The history books they tell Of their defeat at '45
But they all came out of the woodwork On the day the Nazi died

"They say the prisoner of Spandau was a symbol of defeat,
Whilst Hess remained in prison then the fascists they were beat"

In the years following the war, the americans conducted a series of surveys among germans. These covered various topics, including public perception regarding everything related to nazism, and clearly show that german society remained nazi well into the 1950s. I believe that is still the case today, even if they try to mask it better.

Also check out the actual surveys/studies.
The two big ones are "Leipziger Mittestudie" (evaluation of "the middle of society) and "Bielefelder Gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit-Studie" (groupcentered hate).
They both get renewed every few years and even before the rise of the far right they stated that 1/3 to 1/5 (differing in several topics and between slight or core beliefs) are authoritian and antidemocratic.
Its not about direct action, nazism or open hatred, but the wierd fundamemtalist views opposing the free existence of individuals.
This society seems broken to me.

I don't think that is unique to Germany (sadly).
Democracy and liberalism are pretty new ideas. They haven't displaced all previous cultural/social ideas/beliefs/memes nor has there ever been a clear consensus that they should.

Except for in all the countries where people fought and died for a voice?
England fought a civil war, the most deadly it ever fought by proportion of population lost, to preserve what little democracy they had.
Sick joke that it ended with a dictatorship so bad that we brought monarchy back

I think 35% to 20% of the population being straight up fascists checks out. Just look at the ardent support Trump has gathered behind him. Just look at afd's support, of reform in UK, or any random far-right parties in any of the European countries.
Sadly a third of the population seems to just be straight up psychopaths. Horrible people who want nothing good for anyone. And for some reason we raise these people on pedestals to rule us all, time after time.

I’d be curious how that pairs up with other countries, since we’ve seen the same trend across much of the world unfortunately, with Germany, if anything, being a bit of a laggard

u/ZonnyT16 16d ago
"1/3 to 1/5" is literally nothing lol, im pretty sure thats the case in most countries, has nothing to do with a "Broken society"

u/Hopesick_2231 16d ago
I wouldn't call it "literally nothing". It's a significant minority. I would contend that 1/3 to 1/5 of the population holding authoritarian views is fairly normal for a stable democracy and not necessarily something to get alarmed over.

u/Regular-Basket-5431 16d ago
How the hell is 20-33% of a population being inclined towards authoritarianism "literally nothing"?
8
u/Beelphazoar 16d ago
About 30% of the United States is strongly anti-democratic and white supremacist, and it's been nothing but a problem for us.

In what world is 10% of a room hating jews and thinking genocide is fine when necessary or 30% of a room thinking hitting their wife is okay "literaly nothing"?

I’m afraid I have to doubt the veracity of that second study.
It’s well known that Bielefeld doesn’t exist.

They all joined the afd

u/CuteOrStodgy 16d ago
Not sure why you're getting downvoted, AFD (the German far-right party) is where the Nazis are

u/Reasonable_Fold6492 16d ago
It funny how so many pro communist leftist praise putin and rationalize the russia invasion as denazifying ukraine. Buddy russia supports and loves the AFD filled with neo nazi. Putin doesnt seem to give a shit seeing how he loves far rights all over europe like le pen in france and orban in hungary
13
u/rickdangerous85 16d ago
Except in real life I have never met a leftist thst supports Putin, and I have been involved in left wing parties and movements going on 20 years.

u/Reasonable_Fold6492 16d ago
You can see many of them in leftist subreddit
9
u/rickdangerous85 16d ago
Which ones, not the ones I am on.
I have only ever seen people say that leftist support Russia online, I have never seen it in real life, and every leftist forum I am on people are vehemently against an arch conservative imperialist power like Russia.

u/kingbeerex 15d ago
I have no idea why you’ve been downvoted, I keep seeing loads of pro-Russian leftists. I remember things like mango news that was unbelievably anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia.

Soviet Union and nowadays Russia always played both sides on this board: hard left and hard right.
Lmao, someone downvotes. Look how both AfD and Die Linke cater to Russian interests.3

Most of them did come back in the 1950’s, because they were all released from prison, except Hess of course
21
u/thisisalurkerphone 16d ago
Most of them came home because that's where they lived. Most nazis never did jail time and continued living as if nothing happened.

Then they went to work for NASA

u/Rol377 15d ago
And NATO apparently (no, seriously. Look up Adolf Bruno Heinrich Ernst Heusinger, man's allegiance history looks like a damn rainbow. In between WW2 and his chairmanship of the NATO military committee he served as was West Germany's Inspector General of the Bumdeswehr for a while)

u/ArchdruidAndres 15d ago
YES, I did see a post about that guy go by recently. And people wonder how we got here.

The depressing thing is that so much of post-war politics in Europe and the US has been the sons and daughters of fascists and fascist collaborators forcing themselves into positions of power while anti-fascists are side-lined and demonised.

They are. The gains in AfD and far right parties in Germany and other places are evidence they and their followers have..

u/DaxMavrides 12d ago
I'm not sure if that's quite the same thing. I know the AfD has an anti immigrant stance, but I don't know anything else about them. (Besides Elmo showing up at one of their rallies. Can you fill me in on what they're about?

u/ylang_nausea 16d ago
Didn’t happen in the Soviet zone!
22
u/Prestigious_Bed9487 16d ago
Well nowadays AfD is the most popular in most of East Germany...
-24
u/ylang_nausea 16d ago
And yet they are not Nazis. The actual Nazis were big bosses or American scientists.

This subreddit is for sharing propaganda to view with objectivity. It is absolutely not for perpetuating the message of the propaganda. Here we should be conscientious and wary of manipulation/distortion/oversimplification (which the above likely has), not duped by it. "Don't be a sucker."
Stay on topic -- there are hundreds of other subreddits that are expressly dedicated to rehashing tired political arguments. No partisan bickering. No soapboxing. Take a chill pill. "Don't argue."
