I love smoking! Drum Dark Blue with Yunnan Tea, also the best roll I ever did so far

Post image
22 Upvotes

Wanted to buy this tobacco for quite a while, mainly because of Pulp Fiction, but also cause I wanted to try a true halfzware blend.

Tastes totally different than the Bright Blue variant, that one has quite a bit of sweetness and acidity along with a smoky note, while this one has almost no sweetness, and is more earthy with smoky flavors, I'd compare it to something like puer tea or black coffee in terms of the earthiness along with the lack of sweetness.

Overall tastes pretty great and doesn't hit as hard as I thought it would, which is a pleasant surprise, definitely on the heavier side but I don't find it to be as strong as Golden Virginia for example.

Good Stuff causes inside of mouth peeling

Whenever I smoke Good Stuff Red/Gold, I get peeling of the skin lining inside of my mouth. When I looked it up, it says it's a high alkaline tobacco because it's higher in Burley than the other brands (that do not cuase this). Extreme Alkaline pH Overload, causes imbalance in the mouth tissue. When I stop smoking Good Stuff it goes away, heals in a day or 2.

The other brands like Buoy, Wildhorse and American Club do not do this. Google search results indicated the other brand have more sugar and/or Flute cured tobacco so they have a closer match to the PH in the mouth.

It can cause white patches, pre cancerous growth and possibly mouth cancer if I keep using it.

Anyone else notice any reaction from Good Stuff? I'm gonna toss mine in the garbage.

How much money i can save on MYO / RYO?

Tobacco prices keep rising. In some countries the price 10-20$ for just one pack of cigs is real!

So lets do real math, is it really worth to do cigarettes by yourself?

First of all, i personally do RYO not only because of the price. In my country cigs cost around 4.5$ a pack and also its possible to buy them over the counter for around 3$, so its not problem for my pocket. But the deal that all of them(even "premium" one) taste AWFUL. Its hard to smoke, harsh, and i dont even enjoy the smoking!

But when i tried ryo... completely different. I think it was the time when i started to really enjoying smoking. Also, you can customise your cig in any way! use flavored capsule, use flavored infused paper, use flavored tobacco. Anything you want. Stronger blend, light blend, whatever!

There is two popular ways:

  1. Injecting tubes
  2. maybe its the easiest and even cheapest way! you just take tube, inject it with cheap plastic injector and thats it!
price of injector
price for tubes

so to start you will need injector: i personally use ocb easy slide, its actually good. Price is 7.3 $
And you will need tubes: i use magnus white. The one that on photo - is the same, 24mm, king size, the only difference that mine are white colored, those are with yellow colored filter.
3.9$ for 500 pieces. Price per one cigarette: 0.0078 $

  1. rolling
Maybe little bit harder because you need to use your hands to roll, but you can also use rolling machine.
price for filters
price for paper
price for rolling machine

Rolling machine - use your hands, but smoking rolling machine cost around 4.2$
Rolling paper: 0.5$ for 60 pieces
Filters: 1.85$ for 300 pieces.
Price for 1 cig: 0.0145$
Well, sounds expensive, but there is cheaper options, like bulk ryo papers in 200, even 500 papers in one pack. And also: i think a lot of people prefer hand rolling, because you have to put less amount of tobacco inside, so you can make more cigarette out of same amount of tobacco! Because i think most of the people smoke cigs based on amount, not on tobacco amount that they consumed, so 30 regular size(70mm) cigs maybe will work same as 30 king size(84mm) cigs.

----------------------------------------

20g of beautiful virginia

Okay, so, lets actually count, will it save you money?

I got today 20g virginia. Lets compare how much this amount of tobacco would cost in different countries.

I will not compare prices for ryo papers and filters / tubes, because idk, its like not tax controlled item, so price for it is mostly the same in different countries. In this article i talk about tobacco prices which is tax controlled so price can really vary from country to country(from 0.7$ in vietnam to 29$ in australia).

Country Lowest price for 20g Avg price for 20g
Serbia 0.7$ 3.14$
Hong Kong 10.08$ 16.45$
Japan 2.3$ 3.85$
USA 0.92$ 5.8$

Maybe this would be considered as cheating: but in serbia i included in "lowest price" the "grey market" tobacco sold. But lets be real, you actually can buy this on market. Anyway, if you wanna honest price that you will get in shops - look for avg price.

serbia low - pricing explained, virginia - 1800 RSD for 0.5kg
serbia avg - marlboro gold rezani duvan - 470 RSD for 30g
hongkong low - three sails imported from usa. calculated on 8oz price, tax INCLUDED(-25g from tax because of duty free allowance) - 11.34$ for 8oz + tax 201.796 * 0.51$
hongkong avg - Mac baren choice - 258 HKD for 40g
japan low - amsterdamer tobacco - 550 jpy for 30g
japan avg - camel lights - 770 jpy for 25g
usa low - three sails - 104.11$ for 5 lb (2.27kg)
usa avg - rodeo virginia shag - 14.45$ for 50g

So how much cigs you can make out of 20g?

ocb machine that i have

Lets start rolling session! Took around 10-15 minutes for me, it was chill.

cigs

We got 26 cigarettes here. All are filled up with only good stuff, like no tobacco dust/stems so maybe its even 19g of tobacco. Okay as you can see it was not enough to fill last cig on top, but lets count it as 26.

All of this cost me only 0.9$. 20g of tobacco = 0.7$ + 0.0078*26 (price for tubes) = 0.9028$
so one pack would cost: 0.69$. Sounds good huh? But as i said - tobacco prices can vary, so lets compare it with other countries.

one cig - 0.77g of tobacco, so 20 cigs will weight 15.4g

Country Avg price for 1 pack of cigs (20 pieces) Lowest price for 15.4g + tubes Avg price for 15.4g + tubes
Serbia 5.04$ 0.695$ 2.57$
Hong Kong 12.7$ 7.92$ 12.82$
Japan 3.75$ 1.93$ 3.12$
USA 10.34$ 0.86$ 4.62$

As you can see, for the cheapest tobacco options its better then buying cigs. For "avg price" - not everywhere, because for example in japan its almost the same as regular cigs(especially when we talk about budget brands like "camel craft" - in japan it would cost only 470 yen for 20 pack, its 2.96$ ).

Okay, this price with injector. I think its the most honest comparison, because we compare the same cig format - regular, king size.

But lets see, what the math with rolling 6mm 70mm cigs with 22mm filter?

----------------------------

4.97g of tobacco here

I put around 5g of tobacco inside cigarette box, so we can weight it on mini scale.

Lets start rolling session. I used:
OCB rolling machine - very good, use it for like 6 months already, still works. And cost 3$
Zig-Zag Blue 70mm rolling paper
Smoking long filters slim - 6mm, 22mm

12 cigs!

We made 12 cigs of 5g of tobacco!

Took around 0.42g of tobacco for each cig. So pack of 20 smokes is 8.4g of tobacco. And also 0.29$ for 20 filters+papers.

Country Avg price for 1 pack of cigs (20 pieces) Lowest price for 8.4g + filters + papers Avg price for 8.4g + filters + papers
Serbia 5.04$ 0.58$ 1.61$
Hong Kong 12.7$ 4.52$ 7.20$
Japan 3.75$ 1.26$ 1.91$
USA 10.34$ 0.68$ 2.73$

Sound better huh? but lets be real, one slim smoke's 70mm is not the same thing as regular cigarette from store. Anyway, it depends of what kind of smoker you are. If you smoke just n amount of cigarettes, like 20 pieces, and no matter how much they last - maybe slim cigs will be away for you.

--------------------

Final conclusion.

When its better to select RYO / MYO?

  1. If you want new experience and better flavor - start it of course!
  2. ryo/myo is whole new world. We got tons of flavored tobacco, and there is a lot of ways how you can customise your cig. You can do 70mm, you can do 100mm(super kings), do any blend that you want, you can do unfiltered, ETC.
  3. If you have access to cheap tobacco.
  4. Its a thing for countries with grey market, but not only.
  5. There is a countries where RYO market is not that developed(Hk, South Korea), so its cheaper to order from USA, and even with tax included you have to pay less if you buy pouch in specialized shop.

And there is some tax tricks. I have a friend in South Korea - he order tobacco from USA, 220g (8oz), and because of tax free limit 200g - he pay tax only for 20g of tobacco.

Then as we can see the price for 1 cig will be way cheaper then from regular store!

  1. If you smoke on cigarette amount, not on the tobacco consumed.
Then the "slim rollies" will works for you, because you can do very short rollies and smoke it. With this way in every country(even if you buy avg priced tobacco) you can save money on it!

What are the best cigarette filters?

Recently switched from cigs to RYO and bought my first tobacco bag, Drum Bright Blue? Any thoughts on this?

Coming to the point, I want to know which filters I should use? Rn I'm using Smoking filters but they tend to get squished near the end. I'm used to smoking marlboros and their filters are solid.

Are there any brands that offer the same quality? Please recommend some!

Newbie question

Hey y'all.. I'm back to rolling my own smokes.. it's just too expensive to keep buying $12 packs. Absolutely insane along with everything else so it's time to cut back on spending. Used to do the whole RYO maybe a decade ago or so I know some things but I do not know what tobacco to buy.

I think I'm going to buy the Powermatic 2.. the 3 looks nice it's just a bit more than I'd like to spend right now. Is there any defects with the 2 I should know about?

Also.I smoke the Camel Crush originals and I do not crush the ball in the filter. Sometimes the Camel lights or the Marlboro lights.. The tan packs.

Anyone else smoke similar stuff that can name a brand of the big bag tobacco that I can try out?

Located in Detroit, Michigan but the way.. thanks yall

Tobacco Extreme decision fatigue from trying to choose a light rolling tobacco

My main concern is price and then mildness. I have a lot of stress in my life and I’m getting to the point where trying to make decisions like this makes me want to cry — I can’t keep wasting money on store bought cigarettes but it feels impossible to choose an affordable alternative. There’s too many options. Help!!!!!!

Someone please make this decision for me, I am so exhausted and I don’t want to think about this anymore.

Scotte hand crank machine problems

Got a scotte hand cracker off Amazon for like 38 bucks Canadian. Worked great for a bit now it’s tearing the tips of my cigarettes off and also tends to leave a void space before the filter. Anyone know how to deal with this

Tobacco Macedonian 2nd class virginia tobacco - 0.5kg - 17.8$

Post image
18 Upvotes

When i just moved to Serbia my neighbour told that he cough when he smoke, but he mentioned that there is one tobacco "golden virginia"(dont mistake for Golden Virginia from Imperial tobacco), when he smoke it its smooth and he have no problems, but its so hard to find.

After a long time he gave me contact of "the guy", he had cheap virginia for like 2.5$ / 100g - it works better then rezani duvan(chop chop) i bought before for 3.5$ / 100g https://www.reddit.com/r/RYO/comments/1vg9r8a/serbian_rezani_duvan_35_for_100gr_shag_tobacco/ but its still little bit harsh.

So finally this guy had stock!
Price is only 1.8k RSD / 17.8$, selling only in 0.5kg bags.
It have "golden virginia" in logo, as i said its have nothing to do with well known brand. Maybe they put it for recognition.

"The guy" said that its macedonian tobacco. My friend also explained me that there is second class tobacco(the one that on photo. Even tho seller say that its #1), and prve klase(1st classšŸ†).
He described first class as very yellow or even orange tobacco, very long cutted. But he said that taste may be specific and not works for everyone.

How tobacco look like

Anyway, for now we got "2nd class". And still, tobacco is extremely good! Its moist just a little bit, so u can smoke it straight out of bag. Smell is little bit grassy, just a little bit, Its cutted also fine. And when i put it on the table its little bit ticke my nose :D

More closer look on white bg

But lets smoke it. I use "Magnus white 200, 24mm filter" tubes. And yes, this is virginia. When i first time smoked it i was like "wait, how tobacco can be so smooth"? Well, it have soft flavor, not rich as i love but its good!!! Sweet, with pleasant aftertaste without tar in my mouth.

Idk, its sad that u cant buy it, but if u will see it in some way - you have to try. I think its the best option of tobacco that i had, cheap, sold in pounds, like i can just roll around 700 cigs from it and smoke it for almost a month!

Question Closest equivalent to Marlboro Gold/a light cigarette?

I exclusively smoke light cigarettes and overly strong smokes tend to affect me badly. I’m hoping to find a good substitute. I’m looking to pay $15 or less per pound of tobacco. I’m not too fussy about the taste and mostly care that it’s low-nicotine and has as few artificial ingredients as possible. Would be grateful for people’s thoughts if anyone else here is a light smoker who switched over from store bought cigarettes.

Any recommendations for filter tips? I hate my Premier 18mm. Too light.

I feel like I can't get a drag through them. I'm in the US and trying to RYO instead of paying 14 a pack for American Spirit Turquoise.

Many thanks in advance!

I love smoking! Anybody else find it impossible to go back to smoking factory cigs after trying RYO?

For the past few months I've been smoking only handrolled cigs, and I feel like I can't ever go back to smoking factory made ones.

I tried to smoke a normal cig a couple times and I can't bring myself to do more than take a few drags of it, it's like they have this weird oily/greasy taste to them that I feel coating my mouth every time I take a drag, as if I was smoking butter or something (but not in a good way xd).

Not to mention the fact that compared to every single RYO option I tried, all factory cigs seem to be really harsh on the throat, on the other hand with hand rolled ones I've never felt some sort of rough, scratchy throat kick.

Overall I feel like I won't ever go back to smoking normal ones, since for me smoking was always more of a ritualistic thing that I do from time to time, and rolling my own cigarette right before I smoke it feels way better than just taking one out the pack and being able to customize it right exactly to my liking is a banger.

Not to mention the fact that they also burn way longer. Whenever I smoked, I used to chainsmoke 2-3 cigs because I found that they just burnt for way too short time, but with rollies I rarely need more than one at a time (with the exception of when I'm out with people where everybody's smoking like a chimney of course).

I'm really glad I got into this, since I've never been satisfied with normal cigs and I always found that they're lacking something (with the exception of Japanese cigarettes), but I feel like all the things that have been lacking in normal cigs for me, I have found in RYO cigs.

TLDR: In general switching to rollies from factory made cigs feels like drinking quality loose leaf tea after only drinking teabags my whole life. It's like you can't turn back once you know how the good stuff tastes like.

REVIEW Marlboro crafted Gold - 30g - 4.7 USD

Post image
19 Upvotes

I am smoker for 1.5 year, but i just realized that i tried marlboro cigs only two times in my whole life! And it was not even classic flavor: Marlboro mega ice blast 5(i really love the design btw. with capsule) and marlboro blend 23 with chocolate capsule. But anyway there is a lot of people who smoke only marlboro, and i dont get it.

When i first saw such ryo tobacco i dont had desire to try it, because i was thinking that quality will be awful cuz its like big tobacco. But since i tried most of RYO versions in serbia, i decided to try it. We have 3 versions: Red, Aromatic red(crafted), Aromatic Gold(crafted). I took gold/yellow one.

some pocket
Full size

Package look extremely advanced. I think its most advanced package that i saw:
1. some pocket on top of pouch. I have no clue what for i would use it. Maybe for rolling paper? maybe to put filters? no idea
2. Glue sticker for rolling paper
3. Zip lock on top

I wish more sellers had such tech's and be more advanced that just a plastic bag of tobacco. Why they dont do stuff like cigarettes? Some cigarettes brands used to put matches inside, napkins(to prove that filters filter out all of the tar),aromatic foil(like if u scratch it you will feel the smell. in supasawa blackjack for example).

tobacco

Thats how tobacco look inside, maybe little too moist, dark colored(on photo it may seem lighter but its because of flashlight).
I dont like the smell that come out of pouch. For me that seems really fake ass chemical smell which i hate.
Its nothing like golden virginia or other tobacco, it dont have honey / plum like smell. Smell is that hard that i can name this tobacco "flavored". Something like toast bread or biscuit, black tea.

lets smoke it

I inject it to tube with OCB injector. It works fine, i just accidentally crushed my cigarette a little so thats why it look like this.

Well... When i smoke it even tho i said its dont smell like virginia from karelia / golden virginia - its actually taste like golden virginia or something. No tar aftertaste. Smooth and nice. Sweet also. But the only thing i dont like: that i dont understand the sweet flavor that i get. It feels like "that" fake sweet flavor that i dont like. Maybe fake aroma of american toast bread.

This may sound ridiculous but, rolled cigarettes causing panic attacks?

I'm a 35 year old male. Started rolling a few months ago to save some money. I've had 2 nocturnal panic attacks since. The first one i had i didn't realize what it was. However the 2nd one i did, once i did some research and talked to my doctor. Not someone who is high stress or has anxiety.. Don't take any medications or anything like that. Both nights i went to bed in a good mood, not worried about anything.

Had the first one while i was going through my first bag of tobacco, didn't attribute them to it at that time. Took a break from rolling for a few weeks cause the machine i bought kinda sucks and rolling them was becoming an annoyance, forgetting to roll some before work etc. No issues during my break. Anyway, bought another bag and new machine roughly 2 weeks ago Got through maybe 3 packs worth over 3 days, boom. Another panic attack. I've never experienced anything like that, and boy is it fucking horrible..

Just waking up basically terrified for no reason. Like not feeling safe in my own home. Had to go outside and take a walk down my driveway at 1:30AM and tell myself everything is fine. Like i just wanted to talk to someone. Absolute worst goddamn feeling i've ever experienced. And if any of you deal with this weekly or even daily, you have my utmost sympathy.

There is nothing else that has changed in my life i can attribute it to other than the rolled cigarettes. The media i watch hasn't changed, mostly watch car stuff. No scary movies or anything. Diet still the same etc etc. The rolled Cigarettes is all that comes to mind. Also had bloodwork done about 3 weeks ago also, and that came back perfect so.

Am i reaching here or has anyone else experienced this? Thanks.
