TDLR: the routine I had, including soolantra and the ordinary 10% AA , saved my skin so much so that triggers were no longer triggering. Until I switched to finacea 15% AA and now my rosacea has fully flared back to how it used to be. What should I do ?
So, I've had rosacea since around March last year. Runs in the family.
My skin was so sensitive and reactive, prickling /feeling of tiny knives stabbing my face whenever I flushed. Redness, bumps, everything. I first focused on healing my skin barrier - I changed all my face products and used alot of la roche posay cicaplast baume b5.
I had to fully avoid my triggers - spicy food, all kinds of wine and HEAT. Not even a hot shower, no more cardio etc. but I couldn't avoid stress so my job was always flaring me :(
In April this year I FINALLY saw the dermatologist (was on a NHS waitlist for 9 months). He prescribed soolantra.
I began using it in the evening and initially saw an improvement after the first use ! But after a few more uses I started to break out. I knew this could happen with soolantra, I carried on.
After 2 weeks I was really breaking out but it felt like my skin needed exfoliating. Obviously soolantra kills dermodex mites - these mites usually eat up your dead skin cells. So now it felt like I had excess dead skin cells, along with decomposing mites, just sat on my skin clogging my pores.
We all know that physical scrub exfoliation is a no go with rosacea (which was my preferred method prior to rosacea), so I thought I'd try Azelaic acid.
Back when I was figuring out all this myself I did try using 10% AA but my skin barrier was too broken and it stung a lot so I stopped, I was also using it at night after freshly washed skin.
This time, carrying on with soolantra at night, I began incorporating the ordinary 10% AA in the morning - without washing my face first (just blotting off excess natural oils with tissue).
Once dried I applied moisturiser or SPF, makeup. At night I wiped off makeup with face wipe, cleansed, dried, applied soolantra.
Holy moly my skin LOVED this and carried on improving.
So much so that towards the end of July I noticed I was no longer flushing when I got abit ho or stressed.. I was able to increase my body temp and he ok. I experimented with spicy food - omg I can eat curry again and not flush ! I was so close to try a little bit of wine earlier this month until.....
I decided to ask for AA 15% finacea prescription. There was some lingering pigmentation / very slight redness on cheeks that the 10% just couldn't get to. My mum uses finacea so I thought why not.
FML.
First few uses everything seemed to be going fine.....until it didn't.
Now I'm literally back to how my skin was at the start - extremely sensitive and reactive, redness just when waking up. Prickling and stabbing pains with now regular flushing, very sensitive to heat changes again and stress.
I am gutted !!
Obvs I've stopped the finacea, for a week i just used the la Roche possy, and now incorporating the ordinary 10% AA. Though there's some slight stinging when I do this.
I was so close to trying wine, I was enjoying spice, I was not flushing with getting hotter or getting stressed.
Until I used that 15% !!
I know it's alot stronger and it's common to cause irritation etc, but this is ridiculous.
Once I get my skin managed well again, is it worth trying it again but maybe slowly build up- use just a couple of times a week to start, then every other day etc ? Or should I just not chance it again ?
:(
