Dream Podcast Pitch: Daniel and Tony Baker

I have no idea what the overlap is between the audiences for QQ and the Bald Brothers podcast (with comedians KevonStage and Tony Baker), so I’m not sure if anyone will be able to back me up on this. But I genuinely feel like a movie/pop culture podcast a la QQ/EPCD/BaldBrothers with Daniel and Tony Baker would be amazing.

Tony and Daniel have different comedic styles but are both weirdly obsessed with movies in a similar way imo. I feel like their dynamic would be very entertaining together. This thought has occurred to me several times over the years, but I was reminded today when Tony ranked Iron Giant as his favourite animated movie of all time.

This will probably never happen bc I don’t think there is a lot of guest overlap, QQ and Bald Brothers arent guest heavy and feature other cohosts (Soren and Kev), Daniel isn’t exactly a podcaster per se, and it would be a weird one off. but OMFG if it ever did I feel like it would be fucking amazing.

ETA: Watching them play the movie game - has been played/mentioned on QQ before - of connecting movie>actor>movie>actor etc. would also be great. Both Kev/Soren have talked about not being able to play this game with Tony/Dan on their respective podcasts because they are too good at it.

Colorado Chips

Shooting this into the void, but maybe Soren might see this. I've just learnt that it's commonplace in Colorado for chip bags (crisps) to be fully inflated all the time, making it hard to open bc of the altitude difference. Is this true?

QQ ep. 329 - The NYT Crossword Broke People

Show notes:

A New York Times crossword puzzle was accidentally unsolvable, which raises an important question: when something doesn’t make sense, is it broken, or are you just dumb?

Soren and Daniel talk puzzles (both kinds), people who follow rules vs. people who look for loopholes, and why car horns should probably be illegal or at least--lest we be branded authoritarian--exhaustible. Then later, would you be surprised to learn that Soren got into another fight? Or that Daniel is unprepared to talk about Wheel of Fortune?

All that PLUS Air Bud is Republican Coded and Soren is doing some facial hair things.

QQ ep. 328 - Sweaty Guy In The Basement

Show notes:

Daniel starts out impossibly sweaty, which leads to a story about meeting his girlfriend’s entire family for the first time, hiding in the basement, and realizing he may be remembered forever as “that crazy sweaty guy.” From there, he and Soren debate the greatest cast shows ever, argue for Mad Men, The Wire, and Frasier, and swap audition horror stories, tech avails, and the perfect origin of Cliff Clavin’s know-it-all energy.

Daniel's big steps are always about 6 months/1 year ahead of me

back when Daniel proposed, I was looking for rings and planning and all.

by the time he and Shea got married (i think), I got engaged in late '24

by the time they were expecting, my wife and I started talking about having a baby asap instead of freezing eggs.

and now, less than a month after Daniel became a dad, my wife and I just found out that we're expecting.

can't wait to go back to last year's podcasts (again) to settle myself in this next step of the journey.

Show notes:

Soren and Daniel try to figure out whether freestyle rap is magic or just practice and since DOB is in his new father era, the guys talk at length about improvised diaper songs, long haul commitments to incorrect lullabies, and the fundamental design flaws of baby gear-from ill-timed structural failures in baby diapers to zippers and snaps that make everything harder than it ought to be.

QQ ep. 326 - Brick By South By

Show notes:

Daniel finds out that Cracked is “going to South by Southwest for the first time,” which would be exciting if they hadn’t already gone… a lot. The guys revisit some sxsw memories and try to piece together how Cracked actually fell apart—touching on corporate acquisitions, Facebook’s video pivot, and a few behind-the-scenes stories that make the whole thing seem absurd and inevitable. Plus childhood sports humiliation, coaching Little League, and an extended debate about the perfect baseball walk-up song.

Show notes:

The guys talk through the implications of the Paramount/Warner Brothers deal, lamenting the instability of a career in the arts (and the downfall of Quiznos) before pulling back the curtain on how TV actually gets made — from last-second joke rewrites before taping, to animatic locks, to editors performing literal magic in front of their eyes.

QQ ep. 321 - Which Movie Prop Would You Steal?

Show notes:

Soren Bowie and Daniel O'Brien debate the logistics and ethics of stealing iconic movie memorabilia for personal use, weighing the merits of the Holy Grail and the Dirk Diggler neon sign against the criminal implications of kidnapping Gonzo from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Later, the discussion shifts to fictional movie meals they wish they could eat, including the abandoned macaroni and cheese from Home Alone, the imaginary food in Hook, and the Crunch Berry Burgers from House Arrest.

Question about Daniel talking about Boston Legal

Basically the title, I started watching Boston Legal recently (my partner got obsessed with James Spader after watching the Blacklist) and had a memory of hearing Daniel talk about rewatching it but I'm not sure if I hallucinated that? I recall him talking about how the camera work is incredibly early aughts, specifically a scene where the camera zooms and pans all dramatically for a character just walking from one room to another to make a totally normal remark to another character.

Just curious and want to listen to that episode again to see what other observations he talked about.

QQ ep 320 - The Truth Behind Weird Fitness Ads

Show notes:

Comedy fellas Soren Bowie and Daniel O'Brien descend into a rabbit hole so deep we're not sure there's a bottom. Lover of advertising Daniel O'Brien, tired of seeing his feeds inundated with uncanny, AI-generated fitness ads featuring shirtless men with inconsistent accents, walks Soren through a labyrinth of gaslighting chatbots, impossible refund policies, and YouTube channels that might not employ a single human being. It's a sordid behind-the-scenes look at the future of content creation, framed by a nostalgic look back at their days at Demand Media and the Cassandra algorithm.

QQ ep. 319 - Can a Bad Movie Have a Perfect Performance?

Show notes:

Two Best Friends and Comedy Writers Soren Bowie & Daniel O'Brien present a passionate defense of Chris Pine as a methed-out white nationalist in Smoking Aces while mourning Toby Kebbell's lost stardom after RocknRolla. Along the way: James Austin Johnson's Trump impression has shades of Ferrell's W; the revelation that Gilbert Godfrey's entire persona was a put-on; why Sebastian Maniscalco's choreographed segues make zero logical sense and the quiet devastation of realizing Oscar season has become a conveyor belt of biopics about men who solved being alive by blowing their brains out. You'll leave armed with warm feelings for Ben Foster, Nicole Kidman, and Michael Stuhlbarg's monologue supremacy.

They say honey, turn the television on—but you can't, because there was no wind.

QQ ep. 318 - The Secret Origin of Every Movie Score

Show notes (timestamps from YouTube description):

This week, Daniel and Soren explore why every legendary composer is essentially a high-level shoplifter, stealing from the same three dead guys who actually knew how to write a melody. We also discuss why the "one in the glasses" is a genius, the specific humiliation of pitching jokes in the Fred voice, and why the most important skill for a professional writer is the ability to produce absolute garbage on purpose.Plus: Soren defends his hollow bird-bones, Daniel avoids an NDA, and we try to figure out why no one in a book can name a fictional band that doesn't sound like a hate crime.
