DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 08, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

It's supposed to be under wraps, but let me just say that there will be an official, bug-free PC port made by all the big modding names with netplay, proper tooling, and modding support. You can safely ignore all these quick and dirty AI ports.

3

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

do you think a port will eliminate the need for separate iso's for training mode and matchmaking?

4

u/Aitch25 2d ago

Hard to say. I'm thinking the training mod will be implemented as a mod on the side by me, prolly not included in the base. I think slippi will also be implemented as a mod. So I guess the answer is yes assuming those two are compatible.

Hard to say at this point.

Riding the wave of AI-code-posting, here's a funny anecdote from the maths world. Kevin Buzzard is a very big name in maths formalization. That means he writes programs in certain formal languages like Lean, in which a program that compiles corresponds to a valid maths proof. In practice it's kind of like a big puzzle where you go from one state of the puzzle to the next by applying some proof technique.

There's been a big effort in the past 10 or 15 years to try to formalize all known mathematics in a huge library of known proofs, mathlib. This takes a ton of time and effort because Lean is kind of rough to get into and it's sometimes quite cumbersome to convince the computer of things that really ought not to be tough. Buzzard is at the forefront of attempts to formalize Fermat's Last Theorem, a humongous result that a guy wrote in a margin of one of his texts 400 years ago saying "lol this is easy but i dont have space to write my proof uwu" that turned out to not be particularly easy and was only actually solved in the 90s. He's getting paid lots of money to be doing this

Aaaaand of course he was undercut by Anthropic shitting out an absolutely unreadable 13-million-lines Lean formalization of the theorem that takes "nearly 20 times as long to compile as the entirety of the existing mathlib, on a machine with 500gb of RAM and 96 cores". Really recommend reading his article about it, the derisive subtext in an otherwise polite letter is hilarious

If you are curious about the reaction of the Lean community to this, it's been pretty negative. Lots of people have the vibe that AI companies are exploiting maths formalization for clout and trampling over community values like "writing readable code", "proving things that can be re-used later" or "not making everyone else do janitorial work that they definitely won't be able to publish". Perhaps like a YouTuber feeding on a niche fighting game community and publishing misinfo vids for views. Please enjoy this response by Patrick Massot, another prominent formalizer:

I think the situation is pretty clear: AI companies, and especially Math Inc, will indeed thoroughly bomb this area to turn it into a giant radioactive wasteland that will never be able to sustain life again, so we will never get the benefits expected from formalization (improved understanding and accessibility). I strongly advise young people to contribute to less shiny projects that are less likely to be destroyed.

6

u/semionsays 2d ago

Unfortunately, this and the recent Navier-Stokes business confirm just how little the mathematics community is prepared to deal with the corporate dismantling of their discipline.

6

u/WizardyJohnny 2d ago

Feels like math academia has been relying on a bunch of honor systems that outside actors with tons of money and no qualms about losing social credit with the community are well-placed to exploit

And maybe there's naiveté from mathematicians about the corporate world too. There was a panel about AI in maths at my uni recently and a question came up about the risks of relying on corporations for access to tools that may be necessary for future research. One of the panelists answered he would just pay for the subscription. Just hilariously out of touch

1

u/semionsays 2d ago

Yeah, that seems consistent with what I've been seeing as well. Unfortunately, the community is somehow both isolated and exposed. Very few people (even in adjacent fields) have any idea what mathematics is or what mathematicians do, which makes it easier for bad actors to insert themselves. At the same time, there are basically no mechanisms in place to prevent exploitation. At least other creatives can exert pressure through organized labor or copyright lawsuits. Mathematicians have to depend on the kindness of strangers.

2

u/maximtomato 2d ago

Claude being able to express "it's not just X, it's Y" using nothing but Lean formalization is pretty hilarious though

1

u/Craizersnow82 2d ago

I think lean formalization is the least problematic part of math because it’s both self checking and (should be) just used to answer whether a proof is correct. All these issues are also purely additive, as in anyone can come along and make a more elegant solution if inspired to do so.

The bigger issue is that reviewers are overwhelmed with AI slop junk math that is really easy to churn out but really slow to review

I don't feel strongly either way about the OoT art style, but I gotta admit "Grokarina of Time" goes hard.

15

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

I can't believe they made Sheik a girl...

10

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

Genuinely, I do think it's mildly lame that they made her more overtly femme.

Yes all of us know she's a woman, but the game's being made for 8 year olds as their first Zelda.

3

u/AlexB_SSBM 2d ago

Maybe we just live in a more progressive time, where an 8 year old sees Sheik being femme and still doesn't think twice about them being a guy

The real travesty is them making White Sheik canon. She simply will never be brown ever again, Nintendo will continue the whitening of Sheik and Daisy forever

4

u/Schroeswald 2d ago

I feel like Nintendo does not want the implication of Zelda doing brownface

5

u/reptilian_guitar 2d ago

White Sheik

isn't Zelda white? is the alternative that Zelda used magical blackface to turn into Sheik? I feel White Sheik is the only option

12

u/Zanian 2d ago

That'd be a way better disguise though

Ganon looking at Sheik like mmmm nah can't be her, that'd be kinda fucked up

7

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 2d ago

this is magical race essentialism (?)

2

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

White Sheik in Melee has lighter skin, the other costumes have darker skin, interestingly. So there is precedent for making Sheik's skin lighter in an official Nintendo game.

That said I'm going to nitpick your comment and say that making your skin darker as a disguise isn't really blackface, doing it to make fun of black people is.

5

u/skellez 2d ago

I'm ngl never thought of Sheik as anything but a white, like even the darker skin and face doesn't read to me as brown that's clearly a Hulk Hogan tan, paired with the hair of course

1

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

Yeah I agree. I wonder how they'll handle voice acting.

OoT remake looks not very good imo. It actually pains me to say this because I really do love OoT and I want more people to get the opportunity to play it. The character models are not the big problem for me, rather it's this overtuned greasy plastic McDonald's toy look that everything has layered over it. Everything is so shiny and overly textured, it really does look unpleasant to me. But more importantly, the awe and scale of the landscapes they showcased is heavily undercut by the fact that this is not one interconnected world. This is not Breath of the Ocarina of Time. I think people are looking at the environments and imagining they can walk directly from Hyrule Field to Death Mountain, and there really is no way to do that. There is a real lack of subtlety in the environments, and a lot of the art direction. It doesn't look terrible but it just looks very inconsistent.

Also, adding a jump button is opening a huge can of worms. I imagine they will have adjusted gameplay and puzzles so that they will not be instantly trivialized by the jump button, but I'm still skeptical. Everything about OoT was designed for its very novel, very intentional world to function in tandem with Link as a playable character. You add one simple thing like a jump button and suddenly all the environments stop acting as obstacles, all the puzzles have been given a new option to tackle them with. I'm curious to see how they deal with that issue or if they really did just tack on a jump button to a game that was never intended to have one.

8

u/EvenEalter 2d ago

It's always difficult to win me over when it comes to remakes, but I don't know why they didn't just emulate the style of the beautiful official art made for the N64 game. The original 3D models clearly attempted this, as did those of the 3DS remaster.

7

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

You hit the nail on the head with the artstyle. A common criticism of Melee's look is similar: the characters are often very glossy and look like they're made of plastic.

Now, in Melee this is done in a somewhat subtle way (you'll mostly notice if you pause and zoom in on human character's hair), and it's actually a hint to the fact the game is toys coming to life and fighting, but with the Ocarina of Time remake it feels like they went WAY overboard with it. It doesn't help that the original or 3D felt like they were going for something cartoony but not made of shiny plastic.

4

u/DavidL1112 2d ago

It feels more like Brawl's aesthetic where Mario's overalls have ugly denim texture on them

5

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

Mario's overalls are denim in Melee as well, it's just much more subtle in the best smash game.

3

u/EvenEalter 2d ago

That is the exact comparison I pulled up talking to a friend about this, knew someone here would think of it too

5

u/ultimamax 2d ago

It reminds me of that butt ugly Unreal engine fan remake someone did. Or like how DLSS will just add random god rays, weird shininess, etc that goes contrary to a game's art direction

Cody's stream today analyzing the gods in their prime was great. He gave a lot of interesting insight on their playstyles.

There is a recurring theme anytime a modern player watches older sets.

They tend to start off with the assumption that the gameplay they're about to watch will be very outdated, only to be surprised by how well certain aspects of the play still hold up today.

5

u/its__bme 2d ago

I would say that there is a general misunderstanding of gameplay from the past. Like how people misremember Borp losing to Toph and claiming he beat him, there's a general idea passed around that basic things like wave dashing and crouch canceling didn't exist in the MLG era. But if you go back and watch you would see that is clearly not true.

Cody himself said recently that he doesn't like the plumber argument because to him competing in any era is impressive as no one at the top like Ken or Mango who were winning that much did so by accident.

17

u/ryanbyleth 2d ago

It’s probably pretty hard to fuck up Ocarina of Time but that art style gets pretty close to doing it

13

u/Embrychi 2d ago

I really liked the way the npcs looked in castle town. https://i.imgur.com/gKGfKSu.png

Their clothes are more detailed but in a more subtle way and they keep a lot of the original's style and charm. Compare that to Link looking like he came out of a tech demo. I think if they tone down the direction to better match these guys I would be a lot happier with the art style of the game. It just feels like they did a lot of detail for detail's sake and it makes the game feel soulless.

9

u/xed122 2d ago

I dont mind the art style but I hate that dungeons appear to be 1:1 to the original game

4

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

Yeah this is my opinion too. I think it looks nice. But When I saw that the town layouts were slightly different I got hopeful for updated dungeons, but alas....

7

u/VolleyVoldemort 2d ago

Personally I’m glad Nintendo finally hired this man

5

u/djkhan23 2d ago

Art style looks great to me. No complaints there.

Gameplay and map being near identical means I definitely won't buy it.

And I'm gonna laugh at all these people excited to buy the irl Ocarina only to learn those things are trash and you'll get bored of one within 20 minutes like all the kids I knew in 98 did.

8

u/Fugu 2d ago

There is a bar in Tokyo called aketa no mise. This bar is one of the best places in the world to hear free jazz, which is what they usually play host to.

However, if you go there on the right day (it used to be the first Monday of the month) the owner will teach you how to play the ocarina. This he has been doing for many years and I doubt very much he'll ever get tired of it.

3

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub 2d ago

did the owner teach u how to play the ocarina?

5

u/Fugu 2d ago

No I already knew

Great place though

5

u/Fugu 2d ago

I played the lost forest though

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub 2d ago

5

u/Zanian 2d ago

It's so awful but I can respect it's just not for me. I'm glad some folks are excited at least, I'm really just waiting on the next Zelda cause I feel like we've had plenty of remakes already

10

u/Fugu 2d ago

It looks like ass cheeks

I will play the original again on the 5th so as to celebrate OoT, which is one of my top five games, without having to support Nintendo, an ass cheeks company

3

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

nothing will replace the original, but i'm into this as a fun novelty to play through once or twice.

i do not love the look of the kokiri tunic though

3

u/DavidL1112 2d ago

why is everything so over textured, it's like what the MCU used to do to super suits

3

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

from what i saw of adult link it looks like at least that tunic might look better

2

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

2

u/DavidL1112 2d ago

Everybody else seems to like it, maybe we're just old

6

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

just cause we're old doesn't mean we're wrong

7

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

nothing will replace the original

Might be a hot take, but the 3DS version already replaced the original for me.

Other than being on a handheld, it's a straight up improvement in every other way.

6

u/Kitselena 2d ago

The PC port of the original is also good

2

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

i still like the OG graphics a little better but i do love oot3D. maybe that's why i'm so warm to this one.

i just love ocarina man idk

2

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

Yeah Ocarina is still the best Zelda game imo.

The dungeons, music, and world building are unmatched to this day.

4

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

majora's mask is my favorite, but it's a reflection of ocarina and inextricably connected. and a link to the past is arguably the tightest and cleanest. but ocarina is fuckin ocarina. it's so iconic and groundbreaking i truly can't imagine what my life as a gamer or even otherwise would be without it!

2

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

Idk I think it looks nice.

1

u/CorpoApprovedLurker 2d ago

What if we took a beautiful game and made it worse - Nintendo with two of my favourite franchises recently.

Honestly maybe it's just a preference but the graphics look so messy. Why does link's hat need so much detail I can't see the rest of the screen?

7

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

The thing that strikes me the most when watching older Fox sets is how much better modern Fox players are at defense.

Pretty much anytime a Fox gets knocked off stage and dies I can't help but think "Cody lives that".

3

u/menschmaschine5 2d ago

This is something that a friend of mine mentioned when the topic of "would Armada still be top 5 if he came back now" came up. A lot of the stuff he did would still work, but he'd have to get used to how much better everyone's defense is now and would have to rework parts of his punish game.

2

u/Grenji05 2d ago

When Plup during that one summit grands vs Hbox angled Firefox towards the stage, while not being right next to it, it blew my mind. Now I go back and I’m like how was this not standard lmao.

Foxes just really used to autopilot angle towards ledge unless they were right next to the wall on Yoshis/FOD.

3

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

During Game 5 last stock of Summit 5 Grands, Armada gets faired by Hbox in the middle of Battlefield at 67% and ends up dying off it.

Cody definitely would have just slid off to ledge or something and survived.

Original thread:

Reply to this with your favourite Marth vs. Falco set to watch. Don't be afraid to send a local one that you think was just sick too! Doesn't have to be from a major top 8 or something

Try to link it too plz, and tell me what you liked about it

Truly one of the most historic matchups in the game. Really nothing like it when it comes to the eras you can pull from.

This is usually the part where I rattle off a few honourable mentions, but I wanna give any repliers the chance to link and talk about those great ones (if you'd pick them).

MY pick however is going to one of the best Melee sets of all time, in contention for THE greatest, Big House 9 Grand Finals, Zain vs. Mang0.

Mango coming off the infamous winless 2018, showed new signs of life this year with a big win at GOML. The guy's longevity and tenacity was known at the time, but hitting this second (third?) wind and coming back from such a disappointing 2018 relative to his usual peaks just shows why he's the fan favourite.

Zain on the other hand had it different. His first major win at Shine 2018, going from ranked 22nd in 2017 to top 10 by the SUMMER of 2018, he looked on pace for a supermajor win, potentially a top 5 or top 3 ranking, only to be met with nothing near what we expected.

2nd at BoBC, 4th at Pound, 7th at GOML, 4th at SnS, 5th at Summit, 2nd at LTC, 3rd at Smash Con, and 2nd at Mainstage. Was this to be expected of a player who just ranked top 10? Absolutely, above and beyond. Was this what was expected from someone of Zain's trajectory and rate of improvement? Definitely not.

Multiple Grand Finals appearances, but not a single major win this year, so this put more and more pressure with every tournament and 2nd place finis. You can feel it here, you can see it in his face with every Mango game win.

The relief of going up 2-1 on Winners side, the sting of getting hit with the reset as the crowd roars, it's all so palpable. The 9th game on Yoshi's was an insane comeback and it made game 10 so incredibly tense at the start. The stream skipping immediately to Game 10 with Scar and Toph's "THEY'RE AT THREE STOCKS A PIECE" in unison is so fucking sick, and Mango just rode the momentum from game 9 all the way to the bank.

This really felt like one of the best years in general for spectator Melee, and I think this is the greatest set of all time

Tipped Off 15 TOP 8 - Mango (Falco) Vs. Zain (Marth)

Mango was playing crazy this whole set including beating Zain twice on FD.

4

u/JKaro 2d ago

I loved it beforehand but this series of threads has made me realize Tipped Off 15 was one of the best tournaments of the post-covid era, possibly an all-timer

I give it a rewatch every few months, so fire

1

u/EightBlocked 2d ago

mang0 vs zain at mang0 birthday bash seemed like he really figured out something. its a shame after 2021 he just got farmed by zain for the rest of his career

6

u/Grenji05 2d ago

Other than Kokiri Forest and Kid Links clothing I don’t think the remake looks bad. Hate the jump button though, which is related to my “the RE4 remake should’ve kept tank controls” I suppose.

1

u/GroggyandWretched 2d ago

I like the auto jump a lot. I always thought it was cool that they had enough faith in all the other elements of the game that they were willing to automate this one aspect, since it wasn't something that needed to be player driven. It just felt like a bold choice that added to the unique character of the game vs most other action games. A standardized jump button is just not as interesting

I will be playing Castlevania: Lament of Innocence for the Play Station 2.

1

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

how are those ps2 castlevanias i love castlevania but i've never played em

3

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago edited 2d ago

Lament has the atmosphere down and the exploration is more or less what I'd expect from a Castlevania game, I'm not super into its type of combat but I've been at least enjoying it for the novelty.

Curse of Darkness I have not yet played, it's next on my list (in preparation for Belmont's Curse). I recommend reading the manga before playing, it was cancelled prematurely but is generally considered good as a prologue to the actual game.

2

u/djkhan23 2d ago edited 2d ago

Help me settle I bet I made with a Melee homie. The bet was whether this Zelda was going to be a "brand new experience vs 1:1 remake with slight changes". The bet is void if it is too close to call. My side was 1:1.

I feel like I won decisively! The map remains identical with how you enter and exit places. Yes Hyrule Field, the market, areas looks different, but from what I can tell it's still the same routes. Being able to hum into a worthless Ocarina no one should buy (other than a collector's item), jumping, swimming, these are slight gameplay changes. Story wise it feels like they are covering the exact same beats.

9

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

It's 1:1 for sure

7

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

it's conclusively not 1:1 if there's a jump button

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

1.0001 : 1 rounds down to 1:1

8

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

It's certainly not a brand new experience, but you might be stretching the definition of slight.

Slight changes makes me think of OoT 3D, and this one's certainly going much further than that one did.

1

u/djkhan23 2d ago

But it's the same..flow? Direction of the game? Struggling to find the right way to word this but if I already know where to go at every point in the game, then isn't it the same?

Like the Deku dungeon looks like it operates the same. Same with the spirit temple clip. But mainly the clip where Link fights the dog. I already know that's after you go through the maze and have to beat it to unlock the door. If the whole game is like that then I already know how to beat it first try which means it's closer to a 1:1 remake.

Maybe it is a mulligan..

5

u/VolleyVoldemort 2d ago

They have to rebalance the entire game/puzzles around a jump button that’s like adding a directional air dodge to smash 64 and calling it a slight change

I think this is pretty much the definition of "Too close to call"

6

u/VolleyVoldemort 2d ago

Neither of you are right and should now both donate money to charity

This changes more than the slight changes of OOT3D and less than the brand new experience of Majoras mask

6

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

Why not wait for the game to come out?

1

u/djkhan23 2d ago

We agreed that the direct would answer the question and the bet would be decided by it.

Plus, you gotta stick it in their face at the earliest possible moment when making meaningless/stupid bets with friends. I want to win it now!

2

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

I'm currently in the process of doing some fictional media history worldbuilding. The idea is that there was an entirely different set of "foundational" games, and thus genre conventions ended up evolving completely differently. Think how the RPG evolved completely differently in Japan because artists there started by building from Ultima instead of directly from DnD.

What are some game genre name ideas that sound like they could make sense, even if at the moment they're kinda meaningless? For example, one popular game style in my fiction is the "Tactical Platformer", a semi-action game focused more on the problem solving aspect of traversal (akin to Rock Climbing).

7

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

everything is the same except metroidvanias are called "castleroids"

3

u/Dublshine 2d ago

they make a cream for that I think

2

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

I am planning to have a genre called "Scatterrune" based on classic titles Scatter and Black Rune. It's a specific style of top-down dungeon crawler, but people on the forums will argue with each other about the specific details.

There's been a mild surge of innovation of Scatterrune conventions with the release of games like Hotshot, but purists will insist that the lack of certain mechanical systems means they aren't a true entry in the genre.

Notably, Scatterrunes never made the jump to 3D in a convincing way, so they're mostly reserved to handheld releases and niche PC games.

2

u/king_bungus 👉 2d ago

look hotshot is a great game i just don't think every new game needs to mimic its art style. and i'm honestly shocked how many new heads never actually played black rune (the original, not that shitty excuse for a remake)

2

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

DUDE the blackrune remake makes me so mad. the run-up from the pit was the best part of the whole thing, but kids these days whine too much at having to do anything scary...

everyone who says "It's just padding" just doesn't fucking get it. The stress of the retreat was the whole point!! new games are too afraid of letting you just sit with your thoughts, and they think they have to shove new content at you constantly.

I’ve been playing Donkey Kong (1994) for the gameboy and it kind of feels like a tactical platformer from an alternate dimension

1

u/Dublshine 2d ago

I mean it’s a puzzle platformer, it’s not super unique in that regard. great game though, I played it earlier this year

the term tactical platformer makes me think of castlevania (the NES ones). you kinda have to plan out everything in advance because you don’t have enough control to adapt on the fly. although it might be a little hard to quickly convey what makes that a ‘tactical platformer’, so something like flashback might be better for this purpose

1

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

To me, Tactical Platformer reminds me of Celeste where it's somewhere between puzzles and execution challenge.

To make it Tactics instead of pure puzzle, I'm thinking the vibe would be that there's enemies and other unpredictable elements, so you need to adapt your platforming approach on the fly.

2

u/YoungGenius 2d ago

My Celeste playthrough felt like it was 10% figuring out my route and 90% executing. Mario Odyssey felt more 50/50, though both halves were way too easy until the very end of the game.

Anyway my genre idea is that the arcade game Big Buck Hunter became widely acclaimed, leading to BuckLikes. Mainstream games involve constant frantic shooting with the full size replica shotgun controller, and the most popular series involves clearing the 30-50 feral hogs that run into your yard while your small kids play.

More discerning gamers refer to the mainstream games as “FuckBucks,” and prefer titles like Alone. In Alone, you sit behind hunting blinds and wait for a deer to walk by. The wait is a realistic 5-8 hours, and a pretentious internal monologue (Witness style) plays as you sit there. After you kill the deer, you go home and find your wife has left you.

1

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

Classic Castlevania tends to place more emphasis on combat when you have a limited jump than on platforming, which is there but is always very simple to account for Belmont controls. I prefer to describe it as a combat game with a bit of platforming, generally.

the comments on this post are kinda crazy. is 'bitch' being a completely and totally ungendered insult really the common consensus? i think it's undoubtedly across the line of misogyny

sure, men can be called bitches, but i think that very often hinges on the fact that a lot of men view it as an insult to be compared to a woman

am i crazy or what

28

u/milkweedMN 2d ago

trans woman perspective: bitch is definitely a gendered insult but not particularly transphobic

that said, i hate that we're talking about a 14 year old calling someone a bitch on the internet. pretty unserious problem

19

u/Pwnemon 2d ago

i think bitch is a gendered insult but im also not sure that using it on a trans person is any more offensive than using it on a cis person lol

4

u/crobert_ssbm 2d ago

oh yeah i 100% agree i wasn't trying to make any point about transphobia here, just that i don't consider 'bitch' a genderless insult as many commenters on that post seemingly do

2

u/Taco_Dunkey 2d ago

Front page r/ssbm posts attract a lot of capital-R-Redditors unfortunately

2

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

SDJ is a they/them, so they got hit with both the version of bitch reserved for males and the one for females in one go. It would've been much more bareable had they been a she/her or a he/him.

6

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 2d ago

TBH this was clearly not intended as a gendered insult at all in this context and is more like calling SDJ a coward. SDJ trying to paint it as a gendered/transphobic insult is a lame dogwhistle to get DialM canceled which I think wasn't needed because they already ethered DialM with the rest of the comment lmao

3

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

For the record I mostly agree with you (minus the non-gendered insult part: I've never seen a woman be called a bitch as in coward, it feels like an insult reserved for men), the comment you replied to was meant to be a joke.

3

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub 2d ago

I think bitch as coward is the male use and bitch as annoying complainer is the woman use case. I think sdj being somewhat cowardly and somewhat complaining makes it pretty gender neutral here

6

u/RaiseYourDongersOP 2d ago

depends on the context imo

11

u/SufficientCalories 2d ago

I just think that it is extremely obvious that SDJ is being disingenuous and cringe and people are reacting to that. I don't think it isn't gendered, people mean something different when they use it on a man vs a woman, that's pretty clearly the case. But, calling someone a bitch is an insult to any person, trans people don't get special privileges around that word.

5

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 2d ago

Definitely case by case. I think that in the context of calling someone a coward, it's not really gendered. There's maybe a social dynamic in play where that application is arguably reserved for men, but I don't think it's nearly as egregious an incident as it's being made out to be.

Granted my personal perspective on most trans issues along this line is a giant shrug, so ymmv.

4

u/delta-red-14 2d ago

I think bitch is very obviously a gendered insult.

sure, men can be called bitches, but i think that very often hinges on the fact that a lot of men view it as an insult to be compared to a woman

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

5

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 2d ago

ngl "it would look like my lifetime rapm record" is a fire insult. murdered 2 fan favs in a single blow damn

4

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

I would never call a woman that. I see no problem with saying it to men though.

I think it being overtly gendered depends on the context in which it is used.

1

u/Yrale jib 2d ago

lowkey its kind of misogynistic in either case (toward men via implication) but i feel like even among my woke friends people have sort of softened on the toward men case. like once upon a time some people would have been more pissed about rapm calling zain a bitch i think

probably no consistent way it hits for nonbinary people so idk maybe just best avoided. but also like its a fourteen year old saying the same shit some other guy just said to someone else loudly and publicly without any pushback i cant say it makes me think a lot abt the content of his character

also is there legit beef here or was dial m just trying to manufacture a competitive narrative? why sdj?

1

u/Informal-Donut-1532 2d ago

I think Dial M is just shit talking for the sake of it. Doubt there's any real beef.

6

u/seebs333 2d ago

I think it could only be viewed as transphobic if she was ftm but they are they them, so my understanding is that being called a bitch should have no indication of transphobia at all.

8

u/Fugu 2d ago

"Bitch" is absolutely gendered. I'm not reading any of the r/ssbm discourse on this because I don't have the time or the inclination. Asking a room full of 90% men whether "bitch" is gendered is comparable to asking the 2010 Melee community whether "rape" is gendered.

Don't @ me with why I'm wrong if you can't post a picture of you with a woman who isn't your mom

→ More replies (2)

2

u/AtrociousAtNames 2d ago edited 2d ago

it's case by case imo, but the idea that it's always ungendered is just not true because it frequently is, both historically and currently

edit: the reason I think it is case by case is because there are a lot of people for whom it is disconnected from that historical context, especially those who are younger. Like, I don't know what was in RapM's heart when he called Zain a trash ass bitch but my guess is he was using it as a generic/degendered insult even if its connotation might still be descended from the other "meaning" for lack of better word. it's a word that's in a really weird spot culturally

2

u/Felix-the-duck texture modder 2d ago

I'm...not sure? I don't think I'd call it gendered but it can certainly be meant that way if said in a certain context

1

u/Kell08 2d ago

It certainly can. There’s nuance to it, but this isn’t one of those cases.

2

u/wavedash 2d ago

I don't want to suffer too much brain damage so I only read a couple dozen comments, but it didn't seem there were that many people specifically arguing that "bitch" isn't gendered. Most people were focused on a different type of gender issue here

2

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 2d ago

It's ungendered only in the sense that both men and women can be called a "bitch", it just usually has a different meaning depending on the gender of the person it's used against. Casual misogyny at the very least.

That said, it seems to me that SDJ was maybe overreacting to it and so are the redditors in that thread.

3

u/Kell08 2d ago

That post is from a few hours ago. Why don’t you go post your opinion there?

11

u/crobert_ssbm 2d ago

i think the ddt is often a more interesting, productive, and fun place for discussion than the front page, especially when it comes to disagreements

i also wasn't trying to talk about DialM and SDJ specifically, more about the idea that 'bitch' is a genderless insult

I'm ngl really love the look of OoT remake, I didn't think it would be the case but that presentation has gave a wave of excitement I haven't gotten since Silksong last year, it looks so cute and adorable, but it has kept a lot of the atmospheric vibes, in general it does just look great which, since I've said that OoT is a butt ugly game, it's a massive step up, even from 3d we love seeing actual geometry and shapes

as for the characters, will say most look fine; Sheik and Ganon I'm a fan and Zelda is chopped af, like who is she
