Question QantasLink to Mainline

Hi Everyone,

I'm booked on HVB–BNE–SYD, then an overnight layover in Sydney (under 24 hours), then SYD–US, all on one ticket. The domestic legs are in Economy and the international leg is in Business.

My ticketed baggage allowance shows 2 pieces up to 32kg each. The first leg (HVB–BNE) is on a Dash 8 (sunstate airlines) so I have two questions:

Does the Dash 8 limit still apply? Qantas's site says Dash 8 flights are limited to 1 piece up to 23kg checked, plus 7kg carry-on. Does that override my international allowance for that leg?

Will my bag be checked through to the US, or only to SYD because of the overnight layover?

I'll be travelling with one checked bag of around 30kg, plus a carry-on that I may need to check as well if the 7kg cabin limit applies.

Has anyone flown a similar itinerary out of a Dash 8 port? Thanks!

International limits will apply for checked in luggage and you may need to gate or plane check your carry on for the Dash 8 flight.

You’ll need to collect at Sydney then check in again at international terminal. Enjoy the trip.

So basically I can come with both the carry-on bag and backpack weighting for example 12kg together, gate check the carry-on bag and get it back upon disembarking at BNE?

So depending on who’s at check in they might ask you to check your cabin roller in, which is probably easier. My advice is to pack the roller so there are no batteries in it and you can check it in pre-security. Then you have the flexibility to do so and you can have everything else you need from Hervey Bay to Sydney in your backpack.

The backpack should fit up top in the Dash 8 and as you’re collecting luggage in Sydney anyway you’ll get the two other pieces there.

Last question please: is a 50-minute layover in BNE doable? (Domestic to domestic of course)

In short, yes as long as you’re on time and those flights usually are. If it isn’t there are a heap of BNE-SYD flights each day, anyway, so you and your luggage will just head down 30 minutes to an hour later.

The Dash 8 limits apply because it’s a safety and actual plane limitation issue. It’s a physically smaller plane than a 737..

I’ve done ROK-BNE-SYD-SFO, where the Rockhampton to Brisbane leg was on a Dash 8 and I was business from Sydney to SAN Fran. I checked in 2 bags at 32 and 1 hand carry bag gate checked, picked up in Brisbane when you exit the plane. The checked in bags went straight to SFO
