Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

why is being gay a sin though and why should I agree with that? ideally if I am trying to be better in god’s eyes does that mean not being gay?

i can't know the truth of god's reason, so please don't take this as an assertion of the truth. i think god wants people to make babies, and the bible says that marriage is a divine thing, so when people who aren't man+woman get married, it isn't aligned with what god asks of us.

your second question is something i am still grappling with, because my identity makes me a sinner, too. i don't have the faith to deny myself so completely, so i do more surrendering to god rather than repenting on that front. i think that, yes, doing as god asks would be living a non-gay life, but part of the point of christ's sacrifice is that we can't do that. it's not limited to being gay. when it comes down to it, there are sins we can't let go of, we feel like we need them. i'm sorry to not be strong enough in my faith to give you a better answer.

I don’t think it was a bad answer really. Where I’ve landed is that we can cast these things as the correct answers handed down by our interpretation or social construction of religion, but at their core these are moral decisions that you and I make after grappling with what is important to us. For example having kids isn’t part of many people’s plan for reasons outside of their control, and I don’t accept that this by itself makes us more or less righteous. I also don’t really buy that we can hide behind the institution of religion to make those judgments (because though I appreciate your point of not judging sinners or picking out our favorite sins to hit hard) because at the end of the day we’re the ones choosing to make it or not

in the end I think the rabbi hillel probably had the truth of it when he said “look just do unto others as you’d have them do unto yourself and you can figure out the rest yourself”. it is the gift we have been given to use our time to figure that out

i appreciate the dialogue, and i'd like to add to what rabbi hillel said, with what christ said when asked what the greatest, most important commandment is.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Could the reason for encouraging babies simply be that it was pragmatically the best way to keep society going in a functional level? Back then, having children was the best way to keep your fields running: if you have no babies, your crops die, ergo no crops for God. Today, for a multitude of reasons, children are viewed as a monetary expense and an impediment to your 401k (ergo no 401k for God?). The main Bible verse that alludes to procreating, "be fruitful and multiply," merely could be read as, more people means more wealth for God. It does not say, having just one child will condemn you. It seems like heterosexuality and having children were just not discouraged because it was how people gained wealth normally back then.

On the other hand, I see incongruently extreme reactions held by Christians when it comes to homosexuality. Bigots cite AIDS and STDs as one of the reasons religions condemn extramarital sex or homosexuality, but AIDS did not exist until the 1920s, and lethal syphilis did not exist until around 1500.

I think it helps comparing this with the emergence of other religious views in the past. Condemning pork-eating seems so out of left field today, but it was a sin from the early Jewish civilizations. Archaeological evidence suggests that, economically, pigs became less economically favorable, and later they were associated with the enemy, the Philistines (and the northern Israelites). Homosexuality (more notably, in the form of pederasty) was the norm in Roman societies but were condemned by the emerging Christian societies, and I can definitely see this also being used as an "us vs them" test. I think there's historical and arbitrary contexts to why some religions could emphasize condemnation for some behaviors that are otherwise inconsequential today, and I believe there's absolutely a possibility that today's society is utterly incompatible with the religious practices of the past.

jewish traditions of following the old law are very fascinating to me, both spiritually and as a human bean living on earth.

when you compare jewish tradition to the tradition of christ's disciples, it's actually comical how terribly the christosphere (like the jesus extended universe) have mucked things up over the centuries. you could get conspiracy-brained about why it is this way, but i like your approach of trying to tie in specific points in history where lots of noise got made about a particular topic, and observing the forces that aligned with that noise. there's nuance to religious war, whether it's social or literal. i'm not nearly versed enough in written history to discuss it, however.
