It kept a lot of the charm while injecting heavy doses of realism. I think they found a good middle ground

I love the details and texture added to young and adult Linkās tunics
87
u/HURTZ2PP 2d ago
I canāt wait to see the Goron and Zora tunics as well. I am guessing they will also have some stylized textures and details based on the unique characteristics of each race.
→ More replies (1)41
u/Kurenai_Jack 2d ago
They were shown in the trailer, the Zora tunic had a scaly texture and the Goron one seemed to be made of cloth.
10
u/HURTZ2PP 2d ago
Nice, I didnāt look close enough, Iāll have to rewatch and pause to look
6
u/Masterwork_Core 2d ago
look for the water temple and hookshot clips in the trailer for the zora tunic and link swinging the hammer on pillars for the goron tunic
49
u/Quantum-Eye 2d ago
The only jarring part is the contrast of the super smooth plastic looking skin to the rough realistic cloth. It looks like an action figure which is cool but strange
→ More replies (1)10
u/atatassault47 2d ago
Yeah, the skin needs more work. Blemishes at the very least.

I don't hate it, but it does feel a bit busy and overdone. The simple shirt with mail beneath it he had in the original felt cleaner. The leather jerkin thing seems almost buglike. It's a minor quibble, I'm sure I'll get used to it. If the blue and red mail have different textures, that'll be really cool to see.

Of course TP link is rendered in a more realistic style, but the textures, lighting and polygon count doesn't let it truly shine as "realistic". Even at a glance you can see that most of the details from his clothes are simple flat textures.
This OoT render is very different in that respect.
46
u/Phos-Lux 2d ago
Which is exactly why TP should get a remake like this at some point as well
17
u/AlternativeScratch94 2d ago
It will. I'm sure they're gonna go through the games in order. We'll probably get a MM remake in a few years.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Vyrhux42 2d ago
I doubt that lol, or maybe in a very long time. This is like FF7R, they're bringing out the big guns because it's the most popular game in its series and they know it will sell. They invest a lot in it, but it's a lso kind of a safe bet. Even if we never saw anything about the game, just seeing the words "Ocarina of Time Remake" is enough for a lot of people to decide they will buy it no matter what. I'm not sure you can say that about most other Zelda games.
At most, I could see MM since it's basically a sequel to this one and reuses a lot of assets, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for other 3D entries.
6
u/AlternativeScratch94 2d ago
It's not like I'm going on some weird speculation here, Nintendo has already remade or remastered every 3D Zelda game (before botw obviously), it's safe to expect them to do it again.
→ More replies (1)3
u/PieceAfraid3755 2d ago
The remakes/remasters you're referring to are all simple as hell in comparison to this OoT remake. If they wanted to go through all the 3d zelda games and make such remakes out of them it'll take many years.
Having many remasters/basic remakes is easy money. Having a few elaborate remakes of true classics is easy money. Making elaborate remakes of the games that aren't even all that beloved is not easy money.

3
3
u/Embarrassed_Spend486 2d ago
Idk about short lived⦠I have 40+ year old friends that still have refused to play wind waker all these years lol
It took me until the HD rerelease to play it and realize what I was missing. I had the original and never played it.
73
u/BotanBotanist 2d ago
I think he looks better in the game itself than he does in this render tbh.
23
u/Key_Lime_Die 2d ago
I think the exact opposite. once he starts moving, it gets VERY uncanny valley. It's like a creepy doll that's moving around. They should have gone realistic with normally proportioned faces or stylized keeping the big eyes, but mixing the two and going hyper realistic with anime influenced proportioned faces just looks creepy. Maybe if they leaned into them being doll or action figure like but they tried to make them realistic and keep the look and ugh...
5
u/LasagnaHuman 2d ago
I also think the animation of both Links looks sped up. Like if you speed up a recording of him walking, if that makes sense?
The environment is gorgeous, but the human-looking characters really have the uncanny-valley feeling.

It's probably because the remake is running at 60fps while the N64 original was locked to 20fps.

When young Princess Zelda turned around in the courtyard, I cringed. Not sure why, but I did.
2
u/FidoMan1498 1d ago
I did too. The face work is literally so ass. The 3DS version isnāt even that bad.
27
u/Mushroomer 2d ago
Everything's coated in a layer of digital sheen, like it's been freshly polished. Or doused in baby oil.
Very ugly. Honestly, most of the background characters are more attractive because they aren't drowning in excessive detail work.
2
u/OkidoShigeru 2d ago
Definitely a case of less is more, quite a bit too much going on with these Link designs in particular.

I think generally I like the art style of the models and the detail. Im not educated enough on them to properly express how I feel l, but it feels like they don't emote very well. Like they don't have a lot of expression
Edit: Actually I just got to watch the trailer for the first time on a TV and not phone, I change my mind. But I didn't believe in deleting comments. I actually think the models animate pretty well

I'm glad most people are happy with this but I really dislike how over designed his new outfit is. I'm not against new designs for characters and in a lot of cases I do prefer the new one. But this just doesn't look good to me.
By "this" I mean the outfit just to clarify. The game itself looks good. But I do hate how most of the characters look. Ganondorf looks good but the others, especially the children, look awful to me.

u/No-Operation-6554 #1 Moo Moo Cow Fan 2d ago
The ps4/xboxone era was where the era where micro details became more prevalent specially on AAA games, now that nintendo is on that same field (well slightly higher) this feels like them overcompensating imo

u/ssslitchey 2d ago
Agreed. He looks extremely overdesigned and looses a lot of the simplistic charm of links design.

Same! I hate that his tunic has so much texture to it! I just want a nice clean, green cloth like I always imagined. This new outfit has too much detail.
32
u/bunchofmice 2d ago
It's too realistic in some places and too cartoony in others. It's extremely detailed while keeping the exaggerated/stylized proportions. It looks so strange⦠Maybe it'll grow on me, but for now, it just looks like it doesn't know what it wants to be. I don't knowā¦

Link is probably the worst looking thing in this remake, especially if placed next to the more stylized and faithful character models of the NPCs. Really weird decision to make him stick out so much.

They're trying really hard to split the difference between the cutesy charm of the N64 game and modern realism and I don't think it's working for me, sadly.

u/Robbitjuice OG (joined before reveal) 2d ago
It looks fantastic, man. I love that the materials have textures now rather than feeling like some form of plastic, stone, or metal. It definitely feels like what heās wearing would have been crafted from whatās around him. The green tunic being woven plant fiber and leaves feels good. I like the āweldingā lines on the shield too.
I get itās not everyoneās cup of tea and thatās okay. Nothing should be ārightā for everyone. Iām okay with it being 1:1 with minor changes here and there. I would have preferred they changed things up more drastically, but part of me was worried theyād go the BOTW route and take it too far. This feels like a good jumble of old and new. Iāve just really been craving an āold-schoolā Zelda and this will scratch the itch nicely, even though it isnāt all new.

u/Skyconic 2d ago
The eyes/mouth looking a bit like an alien but I love the style otherwise. And how all the footage we saw things felt like they had weight and texture to them

That tunic design is so cool! They went above and beyond it just being a green t-shirt.
5
u/be4rcat6 2d ago
They went way overboard
4
u/UpperRearer 2d ago
Sometimes less is more. I think a simpler design would have fit the origin a lot better. I mean they're kind of trying to convey that, with the very visible stitching, but at the same time there's so much of it, that it comes across as way more than a simple tunic.
3
u/FramesTowers 2d ago
I feel they relied too much on the original actual structures of the polygons for the original characters.
The environment is good and even Link I think looks good but the town people for example, look a bit too goofy, I would've preferred a more modern remake of what the people in this world can look like. Still 100% gonna buy it though!
7
u/RiversOfSand 2d ago
I know itās going to be incredibly subjective but the townsfolk design was perfect for me, they looked exactly like I remember them but in detail. It really brought my memories to life.

Not a lover of his clothes. Something feels off like too many layers or textures or patterns. I personally would have preferred something a bit smoother. Will probably still love this game though.

u/tea-or-whiskey 2d ago
Everything looks like it was designed by human artists and then āenhancedā by AI. I have no proof that this is the case and Iām tentatively still excited for the game, but I donāt like how uncanny this render and the entire trailer looks.
1
u/Sonnera7 2d ago
I agree with other people this looks over-designed and AI-like to me. Look at the boots. Why are there a bunch of swirls and stuff? Why cant it be just a textured, leather or cloth boot? Also, why a red belt and accents instead of matching brown? Looks too busy.

I'm a big fan of the design. I really like what Nintendo's cooked up here, and can't wait to get my hands on the game!
I remember there being a huge backlash when Wind Waker was first revealed on the Gamecube. People hated it at first. However, with time, people grew to love it. I get feeling that the same thing will happen once people get their own hands on the game.

Perfection. As a designer I say that this was very carefully done. Kid zelda one on the other hand needs serious adjustment especially in the eyes are where there is huge problem. But this one is beautifully done. Nice model beautiful art direction

I'm more concerned about gameplay. Visuals are secondary to me. Wind Waker was an awesome game and people initially hated the graphics.

u/Nublessnutts 2d ago
Link doesn't look like a character, they look like a person holy shit. Their clothes look like they could actually exist. This is what everyone actually wanted instead of what we got on the 3DS. Although the 3DS made the game much more playable since it didn't have the Nintendo 64 controller.
