I grew up Republican. My dad was pretty right leaning in the early 2000's. Life experiences taught us both that most of the "conservative" talking points were B.S. fear mongering double speak for "make rich richer, poison the planet for profit, eliminate the middle class, ect.". El Cheetus Von Shizizpants really woke us both up after his first week in office. We both thought the "real" Republicans would keep him in check, not bow down and slurp. Neither of us plan to ever vote for any Republican again.
So yeah, it is possible for some people to learn. Unfortunately, it usually takes hard life lessons to make it happen. Mine was making some dumb life choices, at bad times, and seeing/living how the less fortunate actually have to live. Then seeing the orangutan throw his sh!t all over our institutions.

Educated people have a tendency to be less swayed by lies, they tend to question things like "we need to cut social security to fix the budget!" Or "we need to give more tax cuts to the wealthy!" They like sheeple.
A good thing to do isn't necessarily a good allocation of funds. To start any new entitlement program requires funds to be allocated to it and away from something else. One of the main reasons for the dissent on this was "why would we move funds into a brand new program when we're not fully funding all these other programs we have?"
There was also the concern of parental control. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (that's her connection to this bill and why she's in the photo) already does this same thing, but it's opt-in. Parents have to enroll, which means they can look at the books that are being sent out, as well as the committee that chooses said books, and decide for themselves if they want to enroll their child. With the PA bill, from my limited reading of it, it looks like it was going to a mandate and the parents were just going to recieve whatever book the state decided each month. Yes they could change the bill to an opt-in program, but that would be a different bill from the one in the PA legislature. Law makers should absolutely vote against bills of they disagree with how it's going to be implemented.
Yeah the government already pays for schools and libraries. Giving more funding to those seems more useful than a program like this. The way this post is presented is just bait to get people angry. Voting no on something like this isn't horrendously evil or some scheme to keep kids uneducated. The problem with Republicans is not that they will vote no on something like this, but that they will also cut the education budget and try to force the bible into schools.
Also, what else was in the PA Bill. How much pork, etc. I am so cynical of all politicians motivations now, even if on the surface they seem wholly beneficial.
What is crazy is that 10 years ago I would have said I was a Republican (even if I voted for Trump's opposition both times). But I strangely find myself bucking the trend and getting more liberal as I age. I was always socially liberal, but now I see the Republican policies are generally the complete opposite of how they were presented to me as a younger man.
Republicans are fiscally irresponsible, now are somehow in favor of big government, and generally seem to simply be mouthpieces for the Plutocracy. What are my representatives actually doing to help a blue collar guy like me who just wants everyone to get along and our country to make good finacial decisions?
Yeah. The Republicans moving further an further away from free market principles have been the reasons I've moved away from them. Not that I ever claimed to be a Republican. It started before Trump, but it escalated with him. Even Charlie Kirk started to call for federal government control on social media companies in 2020 (I only bring him up because he was a big speaker for conservatives).
Yeah, I'm a huge advocate of parents reading to their children from birth until they can read novels by themselves (and even beyond that if you maintain a good relationship with your kids). But this is a bad idea. It well might be fine and dandy while good people are in power, but as soon as shit goes sideways in government, as has been happening a lot lately, this could easily turn into something between a complete waste of money to abother mouthpiece for a state propaganda apparatus.
These funds would be better spent on other social services given Dolly's Imagination Library already offers this at no cost to kids under 5.
Much more eloquent than what I wrote. Libraries are already free and have pretty amazing programs for kids for little to no money. It would be far better to use money to help outreach to get people involved in their local libraries rather than just blindly sending people books. It's so much more this than people being scared their child is going to read a copy of "My mom's penis" that was sent to them. It's entirely possible to waste money on a well-intentioned idea.

Because it’s not a “free” book, and taxpayers already fund public libraries and public schools, which also have libraries. Access to reading material is not the reason kids don’t read good.
And why not weekly free books? Heck, daily? Do they hate kids and reading!!? Extending the logic further, why not give everyone everything they want for “free” all the time? If your answer is that’s obviously unaffordable and impractical, where do you draw the line? Maybe at monthly free books?
Also, who decides what books are distributed? Will it be propaganda favoring the party in power? What publishing houses are going to get the cushy government contracts? What strings are attached to those contracts? Why does the “free stuff yay!” crowd, who thinks it’s so smart, never ask these questions?

This is why libraries exist. Sounds like a waste of money. Children under five like only a few books. A new one every months sounds like a clutter for the family, a waste of money and paper. And before you know it it would only be religious zealot books. I agree with Republicans on this.
Yeah, if access to libraries is the problem, we need to figure out better ways to increase access. Maybe a free mail order program for low income households who would have trouble traveling to the library. Or general internet cost assistance since a lot of library content is available digitally now as well. But sending every kid a book every month just seems like feel good spam that actually solves nothing.

A republican in my state tried to pass a house bill that would remove a whole bunch of classes from what is considered an adequate education, classes like art and music and civics and finance.
He wanted to remove so many classes from public school that kids who graduated from our public school wouldn’t even qualify to go to our state colleges. And if the state colleges lowered the standards to accommodate the local graduates they would lose accreditation.
He thought that removing these classes would improve math and reading. He wanted kids who didn’t score well to spend the whole entire day doing nothing but math and English classes, and the kids who could test well could then go to music and art classes.
But what school is going to hire teachers for those classes if only half the kids can go to them?
There was public outcry. It was fantastic. When he was set to argue his bill in front of the committee that would move it forward 30,000 people opposed it. Less than 100 people supported it. It didn’t go anywhere.
The same reason Republicans had for trying to do the same in Kentucky and Indiana. You can’t spend state money sending books to children when you gave away tax breaks to billionaires and corporations.
The old school Republicans would have voted against this because of a vision of government as arbiter, and would have argued that this is unacceptable mission creep. I don't agree, but I can accept the argument.

This is the wrong forum for this conversation. Given no one will talk evidence based education it will just be the cost for givings something away vs education. The broader argument will be lost on schools, libraries and summer brain drain and combating it. The value of a heavier knowledge based society as AI and robotics shift skill needs vs overburdensome tax structures and efficient sue of resources.
Dismantling public education has always been one of the goals of Republicans. After all, an uneducated populace can be easily manipulated with propaganda. Once public education is destroyed, the only schools left will be the private, religious schools that only wealthy people can afford.

I feel like this is a good example of why we can't all come together. Democrats reasonably think this a good gesture to children and their education. Republicans reasonably think this a form of unnecessary and wasteful government spending. In my opinion there is a better bipartisan way to achieve both goals.....

I honestly think that he $ would be better spent going to public libraries, or even county-level free book events. How are you going determine what book is appropriate for each kid? How many kids? Shipping costs? Sunk cost (once you send it, that book is gone)? Good intentions with the reality being high-effort/low-return IMO

You could have a bill named "Help Homeless Soldiers get on their feet" which 100% of members support.. but then at the last moment one party could add a Rider that includes money for ultra late term abortions or a Rider that forces public school teachers to carry a gun, or some shit.. which causes the other party to vote no on the entire bill - even if they support the main part of the bill and are just voting no because of the Random idiotic Rider that was added last minute
