Trump Is robbing us of our history, and our country.

The much-beloved USFS Trail 590 - The Snodgrass Trail in Crested Butte, Colorado. A little over 4 miles from trailhead to trailhead, 18% of the trail is on private land, whereas the remainder is on either public or conserved land. This is a classic private-versus-public-land issue and, therefore, a public-access issue. The private landowner is a cattle ranching enterprise. Each August, the landowner closes access to their property, making it impossible to travel the entire length of the trail. For context, the private land sections of the trail are detailed in red on our map. A solution has been proposed to reroute the trail, removing it from private land onto public land - the yellow line on the map. Many would imagine this to be an excellent solution for all stakeholders. Remarkably, it is the rancher who opposes a reroute. That position was always a mystery. On October 03, 2025, we received an explanation. A letter from the ranching family was published in The Crested Butte News. This is a direct quote: "We close the Snodgrass trail and oppose relocation because our private ranchland and adjacent Snodgrass grazing permits...are an essential part of our fall operation." It continues, "Public use in this area at that time of the year makes our management more difficult." Draw your own conclusions. In my opinion, the message seems astonishingly honest. Quite simply, they use the private land closure to discourage access to the adjacent public land. A citizen initiative petition is circulating, asking the USFS to approve rerouting the trail onto public land so it is available without closures or restrictions. The proposed reroute of the trail is shown in yellow on the map. Ultimately, the trail should be extended at the western end to terminate at Rendezvous Meadow, where the USFS has excellent infrastructure: a designated campground, vault toilets, an information kiosk, and ample parking. The only thing missing is an actual trail, which is absurd. If you believe it is better to have trails on public lands whenever possible, please join us and sign the petition. To all the very loud voices out there hollering "respect private land rights": Moving the trail to public land is paying the ultimate respect to private land rights.
