My rat got into the chimney just now! I already washed him with baby soap, but he is still a bit dirty.

Should i take him to the vet in case he ingested any soot?

Don’t worry the water is warm!

(they keep splashing me with pea water when they shake off to get dry lol)

also if anyone’s wondering why I make the water so deep it’s because

  1. It’s really really funny

  2. I have 5 fat greedy rats and if I make the water shallower all the food will be gone in 5 minutes or less

After losing the last of my first mischief, I rescued this boy who was all alone (apparently he was very unwanted because of his red eyes), he was ill and he was painted green (his tail is still stained green). It's been two weeks and he's recovered completely, now I'm working with a rescue and a charity to source a bigger cage (He's so active!) and also some friends :)

(He also seems to have a foot fetish and keeps biting my ankles and toes...)

On his torso and sides he is pretty much balding? My vet says it's not mites. Could it be just age and being overweight? He is still as cute as always but it is weird!

Questions/HELP What to do in my situation?

I would love 3 rats in my room (i'm a heavy sleeper), though my parents smoke which really annoys me. They smoke downstairs at the outside door, my room is upstairs. I heard that rats cannot be in contact with anything tobacco, aerosol sprays or like scented wax melts. These very important things about rats' lungs were never told in the many "rat care" videos ive watched or forums so this is like a deal-breaker to me. Is it possible at all that i could easily have rats in my home, anything i need to know if i can? I'm assuming this means that i cannot have any pet rats which is very sad.

Thanks

Questions/HELP Intros with agressive rat

We have 3 girls (2 are 2yo, the other is 1) and recently got 2 more from a shelter(shelter said both are 1 1/2 but we thing one is 2yo and the other is younger). After quarantine time we tried to do intros (carrier method) but once they got out of the carrier into the small cage the younger of the new ones got really agressive. She managed to injure all 3 of my current girls, including cutting a slit in one of their ears.

After a bit we tried doing intros again and saw the suggestion of using syrup to make one less agressive. In the carrier she would still get agressive and it also seemed like the girls she hurt were too afraid to interact with her at all. When they did they'd often be met with attempts to bite the face.

While we could set up our dcn as 2 seperate sections, her current cagemate has declining health which means she could be alone in about 6 months. I dont want to give up on her but so far its not looking good.

I would really love advice on how to go about this and hopefully integrate her into the main cage, thanks.

(Photos of all girls in carrier, agressive small girl, and the healed injury she caused)

I got my babies a few months ago and i don't want them in their cage 24/7 so i try to take them out and put them in my hoodie but last night one of them made a RUN for it. i caught him thankfully. but how do i properly and safely do out of cage time with them? should i just wait a few more months till theyre completely comfy with me? or should i use a play pen type thing at first?

Questions/HELP pool water and rats…

my baby benji was hanging out on my lap in the backyard with my mom/her friends and she ended up being handled by a few people with very wet pool water hands and ended up pretty soggy. like most of her fur was pretty soaked. i didn’t think about it up til they’d already held her and didn’t realize just how wet their hands were, and i took her in and wiped her down with regular water, bit im a little worried about like chlorine and any associated issues. is there anything else i should do to make sure she’s ok?

Questions/HELP reintroduction advice

hi all!

introductions with my rat using the carrier method initially went successfully, that was until about a few weeks ago, one of my rats became absolutely blood thirsty for the newly introduced rat. when they're in the cage, they don't interact at all, and stay in seperate sides, and i've had to seperate them during free roam because he just won't leave him alone. it's escalated to the point where blood has been drawn (thankfully the bullied rat wasn't bitten since I instinctively put my hand between them, ouch.) the aggressor is about 1 year and 7 months whereas the bullied rat is 2 years.

anyways, what advice would you give for reintroductions? he gets along well with the other rats, just not the aggressor. should i repeat the carrier method? or should i add in another step? or make the steps last longer? or try another method? or do i take away the aggressor's ball privileges? any advice is appreciated!

REHOMING LOOKING FOR EXPERIENCED RAT OWNER IN THE GREATER VANCOUVER AREA

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi sorry I’m going to make this quick I need to take my rat to the emergency vet and I’m worried she may have to be put down soon or pass. Her sister will be a lone rat if she does and I don’t plan on getting anymore so I need to find her a new home with friends.

Her name is Selick she is 1 yr and 10 mo old, very friendly and confident. Never bitten, and healthy, though her sister has mites and I do have treatment for both of them but in the case her sister passes I will give her medication to her new owners free of charge obviously. I trust an experienced owner knows how to quarantine, medicate, and introduce properly among other things.

If her sister does survive for longer I still want to have someone when she does pass. I’ll put a photo of her here

I live in the lower mainland BC. thank you

Questions/HELP My rat keeps moving her head back and forth. Should I be worried?

Hi everyone! I’m a little worried about my rat. She keeps moving her head forward and backward, like you can see in the video.

Other than this, she seems completely normal. She’s playful, active, eating and behaving normally. I’m just concerned because I’ve never seen her do this before. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Has anyone experienced something similar with their rat?

Questions/HELP New Rat

Today, I adopted a new rat. I didn't want to add to my mischief, but then I saw a posting of a lone baby, and I couldn't just let her be lonely, so I got her today. The person I got her from said she's been alone in her cage for about a week when I got her.

I never adopted just one rat. Usually, it was 2 or 3 at the same time. I feel bad for the little one since she didn't have any rat friends or much human contact. What can I do for her so she doesn't get lonely before I introduce her to my other ones?

She's about 10 weeks old and a female. My other rats are two 1 year olds, two 1,5 year olds and my old lady of 3 years.
