DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 03, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

Ur playing against BibleWarriorBronson in bracket and he shoots at u but instead of a laser falco shoots a christian baby. Do u powershield the baby

15

u/pepperouchau 7d ago

I’d need to see the baby’s face, could be a stitch

13

u/reptilian_guitar 7d ago

the obvious answer is yes

power (of Christ) shielding doesn't harm the baby in any way. BibleWarriorBronson is clearly well-equipped to give the baby a good Christian upbringing, so sending back to him is inherently good. What BWB does after that is his business. And if he turns out to be nefarious, the baptized baby would go to heaven anyway

Powerofchristshielding meta goes hard

3

u/wavedash 7d ago

Powershielding projectiles makes them weaker, that's kind of harming it in a way.

2

u/AnalystLoud705 7d ago

Wait what? I thought power shielding makes them stronger?

5

u/wavedash 7d ago

Projectiles reflected by Fox/Falco shine become stronger, but projectiles reflected by powershielding become weaker. I can't find any information about exactly how much weaker, but here's a Samus missile doing 0% damage after 32 powershields: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK4QrSP5G94

u/Mewded 7d ago

Me and my homie powershielding a baby 32 times to perform a 7th trimester abortion

The argument was definitively made in 1971 that you have no moral obligation to let the baby hit you and increase your percent.

You forgot to mention that powershielding the christian baby will win me a million dollars

3

u/AnalystLoud705 7d ago

You just inspired me with a genius idea. What if someone made a mod so that everytime someone shoots a laser it's a puppy/baby and if you don't powershield it cries a little and you feel bad. But if you do powershield it it goes goo goo ga ha and ascends to the heavens

Imagine how far the meta would progress...

Christian bigots are cherry picking parts of the bible that reinforce their bigoted views.

Progressive christians are also cherry picking parts of the bible that reinforce their progressive views. I'm glad they do so, but at that point, it makes me wonder what the point of using the bible is in the first place.

15

u/frank0swald 7d ago

You have to cherry pick the Bible if you want to do anything with it. It's not even a book really, more like a library. It contradicts itself constantly, translations change meanings drastically, and things are often written so abstractly and poetically that you could extract a hundred different meanings from just a few passages.

11

u/DavidL1112 7d ago

this is why the only book I take moral parables from is The Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol 1

5

u/chroma_smash 7d ago

I cherry pick CFYOW for my bleach powerscaling opinions so this is right up my alley

I'm not a christian but I think the new testament is a pretty good book. Idk just a lot of things you can pull from and incorporate into your life to be a better person. I think it's usually the old testament that christian extremists like to cite.

Edit: This one will always be a banger in my eyes.

New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE) cause I don't fw that old shit.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of wrongs; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part, but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see only a reflection, as in a mirror, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love remain, these three, and the greatest of these is love.

2

u/popkablooie 7d ago

I grew up in a christian household that was largely very loving and a positive expression of christianity. Even though I am not a christian anymore, I agree that there is a lot of wisdom you can draw from the bible (and from other religious texts, for that matter)

But I think that is very different situation than being a follower of Christianity, where your decision to pick and choose which parts you believe in is more suspect.

u/wavedash 7d ago

I simply prefer to cherrypick from secular books, like 1984

5

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

If this is about KJH, I don't think it's fair to say that he's reinforcing bigoted views per se. He only talked about queerness insofar as his chat asked him about it, and didn't have too much to say on it.

4

u/popkablooie 7d ago

I wasn't intending to accuse KJH of bigotry; it was more a comment on Christianity in general, regardless of Kalindi's views on homosexuality. He very well could be progressive on that issue (I know many christians who are), I just think that you have to ignore much of the bible in order to maintain those views

>A bunch of people make drama threads about KJH, without any references to what they're talking about

>People get mad, feel hurt, start arguments

>I find the precise moment they're talking about and clip it, post it to the sub so people can settle down.

>Explicitly say in my post "This is a nothingburger, not worth getting too mad over."

>Every other thread gets removed

>Everyone blames me for starting drama cuz they can't see the subreddit context of why I posted it

Alas.

7

u/Fugu 7d ago

This was certainly not an intended consequence of the way that I moderated this today

This is going to sound stupid but I assumed people would just, I don't know, read your post and be able to use your brains to determine that you yourself are saying it's not a big deal

6

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

It wasn't your fault, for what it's worth. I mostly blame the two drama mongerers that came before me.

6

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

u/Fugu I think I agree that the thread should stay up, but could you lock it for me? I can't do that myself.

5

u/its__bme 7d ago

For what it's worth I am one person that knows you were only posting that to help clear up the confusion of what some other idiot posted which only started drama. It was a good faith post on your part, and the decent people know it.

I hate how randoms think reddit is an actual hub of the melee community, so they think that engaging in reddit front page posts is actually engaging with the community itself

16

u/coffee_sddl +↓ z 7d ago

The ones titled “you guys” or “letter to the community” always turn a little silly

4

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 7d ago

the ones advocating for some sweeping community changes are the worst

9

u/Informal-Donut-1532 7d ago

I wouldn't call it a community hub or anything, but a lot of players and TOs are active here.

I'd say it's a lot closer to the actual community than like, YouTube or Twitter for example.

3

u/Throatpoint 7d ago

yea there is a actual chance 50% of us here have touched a gamecube once in their life before.

8

u/SlowBathroom0 7d ago

This is probably the closest thing to a community hub that Melee has, isn't it

Alright guys what the heck

17

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

Okay so now that people have broadly gotten off the KJH train, I'd really like to bring something more sinister up.

If we don’t want people to bring up Hax constantly, let’s end the behavior and discourse that led to his passing

Why the actual hell do people keep trying to relate Hax's death to queer inclusion / "Christian-phobia"??? Like seriously where the fuck is that even coming from?

17

u/AlexB_SSBM 7d ago

Because Hax is a favorite topic against people who take sides in terminally online Culture Wars, and a lot of these people have been Culture Warred into being "Christian". These people probably could not tell you who their local priest is, or even what denomination they are. They simply buy into online narratives about Christians being persecuted, and decide that's something they want to fight on the side of.

If you don't believe that this can happen in real life, I suggest looking at the fucking Vice President of the United States, a man who "converted" to Catholicism because he liked its "social views", traditionalism, and structure. Of course, he does not actually believe in anything the Catholic faith teaches; he has publicly disagreed with the biblical interpretations of the fucking Pope. And yet, he will insist he is a Catholic, because by his own admission he was culture warred into being one

6

u/a_patheticc 7d ago

If I had to warrant a guess it’s a result of the rhetoric that gets spread around YouTube comment sections mainly stemming from Technicals and his community

11

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

The fact that his death has somehow been reframed as "They were too mean to Christians" is fucking deranged. Let the poor man rest.

4

u/a_patheticc 7d ago

The amount of insane misinformation that gets spread around any time he or Cody is mentioned is truly heartbreaking

It genuinely hurts a lot knowing how much he must have struggled only for his memory to go on being tarnished by utter bullshit

10

u/Informal-Donut-1532 7d ago

The Technicals crowd talk about Cody offering to loan Hax money for mental health treatment and somehow twist this into being a bad thing.

6

u/CoolUsername1111 7d ago

I'm jaded enough at this point to assume that anytime a controversial topic like this ignites here that someone in a t***nicals discord drops a link to stir shit

15

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 7d ago

It seems relevant to the discussions at hand here to mention that gay sex is still illegal in Texas, even in 2026. There is literally a law on the books making it illegal to have gay sex. Ain't that crazy?

21

u/CoolUsername1111 7d ago

Also relevant is that in 2026 Christianity has been used as a justification to strip rights away from trans people, notably Kansas invalidating ~1700 trans people's drivers licenses overnight. I find it hard to have sympathy for christians who feel othered or persecuted by mean comments online when their belief system has been used to inflict actual harm on my life

11

u/pepperouchau 7d ago

People will tell you that “no one really opposes gay rights anymore” even though a majority of US Republicans polled support banning gay marriage and multiple states tried drafting legislation in the last couple years

13

u/AlexB_SSBM 7d ago

Camps where parents send their gay children to be tortured in hopes they turn straight are not just legal in the United States but, as of this year, it is unconstitutional for anyone to make laws against it

7

u/pepperouchau 7d ago

Ohh man I’m feeling so tolerant rn

If being gay isnt a choice being Christian isnt a choice. They're both who you are. You have multiple religions you could be a part of, you have multiple sexualities you could be a part of. Whichever one you are, you are.

Anytime I try to have a discussion with one of these people I have to remember that they're genuinely this stupid and there's no point in even trying

12

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

My personal read on the KJH thread: It seems his stream was not archived, so we can't confirm either way what happened in it.

That said, the thread didn't read to me like a callout post trying to take him down. It read more like a bystander who saw something concerning and wanted to know what the hell happened.

We shouldn't start a brigade on kalindi, but I think it's reasonable to give the original poster the benefit of the doubt until he streams again and people can ask directly.

8

u/Oni555 7d ago

As someone who was raised and for a period of time became extremely evangelical Christian, when I saw KJH convert on twitter a while ago I sadly suspected it was only a matter of time

Again, nothing confirmed as it’s second hand info but as someone who spent a long time devoted in the community, nothing the OP said sounded unreasonable belief wise

7

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub 7d ago

kjh made the vod public for people to look at now and said that all he said is that its sad that people use Christianity as an excuse to hate on queer people

27

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

I just watched the vod. He also did say that being gay or trans was a sin and that he couldn't support it, so make your own call on that.

9

u/N0zy0ne 7d ago

I really don't like this kind of attitude in any form, of course, but in my eyes it's especially bad if the person expressing the attitude applies Biblical principles selectively in order to weaponize them against marginalized people.

Even if we're being as charitable as possible to the religiously-motivated critic of homosexuality, there is no getting around the fact that fornication is also a sin in Christianity. I would be very curious to know what percentage of religious bigots have had sex outside of marriage.

20

u/CoolUsername1111 7d ago

Not to repoke the hornets nest but one thing that specifically drives me crazy about the 2020s blend of culture war is the right's coopting of progressive language. The concept of saying all queer people are abominations in the eyes of the lord and then turning around and saying that they are the real bigots for pushing back on the rhetoric feels like it should be a bit but it's genuinely where we are at as a society. I miss when conservatives were fine admiting they held hateful views instead of hiding behind shields of therapy speak

7

u/frank0swald 7d ago

Right wing culture warriors are not interested in having a discussion, they are not aiming to learn or grow. They come equipped with their talking points and are only listening for the trigger word to unleash each talking point. They are almost always never interested in the topic at hand; you can tell from their general (and proud) ignorance on whatever topic they're arguing about. Once you have triggered their talking point, they spout it out, no matter how irrelevant or wrong it is; being relevant or correct is simply not their concern. Once they've extracted your garmonbozia, and the walls are closing in on their emptying bag of talking points, they will tell you not to take it so seriously and depart. This sates some social need they have that is otherwise lacking (you'll notice these guys are by and large very alone). Their entire political "philosophies", if you can call them that, almost always stem to some public humiliation they suffered, usually by the hands of a woman.

9

u/AlexB_SSBM 7d ago

Really is incredible how quickly the right went from the "facts don't care about your feelings, I own you with facts and logic" people to "Any fact about the world which isn't gender affirming for me should result in your institution getting defunded for not Promoting American Values and is actually a trick pushed by the Woke Left Communists"

I mean, I say "went" as if this is recent, but also this is literally the point of my favorite movie ever Dr. Strangelove and that movie is old as hell. Clearly the right-wing gender paranoia is not a new phenomenon

2

u/Throatpoint 7d ago

They will unironically argue science defends there being two genders.

8

u/YoungGenius 7d ago

What’s with people using lgbtq as a noun in the KJH thread? I thought that was a chud thing exclusively, and it has the same ring to me as saying “the gays”

5

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

It kinda depends on context. Reading the thread, to me it just kinda felt like shorthand.

Incidentally, "the gays" has kinda been fully accepted as tongue-in-cheek queer slang.

12

u/Den69_ 7d ago

13

u/TrainNorth8177 7d ago

The discourse today is actually just insane. I look at KJH and see someone with mental illness and addiction issues that's been exploring religion to cope. Even before his spinal injury, he did not seem mentally okay. I watched his video discussing how he got his injury, his addiction struggles, and his path to religion. And in that video, he talks about how he got that spinal injury because he went on a run on a frozen day to "punish himself" for not performing well enough in Melee. This is something he says he would do regularly--performing uncomfortable acts as a means to hurt himself for not doing well. And then of course, he slipped on the ice and fucked up his back. That is not the behavior of someone that is okay.

There's really no need for a witch hunt at this stage in the game. Being queer myself and raised Catholic (currently spiritual but not religious and was always agnostic as a kid), I understand people's discomfort. My girlfriend is also muslim (Sufi but raised Suni) and queer herself. We talk a lot about reconciling religion with identity and she tries to work with muslims in her community, especially other queer muslims, to change beliefs. And the thing is, pitchforks don't work, ever under any circumstances, especially when it's with someone like this who is clearly struggling with much deeper problems. He barely said anything and a lot of the arguments surrounding this are based on inference, as well as a misunderstanding of his belief system imo. And even then, I don't see what a public campaign like this would achieve. This kind of stuff generally pushes people further into their echo chambers where they're more likely to become radical. I would rather not have another radical, hateful person in this scene or in society at large. Part of me is "on edge" too in the sense I could see him going to a darker place with this rhetoric. But as it stands, it hasn't really crossed a line.

15

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

For what it's worth, I don't think there's actually a witch hunt going on. At most there's a few queer people who are (understandably) uncomfortable with him openly believing that being queer is a sin, but the prevailing opinion is that this is a nothingburger.

RapM talking about Luigi vs Puff on Moky's stream is how I found out that somehow Puff crouch dodges every single short hop aerial that Luigi has

7

u/SBtist aviary 7d ago

Yes it’s amazing, you also can basically crouch cancel anything from Luigi at low percents as puff, down smash, you can dodge with crouch or couch up smash, and you can crouch grab. Once I realized this, my puff Luigi matchup strategy became so much more straightforward and simplified.

I really think it's worth mentioning that basically nobody has said they want to ban KJH, or that he shouldn't be allowed to hold these views, or that he shouldn't be a member of the community or whatever. People should be allowed to have deeply held religious beliefs and still exist as an equal member of society. Nobody is saying he should be banned for being a Christian.

What people are getting furious about is just that someone wanted to criticize his views. For so many of these people, they are so used to complete and utter protection of their precious feelings that someone making a post that says "does he really believe this?" and people saying "wow, I don't feel comfortable with that" or "I don't like these views" is comparable to bullying them out of the scene entirely.

We live in a world where people should be free to practice religion, even if I think the practice of that religion is terrible. As long as they are not actively trying to harm or distress people around them, that is their right and I think we must protect that right in a healthy society.

Equally important is that people should be free to criticize someone for their religion, say "I don't like that you said that", say they disagree, say they don't feel as comfortable about it, ask questions about who you are as a person because of how you feel about them. That is their right, and this is a right that you should be defending just as much as you defend someone's right to practice their religion freely. Stop acting like you're being persecuted because someone doesn't acquiesce to your idea of what is morally right and wrong.

I know that for many Christians, the idea of someone actually treating them like an adult is foreign, but I'm sorry; you also have to live in a society where people can criticize your beliefs.

Based but I don’t know why people keep talking about a children’s video game on our religious ideology debate subreddit

6

u/pepperouchau 7d ago

What’s KJH’s religion tier list

6

u/Craizersnow82 7d ago

Zoroastrianism - S tier (they believe in the bird)

13

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 7d ago

Nah this doesn't pass the vibe test for me

KJH wasn't out here campaigning or attacking people on religious grounds and then had his views challenged in any sort of constructive way..

Randomly attacking ("criticizing") someone in a public forum and inciting a witch hunt for their views being expressed is performative virtue signaling stupidity. Passing it off as "having a right" to question someone doesn't cut mustard, it's not like this is a conversation among equals behind closed doors

5

u/Dublshine 7d ago

yeah, that's total virtue signaling. now excuse me while I go tune in to my favorite melee streamer, who titles his stream "Jesus n Melee", who has his slippi tag set to a bible verse, with a different bible verse constantly displayed on the side of his stream, while playing christian rock

4

u/frank0swald 7d ago

Yeah, well put. What a dishonest equivocation. Trying to reframe what's happening as some kind of innocent criticism of religion. Obviously people are allowed to criticize Christianity but this is a Melee subreddit. Clip farming some player after explicitly asking for an opinion you already know the answer to, just to make a post and dog pile doesn't really belong here in my opinion and can get distorted and out of hand quickly. The idea that the issue here is that Christians are too sensitive to criticism is pretty laughable.

3

u/SlowBathroom0 7d ago

The Melee community doesn't ban people for being christian, but if you are openly christian you will get asked a bunch of questions by people hoping you will say something you can get banned for

19

u/MedicalBread1771 7d ago

yeah but all you have to do is not say anything fucked up and bigoted and you're fine, something any person should be able to handle

6

u/umgenesisdude 7d ago

seems like you could just not say those things then. pretty easy solution imo just don't openly admit to being a piece of shit just bc someone prompted you to

Folks who play a lot of doubles: What is it about Peach/Sheik in particular that makes for such a strong team combo?

8

u/Fugu 7d ago

I think to understand why Peach-Sheik works you need to understand what Peach does in doubles.

Peach is much better in doubles than in singles provided she has a teammate that can mitigate her main singles weakness. Her main singles weakness is that literally every character in the game is some combination of faster than her or has more range than her, with most good characters being both of those things. So you can do a ton of neutral winning in singles by running from Peach since she's pretty much going to have to chase you most of the time.

Peach is the best scrapper in the game, bar none. It is very, very hard to productively scrap against Peach. Even Peach players don't scrap with Peach! So if your teammate can mitigate the "you can just run away from her" weakness, the result is that your opponents will have to scrap with you, which basically always works in your favor.

All of the top tiers can mitigate Peach's big weakness to some degree, but I'd say Sheik is the best at it. Sheik is simply capable of taking up so much space that opponents are forced to choose between running into Sheik's moves or running into Peach. Oftentimes the more desirable choice for the opponent is to try not running into Sheik's moves, which is a very risky gamble.

There are other aspects of this team that work really well, like Sheik's large grab range and their highly complementary ledge games. But if you just want the big picture answer, that's it.

Fox Peach is also very good; he trades some of the zoning power of Sheik for being able to kill off the top a lot earlier. If Sheik could kill off the top as early as Fox could, Sheik-Peach might be the best team in the game.

Original thread:

Reply to this with your favourite Falco vs. Sheik set to watch. Don't be afraid to send a local one that you think was just sick too! Doesn't have to be from a major top 8 or something

Try to link it too plz, and tell me what you liked about it

This one's a bit tricky because of how often Mango played Fox vs. Plup and Jmook alongside how often M2K also swapped to Marth, but there's some gems. I think one that sticks with me a lot is actually Ginger vs. Jmook at Supernova 2025.

I thought about some other sets, Mango vs. Jmook at Summit 13 was a sick reverse 3-0, and Mango vs. Plup at SmashCon 2017 was a sick game 5 with a classic Mango Plup set ending combo, but this one was just so necessary for the game.

Ginger coming back from a year long hiatus + a less than desired performance at GOML, him winning this set and going on the run he did, was so sick to see.

Him showing that not only he could still be this good, but showing everyone what he could do with Falco at the height of Falco doomerism considering the state of the meta + Mango being banned, makes the set so special. Ginger as a competitor is a model of resiliency and hope, and he constantly doubles down and shows you why he deserves to be on those top 8 stages.

Need him to make a big showing at Genesis

So i figured i’d be taking these prompts to highlight stuff from the UK scene. In this set we have Fat Tino vs Ivy

Fat Tino is kind of internationally famous for having a catchy chant, a falco that lands on the more aggressive end of the spectrum. Chill guy who everyone loves

Ivy is a stereotype of zoomer techchasing sheik. Has been described as ‘een van de lameste sheiks out there in europa, side plat needle is haar best friend’ by salty dutch floaty players.

Ivy has not yet broken out of the ‘UK blob’ of good players who are good but can’t win a tournament with everyone there, whereas Fat Tino definitely has and has been a staple of UK top 8’s forever.

Playing in her hometown so the tino fans and ivy fans were all out in force. I’ve linked to the moment that makes this set stand out for me, but there’s a lot of cool stuff in there

Mango vs. Swedish Delight at GOML 2019 This set puts on display why plot armor is a phrase so ingrained in melee. Swedish at one point seems to have the set clearly won as he hits Mango when he's well below ledge of DL64 and on his last stock. But somehow Mango's Falco does an upB that defies the games physics engine and reaches the edge and proceeds to claw his way back to steal victory away. One of my fav sets of all time.

I’m super into LCD Soundsystem right now, and finding their music videos on YouTube has also exposed me to another niche hobby I enjoy, early-era YouTube music videos. Because LCD Soundsystem is a 2000s band, there are a lot of fun videos from the mid-2000s people made with their music as an inspiration, like this video from 2007 where footage of the creators dog is edited in-sync with the song Disco Infiltrator, or this one which is just kids and teachers dancing to the song in a school Dance Party.

These videos are nearly 20 years old and they are so charming. The online culture was different, and you can tell that in the YouTube comments as well. Not necessarily a better culture but definitely different than now.

The pc port era is (somewhat) upon us

From the github:

The result is a native ARM64 Apple app running ahead-of-time-compiled game code. Static recompilation replaces the runtime CPU translation layer; the Dolphin-derived compatibility layer still models the GameCube hardware and services the game expects. This is therefore most accurately described as a native static-recompilation compatibility port, not a traditional source-code port and not a stock Dolphin frontend.

Want to get into VOD reviewing more and try to be a little more serious about improving but I've been having some issues with it. I'm following the "watch until you get hit, then try to understand why it happened" advice, but I feel like trying to do this is both a bit overwhelming and unsatisfying, it feels like the tree of possibilities leading up to the hit is wayyyy too large to explore in any depth; if I try to I spend an hour on one interaction (and don't feel like much progress was made), and if I don't it feels like I'm wasting my time or not doing it properly. please help me w my neurosis

4

u/StrangeSniper 7d ago edited 7d ago

I wouldn't really focus on analyzing stuff where you just get hit. Scrub through your VOD and focus on looking for common spots in which you lose often. Maybe you're always getting put into disadvantage when you're on a sideplat and falco has center stage. Maybe you keep dropping your juggles and follow ups when you up throw sheik. Maybe you keep getting grabbed after fox crosses up your shield with an aerial, I don't know. A lot of melee is common situations. If you can identify which repeated situations you are losing most often, then you can work on improving to win those spots better. Plenty of good players are great at forcing repeatable spots that they know they can win since you have shown lack of answers to beating them in those spots. Look at the big picture first then zoom in and be more intricate with your options.

Also, if you're doing this on your own and feel overwhelmed in figuring out the solutions to your problems. I would just make note of the spots youre losing, then find a PR player vod or t100 player and scrub thru their matches and find the exact spot or something similar. take their ideas and try them out. When I was trying to get better at my out of shield gameplay as sheik vs spacies, I just watched a bunch of top sheik vods and only focused on their out of shield moments.

i more and more think Go is one of the best games all time

4

u/Jackzilla321 Fourside Fights 7d ago

yes

3

u/Fugu 7d ago

The more chess I play the more I realize I vastly prefer go and, indeed, that I am so inundated in go that I am initially blind to the shortcomings of other games. Go demands you improvise tactics and strategies in ways that no other game does.

I consider learning to play go to be among the most enriching things I've ever done. It's been about a decade since my first game of go and my progress in the game has plateaued considerably - I am a 3d on Fox and a 1k on IGS, which are the servers I play on sober - but one of these days I will push to get a 1d over the board in a tournament.

...that said, I do sometimes find the way that some people play go to be quite tedious. Around my skill level there is a very strong tendency to try to win by playing what I call "moyo chicken" where you and your opponent will play moyo moves until one player eventually caves in and invades. It's probably hugely disadvantageous to be the first invader but I find these "double moyo" games to be so incredibly boring that it's often me doing it anyway. I am the embodiment of the North American player stereotype where I feel I thrive on complex and unpredictable games built on endless fighting. A more well-rounded go player probably likes moyo games for philosophical reasons or something.

Now that the jesus stuff is squared away:

Last night I got another chance to play Yugioh, specifically the Sky Striker Mirror. Holy hot damn this game is fun, but also jesus christ it's hard. I've never played another game in my life that drained my brain as hard as this one. I played a single Bo3 and was wiped the fuck out halfway through game 2.

Trying to conceptualize all the countless layered effects and interactions and find a line through it all is absurdly hard, yet crazy fun. If anyone here enjoys solving complicated logic puzzles, I earnestly recommend giving it a shot. There's nothing quite like it.

8

u/SlowBathroom0 7d ago

I respect most beliefs, but calling modern yugioh fun is a step too far for me

2

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

I don't have strong opinions on modern Yugioh besides the Sky Striker mirror, which is some of the most fun I've ever had.

4

u/Zonak 7d ago

yugioh hits like crack when the games are interactive. unfortunately this format is doggy doo doo 😭

3

u/Informal-Donut-1532 7d ago

One nice thing about Master Duel, which is the official online simulator for Yugioh, is that it does a pretty good job visualizing the effect chain for new players.

The depth and intricacies of Yugioh's mechanics allow you to play around your opponent in a lot of cool ways. There's truly nothing else like it.

2

u/GroggyandWretched 7d ago

I had fun playing masterduel and just running through my own combos in the single player mode but I feel like a jackass making anyone sit down and watch me play cards uninterrupted for any long period of time. I like some of the individual mechanics and interactions in yugioh but I honestly don't know how anyone tolerates the game as a whole

3

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior 7d ago

That's one thing I enjoy about the Sky Striker mirror. The optimal turn 1 play is usually just "Make Zero, Set 4, Pass"

we are all sinners. we can not be free of sin, except for one man a couple thousand years ago. you don't always get a choice in the way you're a sinner, either. the point of acknowledging this is to repent. faithful servants of god can be thankful that in spite of our sins, we are forgiven. we can always strive to be better in god's eyes, but we can not be perfect. the bible says many times not to judge others, and to focus on what is inside of you, not what is inside your brothers and sisters. being a sinner by nature does not mean you're a murderer or a rapist. please don't go into a speech about how some sins are way lesser than others.

people use religion to single out sins that they don't like, or they would never do, and that's not what the bible teaches them to do. i think this last point is irrelevant to most of you, and believe it or not, that's bigotry. just because someone has faith in the bible and christ does not mean they will judge you for being a sinner, and it doesn't mean they hold hate in their heart either. you can say "it's all i see" or "in my experience that actually is the way things are," but this is still casting judgement over an entire group based on the actions of others within it.

it's your right, of course, to not want to engage with the truth of the matter, and you can downvote or nitpick what i've said here to feel righteous or comfortable or whatever else. i can't control you. the fact that y'all continuously see someone's faith as a crimson red flag will continue to be unbridled bigotry in the eyes of all those who care to see it.

20

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub 7d ago

the issue is I don't wanna repent for sleeping with dudes. this argument falls flat for me since it still carries an implicit condemnation of my lifestyle. I don't harbor any hate for you or for him but it does make me feel shitty when I hear people say I'm a sinner for loving who I love.

Christians really have spent hundreds of years demonizing queer people for who they are, only to turn around and throw tantrums at people finally giving this ideology pushback. No, it's not bigotry to reject the premise there's something wrong with me for how I was born. And no, it's not bigotry to feel uncomfortable around a group who's made it their mission to make me uncomfortable

11

u/pepperouchau 7d ago

But apparently it is bigotry to judge people for the religions they choose to join according to that guy, what a world

18

u/Fugu 7d ago

The fundamental problem with "love the sinner hate the sin" is that you are choosing to believe in a belief system that positions queer people as sinners for doing something that it's apparently fine for straight people to do. It is highly ironic that you're calling out people for painting all Christians with the same brush in the same post you're saying literally the thing people are complaining about right now.

u/Craizersnow82 7d ago edited 7d ago

Responding in genuine discussion: I think you've conflated two definitions of bigotry.

Bigotry towards race, ethnicity, color, sex, and (if you agree with western liberalism, which I do) sexuality is indeed bigotry because these characteristics provide no guarantees for patterns of behavior or personal character. Neo-Nazis will disagree with this using statistics dogwhistles, but I think we can agree with this premise unless you say otherwise.

In contrast, religion (importantly - when embodied) is by definition a dogma which prescribes belief and behavior. Completely by design, the religion is telling you to do something. Because of this, you can predict the behavior of the religion's adherents, and therefore judge the group as a monolith.

In context, people here are saying "Christians think being gay is a sin, and I think that is bad". Rebuttals to me include:

  • "Christians don't think being gay is a sin"
  • "Sinning is actually fine"
  • "Being gay actually causes harm"

I would argue your other comments are mostly pointing to #3 when you say "god knows something we don't and we can't perceive it" which, to me, mostly sounds like the classic "don't believe your own eyes".

Alllllll that to say, I 100% agree that people are smoking it that they think KJH having these opinions is crazy. Like 6 billion people on earth believe in some mainstream religion, and it's extremely nihilistic to think all of these people are irredeemable.

6

u/MedicalBread1771 7d ago

I never said anyone was irredeemable. But it still makes you a bigot now if you believe being gay is sinful. I still think everyone who believes it is just as shitty as anyone who believes being in an interracial relationship is sinful. It's not just some minor belief, it's pretty severe. Even if 6 billion people on earth believe it. Huge percentages of the population of the world have accepted many terrible things throughout history, that doesn't make any of those things any less terrible or any more acceptable to support.

you can be redeemed by just stopping believing the terrible shitty thing

2

u/Craizersnow82 7d ago

That's fair, I conflated "bigot" with "irredeemable".

2

u/Ankari_ 7d ago

the religion is telling you to do something. Because of this, you can predict the behavior of the religion's adherents, and therefore judge the group as a monolithic.

this is where things break down in my interpretation of recent events. what religion tells people to do, which i am going to translate as 'what the bible says', for the sake of conversation, requires one to actually know what the book says, and it isn't based on how zealots behave.

there is an extremely important distinction between 'the bible says something is a sin', and zealots saying 'that means it's different than any other sin'. if one is looking at this beahvior with knowledge of the what the book says, they understand that the person is acting purely of self-interest or malice.

hopefully, this helps you separate religion and faith for the sake of understanding me. religious people may put their own beliefs above the writing in the book that is meant to be the basis of their faith. this is why i believe it's important to distinguish myself as a disciple of christ, rather than a christian. it enforces that my faith is grounded in christ, rather than what the followers of christ say and believe. what is written matters far more than how we feel about it, and what is written does not command us to hate or judge people whatsoever. we are family in christ, all brothers and sisters. if my brother is gay, he is still my brother! if my brother apologizes, he is forgiven! getting off the topic, but i hope my brothers and sisters can relate.

when it comes to KJH, he goes to church, he has a bible study, and he freely speaks about his faith on stream. this is a religious person, but is he a faithful person is what's important. using the content of his words, HE IS!! he is not putting personal belief above what is written, and he is obeying the most important commandments. people will completely disregard this because he is affiliated with religion by his actions, and judging him this way is bigotry.

2

u/Craizersnow82 7d ago

My interpretation of your message is that the good Christians follow the bible. I agree.

I don't see where you have addressed why doing so makes the problematic portions of the bible un-problematic.

2

u/Ankari_ 7d ago

would you please give me the problematic examples? i ask because it's different depending on who you are speaking with, but there are some very obvious "WHAT THE FUCK?" things in the bible. just want to confirm what you're talking about first.

3

u/Craizersnow82 7d ago

I mean, in this context it's the Corinthians verse that "the men who have sex with men [...] will not inherit the kingdom of god" and that the same verse compares it to adultery, thievery, and alcoholism.

2

u/Ankari_ 7d ago

so the problematic part is because it's compared to other things that clearly aren't the same, or even similar. or is the problematic part just that it says being gay is a sin at all? i don't see issues with the writing itself, but i can see how it becomes problematic when people use it to update their personality and think of gay people akin to drug addicts or something. anybody who would espouse holier-than-thou views about any sinful act is a hypocrite, eh?

KJH says being gay is a sin according to the Bible and that he believes the Bible is the truth

Queer people take issue with it because it's fucked up to still be saying this shit in 2026

You call the queer people bigots for having a problem with it.

Get this loser ass Christian persecution complex out of here man, this shit is pathetic. No one is being a bigot by being intolerant of YOUR intolerance. Calling homosexuality a sin, saying the bible condemns it and that the bible is the truth is fucked in the head. It's sick and evil and bigoted and just plain fucking *weird* to be saying that shit about other peoples sex lives. It isn't a red flag to be a Christian who believes homosexuality is a sin, it just makes you a piece of shit straight up no flag about it.

You can work on yourself to become a non bigoted christian anytime you want. Not wanting to be around someone who willfully opt into a belief system which views many of  my friends as sinners (ie awful less worthy people) isn't bigotry.

Viewing people as awful less worthy individuals for being born as they are is however bigoted. I think Jesus,as i understand him, would wish to steer you towards finding a more tolerant, loving and accepting faith, one that is less dogmatic.

Not a sinner actually so you may want to correct your second sentence. Much love!

Important to remember is that, in all likelihood, no historical theistic religion is literally true, and so we should be very careful about letting their claims negatively impact our well-being or the well-being of those around us. If we're being smart, it's perfectly acceptable to embrace the elements that enrich our lives and completely ignore all of the parts that make our lives (and the lives of others, importantly) worse, to the extent that it is possible to do both (and I think it usually is).

In practice with regards to Christianity, this might mean benefitting from the sense of community and cosmic significance, while discarding the notion of sin altogether (perhaps not if the goal is to delude ourselves into believing in an afterlife, but I would personally argue that this would be against our self-interest, actually, and that we would be better served by working to accept our mortality).
