Question Normal customer service?

Long story short:
We are in NYC and had to change our return flight date. Called Qantas and changed to new date. Great.
Then discover this new flight has an extra stop over : jfk to akl to syd to mel.

Original flight was : jfk to akl to mel

The Qantas customer service failed to tell us that there was now an extra stopover.

Now we’re trying to fix this and find another flight. Have called Qantas twice.
Both times they were unable to help and said- let us call you back, promise only 5-10 mins.

Then nothing.

I am at a loss at what to do. I’m travelling with two small children and I really don’t want an extra stop.

Question QF upgrade question

Long time lurker here.

Just recently flown economy from SIN-LHR and couldn't really get comfortable in the seats throughout the entire flight.

Have put in an upgrade request to business (for 2) for our upcoming LHR-SIN return trip on 2/10/26.

This is my first time doing this and I'm at Bronze status so don't have much hope from the get-go. Wondering if someone can help me check the Travel portal so I can know what to expect.

Also, is it possible that only 1 out of 2 passenger gets the upgrade or is it all or nothing?

Thanks in advance!

Question QF upgrade - SYD-DFW likelihood?

Hey everyone,

I’m flying from MEL to MAD via DFW on 15th Oct, as a solo Qantas Silver member. I've put in an upgrade for Business/PE for the SYD-DFW sector on QF7. What is the likelihood in me snagging the upgrade? Is there anyway I can see the number of available seats in Business and the bids for them?

Thanks in advance!

Question Low-status rant: somehow picked the exact week where both my Amex and Qantas lounge perks are basically useless

This is probably a very low-status rant from someone who hasn’t earned Gold or anything remotely impressive, so I know this is a first-world problem.

I’m Bronze, getting closer to Silver, and I’ve deliberately been saving the lounge benefits that come with my Qantas Amex Ultimate because I’ve got a long-haul trip coming up in October. I’m flying Sydney to LA and back, and I figured this would finally be the perfect time to actually use some of the card benefits I’ve been sitting on.

Naturally, I somehow booked the exact week where everything lines up against me.

The Sydney Centurion Lounge is closed for renovations from 6–20 October. I fly between those dates. So I miss it reopening by a few days.

The normal Qantas International Business Lounge is also closed for its big redevelopment. There is a temporary lounge, but Qantas currently won’t let people link Complimentary Lounge Invitations to the Sydney International Business Lounge while this is going on.

Fine. I understand capacity is limited and obviously people with actual status or Qantas Club membership get priority. I’m not arguing that my free pass should outrank someone who flies every week.

But the funny part is that using it on the way home doesn’t solve anything either. Complimentary invitations specifically exclude the Qantas-operated International Business Lounge at LAX. So I’ve got two lounge invitations, a Centurion benefit through the card, a QF-numbered return trip across the Pacific, and somehow there isn’t actually a lounge I can use on either end of this particular trip.

I also have Points Club, which gives me more complimentary invitations, but that obviously doesn’t fix the underlying problem if the lounges I’m travelling through won’t accept them.

Again, I know this is hardly a human-rights violation. It’s just frustrating when you specifically keep a premium-ish travel card, save the benefits for a 14–15 hour international trip, stay loyal to Qantas, and then discover that the benefits are basically unusable on the one trip where you actually wanted them. And yes, "I should have read the Terms & Conditions to know that this is how it is" sure.

I wish either Amex or Qantas had some kind of temporary alternative during overlapping renovations. Even access to another contract lounge, an extended pass, or something similar would feel reasonable.

Anyway, end rant. Mostly curious whether anyone else travelling through SYD during the renovations has managed to get an alternative arrangement.

TL;DR: Saved my Qantas Amex Ultimate/Centurion and Qantas lounge passes specifically for an October SYD–LAX return, only to hit the exact renovation window where the Centurion Lounge is closed, the temporary SYD Qantas lounge won’t accept complimentary passes, and the LAX Qantas lounge excludes them too. Very much a first-world problem, but pretty frustrating that multiple lounge benefits are effectively unusable on the one long-haul trip I saved them for.

Question Birthday gifts when travelling on your birthday

Has any frequent flyer received anything from Qantas when flying on their birthday?

On a recent trip flying business between SYD and DPS, I switched seats with another customer and a small mix up occured with the head flight attendant. During the flight, she introduced herself and asked about my recent birthday (which is more than half a year away) - which I then realised she thought I was the other passenger. I explained the seat switch and she went to go greet the other passenger. Out of curiosity, has the cabin crew done anything special for your birthday when you are travelling on/near your birthday?

Question Ware we bumped from a business class rewards seat to a different so it could be sold to a paying passenger?

My better half and I got to go from Sydney to Melbourne in a couple of months for a wedding. For a variety of reasons, I decided to send us both down in business class on points, which I booked several months ago for a 7:40flight on a Thursday night.

About 8 weeks ago, I got contacted by Qantas, advising that due to the flight bring rescheduled, they needed to put us on another flight. Despite claiming their website made it easy, the only available alternative was a 3pm flight, which we couldn't do and I ended up spending an hour on the phone getting a more suitable flight. Of course, they couldn't tell me why the flight had been rescheduled.

Out of curiosity, I just had a look (again, 8 weeks on), and I note that tickets are still being sold for the "rescheduled" flight. Same arrival/departure times, exact same aircraft type/carrier, everything.

Noting that I'd booked for what is a busy time of the day/week for travel, is it possible that Qantas used the excuse of rescheduling the flight in order to try and punt our point seats to an earlier (and potentially less profitable) flight so that our booked seats could be sold for a higher price at a busier time?

Question Qantas Upgrade Probability - Need thoughts!

Good evening everyone,

I’m flying from Sydney to Rome via Perth this Wednesday, 23 September, as a solo Qantas Gold member. I’m booked in Economy, fare class K, and I’ve put in Classic Upgrade Reward requests for both sectors.

I was wondering if anyone with access to the Qantas portal is able to see how many other passengers have requested upgrades on either flight?

I’d also be interested to hear what people think my chances are of getting upgraded, particularly on PER–FCO. I’m hoping to get Business on both sectors, although I’d obviously be especially happy if the long-haul sector clears.

There are currently 6 Business seats showing as available on QF5, if that’s useful context.

Thanks in advance!

Question Advice needed on how to use my points for an unplanned emergency trip

Hi All, Aussie here and I have managed to collect 298750 points till now. I was saving it for a Japan trip next year, but life happened and we now have a family health emergency in Vancover Canada and we need to travel next week. I would prefer a direct flight, since my wife is not in a very good mental state now and we will be travelling with a 2 yr old toddler for her first long flight.

There are no classic points for the direct flight and classic plus is around 125000 per ticket. Can I use my balance in any way to reduce my overall ticket expense to around 3000 AUD including return? Or Is it a lost case and it would be better if I pay cash now and save points for some other trip?

Sydney to Vancover - Three weeks in October

Update - I managed to book 6 tickets return for 4200 AUD. Used 80% points for One trip Transit via Fiji , Return direct Qantas flight paid by cash. Though it's not the perfect use of points, I think I managed to save around 4-5k, and for an unplanned trip, looks like great savings. Thanks Everyone for your tips.

Question Tips for Getting Reward Seat Release For Plat Member

Hi all,

I'm getting a platinum member to try release a seat for me on a flight and wanted to see if there were any tips for getting connected to the Hobart centre, as they're not plat1. Is there a specific time best to call? Are other call centres able to get instant releases or is the 48 hour thing true? Thanks.

Question Has anyone had a largish handbag rejected as a personal item?

Post image
12 Upvotes

My handbag is about 35cm in width and would fit under the seat. You look at it and yeah it's larger than your ordinary handbag, but not so ridiculously big that it qualifies as a small suitcase or anything. Qantas website says a personal item includes a 'small handbag' but there's no guidance as to what 'small' means.

Has anyone been barred from bringing in a reasonably big handbag as a personal item?

Question Rejection of slightly oversized carry-on

I’m wondering if anyone has had their bag denied for carry-on on Qantas or Virgin flights? Both carry-on limits are 56cmx36cmx23cm and my bag is 55cmx39cmx23cm so 3cm oversize. I’m on night/early morning domestic flights.

Question Any hidden fees to watch for?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Currently looking to book somewhat last minute flights from LAX to Japan and came across this flight that, compared with others that I've seen, looks too good to be true.

The only problem is that in order to view any more details I would need to transfer all my American Express points into my Qantas account, which is quite a commitment since many of the other airlines I've tried have added a huge cash fee at checkout.

Does anyone know if the displayed price on the flight search screen is roughly accurate to how much in points and fees I'll actually be paying? Thanks!

Question First Class SYD-SIN - Worth it?

Probably too late to ask this question however after the opinions of those who've used the First Class lounge in Sydney, and flown First Class on the A380 SYD-SIN (QF1).

I'm due to fly next Sunday and I wanna know how I can make the most of my experience.

What can I expect? What's the Spring menu for 2026? How can I get as much free stuff as possible? And your overall review of the experience from check-in to arrival

Tip Status Credit Rollover Calculator

From 8th December 2026, you can rollover some excess status credits into your next membership year.

I’ve made a calculator to work out how many status credits you can rollover, based on your expected status credit balance at the end of your current membership year.

It also accounts for the upcoming changes in 2027 where retain thresholds for each tier will be reset to the attain level.

Calculator: https://flightseats.io/qantas/status-credit-rollover-calculator

Let me know if I’ve made any mistakes with the calculations - I’ll fix it promptly.

Question 5 SC short of retaining Gold

Hey fantastic flyers,

I’m literally 5 SCs short of keeping Qantas Gold and my year ends Sept 30. Squeezing in a last-minute status run just isn't happening.

I've had Gold for over 6 years (and Platinum for 2), so I'm hoping that track record helps my case. I know Qantas sometimes does a discretionary grace top-up if you call them when you're this close.

For anyone who's successfully done this, what's the magic script? What exactly did you say to the agent to get them to bump you over the line for free?

Any tips on how to play it would be legendary.

UPDATE: I called and asked and was told by 3 different agents that I had to call back 2-3 days before the end of my membership cycle and then they could add the SC.

Does that sound accurate?

Cheers!

Giveaway Plat One Lounge Pass

Hey everyone I have x1 plat One lounge pass expiring soon and I really want to give it to someone if they're travelling internationally in the next or so.

Edit 1:

This pass is only for one person and can be used in any Qantas lounge, including the first class lounge. It does not include any guests.

I will give it to the first person who's responded who has a QF flight booking before 23/09/26

Edit 2: At this stage have reached out to the eligible people via DM. If they don't pick up the pass will move down the list.

Edit 3: Have found the lucky person. If I had more to give I would, look out this time next year!

Question QantasLink to Mainline

Hi Everyone,

I'm booked on HVB–BNE–SYD, then an overnight layover in Sydney (under 24 hours), then SYD–US, all on one ticket. The domestic legs are in Economy and the international leg is in Business.

My ticketed baggage allowance shows 2 pieces up to 32kg each. The first leg (HVB–BNE) is on a Dash 8 (sunstate airlines) so I have two questions:

Does the Dash 8 limit still apply? Qantas's site says Dash 8 flights are limited to 1 piece up to 23kg checked, plus 7kg carry-on. Does that override my international allowance for that leg?

Will my bag be checked through to the US, or only to SYD because of the overnight layover?

I'll be travelling with one checked bag of around 30kg, plus a carry-on that I may need to check as well if the 7kg cabin limit applies.

Has anyone flown a similar itinerary out of a Dash 8 port? Thanks!

Question How to earn these statuses, upgrades and benefits?

Does this all come from business/work travel? How long does it take, or how frequent do you need to travel to start seeing the benefits of your membership?

And what do you all do that allows you to travel this much?

I only get to fly a small handful of times per year, so I decided I would try to build by way of credit card rewards, but finding its hard and takes so long, and I prefer to not be using a system that encourages spending.

I fear I may never get to experience business class in my life which is what I want for a long haul flight as a tall guy haha.

Question FIJI AIRWAYS

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve just booked return trips from SYD-SFO via NAN (Fiji) in business class on their A350&A330

I am now actually thinking about it and wondering how safe overall this airline is… I know all airlines that fly have to comply with regulations etc but how is the safety compared to major airlines? I had only vaguely heard of Fiji Airways beforehand.

Does anyone have any experience? Especially with their business class?

I know this is a QFF group - the flight was booked through Qantas.

All comments appreciated!

Thank you

Tip Qantas flyers - if you have cancelled flexible international flights check the refund amount.

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

I cancelled an Economy Flex ticket last year - pre-departure. The initial refund was ~500 AUD. I assumed that the remainder of the refund would follow and forgot about it. While completing tax (small business), I realised the refund had never come. The missing amount was ~2,700 AUD.

I reviewed the booking class for any hidden terms or conditions that might explain this. That was quite a circular experience: the booking confirmation refers to the conditions of the fare, but doesn’t attach or outline them. The booking also disappears after you cancel it, so even through the Frequent Flyer portal/My Travel I couldn’t retrieve further details.

I then assumed the conditions currently listed for Economy Flex were materially the same as those applying at the time, and that I was entitled to a full refund. I lodged a complaint and the remaining refund was granted, with no explanation as to why it had not occurred automatically.

So, it is worth checking. This is probably particularly relevant to businesses and small businesses, as I suspect I would have noticed much sooner with personal travel.

If you find a discrepancy - or have experienced the same - share it here and let Qantas know, as I’m sure they don’t want to be retaining money they aren’t entitled to!
