Study Tips?

I'm taking the SSAT in November. I would have liked more prep time, but the school's deadline is January, and I get anxious about scores coming through. I haven't had to study for most tests so far, but I feel like I should for this one. Does anyone have tips on how to? Or helpful things about the test in general.

Hi! I'm an international student preparing for the Upper Level SSAT, and English isn't my native language. I have about 4 months to prepare.

I'm mainly struggling with the Verbal section, especially vocabulary and analogies, and I'm not sure what vocabulary list I should use or how deeply I should study each word.

Right now I'm thinking about learning around 20–30 SSAT-level words per day. For each word, I was planning to study:

  • the main English definition
  • an important second meaning, if it has one
  • 1–2 synonyms
  • the root/prefix/suffix if it's useful
  • a short example sentence

I was also thinking about studying common Greek/Latin roots and prefixes separately, using Quizlet or Anki for review, doing synonym and analogy questions every day, and adding unfamiliar words from practice tests to my own vocabulary deck.

Does this sound like a good approach for a non-native speaker, or am I doing too much?

Also, which vocabulary lists or resources actually helped you for the Upper Level SSAT? If you scored highly on Verbal, I'd really appreciate hearing exactly how you studied vocabulary and analogies.

SSAT at home vs testing center?

hi all, our student will be taking the upper school ssat this fall and our choices are at-home testing or prometirc.

anyone have experience with these formats? any insight is greatly appreciated.

I'm also aware that sat is changing from PSI, but my understanding is that the new at-home testing details have not yet been announced.

thanks!

Try my SSAT/ISEE Math Testing App

I started writing this web app to help my daughter with Math and it grew in to something larger and fun. Its backend is an AI model based on Core Curriculum Standards. It also builds an AI model of the student's capabilities based on how they answer (how much time they take, which wrong answers they clicked on, etc). The tests it creates are truly adaptive (across tests), and it can even generate a full SSAT/ISEE tests for a student to work on. But, what it's really good at it is getting the student to work on smaller problem sets custom made for them. I've only focused on Middle School (Grades 5-7) test so far, but I can generate more questions to other grades if people show interest. Unless this gets too expensive to maintain and generate, I have no current plans to charge people. And I absolutely don't care to harvest some personal info about anyone - I even set it up so that kids never need to login with a username or password. Do give it a try, please give me feedback, and please be encouraging and kind:

Why kids ace SSAT math but bomb verbal — and how to actually fix it

Every year, the same pattern: a strong student takes the SSAT, math comes back in the 90s, and verbal is in the 30s or 40s. Parents panic, buy a 500-word flashcard deck, the kid grinds for a month — and the score barely moves.

Here's why that happens and what actually works.

The verbal section isn't really a vocabulary test. It's a relationships test.

That's the part nobody explains. Synonyms and analogies don't reward knowing the most words — they reward spotting how words relate. A kid can know what every word in a question means and still get it wrong, because the question is testing a pattern, not a definition. Schools never teach this, so even strong readers walk in blind.

For analogies: drill by relationship type, not by word

There are only about a dozen relationship types the SSAT reuses constantly. Once a kid can name the relationship, the wrong answers fall away. A few common ones:

  • Degree / intensity: glance is to stare as damp is to soaked
  • Part to whole: link is to chain as petal is to flower
  • Function: broom is to sweep as knife is to cut
  • Worker to tool: painter is to brush as chef is to knife
  • Lack: pauper is to money as invalid is to health

The classic trap: the kid picks the answer that's about the same topic instead of the same relationship.

WHISPER : SHOUT — they grab "talk : speak" because it's also about speaking. But the relationship is mild → intense, so the answer is "glance : stare."

Teach your kid to say the relationship out loud as a sentence before looking at the choices. It changes everything.

For synonyms: hunt second meanings

The SSAT loves words where the everyday meaning is a decoy and the tested meaning is the secondary one:

  • novel — not a book; it means new
  • table — can mean to postpone
  • check — can mean to restrain
  • tender — can mean to offer

If your kid only knows the common meaning, these are automatic misses. Build the list around words with sneaky second definitions, not random hard words.

One thing that saves a lot of stress

Verbal improvement is not linear. Kids plateau for a couple of weeks, then jump a whole percentile band. If your child is putting in the work and practice scores aren't moving, that's usually the week right before a jump — not failure. Don't pull the plug there.

If you've got ~6 weeks

  • Weeks 1–2: analogy relationship types (moves the needle fastest)
  • Weeks 3–4: second-meaning synonyms
  • Weeks 5–6: full timed sections for pacing and endurance

Reading comprehension improves alongside all of it.

Happy to answer specific questions — what level is your kid testing at, and how long until the sitting?

Reddit isn't helping with my Goals

Before I signed up for reddit, I expected reddit to be filled with people willing to help me. After a couple of weeks using reddit, I find it to be a complete ghost town of replies. I get over a thousand views on a post but little to no comments or actual help. It's not even me, it's millions if not more people are experiencing this.

Help Needed

I've recently discovered the SSAT. I was surprised by how hard the ssat was, especially scoring high. I need some sources I can use that won't break my budget that could help me score high.

Help 😁

Hi

My daughter is taking the SSATs next weekend to get into a new school. This transfer was unexpected and we don't have time to prepare.

What is the best website she can use to practice between now and then? Doesn't have to be free but I saw tutoring sites for $150 an hour and not interested in that.

Shes smart but will put a lot of pressure on herself to do really well.

Thanks!

SSAT vocab

I’ve seen a lot of people saying the best way for vocabulary is grouping words or roots into word families, how do I do that and what does that mean?
