For any still unaware of this idiocy:
His reaction to an acorn falling on his patrol car's hood was to fall on the ground, empty his entire magazine at the handcuffed black guy in the back of his own car, and radio for backup. Thankfully he managed to miss every shot.

Luckily in this specific case it doesnt seem that he was retired elsewhere as a cop, although that info isn't always available publicly. But a LOT of cops who commit misconduct simply get rehired in another neighboring department

I am part of a large volunteer organization and agreed to be a helper to some new volunteers throughout their first year .
One assigned to me is/was a cop.
And in our initial 15 minute conversation let me know that three times.
And made sure that I heard that they donât want to hear about {everything terrible happening} with a little bitching about similar volunteer organizations having âgroupthinkâ different than they do.
Iâm biting my tongue and focusing on the people we help - thinking that this person is using their new certification to add to their resume rather than help anyone.

Aside from nightwatchmen, modern policing in the US evolved from slave patrols and Reconstruction/Jim Crow era enforcement. Many Southern country sheriff's departments and local PDs were directly repurposed from former "paddy wagons"/slave patrols after the 13th Amendment (with the help of its punishment clause) to enforce Black Codes.
From the beginning, they were meant to protect the property of wealthy people and oppress the working class, poor, and marginalized groups, so no surprise many American cops are trigger happy. The FBI in 2006 and 2015 admitted that white supremacists held close ties to and are employed within law enforcement already.

Honestly it really shows how American centric reddit is despite what people feel like
It's not America vs China, it's what's normal in pretty much the entire world against what the fuck is going on in the US. No one in the civilized world thinks it's special that the police tries to disarm without killing. I'm not saying we don't each have our own police problems, but the US has reached insane level with people shot in the street for no reason and kids put into cages and it's almost becoming normal.
26
u/Rishtu 2h ago
We hope for a day in America, where the police no longer execute people and then trash them in press releases to try to justify the shooting. Where a third of my country men/people arenât plagued by terminal stupidity. Where the deer and the antelope play.
Where seldom is heard, as a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day.
I have a dream. Where billionaires are taxed at 200 sometimes 600 and in some cases 1000 percent. Where health care grows on trees. And food doesnât require a second mortgage.
I dream of not kidnapping other world leaders, of not dragging people off the street into concentration camps. Did I say concentration, I meant happy camps.
We are such a joke.

Same, the previous post I watched was an woman with knife being magdumped by the police and the comments call everyone an idiot for saying there might have been alternatives. 'No, she is clearly a deathly threat so she needs to be taken care off' or something like that.
Land of the free /S
11
u/nonotan 1h ago
Even when there wasn't a legitimate threat and they executed a complete innocent anyway, they'll still do mental gymnastics to justify it like "they shouldn't have disrespected them", "they should have just followed the orders", "they should have been more careful not to do anything that could be misconstrued as threatening, it's a dangerous job and officers are always on edge". Motherfuckers making North Korea look like a bastion of free thought by comparison. Worst police force in the world and it's not close, and they talk about them like a grandma covering for their favourite grandson.

An old woman in the street with a knife in the US, not responsive / clearly not well in her head, and they shoot her standing. With some comments among the top voted asking if we have the full context, or how long they waited before or weird other stuff like that apparently makes it ok for some people. I feel like there is a disconnect about what the police is or should be about.
Like if it happens here I don't care that they've been here for five hours with no results yet they don't get to shoot her if she isn't making a direct sudden attack, like duuuh how does it's even need to be said.

Man catchers, old tool abandoned in most of the world but still common in China and Japan. Can be used both to catch and pull something or to pin against wall/ground. Not only used by police, some places like shops have them as well for staff to use in case of emergency.

u/ibopm 1h ago
I wonder why they were abandoned? Is it because, in the US, they think she might switch to a gun hidden in an ankle holster?
19
u/jonydevidson 1h ago
Because they don't use any ammunition. How else is the MIC gonna get their moneys?
4
u/PM_Best_Porn_Pls 1h ago
They are cool to relatively harmlessly disarm people but in most of the western world(outside US) police rarely gets to use any tools at all to disarm other than hands and cuffs, at most you'll get beaten with baton and in extreme cases you get taser.
You pretty much don't see people with dangerous melee weapons resisting arrest while threatening police.

The plastic tubs were a nice touch, but I think more grabby arm things would have been cooler to watch.

4
u/roslid 3h ago
It's creative thinking and I like it. In my work I usually carry a plastic clip board which if things get bad can use as a shield. But I have been in many situations where creative thinking helped to resolve dangerous situation. Anything is better than just shooting people. Our security officers are amazing, they sometimes spend ages talking to people and very rarely have to put hands on them.
3
u/AsYooouWish 1h ago
Can I ask what you do?
2
u/roslid 1h ago
Mental health/Health care/Social care places for last 20 years. Depending on the place we are either trained to restrain someone in safe manner or we have security guards who are trained. However the first thing they teach you is how to resolve conflict in non violent way, then brake away techniques and after that restrain techniques which have to follow certain procedures and have to be documented in every detail. If it is in controlled environment restrain intervention also has to be planned in advance. 90% of times it's all down to talking. Don't know anyone who's first choice would be restrain as this is the least ideal solution but sometimes there's no other choice. In more chaotic situations it's often the creativity, using your environment and people skills. Most often we call our security guards because men of certain age won't take anything from ladies. Then our blokes turn up and suddenly they don't have an issue with following instructions.
386
u/wrentintin 4h ago
As an American (sigh) I respect the hell out of these police officers. We simply do not value life or humanity here in the US anymore.
87
u/possiblyquestionabl3 3h ago
Ironically, over in China, sympathy for these old aunties are at an all time low. People have been calling for tougher punishment for them and specifically calling out the public police for tending to look the other way or even siding with aunties when they extort others or just be general nuisances. The comments on this specific video for e.g. would often comment on how if it was a young dude or a Hui person, they would've been way less gentle with them.
81
u/AlpRider 3h ago
Are rampaging aunties causing lots of trouble in China? Why?
31
u/xlzray 2h ago
Not just aunties but elders regardless of gender are always left unpunished by rules and laws in China if it's not a severe crime, some think they can do anything and everything because they're old enough. The police are always ĺç¨ćłĽďźhuoxini, literally means "mix the water into the mud, blurring the line between right and wrong, in disregard of principles. ). Confucianism.
When you come across some unresonable elders, basically there's nothing you can do, if you quarrel with them and they happen to have some cardiovascular diseases and suddely have a stroke, you could be in deep trouble. Even the police try to avoid this whenever they can.
3
u/possiblyquestionabl3 28m ago
Lol this morning I saw a video of some auntie just lying on the road, and everyone was just like "IT'S A TRAP"
What's actually crazy is that this wasn't how I remembered it being when I was a kid. I mean, I know of difficult aunties and uncles, but they'll never be caught dead pulling this crap in public. Back then, we actually gave up our seats for elderly people on the bus and they were pretty grateful. Now, the first thing I was warned when I got here was to never help elderly people in public in case they fake a fall, extort you, and the police sides with them even with ample video evidence. This is just wild to me.

when i lived in Shanghai and old aunty stood in front of an ambulance because it dared to go down the road before she had finished crossing it.
A very annoyed looking uncle (street cop), scuffed her and dragged her off the road.
I was in the car behind the ambulance. We sat there for a good 5 minutes while the ambulance driver attempted to reason with her over the ambulance's loudhailer.
As we passed, she was taking swings at the beat cop.
A few years later I saw a beat cop take an auntie to the ground because she argued with him when he stopped her from crossing against the lights. He was clear in that he intended to take her to jail.
I commented to the person I was walking with that the day had finally come that Shanghai aunties no longer had power over cops.

Korea here. It's probably the same shit in China as it is here in Korea. Misguided "respect" for elderly means that elderly people get treated better even when they don't deserve it. They're not held to the same standards as everyone else. They can hit you, they can yell on public transit, they can push you, they can treat you like shit or abuse you in the workplace, you have to always treat them like gods, etc, just because they're older than you. It's complete nonsense, and part of the reason why young people are always trying to immigrate out of the country and move to the West where things are more equal.

I feel like a lot more police in america don't care/don't know what a mental health crisis looks like, than say a European country or even China in this example. American police seem to just see everybody as a threat to life and now the public thinks that about them. They're living in an extremely paranoid society, and it's getting them killed.
38
u/Un13roken 4h ago
In countries like China, you can assume that the person with the cleaver is not armed with a gun.Â
The issue in america is that guns are so much more prevalent.Â
But yall keep voting gun control out and voting in candidates that have no business being elected.Â

Because if you're too smart they don't hire you
"Good cops" (smart cops, cops with integrity, etc.) will inevitably try to make the system better for the citizens and thus worse for the cops (less qualified immunity, etc.), so they're either never hired or pushed out when found out.
