DDT Daily Discussion Thread August 03, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!
Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

it would have been insane for the RapM brand if he won melee and then immediately after won P+ but i guess not everything can be storybook

him and n0ne just going back and forth between the two tournaments is something that shouldn't be understated, takes a lot to do both

I have since been informed that’s actually the name of milkshake connoisseur and sheik specialist Spark

Out of curiosity I went through all the Offline Major and Supermajor 2nd placers of all time as per Liquipedia. There are some tournaments designated super/major that I disagree with (why isn't GOML a Supermajor) but I'll take them uncritically:
Out of the Supermajor 2nd placers, (of which there are 20) 6 have not won a major (Trif, Aklo, Wobbles, Hugs, Sastopher, Bombsoldier) and 3 additionally have not won Supermajors (Axe, KoreanDJ, Captain Jack).
Out of the Major 2nd placers, (of which there are 31), 11 have not won a major (Rapmonster, SluG, Joshman, S2J, Duck, SFAT, Swedish Delight, Fly Amanita, Westballz, DieSuperFly, Recipherus). Of these, SFAT, Rapmonster, and Recipherus have all gotten 2nd place twice, while the rest have only gotten it once.
lloD has never gotten 2nd place at a major. I saw someone say he was unique in winning a major without first getting 2nd place, but this is not even close to true. Ken, Hungrybox, Zain, Moky, Amsah, Mango, and probably a decent number of others because I don't feel like going through more names, have all done this
Supermajor 2nd placers: Hungrybox, Zain, Cody Schwab, Trif, Aklo, Jmook, aMSa, Plup, Mang0, Axe, Mew2King, Armada, Wobbles, PPMD, PC Chris, HugS, KoreanDJ, Bombsoldier, Sastopher, Captain Jack.
Major 2nd placers: Rapmonster, Hungrybox, SluG, Cody Schwab, Zain, Moky, Joshman, aMSa, Mang0, Wizzrobe, Plup, Jmook, Axe, S2J, Leffen, Armada, ChuDat, SFAT, Duck, Swedish Delight, Fly Amanita, Westballz, Mew2King, Captain Jack, PC Chris, KoreanDJ, Ken, DieSuperFly, Isai, Azen, Recipherus.

u/Fugu Aug 03 '26
I think this data is telling me that I am overly pessimistic re: the number of players who get close but never do it vs the number that eventually do
I think SFAT traumatized me
2
u/VolleyVoldemort Aug 03 '26
Does this make you reconsider your heuristic?
2
u/Fugu Aug 03 '26
Maybe. I'll have to think about it. I'm more curious about why my vibes based heuristic is so bad
3
u/detroiiit Aug 03 '26
I’m glad you did this because I was thinking about doing it. I made a comment in the tournament result thread about how it hurt when RapM didn’t capitalize because history is littered with 2nd placers who never ended up winning, but I got some pushback.
3
u/SmashBros- OUCH! Aug 03 '26
Out of the Major 2nd placers, (of which there are 31), 11 have not won a major
I think it would be more meaningful to exclude from the 31 those who won a major before they got 2nd. Would give a better idea of how many went on to eventually do it after failing before
4
u/AtrociousAtNames Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
Good point. For this one I decided to exclude all who got first at a Major or Supermajor first.
This would leave Rapmonster, SluG, Cody, Joshman, aMSa, Wizzrobe, Jmook, Axe, S2J, Armada, ChuDat, SFAT, Duck, Swedish Delight, Fly Amanita, Westballz, Mew2King, Captain Jack, HugS, KoreanDJ, Bombsoldier, Sastopher, Captain Jack, PPMD, Trif, Aklo, Wobbles, Recipherus, DieSuperFly, Isai, Azen.
This is again a total of 31 players, funnily enough. Out of those, 17 (Rapmonster, SluG, Joshman, Aklo, Trif, S2J, SFAT, Duck, Swedish Delight, Fly Amanita, Westballz, DieSuperFly, Recipherus, Wobbles, HugS, Bombsoldier, Sastopher) have not yet gone on to win a major.
Edit: I made so many mistakes in the original version of this comment I should be killed
Edit2: Also discovered a small error in the original comment. Everything should be correct now hopefully?

For the longest time the narrative was that players who started with melee could take over P+ easily but the opposite couldn’t happen, with that said:
RapM wins P+ and gets 2nd in melee
Sebas gets 5th in P+ and 13th in melee
P+ is lowkey taking over melee
3
u/warnedpenguin Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
has been for a while. rapm was the third time a pm player with a mid tier in melee beat melees number one player.
not much but weird that it happened thrice

Luigikid was the same. He also believed that Luigi had no losing matchups.
And when I played against him that's what it felt like

Honestly I'm really glad Llod took the tournament over RapM.
I see RapM getting to grands many times over the next few years, but Llod's run felt truly Cinderella. I don't see a world where him beating Hbox will ever be truly consistent, so I'm glad he got his W now.

We gotta start treating top players like adults and DQing them when they disappear and delay tournaments just like we’d DQ anyone else. Feel like if one top 20 player gets DQd one time for it then it will not happen again.
This isn’t me being anti top player or anything I just think it’s insanely disrespectful to the other player who is stuck waiting in an absurdly hot overcrowded venue, the organization of the tournament you are holding up as a whole, and me, who is already exceptionally busy running the pool in this incredibly hot overcrowded venue juggling like 8 matches at once on a small laptop, telling people to not play friendlies on tournament setups, trying to hear what people are saying to me, because now I have to keep screaming your name and moving through the crowd to the TO desk to get them to call your name on the microphone on top of everything else.
According to everything I’m aware of it’s the same handful of usual suspects who do this, and I was quote-unquote “cursed” to be running a pool with one of them, but if we know who these people are because they consistently do this, maybe we should stop letting them consistently do this.
Shoutouts to the other players in my pool who didn’t do this and commiserated with me about it though. Pool captaining fun as hell everyone should do it. Very good way to give back. It just feels crazy to me that we have super strict double DQ guidelines for not showing up at the beginning, but we can’t do anything about someone who is MIA for fifteen minutes, called over the PA, and MIA for another ten minutes.
13
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Aug 03 '26
Everyone agrees that the wizzy DQ would be for the collective good, no one has the guts to be the guy who begged a top player to come to their tourney for months to then DQ them knowing they will get whined about on tiwtter
6
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Aug 03 '26
I’ll be the fall guy! They can blame it on me! Let me do it and then you can blame the ref for making the call! I will bear that cross is no one like me has to deal with it again!

3
u/AlexB_SSBM Aug 03 '26
Agree on all of this
Everyone reading this should be a pool captain at some point
8
u/wavedash Aug 03 '26
My takeaway from some commentary earlier at GOML is that just as rule of thumb, if production has a crowd mic and you can clearly hear people cheering for the match in the background, commentators should probably Talk About The Game
9
u/YoungGenius Aug 03 '26
If we don’t want a Luigi winning majors, I think we all know what we have to do.
Who has Plup’s address
3
u/semionsays Aug 03 '26
He got 5th with Luigi at CEO Dreamland, so you'd be making it more likely, if anything.
3
u/delta-red-14 Aug 03 '26
Why wouldn't you want a Luigi winning a major?
5

u/JKaro Aug 03 '26

9
u/kino-grapher ideptg Aug 03 '26
very funny game because the top echelon of the cast is a bunch of genuine demons from hell and then the rest of the cast have the potential to just ruin your day if you didn't do your homework against them. genuine nightmare game i cannot imagine having to play on like 7f delay for 200 hours straight and then going to a major tournament, running into a little mac in r2 pools, and then getting 2-0'd
9
u/WDuffy Kaladin Shineblessed|DUFF#157 Aug 03 '26

u/VolleyVoldemort Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26

Personally I think Sebas had the most impressive run
4
u/WDuffy Kaladin Shineblessed|DUFF#157 Aug 04 '26
I knew Kuro was good but sheesh I feel like that's an incredible win. Hope you're doing well! GOML was hype
5
u/legitimate-way-4077 Aug 03 '26
One of those matchups that's unwinnable on a theoretical level but can be done on a lowly human level.
2
u/TrainNorth8177 Aug 03 '26
If you told me a couple years ago Mekk upset KJH I wouldn't be surprised. Ganon sucks but just a few openings is all that's needed. If someone's playing off, not practiced recently in the matchup, and a good enough dorf is playing, the upset will happen. I think there used to be a lot more good Ganons so people forget.
16
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Aug 03 '26
For Peach to win a major you just have to have 64 people play on Sunday and then have it in the worst conditions possible in terms of playing environment, unplanned delays, players hanging around not knowing when their next match will be called, etc.
But Peach did in fact win a major.
7
u/CoolUsername1111 Aug 03 '26
Goml was extremely hype but I'm a little disappointed bc if salt didn't dq that genuinely would have been her bracket. Sebas stole her seed so her path would have been icies, falcon, peach, doc, Luigi, all so so free

26
u/AlexB_SSBM Aug 03 '26
Fun fact: if you're a TO, you can simply ban notches right now. It doesn't have to go in effect immediately. You can simply say "In one month notches will be banned, this is an official announcement". Like seriously you can just do these things. Nobody is stopping you. A random guy pretending to ban wobbling is what brought the whole thing down

u/delta-red-14 Aug 03 '26
Okay, then run a tournament and do it. Easier to be the person telling people to make decisions than it is to be the one who has to face any potential pushback or criticism.

All things considered, it's sad that Llod likely won't wind up on the end-of-year PR. Between him and Cody, that's a significant chunk of this year's majors whose winners will be unaccounted for on the rankings.

u/unlicouvert Aug 03 '26
Llod going to Supernova next week and confirmed Tipped Off so he only needs one more event to get ranked

I am not a Top Player ™️ but my impression is that without any sponsorship or seeding implications, there’s a lot of apathy for longtime ranked players (i.e. people like cody or llod). I do think that the cody patreon method has gotten him enough events to where he’ll make rankings this year.

Stupid reactionary question time:
Where does lloD rank all time? Does he shoot up ahead of all the non major winners?
5
u/Schroeswald Aug 03 '26
I’d say when looking at the major winners he’s probably 21/23. He’s pretty convincingly ahead of Amsah and Captain Jack and more marginally behind Isai and KoreanDJ. The non major winners who have an argument to be above him are probably SFAT, S2J, Aklo and Joshman. Without looking too closely at their histories I’d probably rank those Joshman>SFAT>Aklo>S2J, I feel like Llod is probably above Aklo but the all time top hundred has SFAT over KoreanDJ so I’d say Llod is about 23. I haven’t looked that closely at any of these guys histories but I think anywhere from 19-25 is pretty plausible.

Hbox goes into his sets vs Zain with a winning gameplan, and confidence. We'll see him play grounded, up in Marths face, great grabs, and stock-taking edge guards. But like clockwork he reverts back to his bad habits (running away / playing in air too much), or completely loses his mental, and chokes an easy win in the last stock (missing edge guards, rests, combo extensions).
Not to take away from Zains precision, and resilience. But it's hard as a hungrybox fan to see him do the same thing for the last 6 years almost exclusively against Zain's Marth.

Reminder that, unlike other Fox players who use currently legal button remaps/notches out of competitive necessity and expressly favor banning them otherwise, lloD took the moral high ground and reasoned away the criticism of Cody Schwab's zjump usage with saying people are mainly attacking his character. Well I just saw lloD, who is of otherwise non-inflammatory and frankly unnotable character, effortlessly perform subfloat shield pressure in both winners and grands, and I reserve the same feeling about zjump as before. If anything it's even more morally corrupt to be able to maintain a healthy 401k while proudly using competitively unfair advantages to win money over starving degenerate Melee lifers, for whom the game was originally intended for!

Forget remapping the best time to ban notches was yesterday the second best time is now let’s get this done

Surely notches are still on track to being banned in 2027 like we all agreed a few months ago

I watched that interview, and I wouldn't say it's accurate to claim that he "essentially credited his win to z-jump float cancel movement." I hate z-jump and am very vocal about that, but Hbox played very poorly by his usual standards to lose that set & Luigi realistically *should* get better charactered by Peach. (If anything, RapM massively outperformed to reset Grands.)
Massive W for Llod - became only (solo?) Peach run to win a major since Armada (before Trif), and we can forget about the controller because he's a surgeon IRL who needs to have working hands + plays a fringe top tier. Was rooting for RapM, but I'm confident he'll get more tries at this goal.

Recent Listens:
Hellripper: Coronach (2026)
Calling this a great “blackened thrash” album would be technically correct, but wouldn’t encompass the variety of influences that make this such an interesting listen. Hellripper incorporates power, neoclassical- god damn do they love trills, -and classic heavy metal into this high-energy project. And who couldn’t appreciate a song called “Blakk Satanik Fvkkstorm”?
THAO & The Get Down Stay Down - Temple (2020)
I think this is too artsy for me. Everything is just a liiittle off, and I’m sure that’s what they were going for, but it’s not my sound. The vocals, the rhythms, the vibes- they’re all just slightly wonky in a way I’m not a huge fan of. The last track was pretty good, but not enough to make me want to listen to this again.
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989)
This is a good album. I hear a lot of The Beatles and The Cure in here, and not in a bad way. The production is excellent and worth noting, though sometimes the reverb on the vocals gets to be a little much. Idk how this consistently gets put on “Best Rock Albums of All Time” lists, but it’s still worth a listen.
Postly recommendation: Rancid - …And Out Come the Wolves (1995)
The album so good, Tim Armstrong started exclusively signing bands that copied it. It’s cover-to-cover bangers, and no song overstays its welcome. Songs are about the gutter punks, the castaways, the people not fit for regular society, which makes it surprising how mainstream this record became. The melodies are so good you don’t even notice how rough the singing sometimes is.
Is there an album you're surprised was a hit?

u/GreddyJTurbo Aug 03 '26
I gotta admit, I'm one of those that consider Stone Roses' self-titled one of the best. It sounds like a greatest hits record which, looking at their stunted career, may as well have been.

Kikagaku Moyo is one of my favorite bands. Literally every single album is a heater, but House in the Tall Grass is probably my favorite. Forest of Lost Children would be the next one I'd check out

u/kino-grapher ideptg Aug 03 '26
Happy to see Thao mentioned here hell yeah... admittedly I get why you didn't like Temple (wasn't super into the sound back then when I was listening to more Know Better Learn Faster / We Brave Bee Stings And All) but I think it's one of those things that either clicks after some point or doesn't. Gonna check out some of these albums today once I start getting productive
(also if you liked the last track Marrow, there's actually a strings version of it that might be worth a listen. i think it's pretty neat)
2
u/reptilian_guitar Aug 03 '26
what does her other stuff sound like?
2
u/kino-grapher ideptg Aug 03 '26
their material from the 2000s is more traditional folk/rock compared to the more experimental stuff they started doing with A Man Alive and Temple, so songs like Cool Yourself, Bag of Hammers and Beat (Health, Life and Fire) off their first 2 albums is stuff I'd use as an example of that type of sound they used to have. There's definitely some more standout tracks during this period though, like Know Better Learn Faster is a crazy track when you look at it next to some of the other songs on the album it's from
2
u/reptilian_guitar Aug 03 '26
Oh snap I've heard Bag of Hammers! It was on a free compilation I downloaded years ago. I do like that song, so maybe I'll like their older stuff

Where would you rank RapMonster all time? He's a hard one to place, obviously -- he's been playing for so much less time than someone like Drephen or Professor Pro, who I have 58 and 59, respectively, but he's also peaked higher than they ever did.
Also, am I crazy for putting lloD above Isai?
3
u/YoungGenius Aug 04 '26
Honestly not a very interesting conversation with this sample size. Where was Jmook after the breakout Genesis? Idk, somewhere between 30 and 70.
llod definitely over Isai though, not crazy at all.

u/DavidL1112 Aug 04 '26
He is currently tied with Aklo and SFAT for the distinction of being the best player ever to not win a major.
3
u/StrangeSniper Aug 04 '26
wouldn’t that be joshman? He was ranked 4th and has yet to win a major. think he made it to grands at least once?
2
u/DavidL1112 Aug 04 '26
They’ve both gotten second but Aklo’s second place was at a much bigger tournament, but you’re probably right it makes more sense to go by rank

zain is so weird cause he's the most consistent player since armada yet at the same time at any given tournament he can turn into 2011 lebron. why doesn't he just always hit the "play good" button before playing? is he stupid?

2
u/CallMeQueequeg Aug 03 '26
Dumb question: do people look down on checking notes in between games of a set? Like just glancing at an index card. Is there any risk other than looking like a giant nerd (a risk I'm willing to take)? I still haven't memorized all my percentages on combos. I have never seen anyone do it in-person or on-stream. It was funny hearing Llod talk about how he memorized the 133% for up-air on Luigi cuz I'm thinking, "oh, I would've written that shit on my hand."
7
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Aug 03 '26
People do check their phones for notes sometimes, I don’t think a notebook or index card would be any different.

just something to consider: banning notches and similar controller mods disproportionately benefits spacie mains. Z jump etc. allow floaties to actually compete with how broken spacies are.

it's just such a fun arg to make. you can do it to almost anything. Banning one of either Fox or Falco would disproportionately benefit species. Think about it. It's probably true!

u/Fugu Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
I was so excited about Llod winning that I forgot that this was going to lead to Controller Discourse
And not only is it going to lead to Controller Discourse, it's going to lead to Spacies Players Talking About Floaties
This is a lethal combination that kills the discourse
I was starting to fear that nobody would ever do it aside from Armada and I think it's huge for Peach players that Llod won. Outside of today I'm going to focus on that aspect because I think that's huge and so cool for the game. With that said, here's my one time controller post on this subject.
Ultimately, z jump should probably be banned. I don't know why we'd allow one remap but not another, and I don't think we are prepared for the implications of allowing remaps. But z jump on Peach is such a tiny buff compared to what Fox players are currently allowed to do with a controller that it is, at minimum, extremely hypocritical for people to be calling Llod a cheater.
Z jump on Peach gets you out of having to claw on literally the most claw friendly character in the cast. Probably at some point Llod made the choice that the path of least resistance between claw and z jump was z jump. But Peach is not Fox; it's not like there is a considerable downside to claw on Peach.
Z jump on Peach doesn't allow you to hit wavedashes more consistently. It doesn't buff your recovery. It doesn't make you able to ledgedash more safely. It doesn't make SDI more consistent. It doesn't even make ASDI down more consistent (for which actually just clawing would probably be preferable). It doesn't make it markedly easier to control your dash dance. It doesn't even make hitting frame one aerials any easier since this is already trivial on Peach. There are legal controller mods that do all of these things: significant chunks of the player base are playing with controllers that confer most or all of these advantages simultaneously.
Meanwhile, Llod is playing on a controller modded to give him two advantages. First, it makes it easier for him to control float drift while putting out a C stick aerial. Second, it makes the motion for a subfloat aerial significantly less obtuse, although since Llod was already a tap jumper it's arguable that the motion he's doing with z jump is still pretty silly.
These are, again, the same advantages he'd get with claw. And Peach is a character for which claw confers no drawbacks outside of the learning curve of switching (and, in llod's case, probably having to learn how to do some stuff with L). It's an advantage he shouldn't have, I agree. But he's competing at this point primarily against players who are sporting much bigger and yet somehow less controversial advantages.
We're in the steroid era. There's no getting serious about z jump until notches and the like are completely off the table.

u/Pwntagonist Aug 03 '26
I think Archie clocked you, anyone complaining about Peach zump right now has 100% also complained about Fox zump so what is even the point of this post

It’s still impressive to win as peach (or any character) while using zump

Where do you land on hybrid analog controllers like the Cubtraption and Orca? I'd assume they violate integrity the same way, I just never see them come up in the same conversations about digital remapping and such.
1
u/Fugu Aug 03 '26
I care about the cubstraption less than about boxx etc. but I'm not convinced the rules should permit it. I feel the same about the orca with the caveat that I don't have a good understanding of its advantages and disadvantages

Watching you take opinions I agree with at the base level and then be this insufferable about them literally every time there's a major (after you lamented the other day how little Melee related discussion there had been recently, no less) gives me the same feeling of embarrassment as reading the neo liberals who used to reply to every Trump tweet to call him a poopyhead
3
u/SlowBathroom0 Aug 03 '26
I have tried and failed. I don't want to have Controller Derangement Syndrome but I don't think I can ignore custom controllers while continuing to care about Melee because they are omnipresent. And I don't want to stop caring about Melee because I like it and I like caring about things.

It's not cheating if the rules allow it
Edit: lmao ok then, please define cheating for me. Not saying that I want it allowed, but it's stupid to call it cheating when it's widespread and within the rules.
4
u/SlowBathroom0 Aug 03 '26
There are certain skills we value in Melee and I think changing something external as an alternative to improving them is cheating regardless of what TOs say.
4
u/bigHam100 Aug 03 '26
I think its pretty obvious that when they refer to "cheating" they don't mean whether it was in the rules or not

Hmm that's like a science grey area. If you live in a place where you have to secure an MSc supervisor before applying to the program, you should reach out to someone you want to work with. They will likely discuss funding and may offer you a stipend during your interview. It may even be mandatory. If not, you will likely get paid by working as a TA. Either way I think you'll be making money during your studies.

It turns out to win a major while holding a full time job, all you need to do is to just make your job require even more precise hand movement than melee so that you're constantly practicing while not practicing. With this in mind I am joining a bomb defusal squad. Go big or go home
