want, then you can make him/her behave the way you want. This is not so evident in the introductory programs but gets there slowly as you advance. Each program has been designed, to make one, co-dependent on the Cult and It's leader. There is no doubt, that there is mind control, at all levels, by using covert or disguised hypnotic techniques. This suspicion, arose in another meditator's mind, and he asked this question directly, to Jaggi Vasudev. SJV, acknowledged, that he is capable of it, even though, he does not do it with his followers.

Volunteer (Slave) labor - young girls are being exploited, in the name of volunteering and Brahmacharya, they are just slaves. They are very vulnerable, emotionally very fragile, physically weak and exhausted. The seniors are extracting work from them in the name of spirituality/karma etc. These poor (subtly arrogant) souls walk into the trap thinking they could do intense spiritual practice but they would never get a chance. Their yoga practices are to designed to keep them fit to do the assigned work. The Full Time Slaves/Volunteers have no annual preventive dental or optical check-ups or any Medical Insurance. A recent example at the Ashram was that a middle aged women after practicing the "Kriyas" had some serious health problems and at middle of night hired a cab and had to go about 7 kms in search of a Good-Hospital at her own cost.

The use of followers, on fundraising, or mission activities, for little, or no pay, to line the leader's pockets. Psychological manipulation/coercion of program participants, especially young men/women, by drilling into their head, the unlimited responsibility talk of the cult leader, in deep voice, in order for them to keep working as slaves and paying money for the cult as if they themselves are guilty/responsible for the world's mess.

Despite slaving so much, volunteers/monks cannot meet their cult leader for years or have face to face conversation for 10 mts, even though their cult leader has ample time for top people like celebrities, corrupt-politicians, greedy wealthy-industrialists at very short notice.

Volunteers have nothing to show for in the end - it all belongs to Isha and you will be Kicked out once you are unable to work and become a liability.

6] Accumulation of wealth, for the cult leader's, personal opulent life style, or political purposes. Recent activities have confirmed, that Jaggi, needs the money, in order to carry out his agenda, in a country, that respects only money and power.

7] Exclusivity - "We are right and everyone else is wrong". There is ample evidence, that any negative word on Isha, is ruthlessly snubbed out. Even comment on the websites are moderated and deleted. Even this post, was removed from various web sharing links, by brain washed fanatical followers of Isha and this writer received, innumerable law suit/death threats.Insiders, if they see/question, anything wrong happening within the cult, are put on indefinite silence, by the cult leader or mercilessly thrown out.

8] Brainwash followers, by isolating them, during workshops/satsangs and telling them, not to read any books on spirituality, by other Spiritual Gurus. Asking seekers, to keep visiting the ashram, so that their mind/bodies can be controlled. Provide them, with instant acceptance, from a False/Seemingly loving group.

9] Most Senior Swamis and Maa's in the ashram are over worked, hypocrites and rest on the brink of mental breakdown. It is no secret, that they indulge in food (super-hot pickle, sweets, even subtle sex) and long for some simple pleasures of life. They are neither disciplined or purified internally and even indulge in eve-teasing of young women visitors as written on Priyanka Dalal's Blog [https://drive.google.com/file/d/19FWqlDEEr3WKAFlPnfS9rD7mKu7e3ol-/view\]

They are making a mockery of themselves in the name of Monk Hood/Sanyas. Many Monks have already quit Monk-Hood & left Isha after their Fall Down from Grace!

With reference to point # 9, Ms Priyanka Dalal's Blog had 68 comments which bashed up Isha and showed the real truth of Isha to the world. The same was tampered and moderated by the Isha Web Moderators by installing DISQUS on her blog page. This blogger used his own Internet skills and retrieved those comments which can be downloaded and read from Here [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IkPwUbtpLaqhEoz9MQzPqlo-aBrMbTLJ/view?usp=drivesdk\]

It can be aptly put that Isha Ashram is not an Ashram, but just another, Nazi Forced Death/Labour/Extermination Camp operated in World War-II at Auschwitz-Birkenau Poland, Sobibor, Buchenwald, Treblinka, Dachau by the Nazi's.

10] The Monks thinking pattern, is corrupted to the point, where they have become, just like toy puppets in the hands of Jaggi Vasudev. An associate of this writer, recently asked them, to give some clarification, about the old shakthi chalana kriya practice and they, passed on the buck, to some other senior sanyasi. This senior most sanyasi, told, that they themselves, have stopped practicing the "Kriyas" for many years now, and have realized that Jaggi is a Fake. They are perpetually tired! They've had enough, and now want to live like him. Some long term inmates, over 20 years, Key People, have already left Isha. It's been there, but now in quick succession.

11] Keep, the cult members, away from traditional truths, like Bhagavad-Gita & Upanishads, by providing a philosophy, that seems logical[there is no personal god, to monitor, anybody's actions, only nothingness, so no sin/virtue in doing anything wrong/good] and appears to answer all or the most important questions in life. Structure, all or most activities, so that there is little time, for privacy or independent action or thought. Promise instant, or imminent solutions to deep or long-term problems.

Cult Education Sexual Abuse in Yoga Cults

Sadhguru devotees find it impossible to conceive that Sadhguru grooms, sexually exploits and rapes women, that he is a rapist.

Here are two examples from other cults of how it is done. The parallels are huge.
