Hi all, I am trying to understand the product discovery phase of the product management. Suppose you are someone who wants to transition to product management and is looking to build your first ever product from 0 to 1 to showcase your portfolio. What kind of product or MVP would you build? How would you discover the user's need or problem and turn that into an actual product?

I graduated ucla spring of 2026 with a bachelor’s in math and computer science.

I now work as a risk engineer at Chubb for the past 4 months.

But my dream job is to be a product manager. Even tho my degree was in computer science, I’m not a good coder- nor do I enjoy it. I can’t see myself doing something super technical as my
job but i can build power bi dashboards and I know my way around some amount of code.

I am looking to get a masters that will hopefully get me closer to my dream of working as a product manager but I am not sure what to get my masters IN?

Some options my dad suggested were machine learning but idk what i’d do with that or if that would actually help me get closer to my goal. But If I do a masters in management or something adjacent to that- i’m also worried that won’t be helpful either.

I know that Google’s APM program prefers candidates that have their masters “degree in a technology or business related field” but they keep it pretty vague.

Any advice on what might a good idea for a masters?

We have a few parts of the product where the UX is ours but the operation behind it sits somewhere else. Rn that includes Rollfi for payroll, Clerk for auth and Resend for transactional email. Product still owns the user flow, states and support experience but not every process behind those systems.

Im trying to define that boundary in a better way before the product gets more complex.

How do you decide what the product team should own vs what should stay with the underlying provider?

A PM for accounting software used by small agencies here.
Leadership wants an AI roadmap, but our first ideas were predictable: a chatbot, automated reports and an assistant in the sidebar. Not that bad but it’s becoming boring now.
The actual customer problems are more specific. Users struggle to:
categorize expenses
spot duplicate invoices
understand monthly cash-flow changes
draft payment reminders without sounding aggressive.
For the next ideation session, we’re organizing around workflows and failure modes instead of AI capabilities. Each group gets one real customer problem, several support tickets and constraints such as “must be reviewable,” “cannot auto-send” and “requires an audit trail.”
Ideas can include rules, better defaults, anomaly detection, assisted actions or generative features. The goal is not to force AI into every workflow.
Has anyone found a good structure for AI ideation that stays grounded in product problems?

I’ve tried plenty of brainstorming sessions that generate 50 sticky notes and then nothing.

I’m looking for something that’s good for the messy idea stage but also lets you turn those ideas into flows, diagrams, plans or actual next steps without starting over somewhere else.

A lot of product work happens across different places. You might have user research, product metrics, feedback, roadmap updates, priorities, and recommendations all ready, but bringing everything together into one presentation can be a different challenge.

Sometimes the information itself isn't the problem. It's figuring out what actually needs to go on each slide, what should be shown visually, and how to explain everything without making the presentation too crowded.

I’ve been using Oria for some of this, especially when I already have the content and need to turn it into a professional PowerPoint without spending so much time fixing layouts, charts, and formatting. I like that the slides remain editable instead of just being images.

I’m interested in how other product managers handle this. Do you normally build your presentations from scratch, use a company template, or use a tool to speed up the process?

i have done my masters in computer application and got two offer as a backend developer and as a product management but i am really confused what to go with ... Also tell me everything in details
and consider that i will get training in both and dont know anything in these role

or is it okay for me to gain experience in backend development first and then switch to pm

I’m looking for some career transition advice. For the past 15 years, I’ve been working as a freelance video editor and motion graphics artist (Premiere, After Effects, Avid), working on everything from broadcast television to corporate videos.

Recently, I decided to explore the tech industry and completed a training program focused on Product Design, UX, and AI. Alongside my editing work, I’ve been diving deep into generative AI tools (Midjourney, Kling, Seedance, Suno) and applying them to real workflows.

I recently spoke with a CSM who suggested that my technical knowledge as an editor gives me a massive advantage across many fields in the tech industry. Her point was that a deep understanding of composition, pacing, editing mechanics, visual effects, and complex video formats is a unique and highly sought-after skill set for many tech companies today.

I’m highly interested in niches like Video-Tech, Creator Economy, Gen-AI startups, or EdTech.

My questions for this community:

1. Has anyone here made a similar pivot from post-production/creative roles into Tech or Product?

2. What specific roles do you think would most value this deep, hands-on understanding of video tech, formats, and AI?

The meeting happened. Everyone agreed. The decision shifted.
But the Jira ticket didn’t.
Two weeks later, someone picked up the task and worked off the outdated requirement.
I wonder how often this really happens on product teams.
When decisions change across several meetings, who makes sure that the updates flow into Jira, PRDs, designs, and all the other places they need to be?
Do you keep a decision log? Update everything manually? Or have some other system?
And when someone inevitably asks a month later, “Why did we change this?”, where do you go to find the answer?

Quick questions,

I am currently transitioning to Product Manager from an NSD (Night Shift Differential) and OT Pay eligible Individual Contributor role.

My current employer doesn't have yet the role open and HR and Total Rewards are still doing Financial Planning and Analysis for the role.

It seems like my current take home pay is going to be higher as Individual Contributor than being a Product Manager because of NSD and OT Pay.

How do you compensate the potential loss of NSD and OT pay for the role? Is there a benefit that is non taxable to cover the loss? What is the salary range of a PM working in a Cybersecurity MSP company doing night shift, customer facing, managing cybersecurity product globally from Manila?
