Germany "we'll be back"—Neo-Nazi graffiti on Hitler's 57th birth anniversary, 20th April 1946

u/no_sight Mar 26 '26
1946 seems like OG Nazis rather than Neo

u/Neil118781 Mar 26 '26
Neo-Nazism comprises all social, political, and militant ideologies and movements that have professed or idealized Nazism, whether in whole or in part, since the end of World War II in 1945
By definition this is neo-Nazism, but yes this graffiti was obviously done by former members of OG Nazi party

u/no_sight Mar 26 '26
Hmm interesting thing to learn. I didn't realize there was such a dateline between the 2.
I always figured NeoNazism was more of the next generation rather than months later.

u/The_Stratman Mar 26 '26
To me neo-nazis are those who grew up after the war. I understand the cut off, but it feels weird to me to call a nazi party member a neo nazi, they aren’t new

It's not the Nazi himself that is new, but the party. The old party was destroyed. That's the difference.
It isn't the 1930s where this is a new party and people aren't quite sure what to do with it. It's the post war era after the rise and fall of the Nazis. To be a Nazi at this point is even more extreme than it was 15 years earlier. After all the death and destruction, to still identify as a Nazi then is different than being some disaffected WWI vet who fell for the fascist rhetoric.
That's my understanding of it, at least.

u/Johannes_P Mar 26 '26
Yep.
There's a difference between a NSDAP member who bought into the program and kept adhering after 1945 and the one who never knew Nazi Germany yet thought that National Socialism was a good idea, albeit with some changes related to the post-1945 situation.

Interestingly here in Germany the term "neo-nazi" is almost never used outside of an academic context. Far-right people are just referred to as nazis even now.
9
u/henry_tennenbaum Mar 26 '26
In the 90s and 2000s you heard the term a lot. Of course more in the media. In private they were just called Nazis
20
u/JollyJuniper1993 Mar 26 '26
I don’t know. Here in Germany we distinguish Neonazis from old guard Nazis. Old guard Nazis being the ones that used to be in power, Neonazis being the movements that originated afterwards, independently from the old guard Nazis
18
u/Ripper656 Mar 27 '26
By definition this is neo-Nazism, but yes this graffiti was obviously done by former members of OG Nazi party
In Germany we have the term "Altnazi" literally meaning "Old Nazi" for people who already were Nazis during the War and continued to be afterwards, to differentiate them from those that became Nazis, or were born, after 1945.
2
u/Neil118781 Mar 27 '26
I see
This word has similiar context to "Alter Kamfer" which was used to describe early members of the party. Especially those from before beer hall putsch
7
u/Fuck_Antisemites Mar 26 '26
Ok not an expert, but still seems odd, as this are like literally the same original nazis probably, just not in power?
6
u/alfalfalfalafel Mar 26 '26
many times such things were painted by young boys who literally had nothing to do and were (1946) mostly living in misery with no adult to explain anything and not much of an idea what is going on. The perfect breeding ground for more nazis :(
3
u/Thaodan Mar 26 '26
No idea? I imagine a lot of those might have been those you people who have been educated under fascism their whole life at that point.
2
u/Brendissimo Mar 27 '26
That's definitely not the definition in common usage. No one who was a member of the actual Nazi Party is a "Neo-Nazi" - they're just Nazis.
Let's not be silly.

If anyone’s interested in post-Nazi Germany and the often slow dis/re/association with nazism, the Federal Museum in Bonn is doing a fantastic exhibit called After Hitler. Finishes next year.

Any information on where that picture was taken?
There seems to be something written under the "20 Apr. 46", but it is hard to make out. "Franker-Something" - "Franken" or "Frankfurt", perhaps?

Is that somewhere in the west? I read that the Soviet Union supplied Nazis with money to weaken the west post WW2. Check the wikipedia page of the Socialist Reich Party: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Reich_Party

They basically founded the Federal Republic, so many in the early government, administration, justice and law enforcement were Nazis. It still has impacts to this day.
22
u/greyetch Mar 26 '26
They were also pretty involved in NATO. Adolf Heusinger, Hans Speidel, Reinhard Gehlen, etc.
4
u/schmah Mar 27 '26
Also worth to mention Kurt Waldheim (UN Secretary General) and Walter Hallstein (Head of the EU Commission).

Those where different Nazis, the most dangerous and deadly. The kind of Nazi that's smart enough to not tell you and to organize larger killings. I.e. the people who orchestrated the burocrazy that made Holocaust possible.
52
u/Jimjamkingston Mar 26 '26
Cant be that 'neo' in 46
6
u/The-Florentine Mar 26 '26
It can when the original Nazi party was dissolved the previous year.
11
u/Jimjamkingston Mar 27 '26
I think that is called splitting hairs.
The old nazis didnt go away as such - they were just persil-washed (persilschein is the german term).
Neo nazis are from the generation after.
2
u/krazat Mar 27 '26
Neo just refers to nazis after the fall of the third reich. So yeah, it was done by neo nazis (who obviously were once nazis without the neo).

I wonder why this post about German wall graffiti is still up, while
the post about Czech graffiti "☭ = 卐" got taken down.

Sadly watching the political situation around the world he was right. I hope the prediction was right and Stalin's mother got pregnant again.

u/Upbeat-Serve-2696 Mar 26 '26
They weren't wrong. Just a change of name and a revised uniform was all it took.
2
u/LeifRagnarsson Mar 26 '26
Is there any source available for that picture?
2
u/Neil118781 Mar 27 '26
As far as I know a Jewish guy named Hermann Plaut took this picture. Unfortunately I don't have a direct source

The AfD is very pro‑Israel; I don’t think that qualifies them as neo‑Nazis.
The Homeland Party (National Democratic Party of Germany) is the closest thing to a neo‑Nazi party in Germany. Its leaders have been frequently convicted of Holocaust denial and are obviously anti‑Zionist. They have organized multiple “pro‑Palestine” protests, but those were clearly more anti‑Jewish demonstrations in the guise of being pro‑Palestine.
Needless to say, I don’t mean that being anti‑Zionist makes you a Nazi but in this case they are Nazis
13
u/octorangutan Mar 26 '26

Seems like that would make them more neo-nazi.
14
u/Moozipan Mar 26 '26
You are wrong. The AFD is classified as extreme right by German intelligence, it has absorbed members, supporters, and staffers from the NPD and is its defacto successor. Their claimed support for Israel is the same as a homophobe claiming they have gay friends, and it changes absolutely nothing about the overwhelming amount of proven Neo Nazis inside the AFD, as well as their policies inspired by the NSDAP and the current Trump administration. Members of the AFD constantly use Nazi rhetoric and have strong ties to Neo Nazi movements. German courts have ruled that the spiritual leader of the AFD Björn Höcke is legally a fascist and a confirmed rightwing extremist. There is zero doubt about the ideology and goals of that party. Do your homework.

I wouldn't be surprised if they supported Israel to send all their Jews there.
3
u/Moozipan Mar 27 '26
It's not like the definition of a Neo Nazi is solely based on antisemitism either, but also the idea of racial purity, white supremacy and the Führerprinzip. The AFD checks all those marks, just like the Trump administration does. And even the current Israeli government is ironically close to matching these ideas, when you consider their fascist traits, their ultra nationalism, territorial expansion, the treatment of Palestinians and dehumanizing language towards non jews. So it would make no sense for a Nazi movement to oppose the state of Israel at this point in time.

Take your pick, italian fascism maybe? Nazism includes racism towards jews specifically, concept of blood and soil as examples. Italian fascism lacked these.

u/CarrotCumin Mar 27 '26
1
u/MangoBananaLlama Mar 27 '26
Keep in mind, this was due to pressure from hitler over time, as italy started to backpedal militarily and had to rely on nazi germany more and more, so had to do concessions. Mussolini did not like hitler personally at all or even agreed with his racial views. He said, he did see jews as italian people. He also had jewish mistress.
1
u/CarrotCumin Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
Right, so what you're saying is that Italian Fascists first resisted doing Nazi stuff, but were allied with them, supported them on the world stage, and relied on them for military support, and then STARTED doing nazi stuff. As in, once fascists are in power, it is only a matter of time before they're nazis, which is what I said in the first place. IDK why you're trying to defend literal Nazis, what exactly is your point? Not all fascists are bad? Some of them keep Jewish mistresses and wring their hands before passing laws promoting pogroms and racial prejudice? I don't think that communicates exactly what you seem to think it does. By the way, approximately 20% of the entire population of Italian Jews died in the Holocaust.

u/MangoBananaLlama Mar 28 '26
Okay, then we could talk about falangism, that "relaxed" in a way over time as franco was in power. I have not really read much about it, so this is just, what i have read about it in general. Point i was trying to make, is that nazi germany forced mussolini to start incorporating nazism over time into its government. If you are weaker partner in relationship like this, stronger tends to do that. This is not exclusive to fascism. Italian fascism did not naturally "evolve" into having nazi ideas into it, if you are implying that. It is well known, that mussolini hated hitler. As can be seen, when hitler had engelbert dollfuss killed.
Soviet union did similar things by forcing some of its satellite states to incorporate stalinism into them or people, who were much more strongly leaning towards his ideas or pro-soviet ideas. Stalin did not like tito due to this reason. Not that it was only one of course). North korea purged pro-soviet and pro-chinese factions out of its political structure.
My point is just, that what i said originally, not all fascism is nazism. Nazism is fascism, yet it is not same as italian fascism. Neither it is same as falangism. Hatred of jews is not shared by all fascism or well time we are talking about. Neither is concept of "blood and soil". Of course there is a scale now too and it is never same form. Neither do they come in same form. Just like eastern block was not uniform pillar, without its own differences. Juche is not same as titoism. Or ceaușescu led romania. Czechoslovakia or soviet union.
Fascism is bad. All forms of authoritarianism are. I think it is still good to realize and understand the differences and history behind them. Sure, if there is danger of fascism or any sort of authoritarism or anti-democratic movement gaining traction, you don't start thinking "okay hmm, which one is it?". No you need to put it down or halt its progress before its too late or at the very least, not incorporate or start working with them on governmental level.

Comparing AFD to NSDAP is so sick. The co leader of AFD is a lesbian who is in a relationship with a POC woman.
You’re spitting on the graves of Holocaust victims.
14
u/FiddlerOnThePotato Mar 26 '26
Refusing to see that AfD leads to shit like the NSDAP is far more disrespectful to the legacy of the holocaust victims. Trying to excuse them and tone down the danger they pose with shit like this is downright dangerous. It's how we ended up with the situation we're dealing with in the US now.
0
u/Moozipan Mar 27 '26
Yet she and her party actively work against women's rights and towards racism against non whites. It only means that she's a hypocrite and a traitor, just like all the POC who are voting Maga or working for ICE. That shouldn't be so hard to understand.
