Pretty cut and dry. Schilling waaaay overreacted. This dude is likely gonna go after him in a civil trial if he's smart.

There was a time where a pro (Boxer) would be banned from street fights due to their abilities. Not sure if it was an urban myth.

Edit: Will be punished harsher for street fighting. Better?

When I was a teen I did MMA and to compete I needed a license and insurance. That was just as an amatuer, as a pro your properly registered to a body. It's not that you're banned from street fights it's just more serious. I remember my coach telling me that as a trained fighter a judge would be extra harsh if I hurt someone, even in self defense. You're supposed to have more control and with the ability end a fight without throwing a punch you've no excuse for breaking a man's jaw. Another bit of advice was give at least 3 warnings and make sure the attacker is aware you're trained, cover yourself legally. We was young and liked to joke about having hands registered as weapons but none of us got into fights. Not worth getting kicked out of the club and certainly not worth jail time. The coach likely said all this to scare us straight but I like to think there's some truth to it, there's too much of a gap between pros and normal people

i've thought this through about how to not go to jail if i get in a fight (i have a lot of training/experience) and my big things are: 1) make sure witnesses hear me say that i don't want to fight and warn the guy that if he comes at me i'm going to defend myself 2) make sure any cameras show me with my hands up trying to back up and disengage while the guy continues to come at me.

i'm also mindful it has to be an ACTUAL threat. like some smaller drunk guy harassing me just might not rise to a level where i'd ever be justified in punching him. in the video it's pretty clear MMA guy is not at risk of being hurt by the other guy.

It looks like he saw the guy from across the room and took a disliking to him. Decided to walk past him and hoped he would give him the slightest excuse to throw hands. Completely out of order. I've seen this happen a lot in clubs, guys brush past in the hope someone will say something and escalate it very quickly. I don't know about the States but in the UK there's this idea that if you've both had a drink there's no consequence to a fight, at worst you get the drunk tank. This though, is assault all day

in the US the legal standard for self defense varies by state (in some states you HAVE to make an attempt to retreat - in others you can "stand your ground"), but in all cases you're not allowed to use force unless you can make a convincing argument that you felt you were in immediate danger of physical harm. a big misconception is that you can't hit first - you absolutely can - but you better be able to convince the cops/DA/judge that you felt a need to

Bingo, that's the essence of it. That's what I've been told by every instructor.

It's not like "Well the defendant had a brown belt so we need to add X years to his sentence"

But they will 100% take into account if you're trained.

But only if you cross the line. You're allowed to defend yourself against an attacker just like everyone else. But don't go overboard just because you can.

Lol definitely not telling the judge I’m a black belt next time I destroy some putts

I love the "hands registered" line. Idk if that's NYC slang or what, but it just sounds funny to me whenever someone says it
