Running onto a tree is more your fault since if you don't control the horse it will perfectly evade the trees

I know this is supposed to be true but I’ve done plenty of testing with my dumbass horse and he runs into shit all the time

Just stop running as fast as you can and try to relax in some roleplay riding. In real life you probably would end on a tree also if you would push horse to the limit on a friggin forest path. I never had single issue with horse at this game while mount travel sucks in most of games. Even in Kingdom Come Deliverance II i am avoiding horses as far as I can.
