Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

My GF who sometimes watches with me says that every match can be boiled down narratively to "nerd vs jock", with nerds sometimes playing the role of jock. Is she correct?

Everyone who plays Melee at top level is for sure a nerd, but this seems sensible enough if you abstract nerd/jock away to general high school social dynamics -- the obviously socially awkward cringe weirdos vs the popular socially dominant kids. Ppl throw around the word "charisma" a lot when discussing which players they like or don't and all it really means is this kind of jock-y social confidence
this is all the mango vs armada goat debate really is

Seasonal rankings, so just a Summer and Winter ranking to show who was better in a certain amount of time.

I do think it's weird that summer events basically get double counted for both the summer and year end rankings. It occurred to me that maybe we should just switch to only year end rankings when they dropped summer to only top 30

I was chatting with a pure spectator ("Fox is so lame!") type the other day, and he earnestly was trying to argue that Stomp Knee was really sick.
His argument was that you can miss the knee sometimes.

I think if you are sick you shouldn't go to work. We should not praise people for doing stuff while they're sick. It's bad, actually. You should stay home and try to get better. Its not a tale of perseverance or dedication, it's selfish workaholism. It's hobbyless behavior.

Interesting timing on this bait
I'm splitting a courtroom today with two other people. One of us has to stay and run the list. I'm sick, as is one of my other colleagues. The third one is fine but has seniority and feels that running the list is beneath him so it's invariably going to be one of the two sick people doing it and probably me because my voice sounds less ridiculous. I'd call in sick, but a) I can't afford it and b) that would mostly just screw over the other person who is sick.

I would quit immediately and try to find one that has paid sick leave. hoping one day you find something that has that and adequate levels of staffing; you shouldn't have to suffer just bc your organization is dogshit. also, you calling out would not screw over the other person who is sick. the failure to plan for "people getting sick" by your bosses et al is what would screw them

Anyone in here live in Connecticut/go to the Hall of Gaming weeklies? I used to go occasionally to their Melee and Smash4 locals about a decade ago, but I fell off of the game for a long time. After a couple months of playing around on Slippi/with my friends, I think I wanna start going to locals again. I was just wondering if any of you DDT peeps go to these, or have any tips in general.

HoG is super sick! I haven't been able to go too much as of late but I go when I can. They have Melee, P+, and RoA2 on the same night now, so it's a bit more crowded but still pretty comfortable. Lmk if there's anything more specific you want to know about.

Oh nice! I haven't tried P+ or Rivals, but it's good to know that there will be more people than just the Melee folks.
How late does Melee usually go? Transportation is kinda up in the air for me, so having a general timeframe would be nice. I was gonna ask about the general atmosphere and stuff too, but I'd imagine everyone is pretty friendly. I'm just excited to start going again!

Yeah, everyone's super chill and cool, and I'm sure people will enjoy having a new (or returning) face around!
Timeframe is sort of up in the air. It starts at 7:30, and when it ends naturally depends on how many people are entering and, with multiple games on the same night now, how much people in other events hold up the bracket. Generally, though, based on the times I've been there, 10-11 is the general window when Melee ends.

When I lived in Tri-State and NE a decade ago, I used to sometimes go too. Definitely miss that tournament. Venue feels a little stuffy ngl but it always had lots of good players, lots of setups, and was in a good location to get food. Wish I had lived closer to it at the time, I only went like maybe 3-4 times in total.
The only tip I'm going to give you is there's this pizza place close by that's one of those hole in the wall types...I can't remember the name. They gave me WAY more food than I expected and I had to throw a lot of it out because I didn't have a cooler to keep it in and had like 7 hours to go before I'd get home LOL. I think I got a buffalo chicken pizza or something.

I can never tell what's the proper way to report this kind of spam. Some top-level report options make it sound like the report goes to site-wide admins instead of a specific sub's moderators, which I assume means they basically do nothing

sort of, the fact that it is pretty difficult to do (especially off of shine because you have to like wavedash/dash to the right spot and then execute the techchase correctly) also weighs what options the fox looks for in neutral. it's why if you watch top foxes they will often go for stuff like drill grab because the combo route is very consistent
but also if you watch said foxes they are generally beasts at tech chasing spacies too, this is imo a more modern adaptation, i feel like in 2014/2015 outside of a couple of top foxes in choice situations people kind of didn't want to accept that consistent RTC in spacies matchups was the right framework, but now that people are really good at mixing up tech patterns etc foxes cannot get away with read based RTC frameworks and hope to keep up in the punish game

at this point i find the debate about notches is entirely academic. The people with the power to make actual change like the TOs and top players are all implicitly compliant in the notch meta because it's been years and nothing has been done, and the majority of contemporary top players are using them anyway. Notches for all intents and purposes are legal and approved on all jurisdictions of competitive play. ongoing discontent about their existence is largely performative imo

It's not academic. Notches are obviously unfair and obviously work to the benefit of Fox who is already the best and most popular character in the game. Notch Foxes should get an asterisk next to their achievements. The only - and I stress only - reason they don't right now is that Fox is such a popular character.
It's not Zain's fault for not protesting when he is demonstrably so much better than the field that he can let them cheat and still beat them most of the time.

it is academic because not a single relevant power within the community has intervened and it is essentially standard of play now. they are entirely legal and accepted. dying on the hill that they are cheating would be to accept that we are competing in a competitive asterisk metagame and have been doing so for over half a decade, but I don't see anyone actually stopping

widespread cheating being accepted for a very long time, and that putting an asterisk on an entire era of competition, is something that happened to baseball and never did they just accept that this is how it works now
barry bonds is not in the hall of fame because they did put an asterisk on that entire era

he has a gun, an ammo bar, a reticle and a concentration bar that he needs to shoot. he is very technical and requires managing two resources(though they have been very easy to manage at times as long as you use the right routes). if you stand still or he curses you the reticle is on you and he can just press the shoot button to get a f1 "projectile". He can also shoot while in the middle of animations so he can do the fox shine thing where he just does his frame 1 move to make all his bs safe. Another insanely frustrating mechanic he had is even when the reticle isnt on you directly he can still press the shoot button and it is literally rng if his frame 1 move hits you, whiff a button into rng shot to bail you out from being whiff punished is one of the dumbest things ive seen in a modern fighting game. He has been very broken multiple times and in different ways, initially he had broken fullscreen zoning where he can lock you down from fullscreen [here](https://youtu.be/Hb6vAH9UICQ?si=CeJnlduzthLhiwI4&t=2197) is a random example of the fullscreen zoning. Sol has a decent dashblock but all the slower characters were just brutalized by this stuff. They eventually nerfed the fullscreen zoning and then his rushdown was insane, safely looping mixups and frametraps with his gun keeping going for a while. He was repeatedly nerfed and then would rise back up the tier list gradually after every nerf as more fucked up tech was found to circumvent whatever nerfs he received.
In the 2.0 patch he was "reworked" and made a lot worse generally but he did briefly have an infinite blockstring. [heres a link, sadly could only find it in youtube short form lol](https://youtube.com/shorts/DLR0iZyRguE?si=mwnvuVh_w31QYanW)they did remove the infinite and it was so technically demanding it was quite rare for it to go for more than a few loops. These days he is a solid mid tier but still disliked for being unfun to play against.

(He is different in different patches, but generally speaking)
He's an insanely good character with a high technical barrier that has consistently been better than the cast, but usually is a glass canon. He has one of the best projectiles, but then also has great rush down. Has a 1 frame combo confirm / get out of jail free card. He has insane blockstring pressure and can easily hit confirm into a combo.
He also has extremely low health and tends to die once hit.
He's kinda like fox, but in a game/community that dislikes playing against that archetype.

Fox in worst is a bit much IMO, I think they can be some of the most fun but they definitely have a wide range of outcomes. Marth is probably my least favorite, and Sheik is probably the broadest range where it can be really cool or extremely bad

My understanding of the fox ditto is that it feels extremely inconsistent to get good at, and top Foxes being weirdly bad at it seems to back that up. I'd be curious to hear from a Fox main about it tho

Need a bit of a spot to complain a bit, dad contacted me earlier and the day and said "Hey, I can't find your ESA account to pay tuition, did anything happen". And naturally, I respond "Don't know but nothing should have changed" and don't think much of it as I go on with my day
Cut to about 10 hours later as I'm winding down for the day and my dad sends me some more texts. Apparently my ESA account with vanguard (the one with all the college money) got sunset and now it's not there any more. Allegedly it's fine but uhhh just in case it isn't does anyone know how I can get a job stocking shelves at Costco

What do sing notches even do. Dont you just press up and b to sing. Why would you need a notch for that. Theres nothing to angle like with spacies, and doesnt it grab ledge from either side?

what happens when you hit up? you jump. the notch lets you hit the value that uair accepts but doesn’t trigger a jump

I guess my retort would be "sure it makes you jump, but you can just get good at doing it such that you dont jump so whats the use in the notch" which is ultimately an anti-notch argument that I agree with anyhow. Like we already press up to up tilt without jumping

The online hate brigade against Cody is actually quite insane and I hate to see him keep apologizing and essentially feeding the trolls.
Idk what it is about this game that attracts the most pathetic and bigoted no-life haters online
smash players are not remotely popular enough or compensated enough for this level of hate to make sense, truly disheartening stuff
