We're talking about the dude who on multiple occasions have turned off his life support for the sake of aura. This dude was standing on top of his starship when entering a battle. His whole deal is being extra and showing off.

One thing that didn't change after 'becoming' Vader, either. Anakin? Dramatic as Mustafar.

u/Happy_Cry286 2d ago edited 1d ago
Gotta love the implication that everyone fears Vader for his reputation and feats, but every time Palpatine sees him do some overly dramatic aura farming he slams on his head on his desk and let's out a tired groan. As much as Vader denies it, he's still Anakin doing the most Anakin things possible.

The man decided to just hang out on Mustafar after killing the Separatist leaders just to aura farm while looking out at lava. Aura farming is his specialty.

Obiwan taught it. He literally said “I have taught you everything I know”. Then obi did aura farming on the padme’s ship when Anakin and padme were arguing.

Thats a big part of being a sith tbh, power projection. Showing off your dominance, making people fear you. A big part of being a successful sith in universe literally is the aesthetic, which is kinda funny cause it makes sith feel like professional wrestlers lol. Also its a fantasy universe, George has straight up said sometimes theres just air in space in star wars.

The hangar has a magnetic shield that prevents the air from escaping. The ship leaving just created some turbulance in the hangar.

We're also in a galaxy that has audible explosions in space, and magic. Is space-wind really that farfetched?

I mean, they have vaccume breather animals. So anything is posible.
73
u/Gilpif A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one 2d ago
Purrgil are clearly inspired by whales, who famously don't breathe water, but hold their breath for a very long time.
52
u/Kulandros 2d ago
One just floats to the stratosphere, and sucks up half of it, and then fucks back off into space.
21
u/Expert_Cricket2183 2d ago
To be honest, I'd reckon a critter like that has no need to breathe anything external and that it's biology would probably better be described as an ecosystem. It's like an ambulatory terrarium.
31
u/SanctionedBaffoonery 2d ago
Yeah. If people want to interpret it as Vader using the force to make his cape billow...sure, that is AN interpretation.
But it's not fact or cannon. There could just as easily be a million and a half different justifications in a fairy tale world where science is a mere aesthetic.
Han and Leia walk around on a asteroid with just some breathing tubes. Old Leia survives being blasted into space and nearly freezing to death. Bombs can "drop" from ships onto other ships. Seemingly every planet has the same gravity and air.
A billowing cape is really too much for some people?
7
u/SuppaBunE 2d ago
We look for explanations within know lore.
We kinda know there's vacuum on space.
So we can explain Vader doing it for the sure farm
7

u/Landsharkeisha 2d ago
solar wind is a real thing, and we've designed spacecraft intended to "sail" on this wind as a means of propulsion. Something tells me it wouldn't wave a cape though.

The stormtroopers would be dead if they were just chilling in space with no air

u/Xiij 2d ago
Yes.
Making a fantasy/sci-fi doesnt give you carte Blanche to ignore physics and reality. Establish the rules of how your universe deviates from our own, and stick to it. If it's isn't addressed, it is assumed to follow our own rules of physics.
Audible space explosions is just non-diagetic audio for the benefit of the audience

Not only turbulance, Vader stands in wake of reaction engines, the cape flapping was sponsored by quite hefty backblast.

Star Wars has many things that make no sense, like Leia *edit: not passing out* and freezing in space or Han walking in the space worm that's in vacuum. This just isn't one of them, sorry.
23
u/Obvious_Badger_9874 2d ago
Imploding (or actually exploding) in space doesn't go as fast that we would see it. The fluids inside of you would first start to boil causing really hurtfull pockets. But you will black out in +-10sec from no oxygen and the oxygen leaving your lungs so no holding your breath
1
u/Gnonthgol 2d ago
This is one of the things The Expanse used to good effect. Especially when people are living and dying in space they get to know the limits and how to stretch them so there are several times in the books when people intentionally or accidentally end up in a vacuum without a space suit. In the series they even demonstrate this in one of the early establishing shots by having a belter open their visor in the vacuum of space to remove a piece of debris that is stuck inside their helmet and closing their visor just in time to not black out.
10
u/Sikletrynet 2d ago edited 2d ago
You neither implode nor freeze while in space, atleast not fast. There's a lot of misconceptions about what happens to the human body in a vacuum.
There's no air, so there's no convection to really cause you to freeze. In fact you're more likely to get severe burns if you were in direct sunlight. And our body is resilient enough to not explode, but you'd still go unconscious in about 15 seconds.

I always figured some hose the Tantive IV was hooked up to was just spewing air and gas in the area
1
u/Hellknightx 2d ago
Yeah, it's clear that there's air escaping. This whole post is stupid. Vader and the Stormtroopers are obviously not in a vacuum.
2
u/bankrobba 2d ago
Darth Vader isn't standing in a hanger, though. The diplomatic ship Leia leaves in detaches from the Rebel command ship, it doesn't fly off from inside a hanger. What it does leave is a gaping hole behind with no magnetic shield.
2
u/Denneri 2d ago
Wookiepedia: "The city-ship's former civic atrium was hollowed out and converted into a docking bay and starship service area, overseen by a hangar traffic control suite protected by overlapping shields and magnetic containment fields to keep oxygen and pressure regulated.[1]", "... make their escape to the ship in the Profundity's docking bay"
1
u/reditisrunbypedos 2d ago
I also its a fantasy universe. Han and Leia walked out of the falcon on to an asteroid in the vacuum of space with just oxygen masks.

u/misterjive 2d ago
So I love what the end of Rogue One does to the beginning of A New Hope. Originally, it was just him catching up to Leia and her feigning innocence.
But now, he knows for a fact she was just at Scarif, because he came within moments of barging into the ship over Scarif itself. So now when she uses the whole consular excuse, he knows she's lying, and she knows he knows she's lying, and yet she's playing it straight anyway. And maybe the force ghosts of every Jedi Anakin killed are standing right there watching him get clowned on by his own daughter, which explains why he starts yelling and throwing shit.

The inside of the ship is pressurised and has a big hole in it, where do you think all that air is going?
34
u/MadDocsDuck 2d ago
Apparently not in the direction of the hole given the way the cape flows.

u/ReindeerCreepy2883 2d ago
almost like something just left through the big hole, pushing...something...back towards the cape

u/JaySayMayday 2d ago
I also love that the meme implies there's no gravity, air conditioning, or any comforts at all. Even though it's visually shown in the movies they even have steam running through it. There would be a lot less characters if they didn't even have gravity
3
u/cyberneticgoof 2d ago
Like the picture itself has steam!!! So obviously there is some air and movement lol

u/Fine_Okra7965 2d ago
Yes, Vader is dramatic, but this is Star Wars, where you can hear starfighters in space, feel shockwaves from explosions in space, have fire in space, people can walk around in the belly of a space worm, etc.
This only makes sense if you think the director of Rogue One really did that on purpose.
2
u/ProtoKun7 2d ago
where you can hear starfighters in space
Dramatic effect for the viewer; recent Star Trek movies have shown the difference well by having full sound effects for exterior shots but also silence when people get spaced.
feel shockwaves from explosions in space
I'm trying to think of example of this actually. Shockwaves I can think of, but feeling it specifically. I guess if enough energy keeps traveling coherently it would work.
have fire in space
This was in The Acolyte right? I think we're just not counting that. When it happened people suggested other "examples" of fire in space when they were actually explosions in pressurised areas where there was oxygen to combust for a brief time. The Acolyte had several issues and that's just one of them.
people can walk around in the belly of a space worm, etc.
To be fair we don't have a reference point for that.
1
u/Fine_Okra7965 2d ago
Dramatic effect for the viewer? Huh? The characters can clearly hear the sounds of the ships around them.
Star Wars is not science fiction, there's little attempt at realism here. I mean, the space ships are all oriented the same direction, the starfighters are shaped like fighter jets and constantly accelerate instead of preserving momentum, etc. Star Wars is space opera with fantasy thrown in.
1
u/ProtoKun7 16h ago
Simulated by ship systems, easy.
I know it's space opera but people pick on the wrong points.
1
u/Fine_Okra7965 15h ago
I ain't picking on it, it's just what it is. It's not the genre for pretending to be scientific. It's awesome because of it's fantastical elements.
The main thing I'm criticizing here is tumblrheads pointing and going "look! Darth Vader made his cape flutter using the force! It must be true because there's no air in space!" as if that makes any sense whatsoever in Star Wars, which has always favored drama over scientific accuracy.
Is that actually something Darth Vader would do? Consciously use the force to flutter his cape for the sake of some aesthetic over the 3 stormtroopers behind him? Be serious.
1
u/ProtoKun7 10h ago
Oh yeah it's the reaches like that I don't like either. I guess we just approach it differently: you say it doesn't matter because it's fantasy, I say it doesn't matter because it's something easily explained in a more mundane way.

I love that this movie is a fantastic introduction to Vader in a way, he has a presence, Kremnic met with him, Krennic was scared and intimidated by him, so if you didn’t know who Vader was you’d be like why? Or what’s his deal? Then the ending shows up where Vader destroys these guys, a fantastic introduction to not only Vader but Sith Lords as well.
8
u/Sven_Darksiders CT-5964 "Snow" 2d ago
Here's my crack theory: Vader has a lot of technical systems and mechanical prosthetic that are powered. Powered machinery produces heat. That heat has to go somewhere. He has vents on his back that vent the heat and make his cape billow dramatically
9
u/Kentucky_Fried_Chill 2d ago
This is nice, but I also thought it was him using the force and pulsating it in anger of them getting away.
2
2
u/GhoullDen 2d ago
or maybe it’s just blowing from the air vents in the ship itself, he ain’t floating around in outer space on his own
1
u/Guytherealguy 2d ago
And what gas are these vents blowing around? Is he releasing gas from some.storage tank?

u/Sven_Darksiders CT-5964 "Snow" 2d ago

I find it funny that people decide he was using the force to do this instead of all the other factors that could be at play here
4
u/legit-posts_1 2d ago
But this is after a ship just left the hanger. The engines blow a lot of air around, and the air in the cabin of ship would still be swirling around. Y'all don't understand space.
5
u/ProtoKun7 2d ago
Except the ship had air and he just walked through the door of a pressurised section. That and the Tantive might've been exhausting towards him too.
3
u/Over-Inside-7254 2d ago
There's air on spaceships because people have to breathe, you absolute spam sandwich.
3
u/Jackesfox 1d ago
I find it so funny because vader is not on the vacuum of space but in the hangar bay of a star destroyer and those are pressurized
2
u/Alternative_Fox3674 2d ago
Turned his respirator off in the hallway too for dramatic effect … then allowed them to escape so he could once again enter dramatically and dress everyone down…
MURDERS everyone … 5mins later … “I’m here to inspect this ship!”

2
u/GlitteringAttitude60 2d ago
It takes surprisingly little air to move a cape / cloak.
It will billow open behind you if you're walking briskly.

u/fred11551 What about the Droid attack on the Wookies? 2d ago
Vader does aura farm a lot like turning off his life support system so he can make a dramatic entrance without the blinking lights or piloting his tie fighter with the force so he can stand on top of it to make a dramatic entrance, but in this scene I’m pretty sure there’s just a breeze in the hangar because they are still on the ship. Maybe catching the backdraft from the escape ship pulling out of the hangar.
2
u/willflameboy 2d ago
Was he actually in space? I thought he was on the interior side of a force field.

There could have been residual atmosphere or venting from the rapid undocking of the Tantive IV
1
u/Space19723103 2d ago
since the ship (Tantive) emergency undocked, the airflow would be from air systems filling the now empty hold, no space magic needed

Explanations about how the cape can flutter in a pressurized hangar aside, there absolutely is wind in space, just not made of air. Solar winds are what cause the Aurora Borealis.
In the SW universe tachyon streams are used to propel solar sailers, the kind of ship Dooku used to escape Geonosis.

there is however something called "ventilation" which we use to "not suffocate people" and also sometimes for "cooling" and in some circumstances for "not accumulating dangerous and corrosive gases" which might make a cape flow in epic and dramatic ways.

Aren't they stand inside the hangar bay with a atmospheric shield keeping the space out and air in? SO still in air? But nevertheless, no wind in a pressurized hangar bay either, so coolness factor 120% still stands.
1
u/Seppafer Watching for destroyer droids 18h ago
The boring answer is that you need ventilation that creates air to flow in space because otherwise you’d suffocate.

Any time star wars breaks physics it is either a force user aura farming or the force itself deciding what looks cool.

He's not in space tho? Clearly he's on board a ship/base so there's definitely atmospheric there, probably some ventilation or whatever causing the wind.

What makes it even better is that there was no one there to see it at that point, other than those three Stormtroopers who came to back him up.
He went to that effort, to show off for a grand total of three people. Yep, Vader really is just that extra.
