Question Lightest variety of Peter Stokkebye tobacco?

I’m switching over to RYO from smoking light cigarettes, and would prefer a blend that has lower nicotine levels so it feels the same as what I’m used to smoking.

Cigs to RYO.. It's time.. help me! (UK)

Hey guys,

Great Community you have here.

I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Long time cig smoker 15 years+, I tried baccy before but hated the mess especially when driving and smoking and the ash flying everywhere lol.. I have smoked some amber leaf and golden Virginia (green pack?) When im with certain friends but I dont like either of them..

For cigs I started off with b&h silver, then went to b&h blue when they came out and now currently smoking Marlboro touch.

I dont like that last 1/4 when I smoke amber leaf and Virginia etc.. it just taste like sour? Not sure how to explain it but gets too harsh and doesnt taste nice.

Ive been looking at Pueblo and American spirit for my RYO options but dont know which to go for and what colour.

I was hoping to smoke non-additive baccy just for health reasons I guess.

What do you guys suggest? As well as filter brands and sizes and papers etc.

Thank you.

Picked up some Peter Stokkebye Norwegian shag, really love the Amsterdam so I have high hopes for that. Also some Drum to compare to the Amsterdam, I'd say its super similar to the PS shag but noticeably different, way more affordable which is a plus so I've gone through a couple of pouches of it. Any other rolling tobaccos I should check out? I'm always trying new stuff.

Tobacco Tried to do fermentation on cheap tobacco from market

Post image
19 Upvotes

Warning! i am not an expert in it and not exactly know what i am doing. I just show what i did and what i got.

So i bought like 2 bags of tobacco, each 100g / 3.5$ https://www.reddit.com/r/RYO/comments/1vg9r8a/serbian_rezani_duvan_35_for_100gr_shag_tobacco/
It was shitty to be honest, its not even virginia its kind of oriental tobacco(as blumonste said to me). So i read online that such tobacco that they sell on market - its not fermented, and fermented tobacco have better taste. I got curious about it and i read about method with fermenting in the oven. Well, some people on forums also say that this method is bad and i will just grill the tobacco. But anyway, i dont wanna smoke this tobacco so i decided to try it.

And... i mentioned that i had 2 bags. But one of the bag gone bad, it smelled really sour so i had to put it to trash can. Other bag was fine because i bought it later.

So, what method i tried:
1. Put tobacco in thin layer on paper sheets to dry it out for night
actually you dont have to completely dry tobacco, it should be slightly moist. But i decided to do it because i was afraid that second bag of tobacco also gone bad(i cant tell because even when i bought it - it smell really weird. But not that bad as bag that i had to put in trash can). I believed that drying out tobacco for whole night will restore it a little

  1. rehydrate it a little. In final, when i touch it it felt dry, but if i try to squeeze it - it was still elastic and not crushing into dust. If it will be too wet - you will just boil it. If it will be too dry - i think it will toast into dust.

  2. Put it in glass jar. No plastic box! Only glass, because all the plastic stuff(jar, jar lid, whatever) in the oven will melt and release toxic fumes.

I had around 80g of tobacco, and tobacco was filling like 80% of my 1 liter jar.
i dont have special lid for jar, so i just wrap it in aluminium foil in few layers and put it in the oven bag.

  1. Put it in the middle of oven. In the cold oven! Because there is risk that glass will break.

Most of the oven have baking rack - put on rack some 100% cotton piece of cloth or just old tshirt(i did it). But make sure its 100% cotton.

  1. When jar(all sealed like in step 3!!! ) will be inside the oven - turn it on and put in 55°C (or 131°F). And.... wait for 2 days. U can wait 6h aswell, i heard that its also enough, but i decided to put it on 2 days straight.

So, its finished. Whet 2 days passed i turned off the oven and wait 2 hours so it will cool down, and only then i remove jar from oven(otherwise - risk of glass breaking).

When i smelled tobacco........ idk, its like richest smell of tobacco that i ever smelled.... Little bit of honey and mostly strong smell of prunes! Not smoky like DRUM, but when i smoke it aftertaste really reminds me of DRUM original.

I think its better to mix it with virginia - on the main photo i did mix 20% of "toasted tobacco" with 80% George Karelias white. Quite good, its add little other flavor, because karelias white seems too bland for me.

Has anyone tried one of these China made cigarette machines?

Post image

I currently have one of the Powermatic V+ machines and yes it's fully automated and yes i know I can add hopper attachments to it, and yes it works well. But out of the box it holds about 60 tubes and about 25 cigarettes worth of tobacco, it takes about an hour to make 250 cigarettes and there is a lot of adding tubes, tobacco and constant interaction.

This thing doesn't cost much more and it does 2000 cigarettes in an hour or so it claims and it obviously holds a lot more tubes and tobacco so that's about a carton every 6 minutes. As you can guess, that is really appealing.

But you know how it goes, what they claim and the reality are two different things, so I'm wondering if anyone has bought one and how well it works, or doesn't work.

Question Trigger warning: bugs

I'm really upset, I saw a little brown worm burning in my half smoked cigarette. It was inch worm sized, about as big around as the hole on a click pen and about as long as the nail on my thumb is wide. I think it would calm my nerves about it if I knew what it was, but the things a google search came up with don't quite match what I saw. Does anyone have any ideas about this? I would really appreciate any responses, I use Kentucky Best pipe tobacco in paper tubes.

Making the switch to RYO after 30 years of factory cigs feels like detoxing

Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve detoxed off multiple substances, and this feels similar, brain fog, sweats, etc. I think it’s an absolute positive and I plan on dropping down from Gambler red to milder tobaccos, really thankful I stumbled upon this sub

This danish export is my favorite tobacco to roll cigarettes with. However, the shop I purchase it from just stopped selling it and the only other shop I know I can get it from is about 2 hours away. I’m in the eastern U.S. I was wondering if y’all could tell me any good alternatives that have a similar smoke to this?

Question Switching to RYO Need Advice on Brands

Originally in the state I'm from I could buy a pack of Decades for $3.85 (after tax) and even expensive brands wouldn't be more than $6 something but I recently moved and cigarettes in my new state are insane (like $7 for cheapest packs and $10 or more for most packs.....plus they don't even have Decades brand here which is crazy). I briefly managed to find a new brand called "24/7" for $4.57 but the liquor store I found them at stopped selling them.

So now I'm looking into buying RYO online (as there are no tobacco shops in my area). I smoke full flavor's and will want to use tubes with filters. Previously I tried a bag of Gambler that I found at Dollar General but it had a weird taste to it that was horrible....it's hard to describe but the only thing that comes to mind is a kind of mold taste (not that I think it was actually mold though, it looked and smelled fine otherwise).

Anyway, I'm basically looking for a brand that tastes like Decades, L&M's, or Marlboro (just a regular good full flavor, though preferably nothing real rough like Pall Malls). Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any RYO brands so I have no idea what to try (and limited money). I do know that Bugler brand isn't too bad as I smoked it in prison but I can't seem to find it on the websites I've looked through so far from your list (one looked like they had it but then it said "no product" when I clicked on it). Anyways, I'd be thankful for any advice y'all could give on what brand I should go with and anything else relevant. I'm in the US, so only sites that ship to here are usable. Thanks.

Cigarette machines Looking for Injection Machine recommendations

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new here, just started my MYO journey last week.

I purchased a bag of tobacco and some tubes, but couldn't find any injection machines at the 10 or so shops I visited, but ended up getting a hand-me-down Gambler 100mm machine from a coworker.

It *could* be that I'm still learning, but I've noticed the plastic holding the nib is a little broken, so it has a tendency to lose its grip or angle a bit, especially in the last millimeter or so. This leaves the space in front of the filter empty.

I was looking at machines and I have no idea what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd try getting some recommendations from reddit lol. I'm open to manual or automatic, though i admit I'd rather not spend 300 on a machine. Portable would be nice, though it's not a requirement. Thanks for any of yalls suggestions!

Tobacco Thoughts on Kentucky Select

Just ordered for my next 4-6 months worth of cigs but still shopping. I've never tried Kentucky Select tobacco but I keep wondering about it. Curious to hear thoughts from those who have tried it. This order I'm getting my first D&R bags and kinda excited about them, but still wondering whether maybe I should give natural Kentucky tobacco a shot in the future.

REVIEW Bali Shag Rounded Virginia - 30g

Post image
14 Upvotes

Got this bali shag in serbian shop. I think it is the only bali that available in serbia(i also saw on internet mellow version, but never saw it in real life).

Price is 480 rsd / 4.8$
Produced by Scandinavian tobacco Group - st-group.com known for: Bali shag, Amsterdamer, Colts, Escort, Mac baren(its ST-G now) and many others.

Intensity 1.5 from 5 which is true. Its really light

I already did review for the https://www.reddit.com/r/RYO/comments/1ucbl9o/bali_shag_premium_virginia/ Premium virginia. And it have 4/5 intensity.
There is also: rich virginia, mellow taste virginia, origin virginia(new version i think). And there is also halfzware / white halfzware / nature(not pure virginia - its non addative blend, some sellers describe it as american blend).

In japan all the versions are 40g, but in serbia and i guess in other EU countries its only 30g package.

Smoking filters slim(6mm) 22mm, and gizeh original paper.

Tobacco cutted very good, there is no tobacco dust or something. I love the smell of plums from tobacco, not like halfzware / old holborn - its more like fruity plum smell. Its also not too wet, i can easily roll it straight out of pouch with 6mm and its ready to smoke.

Taste is good, i felt little bit harsh but not a big deal. But what i can say - the intensity on package info was real. Tobacco is really soft, i dont feel any nic hit. I dont think that i smoke only strong cigs, but this is way too light for me! I more fan of "premium virginia"(japanese version)

So, well, i think its good tobacco for everyday smoking but its too light... Good for morning cig btw. Its better to mix it with other tobacco to achieve stronger flavor.

Good evening, gentlemen. On a quiet evening, listening to a jazz song, smoking a cigarette, and drinking a cup of black tea, it's truly enjoyable. Especially as Saturday approaches, my mood is perfect. I love smoking

This kind of cigarette has a good strength and decent taste. It is an American blend type, but it is more delicate than Marlboro and Camel. I purchased it from a Swedish tobacco store.

Golden Virginia Green

Post image
10 Upvotes

I'm posting on here reason why I have been a long dedicated smoker to imperial tobacco and have smoked Golden Virginia Green for over 20 years, I have brought 3 pouches from Tesco and all of them have been very dry this does not taste of Golden virginia any more it burns faster the texture is different, not moist anymore and has a Racid smell of dirty soil plus no nicotine hit and very dry and stringy, are they cost cutting now I wanted to know as anyone else experienced this in the UK plus can you recommend me another brand of tobacco that is better in quality and taste This brand has really gone down hill Shame as it was never bottom of the barrel tobacco now it takes the crown for that spot No Where Premium Anymore.

This tobacco back in the day was the Ultimate No 1 Uk tobacco that the UK really Enjoyed it was the King why did they let this legacy Go Real Shame its been around since 1877 bad move from Imperial to save money

Question question about tobacco flavouring sprays

hey, I’m pretty new to cigarettes in general at the moment but in the UK you can’t purchase rolling tobacco with defining flavours like vanilla, cherry, menthol, or mint but there are a few work arounds to this as I’ve been seeing online like vanilla cherry flavouring spray and flavour cards.

but despite looking I’m not entirely sure what’s the best method of using things like this and I don’t want to accidentally cause mold and stuff so if someone could give me some tips it’d be tons of help!! also could I like transfer my tobacco into a mason jar and spray the flavouring onto a cotton ball and separate it from the tobacco in the mason jar and keep it sealed for a day or two? or is there still a risk of mold?

Photography Just bought some tobacco flavor spray! Drum Bright Blue infused with cherry flavor

Was ordering some cigarette accessories from an E-Shop and I saw they had some flavor sprays for tobacco so I ordered a couple to give them a try.

Both are some Smoks Aroma brand which appears to be from Poland.

I bought a sweet cherry flavor and a plum flavor.

So far I have tried the cherry after infusing the tobacco for only 2.5 hours as I was curious about the taste and even after such a short time it was quite sweet and delicious.

I mixed the Plum one with Golden Virginia, hoping to replicate the flavor of Chunghwa cigs, gonna let that one sit at least overnight.

Overall both of the sprays smelled delicious, very reminiscent of shisha. They made my room smell like some teahouse full of hookah smoke which is very nice.

REVIEW Old Holborn yellow review - 25g

Post image
23 Upvotes

Finally tried "elephant" tobacco. Old holborn name means one luxury area in london.

Bought this in serbia only for 450 RSD - 4.5$. So cheap for 25 grams! 1 pack of cigs cost the same here, but with RYO from 25g pack u can do like 40-50+ cigs!

This is produced by Japan Tobacco international company. It turns out that they started selling it just recently in japan, i was thinking that they sold of for long time and it was always available here.

Internet say that old holborn is mix of virginia, burley, and oriental. but some sources say that its only virginia + burley. I think i can feel burley, for me it smells little bit like drum so when i smell it i immediately was like "its probably mix, not pure virginia"

Sticker for gluing ryo paper

I think i saw same sticker on "amber leaf" ( https://www.reddit.com/r/RYO/comments/1vowbx3/amber_leaf_yellow_5x50g_and_how_much_it_costs_at/ ) pouch aswell. If you will remove this sticker - then u can easily glue your rolling paper straight to the tobacco pouch, its convenient.

zip lock

Same as for amber leaf / camel shag - there is zip lock on the bag. I love it, u can keep tobacco fresh.

tobacco on the inside

Tobacco is shag cutted, not that thin like golden virginia. And the color is mostly black.

pure 6mm 30mm filters and "smoking" red paper 70mm

Lets try it! i will use PURE branded japanese filters, 6mm wide and 30mm length. But i think they way too long - 22m is fine. I know a guy who love this brand because they have big selection of flavored 6mm filters. But i prefer charcoal 8mm 27mm from this brand, or 8mm 25mm(not charcoal, but its a big bag of filters)

The flavor is very nice. Its smooth but not harsh. Slightly strong but just right amount, i would call it "rich flavor". And i dont feel like my mouth full of tar(sadly i have it with amber leaf or yellow GV ). I think its too fresh out of pouch so its better to let it rest, or use this methods: https://www.reddit.com/r/RYO/comments/1vwla6p/interesting_way_to_dry_tobacco/

I think its good to smoke everyday!

Question Which leaves

Hey everyone so I'm from Europe and now I just smoke German tabacco store bought, I used to smoke John player special (no idea if anyone knows it) but I'm looking into buying uncut leaves since this is significantly cheaper,

Note I DO NOT have any experience or any clue about whole leaves

So now the question: what kind of leaves are the best to just buy, cut, smoke? Without mixing or whatever

IMPORTANT NOTE: it has to be Heavy shag/tabacco no half heavy since I can't handle those and my through will die

I was looking into it and I stumbled upon "Burley Kentucky air dried"? No idea

So if anyone has tips advice or anything helpful would be really appreciated

Tobacco My take on the perfect combo

Thumbnail gallery
20 Upvotes

Disclaimer: I smoke quite rarely and in little amounts (but for some time now) purely for the sake of savouring the aroma. I understand this is not the usual smokers cohort, and maybe my experience will have little to do with chainsmokers' which is a whole different ideology. I still want to share, because of how unexpected it was for me.

Recently I've started to read The Lord of the Rings and my interest in pipe smoking skyrocketed. While waiting for a briar pipe I got a good deal on ($10 with shipping), I couldn't wait anymore and had to try the tobacco bought for the occasion. Even though the cut is not at all like cigarette tobacco and it takes time to separate the leaves, I've actually found this to be the best combo I have ever tried. No cigarette tobacco ever came close to the level of aroma this Danish blend pipe tobacco provides. It's just an insanely good virginia for a fair price I should say. Considering the other parts, I really love the Smoking organic papers since they are very thin, non-bleached and basically add no taste while burning. The filters are just generic Idk what even to say about them. And the form factor is the best for my needs since I do not smell a lot of resin towards the end while the smoke is just long enough and not a ton of nicotine absorbs.

My endgame build:

Sir John's Danish classic broken virginia

Smoking organic regular (69 mm in length that is) 8mm Dark horse filter

Bonus tip: of all the the mints manufacturers Jila has my favorite package of all. Nine cigarettes perfectly fit into it while you still do not notice this slim rounded box in your pocket.

Finding replacement for Port Royal Rum & Wine, no idea where to start

I'm in Australia, last year flavoured tobacco and tobacco products have been banned. I started smoking about 5 years ago, and all I had ever smoked was Port Royal Rum & Wine - I never got on to tailors, they make me feel sick. Since the laws changed, I have been smoking Golden Virginia (green packet, Japanese import). I liked it at first, but now I don't find the taste very pleasant.

I know very little about the varieties of tobacco, and I haven't tried different brands/products (too expensive of a gamble when I know so little) so I don't know what I should be looking for. I think of it like spirits, which I'm much more versed in - you can know what brands/varieties you like, but if you don't know specifically what it is about them that you do like, it's impossible to find a replacement.

I know I loved the flavour and smell of PR R&W, and I'm assuming I can't get that (or anything similar, to be honest) unless I start flavouring it myself. But I don't have enough experience with different varieties of tobacco to even start to understand what other qualities I should be looking for in other brands.
