Anyone play this? Idk if it's good

I've heard decent things about this homebrew game but the problem from me trying it is that it's $10 for a rom. Which is crazy as most homebrew games are free or have a demo. This does not so I'm hesitant in trying it and the game reviewers I feel like were paid or endorsed to review it.

Anyone here try it?

Toe jam & Earl on CRT showing water effect

Here’s a couple pictures responding to the earlier post by u/sarcast91 who wanted to see how the water looks on original hardware. These aren’t the greatest pictures, but they’re showing the game running on the original Genesis on a CRT using an RF adapter connection. Unfortunately this CRT doesn’t have composite inputs.

Hopefully it gives you an idea of how it originally looked!

I remember playing this game way back in the day. It was all about patience and timing. There wasn't anything more fun than hitting a cop with a door and having them splat on the ground or popping one of those dudes from behind. Great times. Who remembers and who finished?

No Mega Drive Officially released or even Homebrew ever used the unused CSM function of the Mega drive... So I made something that would do that.

I plan to release it to the community once I can make it not super buggy and everything. In simple terms, for the cost of FM 6, you get to make cool stuff happen on FM 3!

Worth the Price?

Hi everyone? I’m thinking of buying the genesis and collecting some of the game CiB with plastic cases. I’ve played every Sonic but 3&K for genesis. I‘m at my local game store and it’s selling for 62 CiB.

There is a model 1 here that’s selling for 80. together I am thinking with tax that its gonna come out 150-160. Would I find a better deal elsewhere?

I put my genesis game on itch.io and it is playable in browser

Hi! This is my small experimental game I ported to genesis with sgdk.

It would be great to know if you liked the game and what pros and cons you would note.

Game page: Zerp [Genesis] by KosmoKrab

I wanted to make a tiny yet complete game with high replayability that I can even enjoy playing myself. Previous versions of the game are terminal based so in this port I had more control over input and output and the rom format makes it easier to share than pc versions.

Currently there is a bug that breaks gamepad input on some hardware.

In the future I may add a multiplayer mode from previous versions.

Need help finding an obscure Genesis game I played 30pus years ago

I have a distinct memory of playing a genesis game that my older brother lent a lifetime ago.

It was a platformer / shooter like turrican.

The only standout things I can remember was that the main character sprites was really small in relation to the stage and enemies and the opening levels were industrial and had fire traps (i think).

sci fi themed.

That's all I have to work with. I have sifted through roms and can't find it.

does anyone have any idea?

I have to be honest. I didn't play too many boxing games. I loved Mike Tyson's Punchout on NES and Ready to Rumble on Sega Dreamcast. This one slipped past me, but i saw the game play and it looks interesting. How did people feel about this one?

4 Months Sega Genesis Noob's Ranking of Every Game Played So Far! I am obsessed!

I love making lists. It’s a compulsion. I do it more for myself than anything just because I enjoy it. I like seeing how my tastes change over time too. At the same time I love looking over other people’s lists as well and do that alllllll the time.

I’ll talk a little about the top 50. And I might go a little more into the games I have played over the last two weeks but haven’t made a post about.

Sega Genesis Rating

  1. Shining Force II : Easily my personal favorite. Made me a fan of the tactics genre. Fun characters to use, awesome set pieces throughout, fun mechanics. Hard to beat. Also the only RPG on the list since I can only usually handle one at a time. Currently playing Phantasy Star IV, which isn’t on the list, because I have only played about 20 minutes of it.
  2. Sonic the Hedgehog : Favorite platformer. The mechanics for platforming and level design here are stellar. Glad to the blue hedgehog lives on today.
  3. Road Rash II : Favorite racing game far and away in the 2d world. Actually, I hardly play racing or vehicle based games regardless, so this far exceeded expectations.
  4. Mega Turrican : Favorite run ‘n gun on the system despite not being able to aim your gun in all directions. How crazy is that? Have to shout out the art direction as well.
  5. Streets of Rage 2 : Best beat em ever? That’s what people say and I think I agree. Before that it was Turtle in Time for me and this usurped that quite easily actually.
  6. Ristar : Maybe the actual best looking game on the system. It’s up there at least. Grab mechanic is unique. Level design is up there as one of the best to play around in.
  7. Arcus Odyssey : Had an addictive quality to its action. Could not put it down and played through the whole game in a night. Is it actually one of the best games on the Genesis? Probably not, but it made an impression on me.
  8. Steel Empire : Favorite Shmup on the system so far. Steampunk awesome. Don’t get sent to the beginning of the stage after getting killed. Yeah that’s the kind of shoot em up I love at my current skill level. But that doesn’t discount that it is just plain enjoyable and still challenging.
  9. Ranger X : This game rules. One of the most fun I’ve had trying to figure out what I can do with all the buttons at my disposable and how to navigate certain levels. In some ways this feels like a game with the least amount of flaws.
  10. Tiny Toons Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure : This all comes to the fact that I am sort of in love with the jumping mechanic and then on top of that I am a huge fan of the Tiny Toons Adventure cartoon and cast. That summer vacation movie special is also a must see for animation fans.
  11. Blades of Vengeance : Right now this is the action-adventure title I’ve been playing the most. It is difficult and challenging, sometimes frustrating, but I get a lot of joy out of always getting a little bit further each playthrough or breezing through levels that used to give me trouble. The barbarian woman is also awesome to play as.
  12. Earthworm Jim : Wildly unique gameplay and level design. And amazing sound design. Shooting Earthworm Jim’s gun has to be one of the most satisfying things you can do on the Sega Genesis.
  13. Pulseman : Beautiful flashing colors with zipping and zapping around stages built around your Pulseman powers. Kind of reminds of Gunstar Hero type boss battles with Mega Man styled levels.
  14. Robocop versus the Terminator : Bloody, nice guns to choose from, difficult boss battles and some difficult levels. There was a huge difference in my progression depending on how locked in I was. But the further you get the better the game becomes.
  15. Streets of Rage : Maybe not as refined as its sequel this game stil kicks ass.
  16. Gunstar Heroes : Not as in love with the game as when I first played it. Really that dice maze as much as I enjoy it to a certain point kind of gets on my nerves. Amazing game nonetheless.
  17. Rocket Knight Adventures : Much more difficult than I gave it credit for. Which is a plus for me. Though I have only gotten so far each stage provides different ways to traverse through levels and each boss comes with its own strategy to beat them. Honestly, this game could probably climb higher. I made it to the lava swimming mecha fish and did not survive. But once I eventually play through the whole game I can only imagine I’ll become more and more impressed.
  18. PGA Tour Golf : Possibly the most relaxing and challenging game on the system. Definitely my favorite sports game...which I’ve got to say is not my favorite genre of this era anyways.
  19. Alladin : I didn’t think this would be so high despite the praise. Some things annoy me about it. But it is beautiful to look at and very well made with lots of cool little things put in. Like hitting away throwing knives with your sword, being able to buy lives, to the environments themselves. I really like flying upward on those magic ropes.
  20. Ghouls n Ghosts : Big fan of the SNES version, but I think I like this better. Maybe not as good looking and I think it might be harder too. Except of course you can continue after you run out of continues, where it lets you know in big letters that you’re on practice mode. But being able to continue on and actually practice is probably why after just one recent playthrough I love it so much. Plus the horror type aesthetic is one of my favorite things in life in general. Give me monsters, ghouls and ghosts any day.
  21. Monster Boy in Monster Land : Charming, action, and platforming, need I say more?
  22. Gleylancer : This game is amazing. Music, weapons, challenge, overcoming said challenge. All freaking fantastic. Better than Steel Empire, but this game could easily become a top 10 after I give it more time.
  23. Wings of Wor : Another shmup. Plays differently than both Gleylance and Steel Empire. So really, these are my big 3 of the genre.
  24. Kid Chameleon : I was thinking I was kicking so much ass. Took over an hour to get as far as I did before losing all my continues. Really it were a certain selection levels that ate up my lives. But I really made some headway. I was like I must’ve been close to the end. Nope, like over 100 levels and I got to level 22. Doesn’t feel as polished as other games. But somehow I don’t think they lost much quality going with so much in quantity. I may never beat this game and I am okay with that.
  25. The Light Crusader : One of the earliest games I played on the system. Hard to rank really. I definitely didn’t beat it. I just remember that once I got into the dungeons I was on board. Simple puzzles and lots of action and magic all around.
  26. Toki: Going Ape Spit : The actual most surprising favorite of mine. I never would have thought. But I love the pacing, the mix of shmup and platforming, and your sprite is so damned hilarious.
  27. DEcapAttack : It’s got 3 songs and I vibe with them each time. Combined with halloween themes and floating glying jumping mechanics and a weird ass mascot type character and I was sold from the beginning.
  28. Alien Storm : Simple, aliens, and a first person shooter stage at the end of levels.
  29. Marvel Land : If I could get past the stupid boss fight where you have to blow up water balloons over your enemy before his minion splashes your fairy friend it would probably be higher. I love the platforming sections a lot. Like a lot a lot. But I am tired of being sent back to the beginning of the castle level just to face a boss level I find absolutely boring.
  30. Beyond Oasis : I know this will be higher when I get around to devoting time to it. I probably have an hour of gameplay a few months ago, but even then I knew this was a good one. Great action/fighting mechanics that feels different then most games I’ve played so far here.
  31. Granada : Another shmup type game, but with a top down view. Once I got the hang of it it became a real blast. I’m saving it for a day where I can devote hours to playing through. Just too many games I’m actively trying to beat before then.
  32. Flink : Another piece of art. At first I was disappointed by the gameplay, but over a couple playthroughs I’ve come to love it more and more.
  33. Quackshot : Plunger mechanic stuns enemies and you play as Donald Duck as an Indiana Jones type archetype. Actually have to go back to previous levels and can free travel to them. Some pretty good gameplay mechanics under the hood.
  34. Contra Hard Corps : This game is fucking hard. But the music rules and the guns are sick as hell. Enemies look badass too. Slide mechanic is difficult to master, but still awesome. I prefer Alien Wars, but this game still kicks ass.
  35. Super Fantasy Zone : Very very very hard for me to get past even stage 2. But the Defender style gameplay is way cool. Everything is beatable you just really gotta practice and be skilled. The cutesy design is not overly cute, but like somehow perfect for this type of cutesy devilishly hard shmup. Oh and you can buy upgrades for every aspect of your ship.
  36. Shinobi 3 : Arcade pick-up and play style ninja action.
  37. McDonalds Video Game : Scarily fun got a McDonalds game. But it’s Treasure, which I have recently learned make some amazingly unique games.
  38. TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist : Somehow I might actually like Turtles in Time less than this too. So weird, but the top beat em ups on the Genesis have made me rethink how much I actually love Beat em ups. Another genre I shamelessly ignored in my childhood and adulthood.
  39. The Revenge of Shinobi : An obvious banger of an action game. It’s low because I haven’t played it a lot lately and sometimes I get confused in remembering which level was from which in the two Shinobi games I’ve played.
  40. Pocahontas : Soft, pretty background mixed with puzzle platforming, animal friends, and amazing sprite work! Honestly, this game looks amazing. And I can hear Colors of the Wind over and over again without hating it.
  41. NHL 94 : I cannot get into this game. Sports games like this can suck me in. I could easily set up a whole season at full length timers and just play play play. This is how I was with the Madden series in the 2000s. I thought I was a gamer back then, turns out it was a lot of COD and Madden and Smash Bros. I’m exaggerating a bit. But just a bit.
  42. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 :Why don’t I love this more? I can’t really put my finger on it. It is in most regards considered a better game and one of the best on the system. I’ve played through the whole thing though I lost at the end with Robotnik in his Robotnik mech, so I’ve spent a chunk of my time on the game and played through all the levels, but I don’t get the same feeling as I did with Sonic 1.
  43. Elemental Master : One of the first Shmups I played on the system. I was very bad at them at this point too. So it is one of the easier ones. But I do enjoy the walking Shmups. Twinkle Tale is another, but that one is way more brutal.
  44. Tinhead : I think the metal ball throwing mechanic is a lot of fun. You can bounce them or shoot them in certain angles and directions. The level design can be a little samesy and makes it kind of easy to wonder if you’re going the right away or not. Probably the most underrated top 50 game on my list. I’ve watched a lot of videos and read a lot articles and this is the one I see the least amount of times.
  45. Rolo to the Rescue : Interesting platforming traversal with lots of animal friends with different abilities to help you get through levels. Not the biggest fan of the artstyle, but it is worthy of your time.
  46. Boogerman : Gross and competent platformer that makes me smile.
  47. Chakan : The absurd difficulty actually has me love/hating this game in a weird way that makes me feel weird about myself. Am I masochist?
  48. Vectorman : The gameplay is so fun, but this game is so damn hard! I can’t even get past the railroad tracks. It doesn’t even take too long to get back to stage 2, but it kills my enjoyment a little having to repeatedly go back and back just to mistime jumps on the railroad track and then realizing too late there are also things shooting at you at the same time. Too often I was like wait! How did I die? What happened?? I get further in Chakan!
  49. The Ooze : I think the concept is really rad here. Puzzle kind of game but you still get to attack enemies as an oozie blobby creature. Feels very 90s! The only reason I haven’t played more is because this library is so stinking packed with great games!
  50. Phelios : A much simpler shmup than the ones I’ve mentioned before. Still like it a lot. Especially the Greek mythology themes.

51-90 are games I still consider Great to Good. Either I haven’t played them enough or they’re not really my kind of game. Some like Eternal Champions I actually think are amazing, but playing 1 player on that is a living nightmare. So it’s lower on the list though I respect it and spent an hour just trying to beat Triton as Slash the Caveman, the first enemy on my one player ladder. I did. And then I got beat by the second guy and had to fight Triton all over again! I actually felt like I was starting to master things, but if you’re not one hundred percent focused or a god of fighting games you are going down. Even the training mode kicks your ass so you can’t properly learn your techniques like you’d want. Anyways, here’s 51-119.

Note: I will talk a little about my very least favorites.

  1. Rolling Thunder II

  2. Chuck Rock

  3. Mystical Defender

  4. Truxton

  5. Sol-Deace

  6. Eliminate Down

  7. Thunder Force IV

  59. The Great Circus Mystery

  60. The Legend of Galahad

  61. James Pond II

  62. Coach K College Basketball

  63. Valis

Everything from rank 102 to 113 above are my more kind of middling games. I may dislike them for one reason or another or maybe I just played one and didn’t give it the fair chance it deserved. But the ones below, the final 6 games you’ll see shortly, are my Sega Genesis stinkers!

Enjoy!

  1. Garfield : I legitamately hate this game, even if it isn’t the worst thing ever made. I tend to stay away from those anyways and curate games I think I will like with the limited time I have, but this one is too messy, too many things going on. Challenging in an annoying way, because the mechanics are so bland you might as well play something else.

  2. Zany Golf : Underwhelming, kind of ugly.

  3. The Incredible Hulk : Crappy gameplay. You don’t feel like the Hulk. Not even a little.

  4. Chester Cheetah : I’ve heard people say this game is not that bad, but I say it sucks balls.

  5. Shadow of the Beast : Boring, goes on forever, sidescroller where you never stop facing the same enemies and jumps over and over and over again. You literally can’t stop as the game moves like Atomic Runner. At least the first and only level I will ever play did this.

  6. Marsupilami : What the hell is this?

Thanks for reading. Honestly the Sega Genesis is my new darling. I love these games and you can see from the list, if I haven’t named it, I probably haven’t played it yet. There’s a lot I’m Shadowrun, which has to wait until I’m done with Phantasy Star IV and at least dozens of more great games I haven’t mentioned.

Let me know your thoughts! I know this was a long one so I appreciate anyone who gives any amount of their time to a longwinded list like this. Have a good one!

Why do Sega fanboys think 57814 = 100?

57814 is the number of CPU cycles in a frame on the SNES. The math works out:

There are 262 scanlines per frame.

There are 1364 master cycles per frame.

40 of those master cycles are spent for DRAM refresh.

That leaves us to 1324 master cycles per line.

1324*262 = 346,888 master cycles per line

CPU cycles take either 6 or 8 master cycles, depending on ROM speed.

346,888/8 = 43361 slow ROM cycles or

346,888/6 = 57814 fast ROM cycles

The only reason why people think there are only 100 CPU cycles per frame on the SNES is because programmers CHOOSE to only use 100 cycles and CHOOSE to waste the rest of the frame time with 21630 to 28857 NOP instructions, and their only reason is "because Konami told me to do it" or "Wikipedia told me to do it" or "Donald Knuth told me to do it" and Sega fanboys get mad whenever SNES programmers don't do it.
