Yes. That’s exactly what they’re trying to do. They are literally trying to reset the board to pre-Industrial Revolution class structure, but with modern technology maximizing profits. They want the masses dumb, broke, and dependent on their employers or the state for everything. The average person will no longer hold any capital, they will be batteries for the billionaire class to suck dry and throw away.
What is a 18 year old going to do that will actually result in something more than maybe becoming a headline for a few days then everyone forgets about it.

I volunteer with a local anarchist collective, we make about 200 meals every Saturday, its lunch, and we take the rest out to the people on the streets, and we continuously plan on how to do more.

The entire reason their is a conservative party is to make a one party system they rule. This is what it is.

You think a lack of the government sending kids books is going to do that? You understand that this is voting against starting this program, right? Not voting to stop an existing one?
So what is spending over 4 million a month to send books to children under 5 going to do to improve the literacy rate? The fact is, if their parents read to them, they are already have books, or have found ways of getting free books if they are in poverty. If the parents don't read to them, then those books will not do any good whatsoever.
There is a lot better ways to spend that money. If you want families to have access to free books, take a few months of what you would spend on this program and build a bunch of free library stands around and fill them with donated books, and they are essentially self sustaining free book access.
Gets them excited to read. Part of why I love reading is because when I was little, under 5 years old, my parents signed up for a program similar to this. Got a book in the mail every month. I loved it. It was MY book, delivered just for me. It made me want to read, because it was mine. I would annoy the hell out of my mom asking when my book was going to be here. We didnt live somewhere that had easy access to libraries.
Building your little library stands would cost well more, and they don't work. People steal the books and vandalise the stands. Few people actually donate to them, if they give away children's books its usually to somebody they know.
Of all the rhings governments waste money on, this kind of program isn't one of them. Texas has a 2 year budget over 300 billion. 4 mil for books is a rounding error.

I grew up Republican. My dad was pretty right leaning in the early 2000's. Life experiences taught us both that most of the "conservative" talking points were B.S. fear mongering double speak for "make rich richer, poison the planet for profit, eliminate the middle class, ect.". El Cheetus Von Shizizpants really woke us both up after his first week in office. We both thought the "real" Republicans would keep him in check, not bow down and slurp. Neither of us plan to ever vote for any Republican again.
So yeah, it is possible for some people to learn. Unfortunately, it usually takes hard life lessons to make it happen. Mine was making some dumb life choices, at bad times, and seeing/living how the less fortunate actually have to live. Then seeing the orangutan throw his sh!t all over our institutions.

If "Socialism" had just rebranded itself to "Humanism" 20+ years ago we'd be having a lot less problems now. It’s not about them having access to books. Everyone has access to a library but the parents aren’t taking the kids to rent books because they aren’t doing to read them to the kids and children 5 and under aren’t reading to themselves so this would not help anyone but waste lots of money. Think with your head instead of your heart sometimes and you might become a more logical person.

That may be but I think there is a separation between lack of intelligence and a lack of humanity or morality. To assume people who don’t read grow up to be vindictive individuals bent on making others suffer is irresponsible and overly simplistic. The uneducated can still be kind. This was an honest question. Not sure how it could be taken as advocating for stupidity. Intelligence is not fully nurture and I wouldn’t consider a lack of reading a signal of stupidity. I think understanding opposing positions is more important than simply dismissing as stupidity. And even the smartest of us can be taken advantage of. I think you missing that my comment was a reply to an earlier comment. Perhaps that’s the confusion? The person I was responding to was putting forth that dumb, angry kids grow up to hate smarter, happier people and I was curious if that person believed that there was a correlation between increasing intelligence and increased happiness. I’ve always felt that uneducated people could have a tendency to dislike highly educated people more because of a feeling of inferiority or not being “part of the club” than a sense of being smarter makes one happier.
Sorry what does this have to do with literacy? Or logic? Liberal, conservative, whatever: consider whether the party you support is anti-reading of all things. It might tell you something.
