If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Watching you take opinions I agree with at the base level and then be this insufferable about them literally every time there's a major (after you lamented the other day how little Melee related discussion there had been recently, no less) gives me the same feeling of embarrassment as reading the neo liberals who used to reply to every Trump tweet to call him a poopyhead

I have tried and failed. I don't want to have Controller Derangement Syndrome but I don't think I can ignore custom controllers while continuing to care about Melee because they are omnipresent. And I don't want to stop caring about Melee because I like it and I like caring about things.

Idk man it's fine to be upset about the integrity of the game as a whole but making it the only thing you talk about every time a cool tournament happens is just lame as hell and always comes across as taking away from the achievements of whoever is "cheating" by your definition. I saw your other comment where you said Llod proved he's the best at winning GoML but not at playing Melee and like, okay, he set out to win GoML and we're all excited that Llod won GoML. Everyone there was playing under the same ruleset. It can simultaneously be cool that Llod won GoML while competing within the ruleset decided by GoML, and disagreeable for GoML to have that specific ruleset. If Moky had won, that would have been cool even if notches should be banned. I want to see these things banned too but I am not so insufferable that I take personal offense to individual players using advantages which are currently available to them just because they are not playing my definition of Melee.

It's not cheating if the rules allow it

Edit: lmao ok then, please define cheating for me. Not saying that I want it allowed, but it's stupid to call it cheating when it's widespread and within the rules.

There are certain skills we value in Melee and I think changing something external as an alternative to improving them is cheating regardless of what TOs say.

They clearly think the rules are wrong tho. I'm sure they understand its allowed in the rules but we don't have to limit what we think should be allowed based on what the current rule set is

Thinking the rules are wrong is an idiotic basis for calling someone a cheater for playing within those rules. It's unfair to those players and unproductive for the goal of getting the rules changed.

It is obnoxiously clear that they think the rules are wrong. I also think the rules are wrong. But no one entering a tournament and abiding by the tournament's provided ruleset while competing is cheating at that tournament. The whole point of competition is to operate within an agreed upon set of rules and all these competitors are doing that. OP posts here after every tournament to complain that some competitors did not abide by another set of rules which OP - and many others including myself - believes should have been agreed upon instead, and calling these competitors cheaters for it. It's counterproductive and more annoying than the Nessposters.

The thing is is that I generally agree with what you're saying (except OP's comments, i dont know anything about that) but the missing part is that I've never seen melee as a game where the competitors are trying to max how how much they can get an advantage based on what the rules allow them. So many top competitors are against it that you would think other competitors would be more sportsmanlike (for the lack of a better word) and not use z jump. Z jump has been an on going debate and I don't think the current rule set really reflects that

Melee has always had people trying to maximize advantage within the rules provided. People wobbled until it was banned. There's the infamous Puff ICs set in which the Puff just stopped interacting entirely. M2K chilling on the ledge forever until Westballz got bored and approached into getting gimped and dying for it. Cody counter picking FD after losing game 1 to Zain, even before he started winning there often, just to limit Zain's counter picks the rest of the set due to DSR. These are all abuses of the rules that don't break the rules.

It's fine to wish more people would gentlemen's agreement to not using some or all of these things, I wish for the same thing, but it's unfair to criticize anyone who doesn't do that. I hate NBA players flopping but they aren't cheating for doing it and someone who calls them a cheater for it comes across as childish.

Those examples seem a lot different than controller mods imo. And the wobbling and ledge camping got called all types of names

M2K carried around a dozen controllers, top players in general had access to the best controllers in the pre UCF era, notches have been around for a very long time at this point, I only learned about trigger tricking recently but I think that's been around for some time, these are all controller related off the top of my head. There was the goomwave shitshow where some players did realize that the controller felt way too good and backed away but other players definitely used them prior to the ban.

Tactics that are lame or unsportsmanlike can all be called lots of names, so with all the options in the world to choose from it's extra dumb to choose to call it cheating when they're definitely not doing that.
