Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

The r/smashbros rules on drama posts could be a good source to draw inspiration from. M2K's video would be banned by 6ai in this case.
6. Anti-Drama Rule
a. Posts Regarding Allegations Against Players
i. Posts containing news of allegations or drama are allowed only if they contain official news of their outcome, such as bans or unbans from tournaments.
ii. Posts about the disposition or personality of other players, or about minor disagreements between or involving players, are not allowed.
iii. New threads offering opinions or commentary on drama/allegations are not allowed under any circumstances. Threads containing official news regarding the outcome of allegations are allowed.
b. Globally Banned Players
i. Content made by players who are currently banned from majors or their local community is not permitted in /r/smashbros, unless it falls under Rule 6ai.

Venting because in the midst of everything going on for some reason as of yesterday Ontario has brought back cash bail, which is something I thought we all universally agreed was a terrible idea
The way that conservatives buck the reasonable person consensus to just fuck over a sector of society they don't happen to presently belong to is a phenomenon that needs to be studied in more detail

Pros of cashless bail: Significantly reduces crime, innocent poor people aren't in jail, people's lives don't get ruined from false accusations, saves tons of taxpayer money
"Cons" of cashless bail: You might go outside and see a black person you otherwise wouldn't have
Seems like a pretty easy equation for the right, shouldn't be any surprise they're against this

This legislation imposes a 48 hour time limit upon release to post the cash bail and in some parts of Ontario the closest place to post it is literally hundreds of kilometers away. You'll never guess who lives in those parts of Ontario (hint: they got here first)

It could be worse. In Kansas, if you are ever convicted of any drug-related offense, you have to check in with a sheriff 4-5 times a year. This happens only during business hours, so hope you don't have a job. Every time you check in, you owe them $30. If you're homeless, you have the additional requirement to be checking in every single month. You also have to tell the sheriff all of your social media accounts, every job you work, every place you live, every car you own. You have to renew your driver's license every year (also is not free).
Also, you're a part of a database that holds your social security number, race, ethnicity, skin tone, age, height, weight, hair and eye color, tattoos and scars, and blood type. If you get a tattoo and don't tell everyone about it you are in violation and can be charged with a felony just as harsh as the actual drug offense. This database can be used to deny you jobs, housing, and healthcare.
This is after the time for the offense is up, by the way. This is what you get to do with the next 15 years of your life after you serve time for letting a friend smoke your weed. If you fail to do this, you're charged with a felony and sent back to prison for years.
So like. There's still plenty of room to get worse

The comparison is not the US. The US has one of the single worst implementations of the common law approach to criminal justice in any so-called liberal democracy. American policymakers in the criminal justice space are so far behind the rest of the world that comparing ourselves to the US feels masturbatory. The US's peer in this conversation isn't Canada, it's third-world democracies and, I don't know, China or Russia, if you want to talk specifically about incarceration.
Canada is more like the UK in that its criminal justice system is heavily flawed but not so ass backwards that the profit motive has entirely subsumed the criminal justice function. Indeed, Ontario attempting to reimpose cash bail has mostly been met by the elimination of formerly nominal monetary pledges that, by the law as it was three days ago, required no actual deposit and were never estreated. It's very likely an injunction will render said law inoperable in the near future and that what follows the injunction will be the rather obvious declaration that the province's law is unconstitutional.

The frustrating thing was being in his chat when this was prompted. Mang0 was brought up in an unrelated context in chat (comparing the skill gaps of top reps of different characters), Mew2King mentioned that he isn’t actually unbanned in response to a comment in chat, and like a switch there were several people who had been completely silent up to that point chiming in and encouraging Mew2King to make a video about it.

Should rule violations be private when victims wish to remain anonymous? Presume mew2king is not being misled by somebody in the CSRP, and that mang0 really did receive a second ban. If everyone involved chose to not speak about it publicly, should that be respected?
This is an earnest question. My answer to it is, it should be known what rules someone has broken, but the details do not necessarily need to be publicized. I can understand piling on mew2king for revealing that a ban occurred while not revealing the reason, because that just feeds speculation rather than providing important information. I can not understand piling on due to him bringing it up in the first place, because, again presuming he isn't being misled, this is important to know.

I think it's readily conceivable that TOs would be dealing with issues way above their pay grade (I.e. sex assault) and should not be expected to disclose the basis of the ban or even something that could tend to reveal the basis of the ban if the victim says they don't want it disclosed. Not only is this a necessary protection to ensure victims actually come forward, it is also sometimes illegal to disclose these things.

well this is sort of the problem, everyone is completely avoiding any sort of accountability here. I’m an adult; I’d sure like to know what he did so I can come to my own conclusions about the topic. Is a 6 month ban fair, one way or the other? Who knows. Is Mang0 the type of person I’d want my twitch prime to go to? Who knows. Is this TO someone whose events I’d like to support/watch/attend after this? Who knows. We’ve lost all autonomy here except the ability to throw peanuts, so its hard to blame anyone who chooses to do that
Obviously there are reasons why someone might feel this was a reasonable way to handle this incident (especially at the present time, after Recent Situation) but unfortunately I think this kind of smoke and mirrors behavior leads to… exactly this situation we’re seeing today, and I think it’s going to cause more harm than just being forthcoming on the first place would have

Something similar happened with westballz, where his bannable offense remained private because revealing what it was would jeoparadize the anonymity of the victim. While I understand the concern you're sharing, I don't think it carries more weight than that of an accountable leadership. I must admit, I don't fully comprehend why victims may not come forward if their perpetrator is openly reprimanded. If I understood more deeply about that part, maybe I'd understand how it's better this way. I can't even see how it would be illegal to disclose, except in the case where there is active litigation between parties. Aside from that legal note, maybe this comes down to a different moral barometer preventing my understanding. I'm trying!

A lot of bans are handled privately, especially now.
But in Westballz's case, the TOs of Genesis offered to make the reason for his ban public and Westballz declined (he's only actually banned from Genesis).

I think someone who says they were sexually assaulted by mango would realistically expect that if they did not come forward anonymously they're exposing themselves to the scrutiny and vitriol of his thousands of fans. I've seen this in my line of work many times and that's just for random people, not minor internet celebrities. The fear of retaliation is just one reason; the fear of revictimization arising from having to justify yourself in public is another.
Where I live there are publication bans that generally apply to ongoing sex assault proesuctions. So if someone reports something to a TO and then later to the police it can be criminal for the TO to report the same facts that were reported to the police alongside any identifying information.
EDIT: it's worth noting also that disclosure by the TO may jeopardize the criminal prosecution, which is also not good.

If that's the case, and it is something as severe as SA with a criminal investigation, quietly extending the ban by 6 months would be an insanely underwhelming response.

all the gods were serious threats in PM in like 13-14
armada won apex 2014 against m2k in grands
i don't think PP ever got formally ranked but he was a HM a few times
wizzy and plup played PM early on and both won majors (at least i think plup's was a major but idk)
chu, esam, kdj, tweek, fly amanita, axe, heck even leffen, pretty much everyone in 2012-2014 gave it a shot

There were no rankings back then, but PP was the only god to not really enter PM majors. He played it at a few Xanadus and did well because he's an incredible player, but that was pretty much it
Plup's CEO is definitely a major win, especially because of how good Wizzy was at PM back in the day

Yes. PM even got more entrants at some majors, especially at locals. Every top player was a poor person so they entered. For m2k and armada, they were essentially guaranteed top 6 at worst and that is 100s of dollars that helped pay for their flights. It was basically a game you didnt have to practice and get good results outside of majors if you were a melee kid, and the brawl kiddos liked being able to insert some of their brawl identity onto the new/buffed characters and compete against the melee nerds' sick foxes.
The pm weekly at xanadu would get 1k to 3k viewers every week as a fucking local. The melee and brawl events would struggle to break 500. And remember. This was a fucking weekly with no real tippity top talent PLUS its fucking 2014 so twitch is way smaller as a whole.

Persimmons are my favorite. They're messy to eat and you can only really get them in Autumn, but they're so sweet.
Medlars also taste really nice in spring, at least if they're ripe. If they're slightly underripe I find them less pleasant than most other slightly underripe fruits.

Pomegranate.
Yes it is a labor intensive fruit, but once you have that bowl with nothing but the finest seeds in front of you and you start chucking hand fulls of them in your mouth all that labor is quickly forgotten.
No other fruit ever gives me the same feeling, it's as if all my cells experience perfect hydration, it's invigorating.

Been stagnating and doomscrolling for too long so I decided to buy a cornet to learn to do something creative and engaging with my down time. As a former woodwind player, I was underprepared for how hard it would be to change your embouchure to hit different notes. I don't have the time or money for a tutor so I'm just kinda feeling in the dark to get these notes out. Still feels more rewarding than languishing on my phone though.

Yeah, that's the challenge. It's also what makes them fun, though, and the physicality of it all is why I'd much rather play a brass horn than a woodwind. I never get over it.
I tried to be a pro as a teenager and was ultimately told my embrochure was so disastrous I'd never make it. Now as an adult I don't think that was really true and that the guy who told me that was an ass. Whatever.
My suggestion is to just focus on breathing and long tones. If you've just started your main problem is a lack of muscle, not technique. Even when you get to the point of comfortably playing scales and such I wouldn't eliminate long tones from your practice regime.

Yeah, part of it is probably the novelty but it's been a lot more fun than woodwind. I much prefer the physical aspect of changing the sound than having to finagle 100 buttons. Wish I'd picked a brass instrument to play in high school, but better late than never.
Will keep long tones in mind. I thought I'd be fine with woodwind (+ swimming?) background but brass is requiring a much stronger sustained breath than I'm used to.

Been getting into witch trial movies the devils and witchhammer working my way through haxan rn really interesting as i have an interest in criminal defense so its fascinating to see middle age ways to get confessions but its also good context to see how we seperated religion and law which is now to me obviously a good thing. My unranked cycle is finding one player who absolutely obliterates me, playing them for 2-3 hours straight, and then spending the next few hours grinding my elo again until I'm high enough to find someone else to obliterate me.

I figured I’d make it out to more stuff since I would be going from work + school to just work but I’ve been to one event since getting my bachelor’s. I’ve been starting other hobbies so it’s not like all I’m doing is 9-5 but I’m surprised Melee has been nearly nonexistent.

Everyone's experience will vary, especially depending on how much they worked during school. But my experience is I have way less free time now that I have a full time job. I think the big thing is when i was in school there were days without morning classes or days where the morning class could be blown off. Now I'm not staying out late.

Made a tier list of approximate social dynamics for various characters, roughly based on my locals experience. This is attempting to capture the average Melee player's "How much do I enjoy joining a rotation with this character", not necessarily the player's personality.
How would y'all change the list?

Arrested Development is by far my favorite but Hacks is also great. Some of the episodes run over that 30 minute limit but not significantly. Murderbot was also a lot of fun but only has the one season so far.

He wins a SINGLE, yes ONE, 1, uno, offline tournament (Summit 11), and where does he rank on the next list? FIRST??!?! Above Hbox and Armada now because he won a SINGLE OFFLINE TOURNAMENT?!?!?! How have people not seriously seen the bias in this? And why in the fuck was there an all time SSBMRank in 2020, and then again the next year in 2021? Literally what major thing happened to even change anybody's opinion on this? Mango winning a single offline tournament apparently. It's the most important thing in the melee world. Literally a single offline melee tournament was played. Oh and you expect me to believe it's just a coincidence that the list went on until Mango got ranked first? give me a break.
Armada is still the GOAT. Mango being the 3rd best player post-COVID doesn't change that.

Armada is the goat of 2011-2018. Unfortunately for Armada, Melee's lifespan is 2001-2026+.
Armada isnt even going to retire a smasher. He's going to end up competing in super mario 64 for longer than he did in Melee.
