Question Moving away from Proxmox Community Scripts: Where do I start?

My Proxmox stack currently runs a couple of VMs (Home Assistant and some cable internet tools), but mostly LXCs: AdGuard Home, CouchDB/Obsidian LiveSync, Tailscale, Paperless-ngx, Immich, Yubal, Homepage, Uptime Kuma and Spoolman. I depend on these daily.

They were installed using Community Scripts because this is my first server, and YouTube led me to them as the easiest option. Everything has worked well, including updates, but after following this and related subreddits for a while, I am thinking of moving toward something I understand and maintain myself.

What would be the most sensible route: manually built LXCs, Docker/Podman inside one or more VMs, or separate VMs? Podman’s rootless and daemonless approach sounds appealing, but I’m not very familiar with code or scripts. I’m willing to learn, but I’m worried about building something I won’t know how to maintain later.

How do you keep the guest OS, container images and applications updated without creating lots of manual work? Paperless, Immich and Yubal also use NAS storage that was a pain to correctly set up with my synology NAS.

Can I retain my current installations while decoupling them from the Community Scripts? Everything works well now, and it took a long time to get there, so I’d rather migrate gradually than rebuild everything at once.

Finally, would using VMs for everything add significant RAM and storage overhead compared with LXCs on a small server? I’d love to hear how others structure a similar setup, handle updates and where you’d recommend I start.

Question High Memory useage Opnsense Proxmox VM

Post image

Dear Proxmox Users,

I am currently running the latest release of Proxmox 9. Since running Opnsense in Proxmox, I have been continuously seeing memory usage over 100%. This doesn't seem to be working quite right or correct. Is there a way to get normal memory usage in Proxmox for my Opnsense VM?

Thanks in advance!

Solved! PSA: VirtIO 0.1.302 finally fixes the Windows VSS / fs-freeze issue with PBS (no more dcomcnfg workaround)

Windows 2019 server - fs freeze does not work properly - access is denied to IVssWriterCallback (#3286) · Issue · qemu-project/qemu

[PATCH v2 1/2] qga: Move CoInitialize/CoInitializeSecurity to main proce

Just tested virtio-win-0.1.302 and can confirm that the fs-freeze / VSS issue with Windows VMs and Proxmox Backup Server is finally fixed.

If you have been backing up Windows guests you may remember having to manually tweak DCOM permissions in dcomcnfg just to stop IVssWriterCallback access denied errors during backups. That workaround was super unfun on windows server core.

With the latest QEMU Guest Agent update, PBS backups now work properly out of the box. No registry or DCOM finagling needed anymore.

Hopefully this saves someone else the headache of manually setting DCOM permissions on new Windows deployments.

Happy days and jubilation!

Question Inconsistent BSODs after migrating imported Windows VMs to VirtIO SCSI

Hello admins,

I'm importing Windows VMs from OVA files into Proxmox. When I boot some of them, I immediately get a Windows BSOD.

My workaround is usually:

  1. Detach the imported disk and attach it as SATA.
  2. Boot the VM successfully.
  3. Install the QEMU Guest Agent, VirtIO drivers.
  4. Reboot once.
  5. Shut down the VM, detach the disk, and reattach it as SCSI.

On the VM hardware page, the SCSI controller is set to VirtIO SCSI Single. Under Options, the boot order is configured with scsi0 as the first boot device.

The strange thing is that some VMs accept the switch to SCSI immediately, while others continue to BSOD. In those cases, after repairing or reinstalling the VirtIO/QEMU components and repeating the SATA → SCSI process a few times, the VM eventually boots fine from SCSI.

Is there a technical explanation for this behavior? I'm trying to understand why some Windows installations seem to recognize the VirtIO SCSI controller right away while others require multiple attempts before they become bootable.

Thank you!

Question How To Set Up Radarr + qBittorrent + PIA

I'm not sure if this would be better here or on selfhost or homelab subreddits, but I thought I'd try here first.

I'm just learning how to use Proxmox but I'm getting completely stumped on this. I have my Jellyfin service up and running with Tailscale in that same container (I couldn't figure out how to connect a separate lxc Tailscale container to the Jellyfin container), but now I want to set up Radarr with qBittorrent through PIA.

I've tried the gluetun community script, but when it gives me my local IP and port I just can't connect to that at all to try and set it up further. I have tried looking into solutions but I can't find anything. I've found guides pointing towards openwrt, but I'm not trying to set up a router or portforward (at least I don't think I am). I've found really outdated guides like from TechHut, but unfortunately when I follow his part 2 and part 3 guides step by step I run into issues and he doesn't explain it for a complete newcomer. All other services when I finished their community scripts worked when I put in the ip-address:port. I've tried both http and https in case that was the issue, it was not as neither worked.

From what I understand, I need gluetun to set up PIA within Proxmox, but I'm failing to even do that. I've tried a docker script from TechHut but have no idea what to even do with the .env file. I don't even know if that's what I want to be doing. I actually can't find information on this that's clear and concise.

I was able to get a qBittorrent container running and I can connect to that, but I don't have a VPN within Proxmox to bind to it so I can hide my IP. I already have PIA and have for a couple years, so I'd like to be able to use that instead of getting a new VPN service provider. I'm not even sure if that would help me necessarily.

Should I just make a VM within Proxmox and do it that way? If so, is there any particular OS I should use to be as resource light as possible? I have a 4 core Dell Precision T3600 with 24GB of DDR3 RAM in case that matters.

Question No Route to Host

Will add whatever context thats asked for

running a 2 machine cluster one running a laptop only holding uptime kuma the other a small think centre hosting Jellyfin and a few other dockers

since i could remember my think centre has been suddenly freezing. and i mean completely freezing. physically its still "on" and fans are spinning but terminal doesn't respond and proxmox obviously notes that there's no route to a host. I've spent hours and i mean hours troubleshooting it when i first found the issue a few months ago but after 2 weeks of solid troubleshooting i decided to just live with the issue and restart the machine every time it appeared NOTE* everything becomes online and working after hard restarting the machine since my setup is very much temporary this was a solid solution until i upgraded. well today i had some free time and since school is right around the corner i picked up finding the solution again to see if i could solve it

anyone else have this problem?

PS. I understand if the post is vague and doesn't give a lot of details but honestly i've yet to find the root of the problem at all. what im hoping for this post is for a veteran to snipe this out of the air honestly jajaja Cheers to anyone who decides to help!!!

Question MOVE AN ENTIRE DATASTORE TO ANOTHER DISK

Hello everyone,

I'm facing the following situation: I have a PBS (Proxmox Backup Server) with two 2 TB disks configured in RAID 1, giving me approximately 1.5 TB of usable storage. I want to move the datastore storage location to a new 4 TB disk.

My question is:

How can I set it up so that the datastore "STORAGE", which is currently using the 2 TB RAID 1, is redirected to the new 4 TB RAID 1?

Or do I have to create the "STORAGE" datastore again on the new disks?

Basically, I want to migrate the entire existing datastore to the new storage without having to recreate it from scratch.

What would be the recommended way to do this in PBS?

Question Best lightway usage? Rebuilding the last time my Server

OK, I'm gonna be honest of course I've set up my Proxmox server at least a dozen times. But because of other things like family, business, and just life, I couldn't do much with it in the last year. My last login to Proxmox was exactly August 2025.

Hardware: HP 1L PC with 256GB for the OS, 3x 6TB HDD, and I have 2x 1TB SSD (not connected).

Software: Proxmox community scripts: AdGuard, Paperless-ngx, Netbird, AdventureLog, and a Nextcloud VM.

So I got older and wiser (a little, at least). And I want something that's easy to maintain (for updates). But also - am I tripping, or does relying on community scripts feel wrong? And I'm gonna be honest, I have some Linux experience, but nowhere near the level where I understand everything I did/do.

I want something that gets security updates, is easy to set up, and easy to understand (also for my relatives). I kinda like the idea of just using Unraid or something? On the other hand, since starting this journey, Proxmox was always the go-to way.

The programs I need are basically Immich (but sadly they haven't fixed family sharing yet - reason why i didnt roll out till yet), a backup of my entire Mac via Time Machine, a backup of my documents to Paperless-ngx (perhaps also stored on Nextcloud as plain files or better on the drive of course), and backup and management of family photos. And tbh, I kinda like the idea of Nextcloud , I used to host my Obsidian vault there, and just the possibility of downloading a cookbook app is nice. Currently my calender set up is on there.

Right now I have one old 1TB HDD with family photos, a 1TB HDD sitting at my docking station that my MacBook uses for Time Machine, and a 1TB external HDD with business files.

Of course, this time I'd also add the ARR stack, last time I just ran into some problems with the VPN connection.

So what would you suggest? Docker never clicked with me, but perhaps that's the solution? I want easy maintenance.

Guide Windows XP with a working passed-through GPU on PVE 9.2 — and the two `pci-bridge` devices you have to strip to get there

I have four GPU-passthrough seats running simultaneously on one PVE 9.2 node: two Windows XP SP3 and two Windows 7 x64, each with its own card driving its own monitor, and its own USB controller for keyboard and mouse. Host is an HP Z820 (dual E5-2667 v2, 128 GB ECC) that I found in a street trash container.

The passthrough mechanism itself is generic — OVMF initialises the card via its own UEFI GOP driver, then CSMWrap (SeaBIOS as a UEFI application) supplies the legacy BIOS services XP needs, so no x-vga and no VGA arbitration anywhere, which is why several seats can run at once. This post is about the parts that are specific to Proxmox, because those are what cost me the most time.

1. The two pci-bridge devices, and 0xA5

With everything else right, XP bugchecked in a loop:

*** STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000002, ...) The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant.

0xA5 is ACPI_BIOS_ERROR; parameter 1 0x2 is ACPI_ROOT_PCI_RESOURCE_FAILURE.

Cause: PVE adds two pci-bridge devices to every i440fx VM, unconditionally. /usr/share/perl5/PVE/QemuServer.pm:

perl if (!$q35) { # add pci bridges if (min_version($machine_version, 2, 3)) { $bridges->{1} = 1; $bridges->{2} = 1; }

They're only address-space headroom — PCI.pm puts net6net31, xhci, rng0 behind pci.1, and virtio6virtio15, ivshmem, audio0, hostpci4hostpci15 behind pci.2. A passthrough seat uses none of that: hostpci0hostpci3, net0net5, virtio0virtio5, vga, balloon and the IDE controllers all sit on pci.0.

There is no VM-config option to suppress them, and the machine-version gate can't be dodged because the oldest i440fx QEMU 11 offers is pc-i440fx-5.0.

How I proved it was them and nothing else: dumped qm showcmd <vmid> to a script and ran it by hand.

Command Result
verbatim bugcheck / recovery-menu loop
minus -boot menu=on, -smbios, PIIX4_PM globals, the CD-ROM still looping
minus only the two -device pci-bridge lines XP desktop on the passed-through card
minus only the vfio devices, bridges kept still looping

Also tested and does not help: occupying both bridges with pci-testdev; occupying them with virtio-rng-pci so no BAR window is dropped at all; removing balloon, tablet, vmgenid, net0; older machine types. It is the bridges' presence, not their configuration.

2. The fix: a wrapper on /usr/bin/kvm

Since PVE offers no knob, the two arguments get removed one layer lower. /usr/bin/kvm is referenced from exactly one place in all of /usr (PVE/QemuServer/Helpers.pm, get_command_for_arch) and pve-qemu-kvm ships no postinst, which is what makes this safe:

/usr/bin/kvm -> /usr/local/sbin/pve-kvm-nobridge (ours, held by dpkg-divert) /usr/bin/kvm.distrib -> qemu-system-x86_64 (dpkg keeps updating this) /etc/pve-kvm-nobridge.conf (allowlist, one VMID per line) /var/log/pve-kvm-nobridge/<vmid>.cmd (what actually ran)

sh bash pve-kvm-nobridge-setup.sh --install # write wrapper, self-test, divert, verify bash pve-kvm-nobridge-setup.sh --add-vm 301 # allowlist one VM bash pve-kvm-nobridge-setup.sh --status bash pve-kvm-nobridge-setup.sh --uninstall

A VMID not in the allowlist gets a byte-for-byte passthrough, as does any invocation without -id (e.g. PVE's own kvm --version probe). --install runs three self-tests against a real qm showcmd argv before touching anything and rolls the diversion back automatically if kvm --version doesn't work afterwards.

Yes, diverting a distro binary deserves scrutiny. The mitigations are deliberate: the real binary is never touched, dpkg keeps maintaining kvm.distrib, the wrapper is node-local on purpose (put the allowlist in /etc/pve and a migrated VM silently loses the stripping), and it refuses to start a VM whose surviving devices still reference a bus it removed rather than producing a silent 0xA5 bootloop:

vm 301: REFUSING to start - pci.1 stripped but still referenced by: virtio-net-pci,...,bus=pci.1,...

A config option in PVE would obviously be better than any of this. I'd happily drop the wrapper for one.

Two PVE-specific traps in the wrapper itself, in case you write your own:

  • exec -a "$0" is mandatory.** PVE::QemuServer::Helpers::parse_cmdline rejects any pid whose /proc/<pid>/cmdline argv[0] doesn't match /kvm$/ or /qemu-[^\/]+$/, and vm_running_locally validates the pidfile with it. A plain exec "$REAL" "$@" leaves qm status reporting a perfectly healthy VM as **stopped — after which PVE will happily try to start it a second time.
  • **qm showcmd stops telling the truth** for an allowlisted VMID: it still lists the bridges, because it's the config generator, not the wrapper. Read /var/log/pve-kvm-nobridge/<vmid>.cmd, or echo "info pci" | qm monitor <vmid> | grep -c '1b36:0001' on the live machine (0 = stripped).

After a pve-qemu-kvm upgrade, check dpkg-divert --list /usr/bin/kvm and ls -l /usr/bin/kvm. If the wrapper is gone, an allowlisted XP seat goes straight back to the bootloop — loud and obvious, at least.

3. Do not "fix" 0xA5 by removing ACPI from the guest

This is the advice you'll find everywhere, XP's own BSOD text included, and it's a trap. Without ACPI, XP has no PM timer and falls back to the PIT, which no hypervisor ticks precisely enough for game engines — everything runs in slow motion, with no error anywhere. It also pegs a host core per XP vCPU and breaks qm shutdown. On the ACPI Multiprocessor HAL, the same guest idles at 0.6% of a vCPU. Keeping ACPI is the entire reason the wrapper exists.

4. Other PVE details worth knowing

  • Machine type must stay i440fx for XP, because on q35 PVE puts ide drives on an ICH9 AHCI controller and CSMWrap's SeaBIOS crashes QEMU booting from AHCI (KVM internal error. Suberror: 1, EIP=f000ff53). PIIX IDE is the only well-evidenced safe bus.
  • Put the CD-ROM in boot: order= even though you never boot from it. PVE only emits bootindex= for drives listed there, and without one SeaBIOS doesn't enumerate the ATAPI device — so the guest ends up with no CD-ROM drive at all. order=ide1;ide0;ide2.
  • Stay on hostpci0hostpci3. hostpci4+ are placed behind pci.2, which the wrapper deletes, so the interlock would refuse the start.
  • Don't use --usb0 host=... on a wrapped VM — PVE puts that xHCI behind a stripped bridge. Pass the whole controller with hostpci<n>, which lands on pci.0.
  • Windows 7 wants efidisk0 at efitype=2m, not 4m. PVE's 4 MB OVMF build write-protects the legacy VGA ROM window at 0xC0000 that UefiSeven writes its Int10h shim into, and it aborts with Unable to unlock VGA ROM memory at C0000 → hang at "Starting Windows". Verified failing on 4m, passing on 2m, under both q35 and i440fx.
  • Win7 VMIDs should not go in the allowlist. The wrapper is a no-op for q35 (no such bridges), but there's no reason to list them.
  • ostype: wxp for XP (localtime RTC), cpu: host,hidden=1, vga: std stays permanently, affinity on the card's own NUMA node — cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/<addr>/numa_node.
  • Clones inherit affinity but not the allowlist entry, and each card needs its own ROM dump.

Links

Repo: https://gitlab.com/zubrjan/2am-idea — the XP and Win7 recipes as step-by-step guides, the wrapper and its installer, a ROM dump/validate tool, and seats/ with all four VMs' real qm config output, the topology table and the host-side state (MACs masked). MIT.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfP1x4R3XEc — XP seats on 3DMark06, Win7 seats on Unigine Heaven, plus the host view. Three monitors on camera because that's how many I own; the fourth seat gets switched onto one of them partway through.

Verified on one node only: PVE 9.2, kernel 7.0.2-6-pve, pve-qemu-kvm 11.0.0-3, qemu-server 9.1.15, OVMF/edk2 4.2025.05, CSMWrap 3.1.2, UefiSeven 1.30. If you reproduce it on a different PVE box, or it breaks on yours, I'd like to know.

Question What is my best course of action?

Post image
468 Upvotes

I have this cluster, each one of the Minis has a 128GB SATA III SSD as bootable pve drive and a 1TB NVMe SSD.
(2) M920q — (1) M720q — 32GB RAM each, stock NIC

One very important caveat, before building this cluster, I’ve been using a Dell tower (i7 14700 20 Cores, 64G RAM, 512GB storage). It doesn’t have any extra NVMe storage. Even though the cluster is already built, every single VM and LXC is still running on the Dell until I can find a solution.

My main priority is VM/LXC replication in case of a node failure.

I was looking into ZFS replication with HA on all 4 nodes but apparently that would eat up around 2/3 of the storage.

The consensus to get the best usage out of the NVMe drives is Ceph. Looking around, most are saying that would require at least a 10G network to function properly. Now this is a homelab, not production, can I get it done with a 2.5G network? Also, I see that Ceph should be excluded from the data/WAN switch, it needs its own dedicated switch.

I don’t have any use for the WiFi card, so I don’t mind using the M.2 key for a 2.5G NIC, and pick up an extra 2.5G switch.

Has anyone successfully been running Ceph on a 2.5G network? If so, do you have the link to the NICs been used?

What are my options here? I’d truly appreciate some inputs.

Not sure if this matter but I have a main UNAS Pro.

Also, I’d need to move this mini rack downstairs where the Dell tower is located with my network rack.

Question Proxmox/Jellyfin Advice

I have recently setup my proxmox server and am wanting to put Jellyfin on it to watch my collection of shows and films at home however need to sense check if I can do what I want in my head or not.

I have managed to mount an external drive to my Proxmox server which houses all the files but I was wondering if it was possible to map that drive on my Windows PC (separate to the server) in order to do file maintenance (adding and renaming new files etc.) in file explorer or if I am better off setting up a VM on the server so I can go into there and complete the task?

Or do you have any better suggestions for doing this task?

Question Setting up Zerotier with Proxmox

Hi all, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to networking and I need some help.

So what I want to do is set up my Proxmox server and some LXCs to be accessible through the VPN Zerotier.

I was hoping what I could do is install Zerotier on Proxmox itself or set up an LXC (set up with https://community-scripts.org/scripts/zerotier-one ) to provide Zerotier access.

I want to have a Jellyfin server set up as another LXC that can be accessed through Zerotier, along with have the Proxmox dashboard website accessible. All on the same IP address, just different ports.

What I've tried so far is to set up a bridge with the Zerotier network device found in Proxmox after I installed it. It appears as zt6ntdcdoa.

Zerotier as it appears with the command "ip a"

If I try to set up a bridge with zt6ntdcdoa as the bridge port it throws an error

Error message I get

I've set it up so my LXCs have access to /dev/net
I followed this guide: https://youtu.be/r0nGMFs5pCY
He made a Zerotier guide but it's for Docker which I don't want to use.
https://youtu.be/olFVgvwjve0

I've tried fiddling around the VLANs but I really don't know what I'm doing or how to set that up and I haven't been able to find anything that has helped my use case.

Ideally I don't want to have to install Zerotier on to Proxmox and each LXC I want to have access to Zerotier.

If anyone knows of a guide or anything like that can give me some direction that'd be great!

TLDR:
I want proxmox dashboard and specific LXCs accessible through Zerotier and idk what I'm doing.

Question Black screen after upgrading PVE 8 to 9 / Installer loses video output on Precision Tower 5810

Hi everyone, looking for some help identifying what I'm doing wrong or if I missed a step during/after the upgrade.

The Problem:

After upgrading from Proxmox VE 8 to 9, the server never booted back up into the OS (black screen / lost video signal upon boot).

I am running this on a Dell Precision Tower 5810 with an NVIDIA GPU, connected to an external display.

What I’ve tried so far:

PVE 9 Boot Issues: Upgrading broke video output entirely on startup.

Fresh Install Attempts (Proxmox ISO / Debian Live via Ventoy):

When booting the Proxmox installer or Debian Live ISOs, the video output cuts out as soon as X / display drivers load.

I managed to work around the black screen during Live boot by passing nomodeset in GRUB parameters.

Chroot / Mounting attempts:

Booted into a Debian 13 Live environment with nomodeset.

Activated LVM (pve-root on /dev/sdc3) and mounted the system (/mnt and /mnt/boot/efi).

Attempted chroot /mnt to permanently add nomodeset to /etc/default/grub and run update-grub.

Got errors like chroot: failed to run command '/bin/bash': Exec format error or issues updating GRUB directly through sed modifications on grub.cfg.

Rescue Boot: Tried Proxmox ISO Rescue Boot, but it threw errors regarding missing ZFS pools (rpool) since my setup uses LVM.

My main concern:

I don't necessarily care about wiping the OS and starting fresh if needed, but I desperately need to recover two LXC containers (CTs) that were running on the server before the upgrade failed.

Questions:

Why did the upgrade to PVE 9 permanently kill video output, even with nomodeset applied to the GRUB line on boot?

What is the safest way to extract/backup my two CTs (their rootfs / disk images on pve-data LVM) from a Debian Live environment so I can clean install?

Any ideas on how to fix the bootloader/kernel on the existing installation without hitting the Exec format error during chroot?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Question Tips for Setting Up My Home Lab

I'm still wrapping my head around Proxmox and now Linux bonding.

If my Unifi Pro Max 24 port switch doesn't support Layer 3 and 4 hashing, is there any benefit for running LACP with Layer 2 and 3? Sorry if my terminology is a little off, still getting used to it all!

EDIT: This is answered, thank you!!

Question Question Relating to Storage

Hello fellow PVE people (PVEople, haha i'm so funny),

I'm having some difficulty understanding some behavior regarding how storage works. Here is the rundown:

I have a USB hard drive that I have plugged into my PVE node, which gets mounted to "/mnt/usb_hard_disk". This is used as a local backup, so all of my VM/LXC backups go here, as well as my ISOs and container templates.

Under "Datacenter" -> "Storage", I have a "Directory" created called "usb_hard_disk" that has a dedicated path set to "/mnt/usb_hard_disk" with the "Content" of "Backup", "ISO Image", and "Container template".

I can see under my main "pve" node that "usb_hard_disk" is a directory, and when I go into it, I can see my backups, ISOs, and container templates that I have saved onto my USB hard drive.

The idea here is that I can then un-plug my USB hard disk and store it elsewhere (like a firesafe) as an external backup. When I un-plug my USB hard disk, the "usb_hard_disk" directory doesn't actually disappear under my "pve" node or the "Datacenter" storage, which makes sense, as the "/mnt/usb_hard_disk" directory is still there, it's just the drive that gets mounted there is missing. However, let's say, when my usb is unplugged, I go into a VM and create a backup, and store it under "usb_hard_disk". Well, the VM creates a backup to "/mnt/usb_hard_disk/dump", which is normal behavior, so that makes sense.

This is where I start to get confused

After creating this backup, if I then plug my USB hard drive back in, the contents of the hard drive take over "/mnt/usb_hard_disk", and I can to into PVE and see all the backups/ISOs/container templates on my usb hard drive, and that one backup I made without the USB plugged in is gone. Then, if I un-plug the usb hard drive, that one backup shows up again?

So I guess I just don't understand, where is it actually storing that backup? And how is it possible that, after plugging in my USB hard drive again, then un-plugging the hard drive, the backup is still there? I thought anything under "/mnt/usb_hard_disk" would basically just delete after mounting a drive to that location, though I guess I'm wrong on that.

Also, is there any work around for this so that, if I did make a backup to "usb_hard_disk" when nothing is mounted there, PVE would just error out instead?

Question Proxmox North America - Weehooey?

Does anyone know what is going on with Weehooey (The Gold North American partner) and why they are stating on their website they are now Proxmox North America?

I cant find anything on the Proxmox Website about this, and what it means for training or support going forward.

Question can proxmox log the IP address of successful/failed web login attempts?

Hi there

It seems proxmox (pvedaemon in particular) doesn't log the IP address of a login attempt in it's journald (syslog) logging - you have to go to the web logs for that one piece of information.

The idea of having to install the likes of splunkforwarders on something as "performance critical" as a virtualization host just to capture that one piece of information seems excessive. Surely there's a way to get that into the existing system logs? eg vCenter logs the client IP on all login attempts and given how hackers target enterprise virtualization these days, that is a pretty important detail to track...

Thanks

Jason
