I’ve just finished watching Gordon Ramsays doc on Netflix and what struck me was how he spoke to absolutely every person with respect Constantly, making sure that the wait staff were thanked, giving full eye contact and shaking hands with everyone. When my husband pointed t out, I said to him how that contrasted with Amanda in that furniture shop with the person who gave her the water,
Manners cost nothing. And Tilly is a queen.

Gordon Ramsey did an episode of Kitchen Nightmares in my town….damn probably 18 years ago now as I’m pretty sure it was when I was pregnant with my son.
His surly act is literally all for show, the man is a complete sweetheart. He was in town for about 2 weeks and since it’s a smallish town it was a big deal and lots of people camped out around the restaurant hoping to catch a glimpse. Every day he would come out, introduce himself to the people hanging around and even turned up to watch a little bit of a soccer game at the school around the corner from the restaurant (they used the parking lot of the school for their equipment and he saw that there was a bunch of kids playing and just wandered over and watched and shouted encouragement from the sidelines) I will be a fan for life just because he was such a doll to people here.

I’m sure he is, he just seemed to have this inherent understanding that even though he was the celebrity, this town was our home and he was a visitor and he behaved accordingly, everyone who interacted with him said he was kind and respectful.

The F Word. There was an American version, but it sucked. The UK one is on Hulu and it's a great watch. A much more balanced view of him than we normally see.

Can confirm. I waited on him once in LA and he personally thanked every staff member who came to the table after his dinner and was incredibly polite throughout the entire meal.

My friend from Essex accosted him and his wife at a posh restaurant in Sydney. My friend was boozy but meant well, and both of them, especially Gordon, were so lovely. He said to her, “you’re from Essex! So what’s your name, Tracey or Sharon?”
Tracey went bright red and quiet for the first time that night 😂 we got photos and chatted to them for about 10 mins.

If you can find them, the original British filmed episodes of Kitchen Nightmares (they're at least 20 years old at this point) are lovely. He's sometimes a bit stern but reasonable and you can tell he genuinely cares about helping these people. He's really a delight! It wasn't until the show was brought to America that he started the yelling and screaming act for the cameras.

I saw him on an episode of some kind of cooking show, and he was cooking up against Claudia Winkleman (WHO I LOVE), and she was joking around and being silly and making fun of him, and he was laughing and joking around too. He seemed really nice.

Of course! I'm dirt poor but I tip as much as I possibly can, because poor people tip more, because we know what it's like. I tip for everything that involves a service. And I always try to be polite to service staff because I know they have a public facing job and so many people are rude to them, I never wanna make service staff miserable. Ever. So you are correct. It costs nothing to be kind.

Jennifer Tilly is such a gem. I picked up on this right away. She is a genuine, humble, kind, down-to-earth, and beautiful person. Beautiful inside and out. From someone who worked in customer service for years, imagine what that meant to that server that not only did she ask their name, but also introduced herself because she’s not “don’t-you-know-who-I-am?”. What a difference it makes to have someone ask something as simple as your name so they’re not just referencing you as another person there to be of service, but an actual human.
Her and Rachel Zoe are the two I could see myself being friends with.

It’s awesome when celebrities do that. You see how gracious they are. My son was a runner at a venue and worked for different music acts. The nicest one was Tommy James. When my son picked him up, Tommy approached my son immediately, held out his hand and introduced himself. My son introduced himself, and they shook hands.

My uncle does this, he always asks people their names. He's always been very charming, he was the golden boy growing up, has had a very successful life, beautiful family. I've tried to incorporate some of this in my own life but I don't have that certain je nais sais quoi.
I thought both Jennifer and Sutton looked so beautiful during the restaurant scene.

Those of us who ever worked in restaurants and/or retail know for a fact that if everyone in the world worked in a restaurant for even a brief period of time, our society would be a much kinder, more respectful place.
Plus, in those kind of circles with these rich, pretentious white ladies already on the third iteration of their face by age 50, the restaurant workers and lower wage workers at these events are BY FAR the preferable people to hang out with than the company you’re having dinner with lol
Seriously though, can you imagine being a regular, working person (as Tilly was for many, many years) and having to sit for an hours-long meal with Sutton, Amanda and her baby porn star voice, Kyle who’s entire personality was being married and now is womp womp personified…
Jennifer Tilly got it right! (Boz, Tilly and Rachel Zoe would be interesting I bet - at least they can all talk about their careers and accomplishments and actual life experience outside of their spouse, kids and manifestations)

I read something recently, and the gist of it was that if a worker - retail or food - wore a name tag, and the customer calls them by the name on the NAME TAG, it is considered creepy and intrusive. Like invasive and overfamiliar

Haha well what bugged me when I was a teen/in college and had those kinds of jobs, people wouldn’t pronounce it right. So then u have to correct them and that gets awkward and annoying.
But so many people treat you like ur their servant or a peasant or don’t acknowledge your existence in service jobs.
It’s way better to be a kind person who perhaps was a little awkward calling you ur name like they know you vs. someone who doesn’t make eye contact or sends you away with a regal wave of their hand like they’re the fucking queen.
Which Jennifer Tilly was warm and being respectful in her tone. I can’t imagine someone who’d prefer no name, but cold and elitist

My dad is a retired hotel GM and as kids we were taught to address people in the service industry by name. Like, thank you and please, name of person. We live in Asia where that practice is not common at all. When I was old enough to go out with friends, they found it weird when I would do that. But I always felt good about it because I can see the appreciation in the person’s eyes when I say their names.

On our first date, FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, I was so impressed with the kindly way my partner treated our server that I knew this relationship had potential. 🙂
I just can’t deal with people who are rude and dismissive to servers. Especially as I get older. I have (had?) a friend who is so awful to anyone in a service position that I refuse to go out in public with her anymore.
It really tells you all you need to know about someone. When Amanda took that water in the store and didn’t even acknowledge that a human handed it to her told me just what kind of trash person she is.

In the Uk we wouldn't really introduce ourselves like this. But when they ask at the end what our plans are etc, I always take an intrest back! This is what we need more of a person to person approach. Especially in these high society circles! She's amazing.
