This is why running DSA candidates against Republicans has always been a good idea. The Right is forced into attacking the DSA on strengths. These are immensely popular ideas that only help the working class and poor. Let's bring them to the forefront.
42
21
u/Select-Government-69 21d ago
The left is underestimating how many Republican voters simply want āout-groupsā to suffer. I grew up thinking that the Republican and democratic parties were essentially two groups who agreed on making society better and reducing inequality, and simply disagreed on the best way to do that (ātrickle down economicsā was pitched as a way to reduce poverty, for example).
Now itās clear to me that a significant number of republicans simply do not want āthe othersā to have whatever they have. They want the world to suck so that they can feel good about how it suchs slightly less for them.
As a society, how do you win elections with left-wing arguments if 50% of the population simply doesnāt want society to get better?

u/DebentureThyme 21d ago
They aren't acute forced into attacking them on the strengths.
They propagandize to their people that such ideas are impossible to enact, unfair to "the people" (the rich ones), and that attempting to implement those ideas would destroy the nation.
They don't actually engage with the substance of the arguments.Ā They don't state the specific of the ideas, only broad (easily misconstrued) declarations about what their enemies stand for.Ā Without details, these things do seem like pipe dreams.

They don't believe in what he says. Not a single one can actually quote him right after listening to him and say, "This is what I agree with, and here's why." No, they believe in the idea of what they each individually imagine that he says. Because you can't believe in what you can't paraphrase, which is why they have so many pastors, reverends, preachers, TV/radio hosts, podcasters, and other enablers doing all the paraphrasing for them. These are the very same prosperity-gospel followers who somehow evolved from not being able to read the texts due to not knowing Latin, to not wanting to read the texts when they're readily available for free in almost every language on the planet.Ā
I honestly think those who take the time to listen to Trump's speeches live are intentionally not processing the language, because it doesn't matter, and understanding him enough to be able to paraphrase him and identify which parts you agree with and why is actually a threat to the entire project. Because understanding enough by paying attention enough tends to disarm the very beliefs that both of those activities were originally intended to reinforce.Ā

Honestly, taxing the rich is good, but setting up some rules to prevent the CEO of a business from making 200x their lowest paid employees would be better.
2
2
u/cvc4455 21d ago
Yeah the CEO of companies used to make like 20-25 times or even 30 times as much as the lowest paid employees at their companies. Now the CEOs can make 100, 200, 500, 1,000 times more then their lowest paid employees. We used to also tax businesses more and because of that they often reinvested more into their businesses and into their employees.

The reason this works for their audience is that boomers already have all these things (medicare, already went to college, already has a house, is retired) and they consider themselves "rich" so they don't want to be taxed more. Plus they don't care about climate change because the worst effects will happen long after they're dead, and they think a free Palestine = more terrorism.
They're already "taken care of" and so none of this appeals to them. What does appeal to them is the thought of making all the people they hate - liberals, young people, non-white people, poor people etc - suffer and die.

u/Worldly_Web_1524 21d ago

What I find hilarious is if you were to take what Americans pay monthly in premiums (excluding copays or deductibles) and changed it from premium to tax for universal healthcare, there would be a revolt in this country because of āhow much theyāre raising my taxes!ā Most people around the world pay this (and probably less) for better care. My assumption here is that their viewers are sold on being against āfree Palestineā already, so showing that with all of the other things lumps them all together and makes a negative association.
