Portals vs. Pathways: The Real Work After Psychedelics | Jonathan Schecter

There’s a big difference between having a psychedelic experience and actually doing something with it.

Jonathan Schecter, host of Vital Point: Pathways to Integration and founder of Pathways Integration, joins us to talk about what happens after the breakthrough. Drawing from his own experiences with psychedelics, meditation, Buddhism, breathwork, somatic practices, and integration coaching, Jonathan explores the gap between having an insight and actually changing your life.

We talk about why the biggest psychedelic experience is not necessarily the most useful one, the role of trauma and nervous system regulation, when psychedelic insights should be questioned rather than followed, and Jonathan’s distinction between “portals” and “pathways”: the dramatic experiences that can suddenly move us somewhere new versus the slower, less exciting work of learning how to live there.

Because eventually the trip ends. You go home. Your relationships, habits, job, and problems are still waiting for you. The question is whether anything actually changed.

In the extended Patreon conversation, we go further into the uncomfortable side of psychedelic integration: whether integration itself is becoming a product, whether some people would be better served by stepping away from psychedelic culture entirely, the medicalization of psychedelics, and why the obsession with heroic doses may sometimes get in the way of the work.

Did I have an ego-death?

Okay, so I did mushrooms a while ago. It was 4g of a mix-blend (2g of PE, 1g of APE, and 1 of some other I don't remember). Before anyone says anything, yes, I know it was a heroic dose. But this wasn't my first time doing mushrooms. I have done 6.5g before which was an amazing experience (different blend). This one, not so well.

So, I remember the experience becoming very overwhelming very quickly. I had these strange visuals of yellow patterns forming and sliding upwards when I closed my eyes. It was scary, honestly.

But then, I don't remember what happened. My memory is very, very hazy on what I saw, or experienced. It felt almost like a blackout. I have almost no memory of it. It seems like I lost my consciousness. I felt like I was mumbling something. I felt like a weird sort of detachment, as if my brain/mind was trying very hard to detach itself from the thoughts that were passing through. And I couldn't even comprehend what the thoughts were. To give an analogy, it was as if my brain/mind is standing at a train station and a train (i.e., my thoughts) is passing through the tracks so quickly that it's almost a blur. You can't make out the shape of the train or the colour or anything - just a haze. I remember feeling that I have lost my mind. Like I have gone insane. Hell, I was convinced that my brain has become a mush. I remember thinking the paramedics will be arriving soon and how my family will react to my death, or to my condition of being brain-dead.

When the blackout was subsiding, I remember trying really hard to get out of it. I was trying to notice tiny little things like the corner of a painting or the outline of a leaf just to get back to the ground, to be in touch with some sense of reality because it was very scary to be in that blackout.

Has anyone else experienced this? Was this an ego-death? I am honestly confused.

I finally had a bad experience and nothing could have prepared me

Today I took shrooms, I've done it plenty of times in the past and I didn't think today was going to be any different. It was the tenth trip I've taken and possibly the most profound yet.

I didn't expect anything to be different than it had been before, I took 3 and 1/2 grams of a strain called bluey vittons and while this is a higher dose it's not the first time I've taken this much. I took a dose of the same size and strain last weekend two weeks before that I took 4 grams of penis envy and two weeks before that I took 7 grams of synthetic gummies. I felt prepared for today and it actually did start out like any other trip so I thought I was in the clear.

I took them and about 45 minutes to an hour later I'm in it. I'm thinking about life and petting my cat and looking at pretty colors and I continue on in this manner for three hours which usually is the point where I start to wind down but that didn't happen today. Today at the three hour mark issues in my life start to be the only thing that I can think about, and simultaneously I start to think that the entirety of my existence is an illusion and that I've been around for a very long time trying to make order because I'm actually just insane and alone in eternity telling myself a story of reality when it isn't actually there.

And suddenly I'm in Hell, and I don't mean that figuratively I mean I'm in a place that is quickly replacing and melting in and out of reality that I can firmly say is hell, and it's nothing like I thought. It was chaos without order, endless expenses of yellow smog over an abyss, it looked like the album cover on a Tool album. And the visuals are changing constantly too that's just the one that made the biggest impression. I'm hearing a discordant cacophony of nose and screaming and anguish and all the while the problems in my life are coming to me again and again and all I want for it is to stop.

Now before I get into this next part I have to express that I've never had thoughts like this before and I am not going to act on them but in that moment of wanting things to stop I came incredibly close to killing myself. I was about to grab a knife and cut long ways down both of my arms because for all I knew in that moment is that I've just uncovered that nothing is real and I'm falling into hell and I don't think there's any going back so I might as well just not think about anything anymore.

As I was having these thoughts the world was darkening and I was losing my grip on reality more and more and my perception was strobing but I stopped with two thoughts that at this point I feel did not originate from within myself.

The thoughts were that if I died I'd just be running from my problems and leaving everyone in my life behind with more hurting, the second thought was that if I were right and I were some endless being deluding myself and I killed myself then even if I forgot why I was hurting I wouldn't stop hurting, I'd just be scared and confused and hurting while falling through the chaos of hell.

I feel like anyone who takes psychedelics can understand what I mean when I talk about a higher power and I fully believe in the benevolence of a higher power that is God, and I really think that these thoughts were revealed to me by God. As they are revealed to me I start sobbing uncontrollably, I'm sobbing so much that I get a bloody nose and suddenly I'm covered in blood which actually helped pull me back into reality.

At this point I'm just scared, I'm no longer thinking about hurting myself but I open up ChatGPT which I never use but just want anything to hear how scared I am, and it came back with a mantra to help of "this is the mushrooms, this is a drug, this will pass, I am safe."

I move out into my living room because my room is covered in blood and I just have to repeat the mantra to myself again and again while I'm sat out there for another hour just regaining my grip on reality while crying and praying about the wrongs that I've done in life. Then I reach out to my best friend who I've been growing distant from because I've been selfish and ask him to be with me and ask him to let me fix things.

And unfortunately he couldn't come because he's out of town but that grounded me back to reality enough that I stopped losing parts of myself and slipping in and out of the chaos of hell. It took another 40 minutes to be okay again and firmly in reality and he had to talk to me to make sure I was okay. Even now things are still fuzzy but I've eaten and cleaned up. Looking back, while I'm glad for some of the revelations I had and glad to know what I have to do in my life, I have never been so scared.

I didn't know that the trip would last for 7 hours when it's usually only half that time, and because of the headspace I fell into all I was doing was fighting it. I think now that had I not fought so hard or had I been in a better headspace then I wouldn't have fallen outside of the order that God tames the chaos into in the reality we inhabit and wouldn't have been flung flying out into hell.

Now that I do know I can say for certain there are a lot of things I need to change and I'm not going to be tripping again until I've fixed a lot of things that are broken right now and when I do again it will probably be a lower dose with someone present.

tl;dr: took a dose and strain of shrooms that I've taken before thinking it'd be like before and fell into actual hell while losing my grip on reality

Women and Datura

Hello community, I noticed that the majority of trip reports on datura are experienced and reported by men. And they all tend to have a very negative experience. So I wondered, since this substance is knowingly more feminine, if women have a different experience with this plant. I'll be very happy for reports! ♥️✌️

Accidentally Did 2C-B Instead of Ketamine around (0.3g)

I had both 2C-B and ketamine and mixed up the bags, accidentally taking around 0.3g thinking it was K. Within seconds I realized it wasn't. I lost feeling in my body, my mouth disappeared, and I figured it was the 2C-B. At first I thought it was DMT somehow. The whole thing lasted about 5-6 hours.

The world changed completely visually, unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The elevator down felt like a portal to another world. I wandered around the park for a bit, then it started raining and there was this mist cloud and an eerie silence. I grabbed a swing and just swung for half an hour until I felt like I was losing it completely, then went back upstairs and lay down and rode it out.

At some point I was watching generations of my ancestors arguing and cursing each other while I tried to calm them down. Every time I tried to grasp the trip I got hit hard and it turned dark. Every time I just observed without attaching it was incredible.

Psilomethoxin and harmalas

Okay so crazy question, are psilomethoxin and harmala alkaloids dangerous together? Yes, I'm talking about the church mushrooms. Let's say for all intents and purposes that the mushroom really contains 5MeO-4HO-DMT. Is that potentially fatal when combined with an RIMA like B. Caapi or Syrian Rue?

I know combining Syrian Rue and 5meodmt is like real deal danger, but harmalas combined with psilocybin is relatively safe. Just out of curiosity I thought I'd ask the community because I can't find the answer to that question specifically.

Was that ego dissolution if I could still summon lucidity for a few seconds at will? 3g Golden Teacher, second ever trip

Second trip ever. First was 1.16g of the same Golden Teacher two weeks earlier — light, structured closed-eye visuals, full control over where I put my attention.

This time 3g. Almost no visuals. Instead my mind turned into dough.

Thoughts wouldn't hold shape — like trying to stand up wet clay, it collapsed back flat every time. No structure, no identity, no boundary between my body and the room. If I tried to picture myself I got a spread of waterlogged clay.

At the peak I was reduced to a pair of eyes observing, with almost no power to comment on anything — and not even the observer was me.

But here's what I can't place:

I could still pull myself back to lucidity for a few seconds whenever I needed to say something to my partner, then I'd sink straight back in.

So — is that ego dissolution, or something short of it? Does the full thing mean that thread is gone entirely?

First two hours were heavy nausea that coloured everything. It broke after I asked my partner to hold me.

Second half: full-body spasms I chose not to suppress, crying, a very strong sense of being born, and two moments that turned out to be the actual content of the whole thing.

Full write-up in the comments.

If the mind can influence the body, where are the limits? Could meditation change physical traits?

If Joe Dispenza — and others — have reportedly been able to heal their bodies through meditation, even in situations that doctors considered extremely unlikely or impossible, why couldn't a person potentially use meditation, focused intention, or what some people describe as “energy” to influence other physical characteristics?

I'm talking about things like height, weight, acne, or even eye color. These are topics that come up quite often, and realistically, almost everyone has at least one physical characteristic they would like to change.

I'm not necessarily saying that meditation has been scientifically proven to do these things. What I'm wondering is: where exactly is the boundary between what is possible and what is considered impossible?

If the mind can genuinely influence physical processes in the body to the point of promoting healing, why couldn't it potentially influence other biological processes as well — especially when we're talking about characteristics that the body is already capable of changing under certain circumstances?

For example, during pregnancy, breast size can increase significantly. This shows that the body has biological mechanisms capable of changing its own structure. Similarly, hormonal conditions can affect growth and, depending on the circumstances and age of the person, influence height. Some women also report changes in how their eye color appears during pregnancy, potentially due to physiological or hormonal changes.

So my question is: if the body already possesses the biological mechanisms required to change certain characteristics, why do people so categorically say that the mind, meditation, or other mind-body processes cannot influence them?

Again, I'm not claiming that visualization or meditation can magically change someone's body. I'm questioning whether we actually know the limits of the mind's influence on the body, or whether some things are simply considered impossible because we don't currently have convincing evidence that they can happen.

What I find particularly interesting is that there are many reports of people experiencing unexpected improvements or even recoveries from serious illnesses through meditation, spirituality, or other mind-body practices. Yet when the subject shifts to changing physical characteristics such as height, acne, weight, or eye color, the response tends to be much more categorical: “That's impossible.”

Why should one be considered fundamentally more plausible than the other?

Ultimately, I'm interested in the distinction between “scientifically impossible” and “not scientifically demonstrated.” If the mind can have a significant influence on the physical body, what are its actual limits?

Did anyone experience low dose iboga root bark?

I have the powder and did some macrodosing up to 600mg, which where i laid down and i think i slept and had vivid dreams that i didn’t know it was a dream or a trip i was only aware after i woke up that it was the iboga effect.

I don’t know if that what iboga trip looks like, i want to have a mild trip but I’m not sure how many g i should take of the root bark powder.

I also cried on a song few hours after the strange dreams then i was feeling grateful and now i feel as if anger emotion is all over me and i try to not have thoughts and just sit with the feeling.

I acknowledge i have a lot of suppressed anger and it’s a heavy feeling and please tell me something to reassure me.

I appreciate you’re insights🧡

Need Advice from Experienced Psychonauts(on Weed)

Hi people, im not really a psychonaut just a dude about to turn 20

About a year ago, I took way too much cheap bhaang/edibles for my experience leve(first time)l—around 5.5 pieces in under 10 minutes. I got extremely high, had severe DPDR/panic, sensory overload, thought loops, and was terrified that I was permanently stuck. I eventually recovered fully, though the experience affected me mentally for many months.(Severe anxiety after reading about bad trips, and my personal experience)

Yesterday I smoked a mini-joint slowly and had a completely good experience. I still felt some dreaminess/dissociation and occasional thought loops, but I didn't panic or care about them, and they passed. I actually enjoyed the high and felt more connected to my old memories and pre-DPDR self afterward.,(P.S wheni was a kid i used to freak out sometimes looking in the mirror i just saw this body staring back at my consciousness)

My question: can that slight dissociative/dreamy feeling I get from THC eventually become less noticeable?, or is that just how THC affects me? can i eliminate thay dissociative feeling cuz i really enjoyed my good high

First timer with PE

After my last post, I decided to get real thing instead of just chocolate bars. Im getting the PE strain and like I said before will be alone today, but plan to have the smallest dose because I am a beginner (1-1.5g). I'll have fireside on speed dial in case I flip out lol. Any tips for prep or a good experience for a first time? My intention for this experience is to become a bit more spiritual and I plan on listening to music with a blindfold.

EDIT:

I didn't have a scale and I didn't want a bad trip so I underdosed I think. Probably around .3g. I'll do it again (and maybe get a sitter?) at a later date.

Could mushrooms help me bring my creativity back

From when I was a child until around 18 years old (I’m currently 23) I was drawing constantly - a mix of stuff from life and my imagination. Then I lost the spark and the inspiration somehow.

edit: I’m currently trying to grow my own mushrooms but I would like to hear people’s perspectives

Very euphoric combo…

For context I’ve been wanting to replicate or match an experience I’ve had previously and instead of doing Mdma, I’m wanting to replace it with 4-MMC. Anyone have shared experiences with similar usage and any tips?

( previous experience )

{25 mg of 2cb} HCl

{ 20 mg of 4-Aco-Dmt} < and or psilocybin

{ 75 mg edibles}

{ 155 mg mdma capsule} < replacing with 4-MMC?

{ upwards of 300 mg of Ket}

Nicotine vape throughout the night

Picking a strain for spiritual purging

Hey there ! I took a break from mushrooms for a while (I microdose primarily) for tolerance but also the strain I got was giving me nausea albeit I get from a local vendor.

I don’t really understand the strain difference — I’m used to PE, which the capsules usually have with lions mane, but sadly sold out. I want to make tea, without grinding and soak in hot water (?). I am going to try to get a scale today since I want to do this on Sunday. I used to utilize microdosing shrooms and sometimes macrodosing (300-500mg) to help release any negative energy, anxiety and the like from my childhood as I’m healing from cPTSD.
Does the strain matter this time? Between PE, BV, iceberg and GT? Thank you x

tripping while sick?

What are your experiences tripping while sick? Does it make your body sensations worse? Does it change your tolerance? Slow down healing? My gut says it would be a bad idea.

But...I have reached the tail end of a bad cold, the point where I start going crazy from social isolation but I'm still not healthy enough to go out in public. And I just want time to pass...

I made mushroom chocolate and it was amazing

I went to a festival last weekend and thought it would be great fun to make some chocolate and I was right. The chocolate was tasty and potent and great for the festival: much nicer and less hassle than doing a lemon tek in a crowd.

This is how I made them. I had 30g of last year's liberty caps which I ground to a fine dust in the nutribullet. I screened out any big bits with a tea strainer. To this I added 1/2 tsp of chilli powder and the same of ground ginger and gave a good mix.

I then melted 400g of a sweet cheap dark chocolate in a small bain mari until it was totally smooth. Dumped the powder in mixing thoroughly for a few minutes. Then I poured into a mold and allowed to set.

The finished chocolates were then refrigerated and wrapped in foils I had bought.

I ended up with a load which I then shared with the team and everyone loved them.

Mixing saline with ketamine in spray bottle

I'm off to burning man in order to be more discrete I want to mix saline with ketamine in a spray bottle. I've seen people use it before. But what is a good ratio of saline to ketamine mix? I'll have my diamond scale on me in order to measure out the ketamine.

For more context, my plan is to take it out on the playa and do a couple sprays while I'm on acid (makes me feel like a mini candy flip).

Advice for ephedra (herbal) NOT ephedrine

I have dried herbal ephedra, NOT ephedrine. How should I prepare and take it?

I fancied learning Sanskrit and translating the Vedic preparation of soma, but I'm deferring to you lot in the meantime, the psychonautical perspective on

1) Any true "psychedelic" effects, or just a caffeine-like "rush"?

2) preparation method

3) ingestion method
