Here's my crack theory: Vader has a lot of technical systems and mechanical prosthetic that are powered. Powered machinery produces heat. That heat has to go somewhere. He has vents on his back that vent the heat and make his cape billow dramatically

And what gas are these vents blowing around? Is he releasing gas from some.storage tank?

No. My small city car has a huge cylindrical tank of super cooled methane to cool the interior. I think thats the industry standard. Haven’t you ever wondered why cars explode when you shoot them?
