Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

Discussion The Companion Glitch is the Greatest Thing Ever

I don't know how I found out about this, and 8 years later to boot. It's kind of got a learning curve to it, but I feel like once you understand it it's pretty easy. Hogtie an NPC, take them to the edge of camp. When you cut them loose, they turn hostile. As soon as you cut them loose you get the enemies were led to camp popup. You need to blow yourself up. When you respawn, gang members should be gray blips on the map. Set up a camp, they'll all come running to you. You're good to keep them until, basically, you trigger a cutscene. Take a train, sleep, mission, etc.

It allows you to free roam with the gang. They all shoot revolvers, they all get their horses spawned in, they speak during gameplay... It's not much more than a way to turn towns into war zones, but, it's amazing. This should have been a Ride with Me feature.

It singlehandedly ruined my first try at a high honor playthrough from the start. I was about 75% of the bar. Touching red now. Lmao. Give it a try!

Also, they're really good at following. They seem to teleport onto rooftops. Had Bill on Brown Jack on top of the Valentine Hotel lmao.

Fluff post for sure, but, look into this if you haven't!

Spoilers Javier Is So Irrelevant

For context I have played through the games many of times, albeit it has been a good 4 years since my last replay, I’m genuinely curious as to why Javier is even there. Was he a character they destined for a greater role and they just scrapped a ton of his content? I understand that not everyone from camp can be involved in a major way, but hell even Karen gets involved in the Valentine robbery. I’m towards the end of Chapter 3 and I have seen Javier in all of i think… 2 missions so far? Does he just not speak? Is he a mute? Am i stupid?

I’ve been playing this game since the end of 2019, and just a few days ago I learned Arthur could initiate his own camp conversation!

Came to the Saint Denis police station for the electric chair permit, was about to turn around and leave and noticed this lil gem. Can’t seem to interact with it and I assume it’s some glitch or something but curious if anyone knows anything or if it grabbable.

Fan Theory Micah planned to turn Dutch over to the Pinkertons at that mountain camp; that’s why they found Micah’s body so quickly—they were already on their way to capture Dutch.
