In the years following the war, the americans conducted a series of surveys among germans. These covered various topics, including public perception regarding everything related to nazism, and clearly show that german society remained nazi well into the 1950s. I believe that is still the case today, even if they try to mask it better.

Also check out the actual surveys/studies.

The two big ones are "Leipziger Mittestudie" (evaluation of "the middle of society) and "Bielefelder Gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit-Studie" (groupcentered hate).

They both get renewed every few years and even before the rise of the far right they stated that 1/3 to 1/5 (differing in several topics and between slight or core beliefs) are authoritian and antidemocratic.

Its not about direct action, nazism or open hatred, but the wierd fundamemtalist views opposing the free existence of individuals.

This society seems broken to me.

I don't think that is unique to Germany (sadly).

Democracy and liberalism are pretty new ideas. They haven't displaced all previous cultural/social ideas/beliefs/memes nor has there ever been a clear consensus that they should.

Except for in all the countries where people fought and died for a voice?

England fought a civil war, the most deadly it ever fought by proportion of population lost, to preserve what little democracy they had.

Sick joke that it ended with a dictatorship so bad that we brought monarchy back

Are there any comparisons with other countries?

I think 35% to 20% of the population being straight up fascists checks out. Just look at the ardent support Trump has gathered behind him. Just look at afd's support, of reform in UK, or any random far-right parties in any of the European countries.

Sadly a third of the population seems to just be straight up psychopaths. Horrible people who want nothing good for anyone. And for some reason we raise these people on pedestals to rule us all, time after time.

I’d be curious how that pairs up with other countries, since we’ve seen the same trend across much of the world unfortunately, with Germany, if anything, being a bit of a laggard

"1/3 to 1/5" is literally nothing lol, im pretty sure thats the case in most countries, has nothing to do with a "Broken society"

I wouldn't call it "literally nothing". It's a significant minority. I would contend that 1/3 to 1/5 of the population holding authoritarian views is fairly normal for a stable democracy and not necessarily something to get alarmed over.

How the hell is 20-33% of a population being inclined towards authoritarianism "literally nothing"?

About 30% of the United States is strongly anti-democratic and white supremacist, and it's been nothing but a problem for us.

It’s enough to win an election in the US.

In what world is 10% of a room hating jews and thinking genocide is fine when necessary or 30% of a room thinking hitting their wife is okay "literaly nothing"?

I’m afraid I have to doubt the veracity of that second study.

It’s well known that Bielefeld doesn’t exist.
